HISTORY

Murray, Kentucky is a charmingcollege town sitting in the heartof Calloway County. It enjoys arich history with buildings and

sites that are over a century old. That’s not tosay that it is stuck in the past, however.Murray State University is a prime technolo-gy center and the town’s industry and agri-culture are always moving forward. Its histo-ry tells the story of its future.

Calloway County was originally formed in1822 and it included the area that is nowMarshall County. The state legislature divid-ed the area into two separate counties in 1842.The county seat had been in Wadesboro, buta new location was needed after the separa-tion. The site that was selected lay at the geo-graphic center of the county, a village namedMurray.

Murray was formed on an 80-acre plot andwas subdivided into 137 business and resi-dential lots with eight streets total in the vil-lage. The town began as a post office andtrading center in the 1820s. At that time it wascalled Williston in honor of James Willis, anearly settler. Later the name was changed toPooltown after local merchant Robert Pool. The name was changed yet again to PleasantSprings before its incorporation on January17, 1844, when the present name was adopt-ed to honor U.S. Congressman John L.Murray.

During the Civil War Murray and CallowayCounty were officially declared neutral. However it was a center for intenseConfederate feelings. There were not manylarge conflicts that took place in the town ofMurray, but the citizens did see some guerril-la warfare. In January of 1862, Union forcesunder Gen. Lew Wallace (later known as theauthor of Ben Hur) traveled through Murrayand advanced on Fort Heiman in an assaultthat eventually led to the fall of Forts Henryand Donelson. It was from this victory thatCommanding General Ulysses S. Grant

launched his campaigns that led to Shiloh, the fall ofMemphis and Vicksburg, and his eventual promo-tion to commander ofUnion forces in the east.

In the spring of 1862 thegeneral of the Unionforces stationed inPaducah, Kentucky made his way to the TennesseeRiver, taking whatever property he wanted from theMurray townspeople. A diary by Josh Ellison statesthat in the winter of 1864 a squad of soldiers fromPaducah burned the east side of the court square onFriday night, and they burned the north side of thecourt square on Monday.

As many as 500 men joined the Confederate ranks, with approximately 200 joining the Union. A monu-ment on the northeast side of the court square standsto this day, honoring the Confederate veterans. Themonument, a gift from the United Daughters of the

Confederacy, is the only Confederate monument inthe south that does notface squarely north.

In the early 1870s thepopulation of Murraywas almost 800. It was athriving and bustlingbusiness center boasting

six retail stores, stream flour and sawmills, wagonand carriage factory, tanyard, twelve mechanicalshops, two tobacco factories, two hotels, two church-es, and a newspaper, The Murray Gazette. The MurrayInstitute offered a fine education to both men andwomen. Education, it seems was always important tothe citizens of Murray.

Murray was home to Nathan B. Stubblefield, aneccentric inventor who, at one time, was credited bymany with the invention of the telephone in the late1890s. In fact, he never claimed anything more than tohave invented “wireless telephony.” However, today

the field induction technology he pioneered has comeinto common use as a means of recharging batterieswithout using an actually plug. (see “FamousMurrayans,” P. 24)

The city continued to prosper as an agricultural center, but its distance from a large, navigable river limited itspotential for heavy industry. The railroad providedaccess for manufacturing, but was more important forcarrying the tons of tomatoes, corn, wheat and tobacco.

Then, just after the FirstWorld War, the KentuckyLegislature announcedplans to strengthen publiceducation in the westernpart of the Commonwealthby creating a new teachers’college or “NormalSchool.” Several cities sub-mitted proposals in anattempt to be designated asthe site of the school.Murray, led by skilledpolitician and businessmanRainey T. Wells, not onlysubmitted a proposal, butbacked it up with deeds tolands for the campus, alarge brick house to serveas the president’s home,

and more than $117,000 in donations to support theinitial construction. All the money was raised bylocal businesses and individuals, and proved to thelegislative committee that the school would have

strong local support. In 1922, constructionbegan on what is now Wrather Hall, the firstbuilding for Murray State Normal School.

Murray residents consider the University tobe a natural part of the community. As manyas 10,000 students on the main campus andseveral satellite campuses throughout westernKentucky pursue an education which hasbeen ranked as one of the best among publiccolleges and universities in America.

Today, Murray is one of the country’s finestsmall towns. It has received several communi-ty awards including “Playful City USA” forthe last two years, and “100 Best Communitiesfor Young People” three years running. It isconsistently named one of the best places toretire. With more than 16,000 residents, a lowcrime rate, favorable cost of living, solid andaffordable housing opportunities, great

schools and access to some of the best recreational andleisure features in the country, Murray has justifiedthe faith of its founders and made a place in Americanhistory.

The World's Biggest Fish Fry Less than an hour to the south is Paris, Tennessee. Forover fifty years Paris has held their annual Fish Fryfestival, now the largest in the world. With over fivetons of fish fried up in the modern event, the festivallasts for a full week and now includes a carnival, arodeo, beauty pageants, parades, arts and crafts, and,of course, plenty of catfish and hushpuppies.

The Fish Fry evolved from "Mule Day," which originat-ed in 1938. Farmers came to town on the first Mondayin April to trade their mules and other farm products,do their shopping, and enjoy the fellowship of theirfriends. Early in the 1950's, the Chamber of Commercetook over Mule Day and started looking for anotherevent to replace it as tractors took the place of mules.

In 1953, they held the first Fish Fry. In 1961, the eventwas starting to grow too large for the Chamber to han-dle so the Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) tookover the event. They adopted the name of "World's

Biggest Fish Fry" and today it's a community eventthat truly lives up to its name.

The Wickliffe Mounds West of Murray, about an hour and a half away, is theWickliffe Mounds State Historic Site. Listed on theNational Register of Historic Places, it is a designatedKentucky Archaeological Landmark and is a commonground for Native American Indian cultures, past andpresent. Wickliffe Mounds is the archaeological site of aprehistoric Native American village of the Mississippianmound builders.

Located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi river, the village was occupied from about 1100 to 1350 AD.The Mississippians built a complex settlement withpermanent houses and earthen mounds situatedaround a central plaza. They also buried their deadhere with dignity and respect. After the 1300s theMississippians at Wickliffe Mounds abandoned thevillage. Today Murray State University uses the sitefor training students and research.

The museum consists of excavated mounds witharchaeological features, Mississippian burial practices, displays of artifacts from the site and a mural of aMississippian village. The Ceremonial Mound isintact and can be accessed for a beautiful bird’s eyeview of the park. Mammoth Cave National Park

A longer daytrip to the east, about three and a halfhours, brings you to Mammoth Cave, the longest cavesystem in the world. With a confirmed 365 miles ofpassageways Mammoth Cave is so long that if the sec-ond and third longest caves in the world were joinedtogether, it would still be the planet's longest cave andhave nearly 100 miles left over. Mammoth CaveNational Park preserves the cave system and a part ofthe Green River region of south central Kentucky.

The Park offers visitors several cave tours. Many of themost famous features of the cave, such as GrandAvenue, Frozen Niagara, and Fat Man's Misery, can beseen on lighted tours ranging from one to six hours inlength. Two tours, lit only by visitor-carried paraffinlamps, are popular alternatives to the electric-lit routes.Several "wild" tours venture away from the developedparts of the cave into muddy crawls and dusty tunnels.

Mammoth Cave National Park also has three devel-oped campgrounds and more than a dozen primitivecamping sites in the backcountry and along the Greenand Nolin Rivers. The rivers trace through the parkand offer a wealth of recreational opportunities. Takea canoe out looking for wildlife, springs and riverbluffs, or fish for bluegill, catfish, bass, and othergame fish. There are more than 70 miles of backcoun-try trails through forested Kentucky hills for hikers, horseback riders, and bicyclists.

That is only a taste of the region’s attractions, andMurray is right in the middle of it all. Additionally, thereare several major cities within easy driving distance, sotown residents are never far away from major concertsor events. It’s a small town with access to whatever youneed without the drawbacks of big city life.

That quotation, often attributed to Mark Twain,is also often used to describe Kentucky weath-er. Well, Twain was talking about weather inNew England – not Kentucky. If he had spent

much time here, he would have learned that, as fickleas weather may be, Kentucky weather is pretty stableand, for most of the year, very predictable.

Murray is fortunate enough to enjoy four distinct sea-sons. The summers are ideal for enjoying outdoor activ-ities such as golf or boating on nearby Kentucky Lake, and the autumn colors are breathtaking to behold.Murray usually does not experience extreme weatherconditions such as severe heat or blizzards althoughMurray was recently the victim of a pretty severe icestorm. Still, the fact that it made national news tells youhow uncommon it is, and sleds, snowmobiles and skisusually get pretty dusty before they’re used.

Officially, the climate is considered “humid subtropi-cal.” Summer time in west Kentucky is usually humidwith temperatures averaging 85 to 90°F. The summerheat usually peaks in late July, with very few, if any,100°F+ days. A rare heat wave in 2007 broke severalrecord highs for two weeks in the month of August.

Snow is not rare in west Kentucky, but the area proba-bly receives less than any other part of the state. Snowusually falls between the first of December and aboutthe first of March. Most snowstorms do not produceanymore than two or three inches of snow, but occa-

sional storms can dump six inches or more. One atypi-cal storm did happen in the winter of 2002-03 whenMurray received 24" of snow, about three times thenorm.

Murray gets about 53 inches of rain per year (US aver-age is 37). There are around 107 days with any measur-able precipitation. Of course, that means that there aremore than 250 days with no rain, snow, sleet or hail. That figure makes Murray a popular golf destination, even in winter.

So, if you don’t like the weather, you must be livingsomewhere else!

Takin’ Care of Business

Murray is a thriving community with out-standing existing industry, includingBriggs &S t r a t t o n ,

Pella Windows, KenlakeFoods, and more. Thecity’s assets include lowcrime, affordable hous-ing, excellent publicschool systems and cut-ting edge telecommunication services. Taken togeth-er, those qualities make the area one of the best loca-tions for leading companies searching for that “justright” fit.

Murray has weathered the current economic stormwith strength and has one of the lowest unemploy-

ment rates in the coun-try. Several factors com-bine to help bufferMurray against the eco-nomic plight that has hitthe rest of the country. Infact, says Mark Manningof the Economic

Development Corporation (EDC), only Lexingtonhas a lower unemployment rate in Kentucky.

Mark Manning and the EDC try to ensure the econom-ic security of the region. With a newly-completedindustrial park north of the city, Murray is once againconfigured for growth. “If someone is going to movehere, they need a place or a building. We were out ofresources,” said Mark, “until the new park was fin-ished. We’re ready now.”

Murray State University is a major contributor to thearea’s economic strength. The state funded facilityprovides a strong buffer for the local economy. One ofthe largest employers in the entire region, MSU alsoprovides a highly educated workforce to the area. TheMurray-Calloway County Hospital also presents apowerful economic force for the city.

“The City, the County, Murray State, the Chamber andthe medical community – they all work together to

make Murray and Calloway County more attractiveto prospective business and industry,” says MarkManning. “I have never been let down when it comesto getting support for a new industry; we all pulltogether, and it’s impressive.”

Perhaps Murray’s greatest defense against the eco-nomic woes of the rest of the country is the city’s greatdiversity. No single entity or industry dominates theeconomy. In addition to the University and the hospi-tal, there are multiple manufacturing facilities creatingsuch varied commodities as lawnmowers, windows, chemicals and scoreboards. The retail sector is strongand varied with smaller, locally grown businesses aswell as national chains. With Calloway County’s ori-gins firmly rooted in farming, agriculture continues tobe a dominant part of the economic culture. Murrayhas its own micro-economy.

The news isn’t simply about survival, though.Murray is always looking at growth. Six of the city’smost important industries have been here since theyear 1999. The area’s population has increased dra-matically along with university enrollment. As thecountry recovers, Murray is in a good position to

move forward and grow. “We’re in good shape,”Mark Manning cautions, “When the national econo-my begins to recover, Murray will be in excellentshape to compete for new projects.” He believes thatMurray’s industry will make even stronger contri-butions to the community and foster growth foreveryone.

Murray has much to offer potential business andindustry. The quality of life and cost of living areboth excellent in this rural town. Factor in the educated local workforce, lower taxes, centralizedgeographic location and transportation access andyou can see why Murray is a fertile setting for devel-opment.

In Murray, it’s time to grow.

Located just six miles northwest of downtownMurray is one of the area’s best kept secrets.Kyle-Oakley Field is Murray’s municipal air-port and it is one of the city’s great treasures.

The airport is there for the community though manycitizens have not been out to see it. The business com-munity knows all about it, however. Several business-es have credited the airport with being a major influ-ence in setting up shop in Murray. A number of localbusinesses have planes hangared at Kyle-Oakley Fieldon a full time basis.

In 1957 the Murray Jaycees undertook the project tocreate an airport to promote growth and progress forthe local community. The airport was approved forconstruction and Governor Bert T. Combs dedicatedthe Airport in an opening ceremony in 1961.

The airport has grown continually for the last fiftyyears. The original airstrip was 3,000 feet, but today, after several expansions, the airstrip is 6,200 feet, long enough to welcome various medium sized air-craft. The terminal building was expanded threeyears ago. The building has a spacious meeting roomfor pilots and clients to use along with a pilot’slounge. Ten new T-hangars were added in 2008,bringing the airport’s total to 48, and there’s still awaiting list, which shows just how popular the facil-ity is for local pilots and businesses. This year the air-port installed a new automated weather observationsystem, or AWOS.

Numerous services are available at Kyle-Oakley Field. The fueling facility lets pilots buy 100LL, Jet-A, andeven auto fuel, a rarity for general aviation (GA) air-ports. Cardinal Aviation provides flight instruction, maintenance and even rentals. Tours are provided forschool groups and Leadership Murray. You can evenuse the Otis G. Erwin Airstrip for remote control flying.

Perhaps the field’s greatest asset is pilot and airportmanager Johnny Parker. He’s been in charge since1974 and the airport wouldn’t be the gem it is todaywithout him. Johnny takes a tremendous amount ofpride in the airport and it truly shows. The spotless

terminal building is a warm welcomecenter to pilots and passengers from allacross the country. “It is an economicdevelopment tool second to none and amodel for the entire GA community,”Parker says of the airport. “You’ve gotsomebody who’s never been to Murraycoming in through here, and you want tomake sure you make that good firstimpression.” The airport does indeedmake a great first impression. Peopleanticipating the typical dingy, small air-ports are blown away by the exceptionalquality of Kyle-Oakley Field.

Two new report rooms will be available in thenew building for people to come in and file reportsand the coroner’s office will relocate from the court-house. While the location is new to the Sheriff’s Office, it hasbeen a part of Murray’s public services for years. Thebuilding was constructed in 1952 and originallyhoused the Calloway County Health Department. Thesite became available when the health departmentreceived a grant to build a new facility in the southpart of town. The economies of Murray and CallowayCounty are clearly moving boldly into thefuture. However, they take great pride in theiragricultural roots. Look beyond the modern

University and the technology start-ups and you’ll seethe heart of an agricultural community. Today modernfarms blaze new trails in farming technology along-side organic farms dedicated to preserving the tradi-tions of their fathers and grandfathers who built thisregion. Murray agriculture has that attractive blend oftradition and innovation that is so important to anyindustry.

Calloway County has been a productive environmentfor agriculture ever since it was founded in 1822. Thesoils were particularly fertile and well adapted to thegrowth of Gold Leaf Tobacco, a high demand crop. Atone time, there were as many as 15 tobacco factorieshere. While you can still find some tobacco grownhere, the agricultural index has broadened significant-ly to include a wide variety of crops like corn, soy-beans, berries, and myriad vegetables.

Pay a visit to Hillyard Field Organics and you’ll dis-cover an incredible array of organically grown fruitsand vegetables ready to fill your kitchen with the bestflavors that nature can provide. This family owned, certified organic farm offers Farmers Market users, local restaurants and fine dining restaurants organicproduce starting in May and continuing through the

fall. Each season, owners Brad and Karly Lowe sownew seeds the old way. Mule drawn equipmentreplaces the tractor when applicable during the grow-ing season for cultivation. Cover crops, large-scalecomposting, beneficial interplanting and insects pro-vide organic protection throughout the growing sea-son for their three acre farm. Thirteen bee hives offercustomers local honey throughout the season and nec-essary pollination.

Even as Hillyard Field honors the past with theirmethods, TapLogic is swiftly moving ahead withtheirs. TapLogic is a local agricultural technologycompany that created a system called FarmLogic thatis changing the way agricultural businesses operate.FarmLogic is a web-based software/hardware systemthat provides mobile data collection and storage forfarmers, farm managers and agriculture serviceproviders. It’s a comprehensive tool for tracking cropsfrom seed to sale. FarmLogic allows farmers and sup-

TapLogic is the creation of lifelong farmer and entre-preneur Hoyt Choate. Hoyt and his wife, Renee, moved to Murray 13 years ago looking for the rightplace to explore some of their innovative ideas foragriculture. Hoyt has business interests in Kentucky,Tennessee and Missouri, and Choate LandManagement manages 15,000 acres of MississippiValley farmland. He serves as President of four othercompanies, including AgForest Partners, Upstream,Streamside Resource Management and UndergroundCable, Inc.

When someone with Hoyt’s vastbusiness experience moves toMurray to create a start-up, it’sworth taking notice. This area pro-vides several benefits, including theadvantage of being a centralizedgeographic location.Representatives from TapLogic caneasily drive to trade shows in anydirection, from Texas to the north-east. For what is traditionallyviewed as a small community, ship-ping and transportation to any loca-tion in the country has never beenmore accessible, bringing the worldto our doors.

Murray State University has a high-ly rated agriculture department thatis producing some incredible andeager talent. Three of the five mem-bers of TapLogic’s executive boardare former Murray State students(the other two members are Hoytand Renee themselves). Graduatesfrom Murray State’s agriculture pro-gram take their knowledge all overthe country, but a number also stayin the region and work on the farmsthat have been in their family forgenerations.

Here the roots of agriculture rundeep and strong. For business, industry, education and the qualityof life, those roots form a firm foun-dation.

We invite you to join the Chamber and theMurray-Calloway County community inremembering our friend, Tom Rushing, who was serving as Mayor when he was

suddenly taken from us in the autumn of 2009.Tommy was born in Murray in a day when kids couldbe kids, and he retained a spirit of youth to the lastday.

“My dad, who died while I was still quite young, wasinvolved in city government. I remember many thingshe told me, but one that stood out was, ‘If you evergrow up, you need to serve Murray—it’s a great placeto live.’”

That sentiment stuck with Tom Rushing throughouthis life. He graduated from Murray State University, where he played baseball and was a member of theSigma Chi Fraternity. He became an educator at theold Faxon School, working in the county for 10 years, nine of which he served as principal.

He later joined the ranks of the banking industry, andwas a well-known figure as a lending officer and anengaged member of the community. After 15 years asa city commissioner—many of them as the Mayor ProTem—he entered the race for Mayor. Without opposi-tion, he took office with widespread public support.

No community ever had a more dedicated or vocalsupporter than Tommy Rushing. As revered as he wasby friends, former students, voters and colleagues, henever took the credit for himself. “But, it’s not me,” hetold an interviewer in 2008. “We have a great group ofemployees, from the Manager to the StreetDepartment, utilities workers—those are the peoplewho do the job.”

In a lifetime of memories, one of his proudest waswhen he was announced as Citizen of the Year at the

2008 Chamber of Commerce dinner. The recipient ofthe Chamber’s Citizen of the Year Award is chosenthrough nominations from Chamber members. Oncenominations are received, the Citizens of the Yearfrom the past three years choose the recipient. MayorRushing received 99 percent of the nominations.

He would do anything for his beloved hometown, from racing County Judge-Executive Larry Elkinsdown 16th Street in a soapbox derby car, to wearing akilt at the West Kentucky Highland Games. The out-pouring of pride in his life was abundant during thedays and weeks following his passing. Kenny Darnellof Murray’s Rotary Club may have put it best: “TomRushing always said that Murray was the best placeyou could ever be. Well, there’s one place that’s better, and that’s where he is now.”

To Tom Rushing, our leader and our friend, this mag-azine is affectionately dedicated. We hope it will helpthe reader to understand why this community meantso much to Tommy, and why it might mean just asmuch to you.
