The papers of Thomas Jefferson Murray (1894-1971), Democratic United States Representativefrom Jackson, Tennessee, consist of approximately 15,000 items in 41 boxes. This collection spansthe years 1944-1966, with a few letters dating back to 1936. There are no restrictions on the collection and single copies of documents can be made forscholarly research and use.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

MURRAY, THOMAS JEFFERSON, 1894-1971 REPRESENTATIVE, EIGHTH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT, 1942-1966

Thomas Jefferson Murray, was born in Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee, August 1, 1894. Agraduate of Jackson City Schools, he received his B.A. Degree from Union University, and his lawdegree from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. Prior to his service in the Infantry with theAmerican Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I, he taught two years in the JacksonCity School System. After the war, Murray entered law practice in Jackson, Tennessee. He was elected DistrictAttorney for the Twelfth District Circuit of Tennessee in 1922, and served until September of 1933,when he resigned to accept the a position with the U.S. Solicitor's Office in the Post OfficeDepartment in Washington, D.C. Mr. Murray was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1928, 1932 and 1936. Healso served as Chairman of the Madison County Executive Committee and was a member of theState Democratic Executive Committee. Along with this work in the Democratic Party, Murray served as First Commander of the John A.Deaver Post No. 12, American Legion and as the American Legion State Vice-Commander. He wasalso a member of the Coco-Danuiels Post No. 1848, of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the SigmaAlpha Epsilon College Fraternity. In 1942, Mr. Murray ran on the Democratic ticket and was elected to the House ofRepresentatives in the Seventy-Eighth Congress, and served through the Eighty-Ninth Congress. Whilein office, Congressman Murray served as Chairman of the House Post Office and Civil ServiceCommittee. This committee had jurisdiction over Federal Civil Service, including all legislationconcerning classified employees, the Postal Service, Bureau of the Census and the National Archives.He was also active in fighting against "Socialized Medicine", the Brannan Farm Plan, and the CivilRights Program.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The papers of Thomas Jefferson Murray (1894-1971), Democratic United States Representativefrom Jackson, Tennessee, consist of approximately 15,000 items. This collection spans the years1944-1966, with a few letters dating back to 1936. The majority of the collection consists of correspondence, which includes Personal, political andlegislative issues. In his capacity as a U.S. Congressman the collection also includes many invitations,birthday and Christmas cards, and thank you notes. Of particular interest is a letter from J. EdgarHoover expressing his regret at Mr. Murray's loss to Ray Blanton in the 1966 election. Representative Murray was very active in Veterans Affairs especially claims and benefits. Inaddition, Murray was a member of the House Post Office and Post Roads Committee. Since thecommittee was responsible for Post Office legislation and legislation concerning the Civil ServiceSystem, much information was collected on pay increases for classified federal employees andemployee benefits.
