TRANSCRIPT
The Murray Edwards Music Society seeks to support all college musicians, undergraduates, postgraduates and
Fellows, and give everyone an opportunity to participate in college musical life. All musical styles and
standards are welcome. Performances in College range from concerts in the Dome and the FDR, to relaxed

Murray Edwards College Music Society
The Committee
The Murray Edwards Music Society Committee works with the
College's Director of Music (Dr Chloe Valenti) to put on
concerts each term and also organise workshops,
masterclasses, performances and film screenings throughout
the year. Anyone is welcome to perform or put on their own
concert at any time – simply contact the society president and
we will help with the organisation.
The Director of Music and the Music Society Committee
publicise the events, book venues, buy or organise
refreshments for the interval, make the programmes, set up
the room and generally oversee the concert on the day.
New members are always welcome! The Committee has
breakfast meetings each term (with crumpets, croissants and
coffee!) to discuss how the Music Society can improve and
promote music in the College.
If you would like to be added to the Music Society mailing list,
or are interested in taking an active part in college music,
whether as a performer or organiser, please contact the
Music Society President Joey Skinner on

Murray Edwards Choir
The student-run Murray Edwards Choir rehearses every Monday in term time at
5pm in the FDR. Open to music of any style, including classical, folk and a cappella,
this friendly and inclusive group welcomes singers of all levels who can read music.
As well as performing in concerts each term, the choir sing carols in the Dome at
the Christmas Superformals, songs by Robert Burns at the Burns Night Dinner and
regularly take part in events in college and more widely in the university. A recent
highlight was ‘Women in Song’, a staged extravaganza to mark the College’s 60th
Anniversary. For more information, contact Freya Pentz on [email protected]
Orchestra on the Hill
The Orchestra on the Hill (OOTH) is an orchestra made up of players from the ‘hill
colleges’ including Murray Edwards. Their typical repertoire ranges from classical
symphonies to film music and new commissions. In Michaelmas Term they perform
at Churchill College, in Lent Term they perform in the Dome at Murray Edwards
College and in Easter Term they perform at Fitzwilliam College. The standard is
about Grade 8 and new members are always welcome. We are particularly keen to
recruit strings and brass! A very friendly group with lots of socials, this is a great
way to meet musicians in other colleges. See http://www.orchestraonthehill.co.uk/
for more details.
World Music, folk, jazz, chamber groups and bands
Whether you’re a singer/songwriter, play in a band, play an exotic instrument or
folk/pop/rock, want to join a chamber group or start your own – the Music Society
wants to hear from you! We want our college musical life to be as varied and
inclusive as possible, so do let us know your interests by emailing the Music Society
Intercollegiate Music
As well as our own in-house musical events, Murray Edwards has strong musical links
with our neighbouring colleges of Churchill and Fitzwilliam. Opportunities to perform
and socialise include joint orchestral concerts with the Orchestra on the Hill, joint
choir performances as well as formal dinners and friendly socials. If you are looking
for a Chapel Choir, Fitzwilliam and Churchill choirs welcome new members. For
Fitzwilliam choir, contact Katharine Parton ([email protected]) and for Churchill
choir, contact Mark Gotham ([email protected]).

Music Practice Facilities in College
The Coach House, a recently-renovated building located between the Kaetsu Centre and the Tennis Courts, is an ideal
space for music practice. Two rooms on the ground floor have pianos: a Bechstein Grand and a Reid-Sohn Upright. The
main door has a punch lock and students can ask the Porters for the access code.
The Music Room is located through the external double doors behind the Porter’s Lodge and contains a Danemann
Upright Piano and a Kawai Electric Upright Piano. Students can ask the Porters for the key. This room is also used as a
supervision room and for mock exams, so it may not be available at all times. Advance booking is recommended via the
Events and Catering Office at [email protected].
Music Scholarships and Awards
The College offers 4-5 Choral Awards of £100 each for undergraduates and postgraduates committed to singing in
chapel choirs in Cambridge. These awards are intended to offer Murray Edwards students participating in chapel choirs
in other colleges the same level of support offered by colleges with a chapel choir tradition. There is no audition and
singers of all levels of experience are encouraged to apply. Look out for the application deadline in Lent Term.
The annual Murray Edwards College Music Scholarship Competition takes place in Lent Term. It is open to all
undergraduates and postgraduates and all instruments and styles of music are very welcome. Two scholarships of £400
each will be awarded, to be spent on instrumental/vocal tuition. The applicants will be judged on a short recital
performance and their proposed contribution to college music. Look out for the Application form, available in
Michaelmas Term
Students can also apply for the University Instrumental Award Scheme (these can be renewed annually). Applications
must be in before starting in Freshers’ Week, for more information see:
http://www.study.cam.ac.uk/undergraduate/apply/musicawards/instrumental.html
Keep an eye on the Music Society noticeboard outside the Bar for information on further opportunities.
Calling all Grade 8 pianists!
Are you a pianist of Grade 8 or above (or equivalent)? If so, you may use the Steinway Grand Piano in the FDR. Contact
the Director of Music, Dr Chloe Valenti, on [email protected] to be added to the Steinway list in the Porter’s Lodge.
Once you are on the list, you can ask the Porters for the keys. The FDR is primarily a Fellows’ room so you will need to
vacate the room should a Fellow need to use it, but at other times you are welcome to practice there. If you wish to
book a time in advance, you can do so by contacting Dr Chloe Valenti on [email protected]. While first priority will be
given to pianists wishing to use the Steinway, performers of other instruments of Grade 8 standard or above (or
equivalent) who wish to use the FDR as a practice space may also ask to be added to the list.
