Edinburgh’s own alternative hip-hop group YOUNG FATHERS will be heading to South Africa for the first time as part of The British Council's Connect ZA programme. The Mercury Prize winners will feature in a two-city tour hosted by South African beats platform Weheartbeat and Cape Town’s Assembly Radio.

The British Council’s Connect ZA is a two year programme which aims to build creative networks between the UK and South Africa through live music, film, visual arts and design and literature. In their first trip to the African continent, Young Fathers will spend time in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, taking part in streamed live music events in both cities as well as workshops and collaboration sessions with South African artists. The band will be performing from 25 February to 3 March.

Young Fathers consists of Graham ‘G’ Hastings, from Edinburgh, Alloysious Massaquoi, originally from Liberia, and Kayus Bankole, born in Edinburgh to Nigerian parents, but partially raised in Maryland, USA. Their live shows are complimented by Steven Morrison (drums & DJ) and occasional guest vocalist Lauren Holt (AKA LAWholt). The group formed after meeting at an under-16s hip hop night at Edinburgh’s Bongo Club when they were 14 years old. Almost immediately they started writing and recording together, initially on an old karaoke machine plugged into a cassette recorder at Graham’s family home. The name ‘Young Fathers’ was born in 2008 as all the three members have their fathers’ names.

The British Council Connect ZA programme has facilitated this first time collaboration between Weheartbeat and The Assembly Radio through its New Music Connections grant scheme. Weheartbeat, a monthly event held in Johannesburg and Cape Town, explores the world of electronic hip hop, soul, jazz and instrumentals. The Assembly Radio is an extension of Cape Town’s iconic music venue, The Assembly.

Tom Porter, Programme Manager Connect ZA, British Council South Africa, said: “We’re excited to be embarking on more international collaborations with our South African partners and are looking forward to working with them to connect Young Fathers with new audiences and the best talent in South Africa. We hope to create a dialogue which will contribute to the continued vitality of cultural life in the UK and open up more opportunities for UK artists and institutions to work in the region.”

Radio students from City of Glasgow College are organising, under the guidance of a music industry mentor, a gig on Wednesday 25 February at Nice n Sleazy. Challenged to learn more about the Scottish music industry the HNC Creative Industries Radio students are working on putting together a live concert series. Youth and inexperience doesn't seem to be a disadvantage as these two combined with enthusiasm and passion is what makes them thrive. Divided in 2 teams named suggestively after the day of the gig, Team Wednesday and Team Thursday have accepted the challenge given by their tutor John Clark and they are doing their best to win the competition and successfully pass the Enterprise

unit. Many opportunities arise from what it seems to be just a college project. Not only students have something to gain from this but also the bands. The bands have the chance to be noticed and promoted. Team Wednesday is relying on the knowledge and experience of Keren McKean, a freelance music industry consultant, CEO of Deep Blue Festival - formerly of DF Concerts, Queen Margaret Union and manager of Snow Patrol. While Team Thursday is mentored by David Weaver co-founder of Detour Scotland who produce niche music promotions, online events and video production, development Officer at Creative Scotland, and formerly of Feisty Productions and Air3Radio. “I am always looking out for great new bands and I am keen to see what bands the students like. If I see anything good, I will pass it on to some of my contacts in publishing companies such as Snow Patrol’s Polar Patrol. Although the two teams are in theory competing with each other, Glasgow is always great at supporting all sorts of bands and pulling together to work as a team. I have enjoyed seeing that happen with these students and also having an opportunity to catch up with Weaver again. “, said Keren McKean, the Team Wednesday mentor. Team Wednesday's fantastic line up composes of Oakmen, The Genes

and The Victorian Trout Conspiracy, who have played in venues such as King Tut’s, are known to have a great impact on the public and make the dance floor

melt under your feet. Tickets are £5 and all attendees are invited to The Garage after party.

Acoustic Gig To Raise Funds For 'Cash For Kids' with The Rising Souls, Ross Arthur and Megan D

A great night of acoustic music will happen at Edinburgh's Electric Circus, on the 21 February in aid of children’s charity Cash For Kids. Julia Hall, a music business student at Perth College UHI, hopes that with the support of her fellow students, friends and family, she will raise an incredible £500 for Cash For Kids. Julia said, “I am excited to be putting on a gig in aid of Cash For Kids. Knowing the money I raise will be used to improve the lives of vulnerable children locally is the best part of it all. I’m putting on this event for Cash For Kids because I really believe in their cause. The charity helps children in the local area. Cash For Kids make a real difference to the lives of the children and families they work with.” The gig will feature the best Edinburgh talent; The Rising Souls will be headlining this gig, for the last year the Edinburgh based 3 piece have been performing great gigs with an absorbing presence and were praised widely at the Edinburgh Festival and further afield. Support will also come from local singer-songwriters Ross Arthur and Megan D.

Tickets for this event are available on Skiddle for £8, or £4 for concessions

Celebrating 10 years of success, live gigs and music, internationally acclaimed band Skerryvore have announced they’ll mark the anniversary with a special open air concert - ‘Skerryvore: Decade’ - on 30 May. Announcing the concert at their sold out Celtic Connections performance, the multi-award winning folk-rock band will play Oban’s Mossfield Stadium with collaborations from renowned acts such as Red Hot hilli Pipers, Sharon Shannon, Scott Wood band, Skipinnish and many more to be announced.

1500 early bird tickets sold out in an amazing 57 minutes on 6 February but the remaining are being released at noon on Friday 13 February at www.skerryvoredecade.com . The event will have a real festival feel that will welcome guests from all over the globe to join in celebrating the 10 year journey of the band. The event is being organised in association with Bid4Oban

with Calmac as an additional key sponsor. Forming on the Scottish island of Tiree in 2005, the raw but contemporary band have expanded in both size and sound over the past decade, creating a unique fusion of traditional music and songs with the sounds of rock, pop and funk. Having performed in over 25 countries over the last 10 years, 2015 is set to take the septet to new heights with a year of international festivals and touring. Decade, will feature some of the band’s favourite tracks since forming in 2005 as well as new collaborations featuring other artists and guests. Says Daniel Gillespie, founding member and accordion player “As a band we really wanted to mark our 10th year by holding the biggest and best Skerryvore gig to date. After researching different locations we chose Mossfield Stadium as Oban is the heart of Argyll & Isles and it felt natural to return to the region that was so prominent in the early development of the band. “We are delighted to be joined by some of the most respected and creative musicians in the trad music scene that we have become friends with during our musical journey over the past decade. Having these friends being part of our special event will only add to the festival feel and help make it a Skerryvore celebration of past and present - with a few surprises thrown in for good measure!”

Still time to register an album for the 2015 'SAY Award' ..... the winner receives £20,000

Do you want to register an album released by a Scottish artist for this year's 'Scottish Album of the Year' - The SAY Award? It's quick, easy and free. Eligible albums must be commercially released between 1 January 2014 and 31 March 2015.

For this year only there's a one off 3-month extension of the eligibility window for SAY 2015, to allow the qualifying period for future awards to run from April to March, aligning it more closely with the award ceremony in June.

Developed by The Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA), The SAY Award is one of Scotland’s most ambitious and lucrative arts prizes. With £20,000 awarded to the winning album, nine runners-up prizes of £1,000 and an Art Commission valued at £20,000, The SAY Award champions the strength and diversity of Scotland’s musical output and the vital, enduring relationship it shares with the world of visual art.

The SAY Award Longlist is announced in April: twenty albums promoted over a four week period before being subsequently reduced to a shortlist of ten (nine of which are selected by an independent panel of judges with the tenth being decided by public vote). The ten shortlisted albums then go forward to The SAY Award ceremony in June, where they each receive an artwork created by the winner of The SAY Art Commission before finding out which one has been named by our panel of judges as The Scottish Album of the Year.

Determining which albums constitute The SAY

Award Longlist is the responsibility of 100 impartial ‘Nominators’ representing genres and sectors from across the music industry and the arts. Nominators are asked to consider titles from our ‘Eligible Albums List’, nominating their five favourites and ranking them in order of preference so they can be assigned a score (1st = 10 pts; 2nd = 8pts etc.). Once all of the Nominators’ submissions have been collated, scored and verified by an independent auditor, the 20 highest-scoring albums are officially announced as The SAY Award Longlist.

Ensuring the ‘Eligible Albums List’ is as exhaustive as possible remains one of The SAY Award’s key challenges, so we’re continuing to employ our ‘registration process’ which was first introduced in 2013. A dynamically populated database of albums released by Scottish artists within the qualifying period, The SAY Award ‘Eligible Albums List’ comprises titles put forward by labels, publishers, artists and fans to offer us all a fascinating and comprehensive summary of Scotland’s musical output.

Registering an album is free and will only take a few seconds of your time: fill in the required information, submit your album for consideration and, if the album meets the eligibility criteria, it will be posted officially onto the ‘Eligible Albums List’. Once an album has been officially registered on the list, you can share its inclusion across social media platforms and watch the list grow as we near the end of the eligibility period. It is hoped that this list will represent the entire output of albums by Scottish artists over our qualifying period: make sure your favourite long player is on there.

BBC Introducing, the BBC’s new talent scheme which gives undiscovered and unsigned music artists a platform, will for the first time feature world music in 2015, through working with BBC Radio 3. As the only dedicated world music programme on network radio, BBC Radio 3’s World On 3

programme will help to discover and champion emerging roots-based talent around the UK; through working with BBC Introducing, the unsigned artists will be offered high profile performance opportunities and a platform for their music. World On 3 regularly features high profile musicians from around the world and appears at industry festivals WOMAD, Celtic Connections and WOMEX. Through partnering with BBC Introducing, Radio 3 will give new unsigned world music artists a platform through regular air-time on World on 3. Artists who play roots-based music from any culture are invited to submit their tracks to the BBC Introducing website, and the expert presenters and producers at World On 3 will then choose a selection of the best tracks to play on the programme. The crème de la crème will also be invited onto the show for regular live sessions and offered an opportunity to appear at festivals where BBC Radio 3 hosts a stage such as Womad and Celtic Connections. Through BBC Introducing, the artists will also be offered wider opportunities to appear on other network BBC radio stations and platforms. The collaboration between BBC Radio 3 and BBC Introducing is part of BBC Music, a commitment made by the Director General of the BBC, Tony Hall, to celebrating Music across BBC platforms. World On 3 presenter Lopa Kothari says: “If BBC Introducing had been around in my day this is just the thing that would have given me and

my band a chance to be heard across the UK and who knows maybe all over the World! So, go on, upload your stuff to BBC Introducing and open up your music to a whole new world of possibilities.” Jason Carter Head of BBC Introducing comments: "As part of the development of BBC Introducing, 2015 will see the proposition extend more widely across BBC platforms and genres. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Radio 3 and excited about the potential new talent we will unearth." www.facebook.com/BBCintroducing https://twitter.com/bbcintroducing www.bbc.co.uk/music/introducing/uploader

Celtic Music Radio 95FM, the charitable community radio station based in Glasgow, has broken its audience record for this year's Celtic Connections.

More than 115,976 people tuned in either on 95FM across Glasgow or via its website as the station broadcast live for the 10th year running at Connections, which ended on 1 February.

Its 30-strong team of volunteers, with technical support from Glasgow Caledonian University Audio Technology students, broadcast live for 116 hours and this included live sets from 80 musicians and groups from Scotland, other parts of the UK and overseas.

“We wanted to be at the heart of Celtic Connections and these audience figures, our highest ever, show that we have,” said Celtic Music Radio chairperson, Alex Jenkins.

“On average we have 72,000 listeners a month in the Glasgow area and in 175 countries worldwide online – so the increase for January has been remarkable and hugely gratifying.

"This was our 10th year of supporting Celtic Connections and we are both pleased and humbled that so many people appreciated our programmes, which we offered eight hours a day during the festival.

“We would like to thank everyone who tuned in, the musicians who played live sessions and the GCU students for making them sound great.

With our hardy band of volunteers of presenters as well, it has been a tremendous team effort."

Celtic Music Radio 95FM is the only Ofcom-licenced radio station with a mission to support and promote Scottish music and culture – and it offers a festival of music, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Donald Shaw, Artistic Director of Celtic

Connections, has already praised Celtic Music Radio for its ongoing and invaluable support all year round.

SCOTTISH MUSIC CENTRE ............ member profile:

Louise Rutkowski "The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members

Along with sister Dee, Louise Rutkowski's music career began as a backing singer with The Jazzateers, for legendary Scottish label, Postcard Records. The Rutkowski Sisters went on to form Sunset Gun with co-writer Ross Campbell, signing to CBS Records in the 1980s, and working with legendary soul producer Pete Wingfield and Alan Rankine (The Associates).

They thereafter lent their ethereal vocals to the 4AD Records' collective This Mortal Coil, garnering an international following. Louise's distinctive voice can also be heard on the This Mortal Coil follow-up, The Hope Blister. In the early 90s, as part of The Kindness of Strangers, a one-album project with composer Craig Armstrong and playwright Peter Arnott, Louise was lead vocalist on "Hope", released on Interscope Records; which included mixes by Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and Nellee Hooper (Soul II Soul, Bjork).

Louise's first solo album, "Diary of Lost Girl", co-written with fellow Glaswegian, Irvin Duguid, was released in February 2014, funded through direct-to-fan platform, PledgeMusic. Since its release, "Diary" has been featured on BBC Radio Scotland's "Culture Show" (Janice Forsyth), Tom Morton, Roddy Hart, and Clyde 2 (Billy Sloan live session). A single from the album, "Help Me" was released in March 2014 and has been receiving regular airplay from BBC Radio Scotland, Radio 2, as well as many regional digital stations.

“Diary of a Lost Girl” has been described by its supporters as, “A truly haunting and beautiful album”, “Beautiful, stirring, and alive with emotion”, and “Pure poetic, lovelorn angst at its best”. Produced by Irvin Duguid, it includes mixes by Calum Malcolm (The Blue Nile), and Steve Orchard.

Based in London until 2005, she returned to her home town of Glasgow, where she was introduced to musician Irvin Duguid and was struck by the wealth of delicate and beautiful fragments of music that he had written and stored away. Work began, with Louise providing lyrics and co-writing melodies, until the loss of her mother, Mimi, in September 2007, and work ceased for several years. “‘Diary of Lost Girl’ in some respects picks up where ‘Diva’ by Annie Lennox left off, but leans more towards the introspection and atmosphere of The Blue Nile and Canadian songstress Mary Margaret O’Hara, whose album ‘Miss America’ is a major influence, as is Kate Bush” said Louise Rutkowski.” Most definitely music for grown-ups, “Diary of a Lost Girl” covers subjects ranging from obsession, infidelity, and trying to survive in an increasingly confused and confusing world. It has light and shade, however, as it also celebrates love and the pleasures gained from being still and appreciating the simpler things in life.

Louise said, “The album reflects my own personal journey in writing again after many years. For the first time I have a body of work that truly reflects who I am as a person and as a musician. When I began writing with Irvin Duguid we had no fixed idea of where we were going musically, or even if it would result in anything as tangible as an album!” For Rutkowski in particular, “Diary of a Lost Girl” marks the achievement of a growing vision throughout the writing process of what type of artist she could be, given the right circumstances and collaborator. She said' “Through the writing I can also now start to realise other creative ambitions for its visual identity, as is reflected in the cover design and in how the music will be staged live; by drawing on my long-term influences, such as Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and theatre productions in general.”

Sorren Maclean’s new EP, Way Back Home - Sorren’s delicate indie folk sound perfectly captures the desolate beauty of his homeland on the Isle Of Mull. There’s a warmth to his voice and guitar playing that gives the listener a feeling of closeness. This is none more apparent on EP track ‘If Not For You’, where one feels that Sorren could almost be in the room with you. While the title track Way Back Home portrays the longing desperation of life on the road, and the bittersweet homecoming that follows upon the journey back to a more sedate normality. There is a definitive and accomplished quality to Sorren’s sound that allows his voice and guitar to share the spotlight simultaneously. Growing up on the Isle of Mull, Sorren began playing in bands from age 11. He recorded his debut album, Island, with Colin MacIntyre of Mull Historical Society, which led on to Idlewild singer Roddy Woomble inviting Sorren to co-write his second solo album, The Impossible Song and Other Songs, and they’ve been working together ever since. As well as playing and touring with Roddy and Mull Historical Society, Sorren also plays in a duo with virtuoso guitarist Finlay Wells. He also produced the EP Echoes by singer Laurie Cameron, which was used in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks and his songs have appeared in E4's Beaver Falls. Sorren regularly works and records with composer Donald Shaw of Capercaillie, creating music for the soundtracks to BBC Two’s acclaimed Hebrides series and the award winning childrens tv show Katie Morag, as well as many BBC documentaries including McQueen of Scots. Sorren’s undoubted talent has seen him transcend his own musical projects, having performed on over 20 albums, including upcoming releases from Nashville singer Eliza Lynn and one of Scotlands finest

exports, King Creosote whom he is supporting currently on tour. With new album Winter Stay Autumn due before the summer and a support tour with Idlewild in March, 2015 looks set to be one of his busiest years yet. GIGnotes: Catch Sorren supporting Idlewild across the UK this March: 7th: ABC, Glasgow 10th: The Institute, Birmingham 12th: The Ritz, Manchester 13th: Roundhouse, London

Scotland's most exciting country rock & roll band follow up their sensational debut album with a captivating EP, broadening their horizons from the 'Exile' era Stones and Flying Burrito Brothers to include a more soulful, 70s FM rock radio sound, while maintaining the country rock & roll rhythm that runs through their veins.

From the dusty back streets of the Carolinas, The Holy Ghosts are hitting the road with a soundtrack fit for that big trip on the highways and byways heading across the whole musical landscape of the United States. With End Of The Line and it's Memphis horns, the taut Jersey Shore guitar licks of Velvet Moon - replete with West Coast sunshine psychedelia breakdown, the dustbowl pedal steel on Ties That Bind or Shot At Dawn's lazy rhythm conjuring images of prairie folk music from the frontier, The Holy Ghosts are opening up to all their Americana influences. As always though, their lyrical storytelling is deeply rooted at home, none more so than with Shot At Dawn with it's poignant tale of Thomas Highgate, the first British soldier shot for desertion in the Great War.

Recorded at Tpot Studio, an old schoolhouse studio in rural Perthshire over a weekend by Robin Wynn Evans (Manic Street Preachers, The View, Dodgy), the band wanted the rustic surrounds to translate onto the EP. That has certainly been achieved with an earthiness, a spaciousness and a liveness coming through that is reminiscent of the depth of sound of days gone by, but is sadly often lacking in today's homogenised studio recordings. Clean and crisp music was not the goal, rather to capture a moment in time and to let the recordings be the product of their environment, rather than the product of a computer screen.

The recording of the EP, as the title suggests, was an exploration for The Holy Ghosts. Fortunately for the listener, the destination is more than satisfactory.

End Of The World And Other Multifarious Destinations is released on 16 March 2015 on 10” vinyl and digital download through Fox Box Records via the band's website and major vinyl stockists.

The Holy Ghosts are: Jack Sandison: Guitar/Vocals / Jon Mackenzie: Guitar/Vocals / Andy Barbour: Keys/Harmonica/Vocals / Angus Ross: Drums/Percussion

David Knowles is a distinctive vocalist and songwriter based in Edinburgh, with a growing international social media following. Lyrically, David draws inspiration from classic writers including William Blake, Oscar Wilde, Jack Kerouac and Hunter Thompson. Years spent travelling the world (including Latin America, Asia and Europe) have provided a rich vein of inspiration for his songwriting and familiarity with a range of exotic instruments including the Didjeridoo, African Djembe drum and far eastern Dulcimer. With a depth and range that bely his relatively tender years, David’s voice has drawn favourable comparisons to such iconic performers as Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Grammy award-winning country singer Ray Lamontagne. With a busy schedule of live performances already planned, 2015 promises to be a big year for David Knowles including the launch of debut album “Footsteps” on 9 March.

Flight of Time Album cd / download Release Date: 3 November Flight Of Time is that album. And it takes Siobhan’s talents far beyond anything we might’ve anticipated. Made over a period of two years, in collaboration with reputed singer-songwriter James Grant, Flight Of Time may seem far from the trad ballads Siobhan is famed for. But these 10 contemporary songs are, for her, as compelling as any ancient tale. “I’m not turning my back on traditional music,” she explains. “For me, folk songs have the same purpose as the songs I’ve recorded on this album. It’s the storytelling element of both that I love. What that song means to you is what matters.” Listen/Watch: www.siobhanmiller.com Available from: www.verticalrecords.co.uk www.siobhanmiller.com https://twitter.com/Siobhan_Miller www.facebook.com/SiobhanMillerMusic

VASQUEZ Thumb Music single download Release Date: 17 November We are VASQUEZ. We make ‘action-packed’ rock. VASQUEZ was originally three guys who met on Gumtree following a post looking for band members by guitarist/founding member Ciaran Mckenna. The ad lead to him meeting Richard James Iremonger (bass) and Jon Adam (drums) in 2009 and them coming up with the name VASQUEZ; after the hard as nails, heavy machine-gun wielding bad-ass from the film ‘Aliens’. Unfortunately in December 2010 James had to leave the band and that was when Sean Quinn took over on bass duties. DANCING MICE Quiz Culture Album cd / download Release Date: 1 December Music from a little-explored evolutionary branch of rock which separated off probably in the late 70's and provides visitors with a highly coloured, almost identifiable, but not quite, assortment of influences and mutations. The songs show, however, some contact with the outside world; the subject matter is contemporary, with a third eye cast on the humdrum and catastrophic.
