“I also thank my campaign team and many volunteers, led by my campaign manager Ben Ellingsen, and our local coordinators in Maryborough, Gympie, the South Burnett and Noosa, who helped with fundraising and ensured prepoll and voting booths were covered.

“I pay tribute to the other candidates in the race for Wide Bay. Putting your hand up as a candidate is a big decision and it does take a toll on you personally and those around you. You expect scrutiny and to be grilled on your plans and ambitions for your electorate and that’s a good feature of our democracy, striving to do the best you can to provide better opportunities for the people you seek to represent.

“I’m proud of the positive campaign my team ran, focusing on the top issues in Wide Bay. I now look forward to delivering on my plan to create local jobs, support local projects and assist local community groups in Wide Bay, including:

• A $20 million Wide Bay Burnett Jobs Package to create local jobs;• Funding to fix the Bruce Highway including Section C and planning for

Section D of the Cooroy to Curra four lane upgrade, a new interchange at Tinana, and improving flood immunity at Gympie, Tiaro and Aldershot.

• $2 million towards upgrading the Cooloola Noosa Road to create better access and opportunities for tourism and agriculture;

• $22,000 for a new kitchen and bathroom at Noosa’s Men’s Shed; • $20,000 for a new kitchen at the Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club; • $400,000 to improve access at Noosa National Park; • $396,698 for CCTV cameras to improve community safety at Murgon;• $25,000 to extend Murgon’s Men’s Shed• $20,000 for a new acoustic ceiling at Murgon’s PCYC;• $200,000 to the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce for CCTV cameras at

Cooroy;• Mobile phone coverage to Poona and along the Wide Bay Highway

between Woolooga and Kilkivan;• $395,000 to renovate historic buildings along Kent and Wharf Streets,

Maryborough; and• $68,000 to fund a Men’s Shed at Tin Can Bay.

“I am committed to embarking on a new era of solid representation to ensure that every local family, household and business has every opportunity to share in our nation’s prosperity and realise their goals.”

Up and coming TUSCAN FEAST 25th and 26th June and

10th July. Please ring to book.

LLEW O’BRIEN THANKS WIDE BAYNewly elected Federal Member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien, today said he deeply respects the faith and

trust the electors of Wide Bay have placed in him.Speaking at the Declaration of the Poll in Maryborough , Mr O’Brien committed to serving all Wide Bay

communities, to the best of his ability, in the best interests of the Wide Bay electorate.“I thank the electors of Wide Bay for entrusting me with the great responsibility of being their

representative in the Australian Parliament for the next three years,” Mr O’Brien said.“I thank my wife Sharon and my three children Rees, William and Yve, for their love and support and belief

in me, it sustained me through the long campaign, and I am incredibly grateful for the sacrifices they made along the way.

“I thank the former Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss and his wife Lyn, for their support, encouragement and guidance.

A man hated his wife’s cat and decided to get rid of it. He drove 20 blocks away from home and dropped the cat there. The cat was already walking up the driveway when he approached his home. The next day, he decided to drop the cat 40 blocks away but the same thing happened. He kept on increasing the number of blocks but the cat kept coming home before him. A last he decided to drive a few miles away, turn right, then left, past the bridge, then right again and another right and so on until he reached what he thought was a perfect spot and dropped the cat there.

Hours later, the man calls his wife at home and asked her, ‘Is the cat there yet?”

“Of course, why do you ask?” answered the wife. Frustrated, the man said, “Put that cat on the phone, I’m lost and I need

directions.”

MURGON DAIRY AND HERITAGE MUSEUMJuly has been a busy month with visitors once again from Interstate, local as well as New Zealand and Canada.

The museum is still receiving favourable comments in our Visitor’s Book. These comments are always a pleasure to read and make our efforts worthwhile.

The volunteers are planning for our Heritage Day to be held on Saturday 1st October. Once again we will have The Animal Nursery which has proved most popular with children in previous years. There will be working displays, entertainment and much more. We also have our canteen with a variety of food and drinks. The September edition of Murgon Moments will have full details of what is happening and what will be available. Mark this date on your calendars.

Planning a Wedding? The Museum’s Chapel, although not large, makes for an ideal setting. The verandahs of “Castra” and “Trinity Homestead “ are perfect for photographs. If you are interested in our Museum as a possible venue, call and make arrangements to have a look at what we have to offer.

The Museum is desperately looking for new members. You may wish to become a volunteer on the days that we are open, or you can just come along to our meetings or help with catering when we have bus tours. Any time given is valuable and anyone with new ideas is welcome. Please contact the Museum on 41 695001. Open 7 days a week. 9.30 - 12.30.

Make sure you read the September issue of Murgon Moments for all the details of our Heritage Day. Joy Fennell

SOUTH BURNETT PARKINSON’S SUPPORT GROUP

The Group had a very enjoyable morning when we visited the Wondai Regional Art Gallery for our July social outing. Upon arriving and being welcomed by ‘Jenny’, one of the volunteers of the Gallery, we enjoyed a lovely morning tea in the area known as ‘The Studio’ and lots of ‘happy’ conversation. Jenny told us about the history of the building which we all found very interesting such as that it was once the original Wondai Station Master’s house. It is well worth a visit just to see the beautiful floors.

Non-profit community groups are able to use the Studio area for free and there is no entry fee to the gallery to view all the lovely paintings and other works of craft. It is well worth a visit – we can highly recommend it.

The next meeting of our Support Group will be MONDAY AUGUST 29 at Castra Aged Care Facility. The guest speaker for the morning will be Prue Collard from Body, Fuel and Fitness. The meeting time is 10am to noon and we invite all interested members of the Community to come along and enjoy the speaker and meet new people.

World Parkinson’s Month is in September and we hope to make it a very special and informative month. Our special September guests will be demonstrating the skills of old-time dancing and encouraging lots of participation. It has been discovered that dancing is good for people with Parkinsons – we hope you can make it. For details phone Carmen on 5486 1268 or Darryl on 41 683116.

There are about 18,000 people in Queensland with Parkinson’s disease, so if you know someone with this disease, encourage them to come along to our meetings (which are very informative) and see what happens for themselves. We look forward to meeting you.

BURRUMBUTTOCK HAY RUNNERS PRESENTATION PROSTON

PUBLIC LIBRARY

On Wednesday 27th July, Proston Public Library played host to 28 guests who attended the library to hear a presentation by representatives of the recent Burrumbuttock Hay Run to Ilfracombe, Longreach and Winton.

Mrs Gina Gleich narrated a powerpoint presentation and Mr Lance Frahm spoke of the many human interest interviews that he had undertaken with local farmers who were in Ilfracombe to receive their allocation of hay.

The presentation and talk was really well received and the relaxed manner of the speakers encouraged participation from the audience and many questions were put forward to Gina and Lance and Gina’s parents Geoff and Linda Rea also told of their experiences along the way as well.

This is the second hay run that Gina’s husband, Paul Gleich has undertaken and they are now planning a third hay run in January 2017. A lovely morning tea was held in the library and many stories exchanged. A wonderful event enjoyed by all.

ARE YOU A NAIL?As the story goes, they built a new church building and people came from far and wide to see it. They admired its beauty! Up on the roof, a little nail heard the people praising everything about the lovely structure-except

the nail! No one even knew he was there, and he became angry and jealous. “ If I am that insignificant, nobody will miss me if I quit! So the nail released its hold, slid down

the roof, and fell in the mud. That night it rained and rained. Soon, the shingle that had no nail blew away, and the roof began to leak. The water streaked the walls and the beautiful murals. The plaster

began to fall, the carpet was stained, and the pulpit Bible was ruined by water. All this because a little nail decided

to quit! But what of the nail? While holding the shingle, it was

obscure but it was also useful. Buried in the mud it was just as obscure, but now it was useless and would soon

be eaten up by rust! The moral of the story-EVERY MEMBER IS IMPORTANT

TO THE COMMUNITY! You may, like the nail, feel obscure at times, but just like the nail, your absence is felt. When you are not present

for meetings, in some way it hurts. We are all a part of the community.

When you read this, try and substitute community for an organization you should be in and see how you go.

REMEMBER – NOT EVERYBODY CAN DO EVERYTHING BUT EVERYBODY CAN DO SOMETHING, ESPECIALLY IF

THEY WORK AS ONE.

SERVICES DROP UNDER LABORIn Estimates Hearings the Palaszczuk Govt has been forced to admit that, despite the employment of a further 8,000 public sector workers since coming to government, standards and services to Queenslanders has declined.Qld’ers should rightfully expect improvements in the performance of all government DepartmentsWhy are student learning targets missed in 14 of the 24 reporting categories that the Education Department reports against, despite the employment of thousands of new staff ?Why does the performance data from the Communities & Child Safety Department show response times to investigate suspected abuse of children is getting worse with only 22 % investigations requiring action starting on time? Why are only 62 % of calls to the Dept of Transport’s call centre answered within three minutes when the target is 80%?These are important questions about services that Queenslanders expect from their State Government. This Labor Government has undertaken over 90 reviews during its 16 months in office.Qld’ers want to see results from their State Government, not endless reviews and hidden reports.

Lee was so very different for Graham Mitchell who was our speaker for June. He talked about showing flowers. We all enjoyed lunch together after both meetings. Anyone interested in going on our bus to the Laidley Spring Festival on Friday September 11 please phone me

If you want to know anything about future meetings please phone 4168 6238 after dark. Until next time Happy Gardening

PCYC South Burnett.Welcome to the Winter edition of the PCYC South Burnett news letter. During the past few months we have

seen a few changes in your Club and School Age Care at Taabinga State School. It is only with your help that the club is able to improve its facilities and provide the programs it does to the community.

As PCYC is a registered not for profit community charity organisation, every cent spent in the club goes back out into your community and as such makes a difference to the lives of you, your family and your friends. It is your community that benefits from your participation and support. Being a registered charity gift recipient also means that all donations over $2 are tax deductable.

It is only with the support of you and business supporters of the local community that we are able to provide the things we do. For example, the support of the gymnastics program through Local Search Directories.

As a provider of many services to the community and your children, parents and yourself, many persons are truly unaware of what it is the club does in your community.

We continue to run two sessions of the RUBY program, one in Cherbourg and another in Murgon to support women of Domestic Violence. This program is a referral based program and referral forms are available from either the PCYC, Court House or your local Domestic Violence Service.

This program is FREE to all participants and all costs are borne by PCYC South Burnett with a Police Officer and a female instructor. A program that will build you out of isolation, increase your self-esteem and bring you back into society through health, fitness and a social atmosphere with others in the same position you are. You are not alone, please contact PCYC South Burnett, or your local DV

As a registered Sporting Schools Provider, we currently supply coaches to schools between Nanango, Kingaroy and Goomeri. These are all funded through a $100 million project through the Australian Government. Please contact us to see what we may be able to do for you. You can come here, or we can come to you!

As part of the Sporting Schools program through Gymnastics Australia, we can provide qualified gymnastics coaches to assist with any school gymnastics curriculum.

50th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan 18th August 1966

Operation SmithfieldThe most written about action of

Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War and a fair bit of it, to begin with, was wishful thinking.

The D Company 6 RAR action proved the worth of patrolling in depth and in strength. D Company disrupted what was believed to be preparations for an attack in regimental strength on the 1st Australian Task Force area. The enemy was very well organised and equipped and showed skill in his battle drills while the performance of D Company showed good command and control throughout the battle. Lt David Sabben 12 Pl D Co on the battlefield after the

fightThe battle itself developed from a basic lack of

knowledge of enemy strength, locations, capabilities and intentions and involved A, B & D Companies plus an APC troop with artillery support; most of 1ATF had little idea of what was really happening. The following days were spent trying to locate the retreating enemy and eventually a Corps-sized sweep named Operation Toledo was mounted to maintain pressure on the VC although it accomplished little.

Continued from front page, Sergeant retires after 34 years service to Goomeri.

MC Inspector Stephen Donnelly of Gympie acknowledged special guests Federal member Llew O’Brien, State member Tony Perrett and Assistant Police Commissioner Alistair Dawson and told how Sgt Warren Lohmann during his time in Goomeri has guided the community through many challenging times including the loss of the area’s primary industry in the Murgon meatworks, and the devastating 2011 & 2013 floods. Warren has been an invaluably active participant in numerous community groups, events and organisations in the local community over the years including the Goomeri State School Adopt-a-Cop,

coaching junior sport, local Lions club, Freemasons, the famous Goomeri Pumpkin Festival and many more. Sgt Warren Lohmann is a highly respected member of this small community as was witnessed in the above photo’s and his local knowledge and dedication to the town will be greatly missed.

Assistant Commissioner Alistair Dawson praised Sgt Warren Lohmann on his service to the Queensland Police force and read out all the levels of achievement Warren had obtained in his role with the Queensland Police Force. Warren’s 34 year tenure at Goomeri has been one of the longest periods of continuous service in the Queensland Police Service’s history; an achievement that is not possible without the wholehearted support of the local community who have always had a familiar face to turn to in their hour of need.

Speakers including local business man Nev Holden and Mark Hasselbach and Trish Macarthur from the

Goomeri show society and the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival committee thanked Sgt Warren Lohmann for his outstanding service over many years. Tansey farmer Bill Silburn on behalf of the Goomeri community presented Sgt Warren Lohmann with a specially carved and engraved Baton.

A beautifully framed drawing of the Goomeri Police Station by local artist Glen Cunningham and a highly decorated Aboriginal painting from the local Wakka Wakka people was presented to Sgt Warren Lohmann.

Sgt Warren Lohmann was very humble and sincere in his reply, thanking the other members of the police force, his wife Julie and family members and the community and service clubs for their support. Warren as we now know you, said a major part of his Police Service was to carry out the responsibilities entrusted in him as a policeman and to protect the community and come home safe after a job and to try and live with some of the worst experiences and go to work the next day. A very moving letter from his daughter was read by Warren’s wife Julie that brought tears to many in the room.

Warren you have done us proud, we will miss you, and the friendly wave as you patrolled the Burnett Highway. Put your feet up and enjoy your retirement with your wife Julie.

NEWS FROM THE ROTARY CLUB OF MURGONThe Rotary Club of Murgon has been very busy. The Club recently donated $1,000 to Life Flight, (previously

named Care Flight), an organisation which has assisted many South Burnett residents in times of medical emergencies. They have also donated $1,000 to The McGrath Foundation, whose breast care nurses provide such wonderful support for women with breast cancer. These funds were raised from the annual Barambah Bush Bash, which is held at the beginning of May each year.

Pictured is local breast care nurse, Ros Melmeth, accepting the presentation cheque from Mark Quinn, President, and Val Hodson, Treasurer. Ros encourages anyone who requires assistance to contact her on 0467 718 068. Leave a message if she is unavailable and she will return your call at her earliest opportunity.

The Club has also commenced a programme to assist the Ration Shed Museum in Cherbourg, to help establish a more efficient ICT network, through the knowledge and efforts of one of their members, Mr Farhad

Kamal, who refurbishes second hand equipment in his spare time. It is proposed that the completed network includes a server, wireless access points, 10 laptops and a network printer.

The photo depicts Mark Quinn, President, presenting the first laptop to Sandra Morgan, Chairperson, and Robyn Hofmeyr, Ration Shed Co-ordinator.

Several members have also been occupied for quite some time organising the annual Murgon Music Muster, which will be held from 3rd to 6th November. Keep this date in mind for a wonderful event, which brings visitors and their dollars to our local communities.

The EarlyAct Club from Murgon State School, have also been busy and recently donated $287.10 to Rotary’s Polio Plus campaign, which aids in the eradication of polio throughout the world. The children raised these funds through their “Paint a Pinkie” campaign.

Owners Jason and Sue kinsella said they are really excited about this years festival as the Italian theme really seems to have struck a chord with people, Jason said that last year’s numbers were amazing , we hoped for a few hundred people and ended up with 850 through the gates and ticket sales this year are already ahead of last year, with people coming from all over Queensland and northern NSW, it is just fantastic to talk to so many visitors who have never been to the South Burnett before and they send me emails afterwards just raving about how beautiful it is and they can’t wait to bring back friends and family. This is the true value of tourism but it is so pleasing to see it in action.

We once again have the headline act Fortunato Isgro who is the star of the Italian music circuit and always a crowd favourite, we have also been fortunate to secure the talents of Meg Kiddle, one of Queensland Opera’s top Sopranos not to mention the local 12 piece big Band who turned up and stole the show last year and no event would be complete without the talents of our very own Oz Sax Legend Tom McKenzie. Susan said that she has also been slaving away in the Kitchen trialling some new Italian dishes which will be sure to delight.

So if you are looking for an amazing day full of food Wine Music and Fun then Moffatdale Ridge is the Place to be on the 10th of September and at only $10.00 entry and a courtesy coach transfer to and from the Festival tickets are sure to sell fast. ROAD TRAFFIC CRASH EXERCISE IN KILKIVANEarly July saw Auxiliary

fire crews from Kilkivan and Goomeri join with Queensland Ambulance First Responder groups from Kenilworth to Kilkivan carrying out a simulated two vehicle road crash with multiple casualties at Kilkivan.

As the first responders arrived on the scene they were confronted with a scenario of two vehicles that had collided head on. As they checked the occupants of the vehicles, they found two casualties entrapped and the call was put through to the communications centre for the Fire Service to be turned out.

On arrival, firefighters were tasked with gaining better access for casualty treatment. Using spreaders and cutters, firefighters removed front and rear doors from both sides of the vehicle. As further treatment was given, it was clear one patient had back pain and would require a backboard to aid removal from the car.

Firefighters were tasked with removing the remaining windows, and cut the roof from the vehicle to allow better access for positioning the backboard for removal of the patient from the car.

All Casualties were made ready for transport to hospital.A big thank you to the QAS Paramedics who gave up their time to oversee the exercise and to the people who

acted as casualties and a special thank you to Keith and Gail Hawkins who gave their time, and also provided vehicles for use in the exercise.

The Anglican Church in Goomeri this year celebrated its centenary with over 200 people attending the celebration and ringing the church bell 100 times. The church was officially opened on 12th March 1916 by Archbishop Donaldson in the middle of World War 1. The celebration cake made by Marcia McIntosh, and beautifully iced by Shez McIntosh was cut by Alison Coomber, daughter of Ernest Smith who was the vicar for Goomeri from 1926-1928.

Paddy and Shamus were hitchhiking. “It’s best if we split up,” said Paddy. “I will meet you in the next city under the town hall clock”.Later that night Shamus was waiting at the appointed place when Paddy drove up in a swank car.“Where the hell did you get that?”Paddy explained that he had just walked a little way when a beautiful woman picked him up. She drove into the woods, got out and took all her clothes off.“She said I could have anything I wanted, so I took the car,” said Paddy.“Good choice too,” said Shamus. “You’d look ridiculous in her clothes.”

RESERVE FORCES DAY 2017 Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd July

The theme for Wondai in 2017 is the work of the Royal Australian Navy in 1917 in distant waters and that of the RAN Naval Reserve both as members of the various guard detachments in Australia and of the Bridging Train in the Sinai, all of which was unsung and largely, as a consequence, unknown to most Australians.

It is hoped that on the occasion of RFD 2017 we may hear words of the work of the current Royal Australian Naval Reserve situated throughout the country and manning positions on ships not easily filled through regular arrangements.

Kathy’s CommentsCouncil Community Grants now OpenCouncil’s next round of Community Grants is now open and closes at the end of August. Community Groups have the opportunity to apply for up to $3000 for projects or events in our region. The forms are available on our website or ask at any Council Customer Service Centre.Council Listening ToursThe Mayor and all of the Councillors are travelling around the region to be available to meet with members of the public as part of a strategy to improve our communication with ratepayers. These tours are being held on Wednesday evenings commencing at 5.30pm. The dates for this area are Murgon September 28th, Wondai Sep 21st, Durong August 31st and Proston October 12th.Rates changed to six monthlyWe are changing the rating period to six monthly to help save Council money in administration. There are opportunities for anyone wishing to continue to pay quarterly or even weekly to organise this through a direct debit arrangement with the discount allowable if the amount due is paid in full by the due date. Please contact 41899100 and ask to speak to someone in the rates team to organise this. The discount period for the introduction of the change to six monthly rating will be extended to 60 days to help with the transition. Farmer’s Nights around the RegionWe have some grant funding available that was part of the funding for FarmFest that we plan to use for some more Farmer’s nights around the area. There will be functions held at Tablelands, Cloyna and Mondure for farmers in this area. The dates will be advertised soon and farmers will have an opportunity for a free night out to share some fellowship and fun.State Government Controlled Roads need more DollarsCouncil continually gets blamed for a lot of the roads in our region that are out of our control. We need to lobby the State Government for more money for our main roads. Council does not spend rate payer’s money on these roads as they are not under our control. The roads that are under the control of the State Government in our area are the Murgon Gayndah Road, Lancaster’s Road, Byee Road past the Wheatland’s School, Barambah Rd past Bjelke Petersen Dam, Redgate Rd, the Burnett Highway through to Nanango, the Bunya Highway from Goomeri through Murgon to Kingaroy, Wondai Proston Road, Proston Boondooma Rd, Okeden Rd past Boondooma Dam, Wondai Chinchilla Rd and the Mundubbera Durong Rd. Petitions and requests for upgrades to these roads need to go to the Main Roads Department. The contact phone number is 54820333 or [email protected]. If you see Council workers on Main Roads it is because Council is contracted by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to do some of the maintenance on State controlled roads. There is not enough funding for our Main roads and we need to lobby our State Government representatives for more funding for these roads in our region.

Dinner with the CaptainsCongratulations to Carl Rackemann and the Relay for Life Team for another fabulous Dinner with the Captains. The South Burnett is second to none when it comes to raising money to fight against cancer and it was great to see so much support on the night. The Relay for Life will be held this year in Kingaroy on October 8th and 9th so please consider registering a team.Proston/Hivesville QCWA MeetingI had the privilege of chairing the combined Annual General Meeting of these two associations. It is great to see these groups going so well. We really need to support our rural woman and to make sure that the skills of cooking and craft that they can pass on are not forgotten. It is heartening to hear that there are now some city ladies joining the QCWA to learn these skills and be part of a network to support rural women.

Contact Details and Meeting OpportunitiesAs always I am working on following up jobs and concerns that have been brought to my attention. JOKEA man walks into a restaurant with a full-grown emu behind him. The

waitress asks them for their orders. The man says, “A hamburger, fries and a Coke,” and turns to the emu, “What’s yours?” “I’ll have the same,” says the emu. A short time later, the waitress returns with the order. “That will be $15.40, please,” and the man reaches into his pocket and pulls out the exact change for payment.

The next day, the man and the emu come again and the man says, “A hamburger, fries and a Coke.” The emu says, “I’ll have the same.” Again the man reaches into his pocket and pays with exact change. This becomes routine until the two enter again. “The usual?” asks the waitress. “No, this is Friday, so I will have a steak, a baked potato and a salad,” says the man. “Same,” says the emu. Soon the waitress brings the order and says, “That will be $32.62.” Once again, the man pulls the exact change out of his pocket and places it on the table. The waitress cannot hold back her curiosity any longer, “Excuse me, sir, how do you manage to always come up with the exact change in your pocket every time?”

“Well,” says the man, “Several years ago I was cleaning the attic when I found an old lamp. When I rubbed it, a genie appeared and offered me two wishes. My first wish was that if I ever had to pay for anything, I would just put my hand in my pocket and the right amount of money would always be there.”

“That’s brilliant !” says the waitress. “Most people would ask for a million dollars or something but you’ll always be as rich as you want for as long as you live !” “That’s right. Whether it’s a gallon of milk or a Rolls Royce, the exact money is always there.” says the man. The waitress asks, “What’s with the emu?” The man sighs and answers, “My second wish was for a chick with long legs and who agrees with everything I say.”
