Description

1. Description

1.1 Requirements

Light-oil separators can only work properly when the retained light-oils are regularly removed and the coalescence insert is regularly cleaned. The safety system for the light-oil separators therefore automatically monitors the main operating conditions in petrol separators and coalescence separators as per EN 858 and in oil pans.

■ The safety device for light-oil separators provides early warning signals It automatically controls two states:

■ The max. light-oil layer thickness in petrol and coalescence separators corresponds to the point when the maximum oil storage volume is reached.

■ The max. over-fill in petrol/coalescence separators (corresponding to max. contami-nation of the coalescence material in the case of coalescence separators) or re-aching a predefined filling level in an oil pan signal the right time for maintenance to be carried out. This ensures optimum economical operation of the system.

1.2 Areas of application

The alarm device can be used in locations subject to explosion hazards such as:

■ Petrol separators EN 858 ■ Coalescence separators EN 858 ■ Oil pans ■ Oil collecting containers

The safety device for light-oil separators can also be retrofitted.

Description

6

1.3 Application limitations

■ The cables and the plastic components of the over-fill sensor and oil sensor are not resistant to aggressive wastewater.

■ The maximum permissible cable length between the monitoring device and the oil sensor is 500 m.

■ If liquids with conductivities < 10 µS flow into the separator, they can detri-mentally affect the proper functioning of the oil sensor (for help see „Mal- functions/Remedy“ chapter).

1.4 Design

The safety device for light-oil separators consists of the following components:

1.5 Monitoring device

The monitoring device is classified as an associated electrical device under DIN EN 60079-11 with one intrinsically safe control circuit. The electronic switching of the device is housed in a wall cabinet with a separate terminal connection box. The terminals for connecting the intrinsically safe circuit are blue and laid out separately from one another and the other terminals in accordance with DIN EN 60079-11 (see Electrical Connection chapter for details on terminal assignment).

1.6 Terminal connection box

The terminal connection box is made of metal. Connection of probes is carried out by means of single conductor connector.

Description

7

1.7 Connecting cables

Flexible control line LIYYÖ-OB 2X0.75 blue. Length as per requirement, maximal 500m. Differently coloured cables can also be used, for instance if labelling is identifying intrinsi-cally safe circuit. The cable should be laid in a protective pipe if buried in the ground.

1.8 Oil sensor

Conductivity sensor with two electrodes; connection cable 5m.

1.9 Over-fill sensor

Float switch made of stainless steel; connection cable 5m.

1.10 Sensor holder

Function

8

2. Function

2.1 Operation

Green LEDs display trouble-free operation.

2.2 Alarm

In connection with the monitoring device, oil sensor and over-fill sensor can trigger off an alarm independently from one another. The visual alarm signals on the monitoring device are carried out almost instantaneous-ly, separate for both control circuits, by means of LEDs (red flashing). They automatically stop after clearing the fault and resetting with „Off“ button. The audible alarm signals (buzzer) and the external alarm signals are separated alarm signals and are saved. They are triggered off only when the oil sensor or the over-fill sensor alarms continue for approx. 3 s. Pressing the „Off“ button turns off the audible alarm. The external alarm signals can only be reset to normal when there is neither an alarm state nor a mains failure. This is achieved by again pressing the „Off“ button. The relevant testing buttons „Test“ must be pressed to test the function of the alarm inputs.

2.3 Fault

In the case of mains failure or if the device is defective, a potential-free signal is available at the terminal strip (terminal 3-5).

6. Commissioning /Functional check

6.1 Check of function of monitoring device

Caution! When installation has been completed, it is essential that the proper functioning of the alarm is tested before use!Carrying out the test is easiest when the sensors are dismantled.

➜ Submerge the oil sensor in a bucket of water and allow the over-fill sensor to hang down freely.

■ Operating signal oil layer/accumulation (green) lights.

6.2 Check of oil sensor

➜ Take the oil sensor out of the water. ■ Alarm signal oil layer (red) flashes, operating signal oil layer goes out. ■ Audible alarm sounds (delayed 5 sec.). ➜ Switch off audible alarm by means of Audio Warning Off. ■ «Alarm» signal available as potential-free contact (terminal 9-11). ➜ Immerse oil sensor in water. ➜ Acknowledge alarm signal by means of Audio Warning Off.

6.3 Check of over-fill sensor

➜ Lift sensor. ■ Alarm signal over-fill (red) flashes, operating signal over-fill goes out. ■ Audible alarm sounds (delayed 5 sec.). ➜ Switch off audible alarm by means of Audio Warning Off. ■ Return float into its starting position. ■ «Alarm» signal available as potential-free contact (terminal 6-8) ➜ Acknowledge alarm signal by means of Audio Warning Off.

Functional check

19

6.4 Separator

➜ Fill separator with water (not applicable with pans). ➜ Set sensor/s in accordance with operating manual. ➜ Check sensor setting and readjust, if applicable.

6.5 Readiness for operation

The alarm device is ready for operation

6.6 Check of device

During operation, device can be checked by means of the relevant test buttons. The fault signals are switched off by means of the Audio Warning Off button.

Operation

20

7. OperationThis device should only be operated, serviced and maintained by staff who are familiar with: the operating instructions and the directions it contains, the valid regulations on health and safety at work, and accident prevention!!

7.1 Visual and function testWhen operating the alarm system, it is only necessary to carry out regular inspection (recommendation: every six months) and to occasionally conduct visual and function tests on the monitoring device. The monitoring device is checked by pressing the test buttons as described in the Function Test chapter.

7.2 Alarm signalsare given visually and audibly and are available at the terminal strip as potential-free signals when the max. permissible oil layer thickness is reached in the separator, or if an impermissi-ble amount of liquid has accumulated (over-fill).

7.3 Fault signal

is a potential-free signal for: ■ Mains failure ■ Defective monitoring device

Act immediately in the case of alarm or fault signal ➜ Inform control office ➜ Find cause and clear

NotesIf the separator is not emptied at the right time despite activation of an alarm sig-nal, more waste water and light-oil can flow into the system. In the case of separators with float switch, this can cause the float to close and the outflow to shut so that no wastewater flows out. This gives rise to over-fill which is signalled by the over-fill sensor. If wastewater continues to flow in, this can raise the layer of light-oil above the oil sensor. The electrodes are then covered by water again and the visual alarm signal can be erased even though the max. permissible amount of light-oil or even an excessive amount of light-oil is still in the separator. Whenever there is an alarm signal, it is essential in each case to check the device immediately to determine whether the light-oil has been properly extracted before shutting off the alarm. In addition, if alarm signal for over-fill was triggered off, an alarm signal for oil layer thickness cannot be triggered off.

Servicing

21

8. Servicing

8.1 Inspection

The alarm system must be inspected at regular intervals. This involves carrying out the function checks on the alarm system as well as checking the condition of the oil sensor, the over-fill sensor, the terminal connection box and the sensor holder.

8.2 Maintenance

The oil sensor and the over-fill sensor must be serviced. This normally takes place together with the separator maintenance, preferably twice a year.

➜ Take sensors out of the separator. ■ Alarm signal (red) flashes, operating signals go out. ■ Audible alarms sound (delayed 5 sec.).

➜ Clean oil sensor, over-fill sensor and sensor holder (e. g. with cold cleaner).

➜ Reinsert sensors into separator.

➜ Refill separator with water until it flows over into outlet (the oil sensor must immerge in water).

➜ Switch off alarm signal oil layer/over-fill and acknowledge (see functional check).

➜ The alarm device is ready for operation.

The electronic switching is applied to a blank which is coated on two sides. Display and operation elements are realised with a

front foil keyboard. Connection of intrinsically-safe circuit is carried out by terminals which are marked in blue colour and which

are arranged separatedly from the terminals for the non-intrinsically-safe circuits.
