Welcome to the Music ProgrammeIt gives me great pleasure to welcome you back to the second half of our current concert season. As you will have come to expect of us by now, our musical offerings will be typically broad and diverse.

We have the return of our ‘regulars’: the Adelphi Brass Band; the University of Salford’s Big Band, Brass and Wind Bands, our choir and Adelphi Contemporary Music Group. Our ‘Voices’ and ‘Mix’ events will continue to showcase our excellent talent from popular music genres and the ‘Jazz 645’ series returns which will include the annual staff band performance.

Our Salford Sonic Fusion Festival will take place in March featuring cutting edge contemporary music from many corners of the world including: Italy, Canada, Serbia, Lithuania, USA, Argentina, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Brazil, Russia, Australia, France, Poland, Greece, Austria and Georgia. This year it will feature more performing artists and will attempt more directly to fuse areas of contemporary avant-garde music traditions with that from the fringes of experimental electronic dance and improvised music. The University of Salford’s new School of Arts & Media has its first end of year Show in June. This is now evolving into an exciting festival of arts encompassing many disciplines across the new School. Hosted at a variety of interesting venues at Salford Quays during Friday 12 to Sunday 16 June, the work of our Music students will feature strongly alongside their many creative colleagues.

Jan and Steve perform their original score live to the film ‘Berlin: Symphony of a Great City’, director Walter Ruttmann, 1927, Germany.

REFLEKTOR2 is a poignant dawn to dusk portrait of 1920s Berlin, combining documentary, abstract and lyrical imagery. With its masterly camerawork and assured editing, ‘Berlin’ was hugely successful on its release, and that rarity, a film both popular and avant-garde.

Making music to ‘Berlin’

‘Writing and performing to this seminal city film from a 21st century perspective is always hugely different than from a contemporary viewpoint. Following those celebratory mute, interwar testimonies, the terrifying weight of history upon that city not only brings poignancy and emotion to any musical thought, but adds a personal and human dimension.

For us ‘Berlin’ is more than a city film, beautifully created and framed though it is, it also demands intensity of feeling through performance as the kaleidoscopic imagery captures the moment, and lives of its people before the storms to come. How to respond to its vigour and its ultimate sadness at the same time is the challenge. We attempt to portray this by playing with intimacy and, at times, abandonment.’

Kopinski and Iliffe have a long musical partnership ranging from cult-like contemporary jazz groups, (PINSKI ZOO), to music to image (Mirrors) and silent film (‘Earth’, ‘Nosferatu’). Their composing and improvising skills, textural sense and interaction in performance bring real empathy to the silent film.

Spectral Immersions - Bass Clarinet MultiphonicsMasterclass and Workshop Friday 1 February, 2.00 – 3.00pm

Sarah Watts studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Angela Malsbury and Victoria Soames Samek. She then decided to specialise in the bass clarinet and studied at the Rotterdam Conservatorium with Henri Bok. At the end of her course in Rotterdam Sarah was awarded the Exxon prize for the best classical music student.

She has won numerous awards including: winning the UK Howarth Clarinet Competition 2000; Hawkes Clarinet Prize (RAM) 2001; Sir Arthur Bliss Chamber Music Prize (RAM) 2000; of wind section and Faber Prize, UK Performing Australian Music competition, 2001 (her clarinet and bass clarinet recital was broadcast on ABC radio); and finalist of Wind section, Royal Overseas League Competition 2000.

Performing on stage and in conservatoires and Universities in England, Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands Sarah has also attracted pieces from composers such as Marc Yeats, Ian Wilson, Kevin O Connell, Alicia Grant and Sungji Hong.

In January 2003, Sarah performed a solo bass clarinet recital in London’s Purcell Room as part of the Park Lane Group Young Artist Series.

She was also a founder member of the World Bass Clarinet Foundation and an organiser for the First World Bass Clarinet Convention in Holland in October 2005.

Currently in her final Ph.D year at Keele University Sarah is looking into and constructing new multiphonic charts for the bass clarinet. She is also a visiting tutor of solo bass clarinet at the Royal Northern College of Music and clarinet teacher at Nottingham University.

The Dave Hassell – Andy Scott Duo was formed in 1998 to explore, experiment and create new music for percussion and saxophone. The Duo has released two CDs: ‘Sand Dancer’, (2005) and, ‘Xilitla - Stairway to the Sky’, (2010), ‘Sand Dancer’, is an intimate reflection of both Dave and Andy’s musical experiences; Ranging from the free improvisations to original compositions such as ‘Otria’, ‘Sand Dancer’ and ‘The Light That Falls’, the duo display musical versatility, empathy and honesty. ‘Xilitla - Stairway to the Sky’, is a live improvised recording and the result of an innovative project, a personal and musical exploration of the surreal landscape and sculptures of Las Pozas in the Xilitla rainforest, with Mexican percussionist Evaristo Aguilar and photographer Richard Ellis.

In 2006, the Duo performed by invitation at the 33rd International Association of Jazz Educators Conference in New York City. The Duo undertook a tour later the same year in collaboration with actor Richard Ellis, presenting their take on Roger McGough’s classic poem ‘Summer with Monica’.

The masterclass will explore the above elements and how to employ them in improvisation and composition.

A night of live music from the Popular Music ensembles within the Music Directorate. One of the unique aspects of this evening is that it encompasses the diverse approach to Music studies within the University, featuring bands performing a whole variety of differing styles, including Rock, Pop, Metal, Funk, Soul, Blues and Indie.

Accordionist MasterclassFriday 8 February, 2.00 – 3.00pm

Djordje Gajic graduated from the Russian Academy of Music in 1993 gaining a Master of Music degree and Honorary Title, Solo Performer. Following the recommendation from the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music for post-graduate study he continued his studies there and was appointed Assistant to Professor Yuri Dranga.

Djordje has won many international competitions, amongst them Tropheo Mondiale CMA in 1988 and the Grand Prix, France in 1987. He has performed with Russian State Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Yevgeny Svetlanov, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Orchestra as well as many solo recitals throughout Europe: Russia, Serbia, Andorra, Holland, France, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Norway and Britain. Since arriving in Britain Djordje has given solo recitals in London, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Blackpool and Birmingham. He also performed at international music festivals in Dartington, Norwich, Salisbury and Birmingham.

Djordje is an accordion professor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and St Mary’s Music School, Edinburgh.

David Thornton is regarded as one of the foremost euphonium players and work as a soloist, conductor and educator is renowned throughout the brass playing world. He has held solo euphonium positions with the Fairey Band (1997-2000) and the Black Dyke Band (2000-2010) having won European, National and British Open Titles during this time. David is currently the solo euphonium player with the Brighouse and Rastrick Band.

He has earned many awards, including scholarships from the Countess of Munster Trust and the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe, a hatrick of solo awards at the National Euphonium Conference 1995, 1997 and 1999, first prize at the Verso Il Millenio International Euphonium Competition, but most notably as the International Euphonium Player of the Year 2001.

Furthermore, David features as a soloist on 22 different albums of band music, including ‘Epic Brass’ and ‘Jubilee Brass’ - live recordings of two concerts at the Royal Albert Hall.

Ben Clarke studied Music at the prestigious Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester University and the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM); where he gained the RNCM Keyboard Competence Prize and became an Associate of the Royal College of Music in Piano Performance. Ben has worked and performed regularly as a piano soloist and accompanist and as a freelance trumpet player.

Ben has accompanied some of the finest instrumentalists in the world, notably the euphonium players Steven Mead, Robert Childs, David Childs and David Thornton. He has given recitals at the Wigmore Hall and Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, and has performed at Kendal’s Contemporary Music Festival, the Windsor Festival and the International Tuba/Euphonium Conference. He has also performed on various occasions with the Northern Tuba Quartet.

This popular event showcases student jazz ensembles performing standards and original material covering a wide spectrum of styles. The programme will also feature the legendary jazz musician Munch Manship both as the director of the Adelphi Saxophone Quartet and soloist.

Conducted by final year elective students

The University of Salford Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Adelphi Brass Band combine to discover various aspects of their repertoire. The concert also incorporates our final year student conductors, who continue to develop their skills with the ensembles. As part of continuing our own traditions, we are extremely honoured that the programme will also include the presentation of the Roy Newsome Conducting Award by Muriel Newsome, to last year’s recipients, Simon Oliver and Matthew Whitfield.

University of Salford Big Band Directed by Tim France The University of Salford Big Band is delighted to be invited back to perform at this renowned big band enthusiasts club which attracts top bands from all over the North West. Tonight’s programme will display its strengths in a varied programme of traditional and original Big Band music taken from the 1940s to the present day. During the three sets, instrumental soloists will be featured along with the bands current vocalists.

University of Salford Brass Band Conducted by Dr Howard Evans

For over ten years now, University of Salford student composers have had the unique opportunity to have their music played and published through this prestigious competition. As a result of this event, the Kirklees Publishers have a section of their catalogue known as the ‘Salford Collection’.

A number of previous prize winners have gone on to compose significantly for the brass repertoire. This is an exceptional opportunity to listen to this year’s competition entries. Among the adjudicators will be joint Managing Directors, David and Graham Horsfield.

Performance elective students from within the University’s Music Directorate present a varied programme of entertainment, focusing on original solo repertoire.

The concert forms part of the Repertoire Studies and Performance Practice component of the student’s academic profile. The assessed public concert provides elective performers with a preparatory platform for this specialist academic pursuit within the undergraduate programme.

Back by popular demand, staff from the University’s Music Directorate and special guests, perform another popular evening of jazz music in this special Jazz 645 showcase. This event will also feature Dr Tim Wise who will give this event an authentic 1960s jazz club feel, by the intermittent reciting of jazz poetry.

Iain Culross, cornet and trumpet star, has a long established reputation as one of the leading soloists of his generation; from being principal cornet with the National Youth brass band of Scotland, The Sellers International Band, Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band, the YBS Band, the Fairey Band and his current position as principal cornet with the Leyland Band.

Iain holds a BA (Hons) Music and MA in Music (Performance) at the University of Salford. He is now undertaking research towards a Ph.D specialising in performance psychology and treating focal dystonia in musicians, as well as teaching in the University’s music department.

Dr Howard Evans is a Mus.B (Hons) graduate from the University of Manchester. He also holds Licentiates from the Royal Academy of Music, Trinity College London and Associate of Royal College of Music (Hons) diplomas in piano teaching and performing, as well as horn teaching. He is a postgraduate from the Royal Northern College of Music, gaining a Diploma in Performance Studies (piano). He has since completed his Performance based MA (Dist) from the University of Salford, majoring in conducting and was awarded a ‘Doctor of Musical Arts’ in 2009. Since 2007 Howard has been Director of Classical Performance at the University of Salford.

As a pianist and conductor he has performed at many major concert venues throughout the United Kingdom and has also made regular visits overseas. Howard is currently engaged as the musical director for Jaren Hornmussikkforening in Norway and also works as an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal.

Pianist Nicola Meecham will perform Tom Armstrong’s ‘Morning Music’, followed by a discussion with the composer about the process of interaction with the performer.

They will then workshop pieces for piano by postgraduate composition students from the University of Salford.

With her playing described as “sensational” (‘Gramophone’), pianist Nicola Meecham has been gaining international acclaim for her performances and recordings since her debut for the Park Lane Group Music Series.

Nicola has performed in all the major halls, including Wigmore Hall, St John’s Smith Square, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room. She has given broadcast recitals for BBC Radio 3, Dutch Radio and has featured on BBC 2. Nicola currently teaches at the Royal Welsh College of Music.

Dr Tom Armstrong read music at York University; he studied composition with Roger Marsh and received his DPhil in 1994. His work has been performed all over the UK by leading ensembles including the Endymion Ensemble, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the New Music Players, Psappha, the Composer’s Ensemble, [rout], Trillium brass quartet and Gemini. Radio Three broadcasts have included performances by the BBC Philharmonic and the pianist Andrew Ball.

Salford Sonic Fusion Festival 2013Thursday 21 - Sunday 24 March

This exciting contemporary music festival will present 4 days full of a wide variety of sonic experiences: from sound installations and sound-art to audio-visual and interactive live works; through to live performances; and will include no less than 6 UK and 8 world premiere performances. It will also present many works that combine the audio with the visual, in surprising ways.

These many new works will be allowed to resonate alongside rather older, more historic experimental music, causing an interesting counterpoint and context for musical innovation. For example, the 100th anniversaries of Maurice Ohana and Withold Lutoslawski will be marked, as well as the work of Roland Kayn (1933 - 2011) often credited as being an important (if rather overlooked) pioneer of cybernetic music; one of the elder statesmen of Parisian contemporary Music Paul Mefano (b 1937) will also receive a portrait concert within the festival.

The programme will feature performances by international artists and musicians recognised as having had significant influence in contemporary experimental music such as Roberto Fabbriciani who has collaborated with major contemporary composers Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage and Luigi Nono. Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti, who have been at the forefront of the avant garde popular music scene for the past 20 years will open the festival. These musicians will appear alongside other international figures as well as those of an emerging generation of new and exciting artists including our very own staff and students from the Music Directorate.

Music Directorate Student Ensembles

Performance students on the ensemble musicianship and performance programme have chance to form their own smaller ensembles in order to experience ‘chamber’ work and its specialist orientation.

The ensembles are very much student led, but also benefit from the mentoring and guidance of University of Salford tutors Dr Robert Childs and Peter Christian. As part of the programme of study, we are pleased to say that this is the sixth year in which the ‘Anne Welsh Memorial Ensemble Prize’ has featured as part of this concert. This concert allows the students to demonstrate their skills in this specialist field, and is contributory to the final award.

The University of Salford’s Music Directorate is pleased to announce its 2nd Festival of International Music and Dance. The festival serves as the culmination of a community engagement project; celebrating diversity and stimulating debate on the relationship between music, identity, and community.

All artists in this year’s festivities are local music and dance groups, including Bangdrum, The Chinese Cultural Centre (Manchester), The University of Salford Choir, Rome Mossabir, Capoeira Conviver (Manchester), The Salford University Drumming group, Afro Sonido and Jali Nyongkoling Kuyateh with his University of Salford Kora Group.


Conducted by final year students

Under the direction and supervision of Dr Howard Evans, student conductors in the Music Directorate present a programme of brass and wind band music performed by the respective ensembles in their final lunchtime recital of the academic year. This is very much the culmination of their conducting study, and this final public performance forms part of their preparation for the final examination, which helps determine the award of the ‘Roy Newsome Conducting Prize’.

University of Salford Big Band Directed by Tim France

The University of Salford Big Band is extremely proud to support the Mayor of Salford’s Charities (St. Anne’s Hospice and Banardo’s) by providing the music for this special occasion. The band will play a broad range of repertoire from the 1940s to more contemporary compositions and arrangements.

Food will be served at the beginning of the evening from 7.00pm, which is included in the price of the ticket.

Today’s concert sees the University of Salford Brass Band move south to a significant London venue. Regent Hall features in the performance activity of many of the London Colleges and Conservatoires and this is the fifth time the Band have been invited to perform at this fine hall.

This visit to Regent Hall is an opportunity to showcase the performance and compositional aspects of music courses at the University of Salford to a wider audience.

This is one of the high points towards the end of the academic year for our current students. The programme includes the announcement and presentation of the coveted ‘Anne Welsh Memorial Ensemble Prize’, which will be presented by the Welsh family to the successful student ensemble. There will also be the presentation of the long established ‘Kirklees Composition Competition Award’ by joint Managing Directors, David and Graham Horsfield to the winning student. There are some special features to this event including the premiere of ‘Newsome Variations’ by Darrol Barry, written in memory of Roy Newsome, as well as featuring part of Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto with guest soloist and pianist, Lauryna Sablevicute.


Four consecutive nights of back to back performances from a talented diverse range of student pop and jazz based bands from the Music Directorate.


Performance elective students from within the University’s Music Directorate present their final recital to an examination panel in an arena open to the public. Each programme will represent the culmination of their time here at Salford and their own personal development as performers. This event is the climax to the Repertoire Studies and Performance Practice component of each student’s academic profile and provides each performer with an open platform to demonstrate their musicianship. This event also serves as part of the assessment process for the recommendation to the Harry Mortimer Trust Award.

Hosted at a variety of interesting venues at Salford Quays, the work of our Music students will feature strongly alongside their many creative colleagues to deliver a vibrant set of days at the heart of the new Salford.

We are pleased to present a follow up to last year’s collaboration with the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) here at the University of Salford. This will be the first visit to Salford by the RNCM Brass Band. This event provides a unique opportunity to hear the ensembles of both institutions come together to perform individually and as a massed ensemble. The concert will draw upon their respective archival material, featuring some of the early brass band arrangements and transcriptions and putting this into a contemporary context.
