    LESSON OVERYesterdays Lesson

Yesterday we continued topractice expanding expressionsand shortening expressions.

Example: The expression 7ABC canbe expanded and written as7ABC.

Example: The expression 5DEFcan written in fewer terms as: 5DEF.

We also learned about finding theproduct of two terms. For example, the product of 7A and 6B = 42AB.Multiply the coefficientsfirst, andthen multiply the variables.

We also learned about combininglike terms for the first time.

Todays Lesson Today we will practice combining

like terms, expanding expressions, and writing expressions in thefewest terms possible.

Work on the Do Now on the Nextpage. You have 8 minutes.

    COMBINING LIKE

Each part of an expression is calleda term. For example, lets take theexpression 6y + 3y. There are twocoefficients. What are they?

The two terms in this expressionareseparated by the addition sign.

Therefore two terms are 6yand 3y. Ican combine 6y and 3y becausethey are what we call like terms. They are terms that both containthe variable y. Therefore, I cancombine them. 6y + 3y = 9y.

    COMBINING LIKE TE

However, when combining liketerms, we can only combine theterms that are alike. For example, inthe expression 6y+ 3a no terms canbe combined because ys andas are not like terms. In other

words, you can only combine yswith ys and as with as.

Take the expression 3a + 3b + 5c.Are there any terms that can becombined? Why or why not?

    COMBINING LIKE TER

In an expression, numbers are terms aswell. For example, in the expression 6y + 3y+ 10 there are 3 terms. 6y, 3y, and 10.

    Can you combine like terms?

    How about the expression 7a + 3a + 76?

    COMBINING LIKE TER

Not all expressionsare going to be writtenin a convenient order. For example, lookat the following two expressions:

    Expression # 1: 3A + 4A + 5B +10

    Expression # 2 : 3A + 5B +4A + 10

If you notice, in both expressions, the terms

are the same, however the order isdifferent (in the second expression, 4A iswritten in a different part of theexpression).

We still need to combine 3A and 4A. Whatsign is in front of 4A? This is the sign we useto combinethe terms. Since there is an

addition sign in front of the 4A, well add3A + 4A.

    3y + 5y + 2a + a
