In most kids’ church activities, kids learn Bible verses, learn of the greatsaints of the Old Testament, read of those monumental stories of faith like Abraham’s readiness to sacrifice Isaac, Noah and the flood, and David andGoliath. These are noble efforts and of importance. But unfortunately, in many of our churches, what’s missing is the thorough clarification of the Gospel, understanding of our faith, and equipping in sharing.

Many good churches “serve” too many of the same servings. We call it a spiritual diet. Look at theplate and do you see multiple servings of vegetables? Vegetables (example: studying Old Testamentheroes of the faith) are nutritious, but too many servings take the place of an essential food group(example: teaching kids the Gospel so they personalize it, know it, AND can share it). Kids need aspiritually well-rounded diet.

What’s being taught is good, but what’s NOT being taught is the issue. The spiritual diet has good food, but it’s missing the main ingredient—the protein—the Gospel.

Kids and adults must know the foundation of their faith:• Jesus• Who He is• What separates us from Him• What He did• What He offers

That’s the Gospel. When we KNOW the foundation, then we can share; when we share, we growfirmer in trusting in our foundation.

In this issue of Multiply you’ll learn about a partnership between Kids’ EE and OneHope (formerlyBook of Hope) that broadens the foundation of our Gospel ministry. This association has the potentialto expand our Gospel outreach to kids in the States and around the world like never before in EE’s 47-year history. We are calling this unique partnership Hope for Kids . You can be a part of Hope for Kids at a time when our kids need the foundation of the Gospel more than ever.

God Bless,

We heard the warnings. Over the years, research from Barna hit us head-on,like an oncoming truck.

• 80 percent of kids abandon their faith whenthey get into college

• A biblical worldview is set by the age of 13• 70 percent of children are born into non-Christian homes

• 85 percent of Americans make professions of faith in Christ before age 13

These were just a few of the statistics thatstaggered us. We were full aware of theimportance of equipping kids with the Gospel;that the Great Commission is for kids too; thatkids need a foundation for spiritual growth to

respond positively to be Jesus’ witnesses; thatkids need a world-view that is framed by therecognition that without faith in Jesus we areall lost in our sins.

The challenge has been to communicatethese truths to the local church and help themunderstand that, through Kids’ EE, kids ages 9to 13 CAN understand the Gospel, can shareit, and can deepen and solidify their faith inChrist.

The result is that God has blessed Kids’EE and it has spread not only across North America but also around the world on everycontinent. Many churches are beginning tounderstand that it is the responsibility of parents and pastors of the church to equip kids

with the Gospel message.

Yet, we encountered two concerns that werehindering our progress—the lack of affordabletraining materials for Third World countries

and in urban areas across North America, andthe ability to get them to points of need.

With a unique partnership between EE andOneHope, we have overcome those twoconcerns, opening up Hope for Kids and broadpossibilities for Gospel advancement.

uring the 1960’s and 70’s,Reverend Bob Hoskins and his

wife, Hazel ministered in theMiddle East for 12 years. Besidesliving in Beirut, Lebanon, the

Hoskins also resided in Africa,South America, and France.

They returned to the States in 1980. In 1987,their ministry lives would take a dramatic

turn when the Minister of Education in El Salvadorasked Bob to provide Biblesto the country’s 986,000school children. Bob

relished the challenge, butinstead of delivering Bibles,he delivered a book with theGospel message that todayis called the Book of Hope.

The book was such a success that the country was caught in a wave of church revivals withstudents and their families making professions of faith in Christ.

After having such a dramatic impact, Bob startedBook of Hope, an international child evangelismministry that distributes the Book of Hope toyouth and children around the world. His son,Rob, is Executive Director of the organization.

To date, more than 550 million Books of Hopehave been distributed in more than 120 countries. It has been translated into more than 70 distinctlanguages. As Bob said early on, “By targetingschool children, we reach the most open,

tenderhearted segment of the population.”

“A match made in Heaven”

Those were the words of EE InternationalPresident, Rev. John Sorensen when Kids’ EEand OneHope formed a partnership to potentiallyreach 20 million kids over five years with theGospel through the Hope for Kids project. Itcombines two ministries with the desire to reachkids with the Gospel, train them to share theGospel, and reach even more kids.

We asked Duane Mellor, Ministry Coordinatorat OneHope, why OneHope is partnering with

8/14/2019 Multiply Winter 09

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/multiply-winter-09 8/20

Kids’ EE since OneHope was already reachingkids with the Gospel. “OneHope is not like Kids’EE,” Duane says. “I thought we needed to get theGospel out to a lot of people, and to do that weneed to be training people how to share their faith. That’s what EE is all about.”

Dr. D. James Kennedy, Founder of EE,always said thatmultiplication wasthe key to reachinga multiplyingpopulation, andthat would onlyhappen by trainingpeople how to sharetheir faith, not justby adding newChristians one-by-one. And thatapplied to kids also.

OneHope gets the trainingthat EE provides, andEE gets the distributionof materials that anorganization like OneHopecan supply. Elise Stimpson,Kids’ EE representative

who works in Africa, sawthe shortcoming firsthand.“The key element holding EE back from reachingits goals in Africa,” Elise says, “was the lack of affordable materials.” To add to that, there was alsothe inability to get them to those remote areas of the world.

With OneHope’s centralized models of distributionand experience, EE has a partner that not only

specializes in reaching the most remote areas of the world, but also can print evangelism booksthat cost pennies to produce. Considering EE’s

worldwide network, the costs are further reduced.“Collaboration allows both organizations to buildoff of their strengths,” says Duane. “In the past wehave not had the time to distribute and disciple.Because of this relationship, we know that two

million children willbe trained with thepotential of reaching 20million other kids forChrist over five years.”

Pastors in bush areashave very few teachingmaterials available. One pastor in Malawiemailed a request fora picture of Jesus toshare with 50 orphan

children. Imagine the facesof these children when theyare handed a top-qualityfull-color Gospel storybook.“Western kids may read itonce,” says Marcia Ardis,North America Director forKids’ EE, “but kids withoutprint resources will treasure itfor a lifetime—well, actually

for all of eternity!”

Duane called EE the best discipleship toolfor children. OneHope contributes its globalinfrastructure to print affordable books and shipthem around the world. EE then adds its worldwidetraining network, and the possibility for Kingdomcapacity is vastly expanded.

During the summer in Australia,21 EE representatives met withthree associates from OneHopeto brainstorm ideas to reachthe world’s children for Christ.

Represented were people from Finland, Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia, England, Mexico, Ukraine, andthe U.S. Both organizations brought their

visions that every child would hear theGospel and hear it soon.

The urgency is understandable becausekids grow up so fast. “If a child’s tenderheart is not filled with God, the world will

fill it with ‘untruths,’” says Marcia Ardis,North America Director for Kids’ EE.

The question was how best to fulfill thesevisions. The two-week meetings focusedon the current Kids’ EE North Americatraining materials and how to adapt themand make them more affordable to reachthe global community of children.

From this meeting, it was determinedthat three significant booklets be createdand, ultimately, be translated into severaldifferent languages.

What if you had the opportunity toshare the Gospel with 10 childrenright now? Ten precious children

who could have their lives changedforever because of you. How much

would that be worth to you?

Before you answer, think about what animpact 10 children who love Jesus couldmake as they grow up in a war-torn countryfilled with political unrest and religious

confusion; or even as they grow up in yourcommunity.

The exciting truth is you can share the Gospel with 10 children, and many more, for as littleas the cost of a cup of coffee, through our

Hope for Kids project.

Throughout this issue of Multiply, wehave been outlining the potential of ourpartnership with OneHope to reach 20 million

kids with the Gospel over five years. As apartnership between Evangelism Explosionand OneHope, Hope for Kids will train twomillion children around the world to sharetheir faith with their friends. Each child willbe trained using the colorful and kid-friendly

Hope for Kids Activity Book that costs $2each. Each trained child also receives 10Witnessing Tools to hand out to their peers. So a $2 gift impacts 11 kids for Christ!Considering our vision to equip 2 million kids

with the Gospel, that amounts to 20 millionchildren offered the chance to make JesusChrist their Lord and Savior.

You can view the colorful, interactive Hope for Kids materials on pages 9-11. Again, each

one of these Activity Books will cost $2 toprint, ship, and share.

Will you join us by providing the funds toprint and distribute 20, 50, 100, or even moreof these Activity Books? Your investment willimpact the Kingdom of God in a wonderful

way. Please pull out the wallet-flap envelopein the middle of this issue of Multiply formore information on how to give.

Please review the numbers on page 13 for thepossibilities that Hope for Kids will providekids around the world. Thank you in advancefor your generosity, and for lifting thisincredible project up to the Lord in prayer.

In conjunction with the Hope for Kids project, in April of 2009, EE launchedthe Global Development Project (GDP),

which will train and establish more than400 full-time EE implementation field

workers (IFWs) worldwide by the end of

2011.

In a world filled with economic uncertaintyand unrest, our ministry is on the rise, and as

we tag-team Hope for Kids and the GDP theEE ministry is moving forward in order toexpand the reach of the Gospel.

Already, we have conducted two intensivesix-week GDP training sessions and haveplaced more than 25 IFWs into countries in

Asia, Africa, Eurasia, and Oceania, wherethey are working with local churches toimplement EE training. With this training, the church leaders will be able to equip theircongregations to confidently and successfullyshare Christ within their communities.

Through Hope for Kids , 20 millionchildren can potentially hear the Gospelaround the globe. This will requiremore trained IFWs who will work onthe grassroots level, side-by-side withpastors of local churches. They will buildand sustain these important relationships

with pastors. They will also assist pastorsto train teachers who will then equipchildren to share the Gospel through the

Hope for Kids project. “This cycle willcontinue—multiplication at its finest— adults reaching children who reach more

children…who reach more…who reachmore,” says Marcia Ardis, North AmericaDirector for Kids’ EE.

Duane Mellor, who helped create the Hope forKids project says, “Our goal, beyond the five-year plan, is to distribute up to 140 million Hope

for Kids materials per year.”

Through the GDP, we build the infrastructureneeded through trained and supported IFWs who

will help pastors assist their congregations usingthe Hope for Kids materials in an interactiveand dynamic way so children have a fullunderstanding of the Gospel and how to share it.

EE Training Centers Yield Results as FieldWorkers are Trained

There are currently three D. James and AnneKennedy International Training Centersfor World Evangelism actively trainingimplementation field workers (IFWs). Thethree strategic sites are Indonesia, Fiji in thesouth pacific, and Ukraine with plans for moreincluding a Middle East site.

Through the GDP, each trained IFW will serve

a minimum of 15 churches every year for threeyears. At the end of the three-year period, theIFW will continue to assist the 45 churches incontinuing EE including Hope for Kids .

IFWs come from around the world with a deepcommitment to the Great Commission, fromplaces like Nepal, Jordan, India, Papua NewGuinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Malaysia,

Australia, United States, Pakistan, Singapore,China, and Vietnam.

“There is no more powerful multiplication effortthan training leaders of leaders,” says Rev. JohnSorensen, EE President. “And that’s the purposeof building the training centers.”

Do we have a tendency to view childrendifferently than adults? They can oftenget overlooked in ministry. Children’sSunday school and Wednesday nightyouth groups sometimes focus on

“occupying” children instead of training them.

At a time in the New Testament when the

disciples were jockeying for positions of priority with Jesus (Matthew 18:1), Jesussaid to them, “I tell you the truth, unless youchange and become like little children, you

will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”(Matthew 18:3-4)

Jesus went on to say, “And whoever welcomesa little child like this in my name welcomesme.” (Matthew 18:5)

Obviously, children were top priority withJesus and they should be top priority with us.We cannot think less of them because they arenot adults. When we invest in our children, weare investing in the Kingdom of God.

Research from Barna has awakened us to theimportance of reaching children for Christ:

• The probability of accepting Christ is highestamong kids under age 14.

• 32 percent accepted Christ betweenages 5 and 13.

• 4 percent accepted Christ between

ages 14 and 18.• 6 percent accepted Christ after age 19.

Now is the time to take children into our armsand our hearts and become involved with

Hope for Kids. Children are a vibrant part of the church today and in the future. They donot need to be entertained or “occupied.” Theyneed to know the Gospel well enough to haveit impact their personal lives and they need toknow how to share the Gospel with others.

Hope for Kids is an unprecedented opportunityfor you to take a child, lift them up, and placethem into the loving arms of Jesus. Please readpages 12-13 for information on how you canbecome involved.

The Hope for Kids materials will beused throughout the world. Already, adults are being trained who willthen equip kids to share the Gospel.Field-testing has taken place in south

Africa, Ukraine, and on the South Pacific

island of Fiji. People are respondingfavorably to the new booklets that providean affordable option for top-qualitytraining materials.

The five-year plan officially begins in2010. As a “starter” year, 250,000 kids

Activity Books will be printed during thefirst year. “As this train gets rolling, we’llprint more of these materials and year-by-year, Hope for Kids will pick up steam,”

says Duane Mellor, OneHope’s MinistryCoordinator.
