The Rosario of Perij is located in ZuliaState, Venezuela, was founded in 1989. Ithas an area of 3,543 km and has 67,712inhabitants (2001 census). Its capital is La

Villa del Rosario, the municipality consists ofthree parishes: Donaldo Garcia (7,489 pop.),El Rosario (53,953 pop.) and Sixto Zambrano(6,270 pop.).

Foundation.

The most frequently cited date for the founding of La Villadel Rosario is the May 9, 1722, by Don Juan de Chourio and

Iturbide, but there are discrepancies on this subject. Historian JohnBesson zulian indicates it was founded three years later by the son-successor and heir Chourio, Don Manuel Garcia de la Pea, first

Marquis of Perij. The King of Spain had ordered the pacificationof the Indians and the people of this land, and that was actually1775 when the governor of Maracaibo, Don Francisco de Santa

Cruz ordered to execute the orders of the King. Another versioncorresponds to the writer of the people, Mr. Osclido Montero, who

for the year of 1722 is ordered King to pacify the Indians andpopulate the area, but it is not until the following year that starts, ornext to another 150 men to open roads and build fortifications, and

finally, in 1724 founded the town of La Villa del Rosario.

streams flowing mainly in the rainy season.
