Consider a Living Will The phrase “you must be cruel to be kind” is easier said than done. Imagine the horror and agony of having to instruct the hospitaltoswitchofflifesupportforalovedone.MyAuntcouldnot bring herself to make this decision as her elderly frail father, mygrandfather, layinavegetativestateforaprolongedperiodinhospital. As a father of two, I can’t even begin to imagine what this could mean where children are concerned. In another incident, a colleague’s wife followed her husband’s instructions to notprolonglifebyartificialmeansashelayinacomaasaresultofcerebralmeningitis, onlytohavehimawakenafterthemachinewasswitchedoffandfullyrecover!

For some, the decision to ‘shut down’ would be a form of passive euthanasia and be contradictory to their value system. Many approach this challenge with a deep-set faith in God and are given strength and comfort to make the best decision. It is for these reasons that I invite you to consider theoptionofalivingwill, therebyassistingyour loved ones to be able to make an informed decision. Fortunately the medical world is beginning to work with, rather than against, families inthesematters.

P i e te rma r i t z bu rgb u s i n e s s w o m e n , Bridget Jones (no,not the one you’re thinking of) is a wife,mother and successful business owner.

“I am the mother of three brilliant, unique young men that, despite my many commitments and sometimes absentpresence, all grew up into self-sufficient,independent, successful people,” said the mom of three proudly. “I think I failed horribly at balancing my business and personal life but, onethingthatwasnotnegotiablewasthatmychildrenalwayscamefirst.” Afterschool,Bridgetdabbled inworkandstudy and majored in travel! She then fell in love, got married and had children before venturing into the personnel field. “I lovethe personnel game. People fascinate me andfuelme.Recruitmentandselectionfastbecamemypassion.” A fewmonths afterher family moved to the Western Cape, Bridget stumbled on Pronel Personnel, a small business tucked away in a shopping mall. “I purchased the business with our R10000overdraftandthreemonthslater,Ihadrepaidtheoverdraftandmadesomepocket money! In 1997 we returned toPietermaritzburg and I established Pronellocally and, in 2003, I opened Pronel inDurban. It has been a fabulous journey. We have had our fair share of knocks, but we have survived!” As an individual and a business, Bridget is committedtoservingthecommunity. ThePronel family supportsnumerouscharities, especially those related to children and the elderly. She is very focused on educationof those in previously disadvantaged communities and is on the Board ofDirectorsofThePietermaritzburgChamberof Commerce and serves on the Board of PADCA.

If parents can manage their reactions totemper tantrums, then they can manage manyotherparentingsituations. What are Temper Tantrums? For young children, the temper tantrum canbethoughtofasacommonexpressionof anger and frustration. Tantrums canoccur in a variety of ways, including lying on the floor, kicking, screaming and evenholding their breath, which is referred to as a breath spell.Other examples includecrying, shouting, head banging, thumb/hand sucking, bed-wetting, stomping andrefusal to do things that are asked of them. However, while they might be frustratingfor parents, tantrums are a natural part of development because they allow pre-verbal children to express themselves. Tantrumsusually take place between the ages of two and three years, when a child begins to form their sense of self. This is when they begin to realise what they do and do not like.Thiscanelicitfrustrationwhentheydo

The Importance of Managing Tantrumsnot get what they want or when they feel misunderstood. What causes Temper Tantrums?Tantrums are not usually caused by one single thing and often are theresult of a combination of factors suchas: • Inconsistent discipline strategies •Criticalparents•Over-protectiveparents•Neglectful parents • A lack of attention• Parental emotional difficulties (such asdepression)•Maritalstrife•Siblingrivalry•Learningdifficulties Tantrumsthatlastforlongerthan15minutesand occur frequently (more than two orthree times a week) require professionalassistance.
