TERM 2, WEEK 6 – 6 June 2016
From the Principal Jim Michalanney
Student Free Day this Friday 10th June - Developing
Growth Mindsets with James Anderson: this Friday
our staff will be engaged in training in regard to how
we encourage students, and ourselves, to have a
‘Growth Mindset’. Those of us with a ‘Growth
Mindset’ hold the belief that they are capable of
learning and achieving with effort. We also want to
encourage in students the ability to be resilient learners who have the
belief that they can achieve through persistence and effort.
Senior Formal: last Friday approximately 230 of our senior students
transformed into visions of splendour as they attended the MBHS
Senior Formal. It is always wonderful to see the pride and care our
senior students take in their presentation and participation in this
special night. Many thanks to the organising committee especially
students Hollie Carson, Liviya Hobbs and Misty Verral and staff
including Mr Doug Gray, Ms Kara Stevens and Ms Rachel Balutussen.
Well done to all parents and caregivers on helping prepare their
child/ren for this special evening. Please look for all the glamour of the
evening in our next Newsletter.
In the Steps of Heroes: The Murray Bridge RSL are offering the
opportunity for our students, who are currently in Years 9 and 10, to
participate in an essay competition. Two prizes will be awarded with
the winning students undertaking a guided tour of the places where
Australian soldiers fought and died during the First World War. This
will coincide with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the end
of the Great War in 1918 and a highlight of the tour will be attending
the Anzac Dawn Service at the Villers-Bretonneux War Cemetery.
Information has been distributed to students at a recent assembly.
Please contact Ms Helen Peake or Ms Barb Quast if you need further
information.
Transition Meeting: the Transition meeting for students and their
parents who are currently in Year 7 begins at 6.00pm and goes to
approximately 8pm on this Wednesday June the 8th. The evening will
comprise a brief information session from myself and key staff,
followed by a school tour and will finish with Pumpkin Soup and Bread
Rolls and general conversation at around 8.00pm.
Visit by State Education Minister Susan Close in Term 3: it has been
confirmed that the State Minister for Education, Hon. Ms Susan Close
will be visiting the school next term in Week 4, 16 August at 9.30 –
10.30am. We are very keen on discussing with her the growing need
for upgrading of facilities as well as showcasing some of our wonderful
programmes.
Say No to Domestic Violence In Australia, an average of one woman a week is killed
by a current or former partner. It is well recognised that
women are often at the greatest risk of violence from
people they know, and often within close relationships.
We wish to encourage healthy relationships which are
built on the values of equality and respect. In a healthy
relationship, power is shared and there is no attempt to
make one partner subject to the will of the other.
Non-violent communication is needed to resolve
conflict and when people need ask for support to work
through relationship issues instead of resorting to
violence. Ms Ruth Mussger has a report of an evening
spotlight meeting giving greater detail of the impact of
domestic violence later in this newsletter.
Murray Bridge High School Says No!
Murray Bridge High School will be selling Beanies to
support Domestic Violence Awareness. Beanies will be
$8 each, with $1 of proceeds going towards Domestic
Violence Awareness. The beanies will be available for
purchase from Miss Partridge or Mr McEvoy in the
Counselling Centre this week. The school is
acknowledging the ‘SAY NO to Domestic Violence’ day
on Wednesday, 29th of June.

Social Networking Workshops for Year 8’s by Rachel Baldwin, PCW & Helen Partridge, Year 8 Coordinator
On Monday, 30th of May the Year 8’s had the opportunity to
take part in some workshops around the topic of social
networking. Two presenters from the Schools Ministry Group
‘Life Matters’ team used media, storytelling, conversation and
interactive activities to get students thinking about their own
such as responsible posting, online safety, cyber bullying and
the real-life effects of how we treat people online. Students
were encouraged to share their thoughts and discuss online
interaction from their own perspective. The presentation
guided students through a step-by-step framework for
successful management of life online, focusing on wise action
and a healthy respect for self and others.
Students were encouraged to develop their own filtering
process which will help them to judge whether something
should be treated as private or public.
Sometimes as parents and caregivers, we can feel as though
we lack the knowledge and skills to guide our young people
through this new digital world that they have grown up with.
However, it’s important to educate ourselves about the
unique challenges these ‘digital natives’ face, to ask questions
and have the important conversations with our teenagers so
we can provide the guidance they need. Although times have
changed, the values of kindness, fairness and respect still apply
to the online world, just as they do in other areas of life. We
hope that your young person found the workshop enjoyable
and that the information the students received will support
you as parents and caregivers in providing guidance around
this important topic.
We would like to thank the Interchurch Council-Ministry in
Schools Task Group for contributing funds in support of this
event.
Current statistics show that one in four women and their children
are the victims of physical, sexual, emotional, psychological and
spiritual abuse in Australia, with rural statistics slightly higher than
our city counterparts. As a school community we know that
Domestic Violence can impact significantly on the health and
wellbeing of our young people and their ability to access
education and a prosperous life.
The evening had many speakers and I would like to focus on the
key ones that relate to our community at Murray Bridge High.
The evening spotlight seminar included the keynote speaker
Professor Sarah Wendt, Professor of Social Work at Flinders
University, who has conducted research into domestic violence in
rural areas. Many of the stories she shared from interviews with
victims reinforced how domestic violence impacts on physical and
mental health, housing, employment and social relationships within
the community for both women and their children.
Jesse Budel, a previous young citizen of the year as well as SA
regional Murraylands-Riverland Youth Awardee spoke about his
family’s experiences, and paid homage to his mother and the
decisions she made to protect herself and her children when
confronted with domestic violence. Jesse is currently studying a
PhD at the Elder Conservatorium of Music and reflected on
domestic violence through poignant song choices. He reinforced
that we all make conscious choices about the people we are and
want to become.
Frauke Hobbs from headspace Murray Bridge presented some
alarming statistics about the mental health and wellbeing of young
people in our community. She reflected on the high percentage of
kids for whom anxiety, depression and homelessness could be
attributed to conflict and domestic violence in the home.
A group of teachers joined the workshops run during the day on
‘Safe Bystander Action’. The 5 key strategies included:
Don’t mind your own business
Put yourself in someone else’s shoes
Treat them like a friend
Don’t neglect your personal safety
Decide whether to call the police
As a community it is not okay for us to stand by and say ‘not my
problem’. Murray Bridge Police have committed to attending and
prosecuting all reported incidence of domestic violence in our
community. We all need to be aware of and use safe bystander
action and get the message out there in our schools, workplaces,
sporting clubs and venues, places of worship, organisations and
friendship groups that violence and abuse of the ones we love has
no place in our society.
Our school counsellors Sarah Florey-Fox and Isaac McEvoy are
available for confidential counselling and support for students and
can be contacted on 85319500.

SAASTA Power Cup by Miranda Mulder
On 19th of May, the Murray Bridge High School SAASTA team
departed for the Aboriginal Power Cup. Both the girls’ and boys’
team played 9 games of football over the two day carnival which
was held at Alberton Oval. The students participated in a Career
Workshop on Thursday as well as creating a Motor Accident
Commission Commercial and performing their War Cry for the
judges. The Cultural Dance rehearsal was on Friday and then the
dance was performed by all students before the AFL game on
Saturday night.
The awards ceremony was held at Uni SA on Saturday morning
where the Murray Bridge High School SAASTA staff were
awarded with the ‘Staff Leadership’ award. As well as this, both
the Murray Bridge High School teams earned the right to be in
the Grand Final by completing their work throughout the
semester, having a high attendance rate and showing good
sportsmanship, teamwork and leadership at the carnival.
The grand final was played as a curtain raiser for the Port Power
vs Westcoast Eagles game on Saturday afternoon. Both teams
played well but were unable to secure a win with Christies Beach
Girls’ team and Mawson Lakes Boys’ team coming home with the
cup. Overall, it was a fun and successful carnival, the students are
to be commended for their efforts throughout the semester
which lead to them getting into the Grand Final. A big thank you
to the staff who attended and gave up a large portion of the
weekend to make the carnival a success!

Year 8/9 Boys Knockout Football
Our Year 8/9 Boys Football team kicked off the 2016
competition with a very impressive performance which
resulted in two wins from two games against Unity and Upper
South East. The win against Unity also ensured that the Mellon
Cup made its way back into our trophy cabinet. The boys
advanced through to the second round where we will meet
Victor Harbor High School. Well done boys.
Year 10 Boys AFL Vs Blackwood High School
A group of Year 10 boys had the opportunity to represent the
school in the first Interschool football game to be hosted on
the Murray Bridge High School oval for a number of years.
Our boys played well and came away with a narrow victory
13.4(82) to 11.7(73). It was great to see and hear all of the
support from the students and teachers who came out and
watched the game. We look forward to hopefully hosting
many more football matches here at school in the future.

Business and Enterprise by Cathy Schiller
Business and Enterprise as a faculty has subjects that could be
seen as diverse and different. However it could also be said
that they all link together in the way the subjects work with
students to develop real world skills that can be transferred to
the workplace, for example:
Home Economics
Students have been working hard this term to increase their
skills in both the kitchen and catering. Year 9s have been recipe
testing soup and scrolls and producing bulk lots in preparation
for the Year 7 Transition Evening. Stage 1 students created a
wide array of dishes for last week’s Formal. They worked in
small groups to research suitable products to present at the
formal including product testing, job allocations and costing.
Technology Studies
This year an all-girls Year 9 STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics) class has been created, aligning
with the schools commitment to further engagement in these
learning areas. The girls have investigated future applications
for the 3D printing industry using Google Sketch-up CAD
design to learn modelling for houses and a small 3D printed
item.
They have learned welding
and fabrication techniques
in metal and made their
own Wind Chimes from
mild steel rod using oxy-
acetylene braze welding.
The next task will be to
design and build a project
in wood. Lauren and
Willow (right) are happy
with their finished creation.
Year 12 metalwork students have begun working on their major
project BBQ’s. Students spent the previous term investigating
and planning their projects from early paper drawings to refined
computer generated plans. The BBQ’s range in designs from the
traditional rectangular Webber design to spit roasters and
artistic variations. Completed pictures of student work to come
in future term newsletters.
Personal Learning Plan (PLP)
In its new format this year students have been working to
complete their Personal Learning Plan (PLP). The PLP is
designed to help students plan for their future and assists them
in choosing subjects for Stage 1 and 2. Focusing on their
capabilities students investigate possible career choices, they
then plan and organise a week's work placement in the career
of their choice to gain an insight into its suitability as a career
pathway. Students this year have been to a variety of employers
including Tailem Bend Primary School, Gnomes Landscaping,
Pure on 6th Hairdressing and G.J. Clarke Pty Ltd. We are
extremely grateful for the support of local and regional
employers.
Workplace Practices
In Workplace Practices students also undertake a work
placement. This year students have focused on work in society,
the changing nature of work and finding employment. Students
are required to approach employers and arrange their work
placement. Having completed this work placement they reflect
on knowledge and skills developed in real world situations.
Guest speakers from Regional Development Australia and
Monarto Zoo are coming to speak to students to discuss the
job scene in Murray Bridge in coming weeks.

Year 8 Literacy Excursion to Monarto
Zoological Park by Kara Stevens - Literacy Teacher
Literacy is not just about reading and writing in a classroom, it
involves many forms and mediums. To help improve students’
literacy skills, as a class we went on an excursion to Monarto
Zoological Park where students worked on creating films based
on weeks of planning and research. The unit has a very strong
literacy component focusing on language, grammar, spelling,
punctuation and ICTs. In addition the assessment task allows for
creativity and group work through film making. During the visit
to Monarto students filmed the many species the zoo has on
display with a primary focus on the White Rhino, Meerkats and
Chimpanzees whilst focusing on the conservation programs that
Monarto is involved with.
Education guide Ian Walton took the class around the zoo
which gave them an in depth look at how Monarto functions
and allowed for students to ask questions, gain insight and how
they could use the information in their film based on a chosen
African animal. This unit of work provided students with the
opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and teach others
through their assessment work as well as gain social literacy
skills. Feedback from students indicated that they thoroughly
enjoyed the learning experience:
“We had a fantastic experience! The Rhinos were amazing!” “As a group we were lucky to film the chimps close-up which was an opportunity not many people get. We are so glad we went on this literacy excursion to Monarto Zoo!” “The excursion was extremely fun because we had a close-up experience with the Meerkats!”
SACE Visual Art by Alan Bruse
Year 11 and 12 SACE Visual Art and Design students are
currently well under way with their studies for semester one.
Both year levels are pushing boundaries and producing some
outstanding work. Students in Year 12 producing advanced
work are: Jazmyn Hikuroa, Jade Collins, Trang Tran, Lemuel
Madula and Courtney Arbon.
Students in Year 11 doing extremely well are: Tiana Pickering,
Claudia Small, Isabella Di Chiera, Erika Pellizzaroli, Ellen
Saunders, and Natasha Mcloughlin.
All the students in Year 11 and 12 classes are producing the
best work they can, upholding the schools value of
excellence. Their work will be exhibited in the up and coming
SALA exhibition in August, at the Murray Bridge Council
foyer, which should be a very exciting exhibition.
Pictured below are some artworks from Natasha Mcloughlin,
who has produced outstanding tonal realism pencil and
charcoal drawings of her friends for her major Year 11
artwork.
SACE Visual Art teacher Mr Bruse has been working closely
with senior art students linking practising professional artists
for influence, inspiration and direction in student’s studies;
results are outstanding.

SAPOL – “The Fatal Five” Workshop
On Wednesday 11th May, SAPOL gave a presentation, on “The
Fatal Five” to our ILC students. This was very well received by the
young people and it also gave them an opportunity to interact
with SAPOL personnel and to ask questions regarding Road
Safety and what their responsibilities as young drivers are.
SAPOL – Sex and the Law
A very informative session was held at the ILC on Tuesday 31st
May. The law was spelt out very clearly and we hope our young
people take on board the information given.
Careers Expo
On Friday 13th May, our Certificate III Business students put their
theory knowledge into practice with the “Soup Kitchen” at the
Careers Expo. They did a fantastic job on the day and they are to
be commended on their behaviour and the manner in which they
interacted with their customers. The pumpkin soup was a real
winner!
Some of our ex-students and a couple of current students were
volunteers at the Expo. They were able to meet and greet
students and community members coming into the Expo and
helped to survey people. This is a great way to give back to the
community.
Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea
The ILC held Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday
26th May. The weather held out for our Sausage Sizzle
outside and in our Boardroom we had a table full of
delicious cakes, biscuits, tea, coffee and juice which was
enjoyed by everyone. We also had bath salts and bath
bombs for sale. The day was full on with the students,
their families and passers by donating to the Cancer
Council.
A big thank you to all staff involved from baking to
cooking the BBQ and to Kayden and Bonica for helping
on the day.
We would like to thank our sponsors, Farm Fresh Market,
Wal’s Bakery, Bakers Delight, and Meat Barn Marketplace
who kindly donated sausages, onions, bread and biscuits.
At the end of the day we raised $506.00 for the Cancer
Council.
The ILC also shared a stand with ICAN. Two of our student
leaders were given the opportunity to be part of the VIP tour of the Careers Expo.
