We salute Settlement Music School and its long-time supporter and champion, Leonard Mellman
PMA is different—for 35 years its guiding investment principle has been the management of risk in its clients’ portfolios. No one knows the future, and no one can forecast market performance, but nothing produces consistent returns like the rigorous quantitative analysis and thoughtful pragmatism that is at the core of PMA’s investment process. Founded in 1982 by Marshall E. Blume, Ph.D. of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Edward L. Snitzer, Esq., PMA manages about one billion dollars in client assets, including those of high net worth individuals and not-for-profit corporations.

Settlement Music School 110th Anniversary Gala
Welcome to Settlement Music School’s 110th Anniversary Gala!
We present to you this evening a celebration of Settlement alumni and recognize the ways Settlement shaped the lives of three esteemed alumni who each Play It Forward: Leonard Mellman, Kevin Eubanks and Harriet Go. Each honoree reflects a unique time in our history, from the 30s, 60s, and 90s (we hope you enjoy the cocktails and décor at the cocktail hour!). Every Settlement alumnus has a unique story to tell, so tonight is only snapshot of the 11 decades that our School has served Philadelphia and the region.
Settlement is so much more than a traditional arts education - it touches some of our most special lives via the Kardon Cen-ter for Arts Therapy and Kaleidoscope Arts Integrated Pre-K programs. More than 300,000 students have studied here since 1908. Under CEO Helen Eaton, Settlement has branched out to connect the arts community in Philadelphia through their work with Philadelphia Music Alliance for Youth Artists’ (PMAY) Initiative.
Settlement provides financial aid and scholarship assistance of $2 million annually. Your generosity tonight assures that many more generations can share in the legacy of music and arts.
Thank you for being a part of this event, which will Play it Forward for future students while continuing the commitment to those we serve today. Along with the 110th Gala Committee and the staff of Settlement, we extend our sincerest gratitude and wishes for a very enjoyable evening!
Warmest regards,

Founded in 1908, Settlement Music School began as the music program of the College Settlement in Philadelphia’s Southwark section offering services to newly arrived immigrants in the community.
The music program grew rapidly from volunteers offering piano lessons for a nickel to a full program of instruction in all musical instruments taught by professionals, including several members of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
By 1914, Settlement was incorporated as an independent community school of the arts. The current Mary Louise Curtis Branch building was built in 1917.
In the 1940s and ‘50s, Settlement experimented with remote satellite and branch locations, and by 1960 had established the Germantown and Northeast (later the Kardon-Northeast) branches.
In the 1970s, Settlement undertook an ambitious program of education and therapy in music and dance for disabled children and adults, and in the mid-1980s incorporated the Kardon Institute as a separate, allied institution. Kardon later spun off into an independent organization, and upon the Institute’s closing in 2014, Settlement launched its Kardon Center for Arts Therapy.
In the late 1980s Settlement merged with the Jenkintown Music School to create a fourth branch (which moved to a brand new facility in 2011 to become the Willow Grove Branch) and founded a fifth branch in the Wynnefield neighborhood of West Philadelphia.
In 2002, Settlement extended its services to students in Camden, New Jersey.

Len mellman harriet go
len mellmanThe Mellman family of Feltonville thrived on music and theater: mom, Luba Molnar, was a well-known cabaret singer in Philadelphia, and in 1939, 15-year-old Leonard realized he was an actor at heart, spending Friday evenings in Settle-ment’s drama program, under the direction of Gertrude McBurney.
There, he “found magic.”
Leonard’s dream of acting was put on hold while he served in World War II. When he returned to the United States, he decided not to continue theater, but rather enroll at Temple University, where he earned a degree in English from the College of Liberal Arts (CLA ’49). Leonard’s younger siblings would follow in his footsteps and begin studying at Settlement, including baby sister Leah, who would, at a very young age, become recognized as a piano prodigy and ultimately graduate from the Curtis Institute of Music. Leonard was on his way to graduate school at Columbia University when his father passed away suddenly, leaving Leonard to take on much more family responsibility. Having put graduate school on the back burner, Leonard took over managing the family business before he took a chance on real estate.
It was at the age of 32 that Leonard made his first property purchase, in what is now called the Fitler Square neighbor-hood. Leonard never expected to have a career in real estate development and management, but his entrepreneurship soon became an integral part of the revitalization of Center City Philadelphia’s neighborhoods.
“Life leads you down paths you never expected to go,” Len says.
Leonard became a member of the Mary Louise Curtis Branch Board in 1976 and remains an active emeritus member of the Central Board of Trustees.

kevin eubanksTo say music runs in the Eubanks family is an understatement –
Mom, Vera, is a gospel and clas-sical pianist and organist with a Master’s Degree in music educa-tion; Vera’s brother, Ray, was a journeyman jazz pianist who re-corded and toured with a number of jazz greats and had hit records
of his own. Vera’s sons followed in the family business: they all studied at Settlement Music School, where Vera eventually served on the Board. Today, Robin is a trombonist and tenured professor at Oberlin College, and Duane has a flourishing ca-reer as a trumpet player and recording artist. It was the violin that first captured Kevin’s interest, and he began studying at Settlement at seven years old.
Kevin’s dream of being the first violinist playing 3rd base for the Philadelphia Phillies soon changed; he moved on to trum-pet before committing to the guitar, which was solidified with his entrance to Berklee College of Music. It was after Berklee, when Kevin moved to New York, that his music career took off.Kevin has played with some of the greatest jazz musicians – Art Blakey, Slide Hampton, McCoy Tyner, to name just a few – and soon became the leader of his own group . In 1992, Kevin moved to the West Coast to join The Tonight Show Band, and in 1995, Kevin became the band’s leader. Assuming the role as Jay Leno’s sidekick, Kevin participated in skits, and his en-gaging personality and musicianship drew attention that led to greater opportunities for playing, composing, and playing it forward with volunteerism and education. Kevin stepped down from The Tonight Show in 2010.
Kevin released his 23rd album, East West Time Line, in 2017, which quickly reached #1 on the Jazz Week Radio Chart. A strong advocate for music education, Kevin has worked with organizations all around the world, including The Thelonious Monk Institute, Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp, Banff School of Fine Arts, Rutgers University and the Charlie Parker School.
harriet goBorn in the Philippines, Harriet Go and her family emigrated to the Unit-ed States in 1982, when Harriet was just six weeks old. Born with congeni-tal glaucoma, her family was advised to seek treatment for her at the Chil-dren’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Harriet grew up in East Falls and at-tended St. Lucy’s Day School for Children with Visual Impair-ments. In 7th grade, her music teacher told her she had a “gift for music” and suggested to Harriet’s parents that she enroll at Settlement Music School. With the help of financial aid and scholarship awards, Harriet and her siblings studied at both the Germantown and Mary Louise Curtis branches. With master piano teachers Lois Di-Domenico and Anne Marie Bedford, Harriet thrived in her lessons.
The experience, she says, taught her perseverance, dedication and responsibility. Harriet graduated from Central High School and holds a Bach-elor’s from Temple University and a Master of Education from Walden University. She teaches reading and math to students who have learning disabilities in K through 3rd grade at Rich-mond Elementary School. Harriet appreciates and respects her role in the lives of her students today, saying she is grateful “to be able to work with young minds and help shape students to become the best whole person they can be.” Crediting both her teachers throughout her elementary and high school years, and Settlement faculty as positive role models and mentors, Harriet says they helped influence her to play it forward and become a teacher herself. While Harriet no longer studies the piano, today she studies violin, a notoriously difficult instrument to learn. Harriet is president of the Keystone chapter of the National Federa-tion of the Blind of Pennsylvania (NFBP) where she teaches a two-week Braille literacy summer program for blind youth. Additionally, Harriet volunteers at her local church, leading and organizing arts and crafts workshops throughout the year.
