VISION STATEMENT Throughout history, people have felt the need to communicate with those around them. One form of this communication has been through using the arts, particularly music, as a mode of self‐expression. Music is an important key to understanding one’s cultural history, as well as the history of other cultures. Music enables students to gain a greater awareness of their uniqueness, by drawing upon their own varied backgrounds and ethnic origins. Music offers lifelong opportunities for the development of imagination, sensitivity, inventiveness, risk‐taking, and enjoyment. Through the study of music, students will gain an understanding for the aesthetic qualities of the arts, and an appreciation of the peoples of the world. According to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, the arts are “an essential part of the academic curriculum for the achievement of human, social, and economic growth”. The study and performance of music enhances self‐esteem, builds self‐discipline, develops organizational skills, and reinforces social skills, such as cooperation, commitment, and working towards a common goal. Additionally, the study of music provides an opportunity for interdisciplinary connections to a wide assortment of core content areas, which includes World Languages, Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Technology, as well as 21st Century Life and Careers. It is our vision that the General Music Curriculum will offer the students of Berkeley Heights a well‐rounded musical experience. The students will develop fundamental skills in notation and composition, by creating and performing music. The students will experience the mechanics of music‐making through solo and group singing, instrument playing, movement, creating and improvising, and Eurhythmics. By listening to and responding to music, students will develop an appreciation for music history and culture, through the study of composers and stylistic periods. This curriculum seeks to provide the opportunity for students to become lifelong appreciators of music, in all its forms.


MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Berkeley Heights General Music K‐8 Program is to ensure that our students gain an appreciation, understanding, and hands‐on experience of the fundamentals of music and how music impacts our daily lives. This mission is accomplished through: An understanding of communication through music The development of affective qualities, such as imagination, sensitivity, inventiveness,

risk‐taking, and enjoyment Developing an understanding of the aesthetic qualities of the arts The development of self‐esteem and self‐discipline The development of organizational skills The development of social skills, such as cooperation, commitment, and working

towards a common goal The integration of music with other disciplines Guided listening and responding to music The study of music notation, music history, performance, and composition Helping students become lifelong appreciators of music in all of its forms The study of composers, stylistic periods, and musical cultures Experience with the mechanics of music‐making through solo and group singing,

instrument playing, movement, creating and improvising, and Eurhythmics Delivery of program: Grades K ‐ 30 minutes once a week Grades 1‐5 ‐ 45 minutes once a week Grades 6‐8 ‐ 45 minutes five days a week for six week cycle

STUDENT PROFICIENCIES The student will be able to: 1. Develop skills as a discriminating listener. 2. Perform music through singing and/or playing an instrument. 3. Understand how music impacts all aspects of life. 4. Use music as a means of self‐expression. 5. Understand musical concepts through involvement, inquiry, and active participation. 6. METHODS OF EVALUATION Students will be evaluated in a number of ways: 1. Completion of projects/assignments. 2. Class participation. 3. Teacher developed tests. 4. Daily class performance. 5. Quality of work. 6. Teacher observation. 7. Appropriate use of equipment. Other factors considered will include: 1. Attention/involvement in instruction. 2. Quality of work/projects submitted. 3. Completion of assignments within established time frames. 4. Ability to work with others. 5. Initiative and responsibility. 6. Accomplishment of long‐range expectations.
