Wide Days To Unveil UK Plans For Ground-Breaking Touring Network

Scotland’s spring music convention, Wide Days, is to unveil plans for a UK version of a musician-led touring network, which boasts 30,000 members in its native Brazil and last year facilitated over 6,000 gigs.

Details of the British Fora Do Eixo, which will run under its translated name Off Axis, are to be included in a special presentation at the Edinburgh event on Thursday 11 April. The talk will be given by Jeff Thompson, from the Manchester-based Un-Convention organisation which hosts grassroots music events around the world and is spearheading the initiative: “We have supported Wide Days since its launch in 2010 and it is the perfect platform to announce our plans for Off Axis,” he says. Commenting on the addition to the programme, Wide Days co-organiser Olaf Furniss says: “I am delighted that Wide Days is able to provide the first opportunity in the UK for people to learn about this exciting venture, which has the potential to help many artists.” In Brazil, the Fora Do Eixo touring network was launched to help acts reach new audiences in cities and festivals in other parts of their country. Musicians with a fanbase in their own region host acts from outside, and in return receive credits which they can use. Founded in 2005 the network has become a powerful lobby for artists and is set to be the subject of a film by leading music business commentator, Andrew Dubber, and the makers of the documentary, Last Shop Standing.

Conceived by associate Josh Armstrong, Cryptic’s innovative new cross-art form experience invites audiences to indulge their senses and spend the night somewhere else – on foreign soil. The Embassy is a simulation of an envisioned future, through the lens of the extravagant Embassy of New Great Britain. The evening’s entertainment includes the performance of New Great Britain’s quintessential tribute, Requiem for a World – commissioned music from composer David Donaldson, scored for counter-tenor Steve Dugardin, Astrid String Quartet, and electronics. Fusing performance, live music, food and drink, offering its audience an entertaining, immersive experience, this is an evening of satiation, where you can indulge in luxury: live music, cocktails, tastings and other pleasures which stimulate the senses and intoxicate the imagination. New Great Britain is a vision of future Britain. It takes place in a future with no exact date, but a series of benchmark moments in history: · Scotland has left the union · Sea levels have risen significantly · London City is flooded · The monarchy has renounced its rule New Great Britain is a society that embraces the beauty of the individual and glories in its outward expression. A body is not to cover up, but to be celebrated. New Great Britain is an envisioned future in which gender and sex boundaries no longer exist and individuals are liberated in lavish acceptance. Josh Armstrong was born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA and studied at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Starting his career as a dancer, his works now span a wide range of disciplines from theatrical design to experiential installations, from the visualisation of music to the direction of music-theatre works. Josh is Cryptic’s inaugural Associate Artist for 2011-2013 and an Associate Artist of Cumbernauld Theatre. Josh’s directing and design works include: David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion and World to Come for Cryptic; Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ Le Jongleur de Notre Dame for the Hebrides Ensemble; and The Sounding for Cryptic Nights. Josh currently lectures on The Contemporary Performance Practice Programme at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. David Donaldson is a graduate from the SAE in Glasgow whose 16-year career has covered almost every facet of sound production from recording, producing and mastering live bands to his recent music productions for both commercial release and film. He has enjoyed a long working relationship with Glasgow born composer Craig Armstrong programming and co-producing on over ten films and various commercial and artistic projects. In 2001 he won a Grammy Award for producing and engineering the soundtrack for Ray, a biopic about the life of Ray Charles. David has just finished working on The Great Gatsby and is currently composing his first work for Cryptic as well as working on Mirror Music’s second album in collaboration with Silicone Soul’s Graeme Reedie, to be released on the Darkroom Dubs label in the near future.

HADDINGTON PIPE BAND WINS BBC PERFORMING ARTS FUND GRANT FOR ONE-YEAR MUSIC FELLOWSHIP

Haddington Pipe Band has been announced as a winner – one of just 19 throughout the UK - of a BBC Performing Arts Fund grant. The award, made under the Fund’s Music Fellowship scheme, is given to musical organisations to partner with up-and-coming musicians and will enable the band to work for one year with one of the country’s leading young composers, Ailie Robertson. Announcing the awards, the BBC Performing Arts Fund stated that this year’s successful organisations “were able to demonstrate that a Fellowship placement with them would offer significant professional development opportunities for a Fellow”. Over the next year, Ailie Robertson will spend time on a regular basis with Haddington Pipe Band, both to build up her own expertise and to work on compositions with the band. The range of outcomes of the project will include an ‘end-of-year’ performance by the band of a work specially composed for them by Ailie. Originally from Edinburgh, Ailie Robertson is a composer, arranger, improviser and multi-instrumentalist, and after seven years working as a professional touring musician, is currently studying for a postgraduate degree in composition at King’s College London. In 2011 she was nominated as Composer of the Year at

the Scots Trad Music Awards; in 2010 she was commissioned by Creative Scotland to write a suite of music, Traditional Spirits (premiered at Glenkinchie Distillery), which was described by one critic as “seamlessly blending traditional, classical and jazz influences to create an exquisitely moving little masterpiece”; while her debut album won a Live Ireland award in 2009. She has composed for a diverse range of projects, in a variety of styles, but working with a pipe band will be a new experience for her – one which she sees as opening the way for her to broaden her knowledge in this field. She commented: “I am absolutely delighted to have this opportunity to work with Haddington Pipe Band. I look forward to developing our relationship over the coming year, and am excited to start working with, and composing for,

them. “The Fellowship will be a valuable opportunity for the band to stretch their abilities and create a new repertoire, and will allow me to develop my own skills as a composer in a totally new field.” Haddington Pipe Band is a non-competing, community band which was the winner of the Pipe Band of the Year title at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2009. It also set up and runs the annual Trad on the Tyne festival in the town. Its chairman, Alastair Bruce, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the band to share a creative partnership with one of Scotland’s top young composers. We are thrilled to have been awarded this very prestigious grant, and working closely with Ailie Robertson over the coming months will be a real delight for us. “We very much appreciate the privilege of being able to build this creative partnership with her, and as well as Ailie learning about the challenges of composing for pipes and drums, we are very much looking forward to being given a real insight into the composing ‘process’ by working with her over our year together. “We are very grateful to the BBC Performing Arts Fund for giving us this opportunity.” Haddington Pipe Band is a non-competing, community band which was the winner of the Pipe Band of the Year title at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2009. It also set up and runs the annual Trad on the Tyne festival in Haddington, which was shortlisted (and won a commendation) for the Best Small Festival in Scotland award at the Scottish Event Awards in September 2012. www.haddingtonpipeband.co.uk

World renowned sound artist Bill Fontana is set to unveil his latest ground-breaking project in Glasgow this April when he transforms the city’s iconic Finnieston Crane into a musical instrument. Fontana has created works around some of the world’s most iconic buildings and locations including the Arc de Triomphe, and Chesil Beach. His last installation marked the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge and attracted global media interest. He will apply similar groundbreaking techniques to those used in San Francisco to the Finnieston Crane. By attaching super-sensitive microphones to tap into the deep sounds the crane makes (which are not audible to the human ear), and marrying these deep sounds to an extraordinary visual of the crane, he shows us the familiar structure as we have never seen or heard it before. This brand new installation, Silent Echoes – Finnieston Crane – Glasgow will be revealed on 18th April at Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art. Live sounds and images from the crane will be transmitted via satellite to a specially created structure located under the portico at the entrance to GOMA, immersing visitors to the gallery in the sounds of the crane, accompanied by mesmerizing visuals of the crane. The project is the first of Glasgow UNESCO City of Music’s Glasgow Commissions, which will celebrate the vibrancy and rich heritage of the city and its culture by inviting international artists to draw inspiration from it. Bill Fontana is one of the world’s leading sound artists, who developed an international reputation for his pioneering experiments in sound, using the most sophisticated technology available to create pieces which are moving, poetic and rich. He uses sound as a sculptural medium to interact with and transform perceptions of landscape and architectural settings. These have been installed in public spaces and museums around the world including San Francisco, New York, Paris, London, Berlin, Venice, Sydney and Tokyo. His latest installation in Glasgow, commissioned by Glasgow UNESCO City of Music, with support from Creative Scotland, is the culmination of more than a year of development and work which has also seen Fontana give a seminar on his work and practice in the city. Svend Brown, Director of Glasgow UNESCO City of Music said: “One thing Glasgow UNESCO City of Music does is to draw attention internationally to the fantastic home to arts and creativity that Glasgow is. By linking top class international work like Bill’s to iconic aspects of our landscape we take the name of Glasgow far and wide, we give the world a great piece of art – and we get to see the city through a stranger’s eyes: Bill’s work on the Crane has been an inspiration to the whole team. We’re thrilled to be working with him on our very first Glasgow Commission – this series will continue to see more of the world’s greatest artists create work reflecting our city and its history.” Bill Fontana said: “I’m incredibly excited to be staging my latest installation in Glasgow – it’s a wonderful city with an international reputation for its vibrant music scene and rich industrial heritage. The Finnieston Crane is an emblem of the city’s engineering past, and I hope this project will uncover sounds that will fascinate and surprise the people of Glasgow and beyond, as well as tap into the history of this iconic structure.” Silent Echoes will run until 3rd May – for further information visit www.silentechoes-glasgow.com

The Influential Albums app – www.facebook.com/appcenter/influential_albums

CU Marketing, a very small Shetland based business, got a surprise when their ‘influential albums’ app caused such a stir amongst music buffs that it went globally viral. Nearly a million people installed it in just over a week even though CU Marketing spent just £8.14 on Facebook advertising! While experimenting with creating their second Facebook app, co-owner Andrew Irvine created Influential Albums. The app going globally viral in just over a week has come as a complete surprise to him. Andrew said: “I made up a list of 100 albums and created an app where people can say which of them they own. The quiz title is ‘100 Influential Albums – Very few people own 70 or more. How many have you got?’

The list is made up of some of my favourite albums and a few others picked up from various lists on the internet. The only relevant website domain name I could find was www.influentialalbums.com, so I just went with it. I’m no expert when it comes to music. For me, the whole point of doing this was to learn more about Facebook apps. I

had no idea it would annoy music buffs so much that they would write blogs about it and post their comments about it on hundreds of music forums. Some of the comments have been very amusing for us, there was one that said the development must have taken some ‘big marketing bucks’ and a couple of people said that the app ‘must have been created by the director of HMV to clear some old albums’. Little did they know, the total ‘marketing bucks’ spent was £8.14 and that it was just me improving my knowledge on developing Facebook apps. I’d love to get it to a million now, so I’ve started adding new features and letting people suggest their own albums for inclusion. Hopefully that will appease the music experts who weren’t impressed with my choice of music. I think it’s turning into a good place for people to find out about music that they've not heard. It has definitely educated me on some interesting albums I hadn’t heard of before. For me, the best things about doing this are that I’ve been tweeted about by the singer of ‘The Wedding Present’ and been mentioned on the official Facebook page of legendary krautrock band, ‘Can’.” At time of writing, the app has been shown on Facebook over 68 million times, 708,092 people have installed it and 335,382 have shared their results. The website has at least 547 other websites linking to it and has had 1.48 million unique visitors so far. It has been picked up by some unexpected people in the media as well! Bristol Community FM did the quiz with a local up and coming band ‘An Axe’ and it has even been covered in a blog by Dan Weiss on the Village Voice (New York alternative newsweekly which has won 3 Pulitzer prizes and various other awards). The Village Voice blog link - http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/2013/01/garbage_influential_albums_list.php CU Marketing Ltd is owned by brother and sister, Andrew and Christena Irvine. Wide Days is pleased to announce Spotify director Mark Williamson for the event’s keynote speech, as part of a session devoted to the business of streaming. He will give an overview of Spotify’s position in the industry, opportunities for growth and what this means to artists and rightsholders. Williamson’s talk will be preceded by a myth-busting overview of the streaming business presented by Andy Zondervan, who is New Business Development Manager at Dutch collection society Buma/Stemra, and responsible for programming interactive and innovation panels at Eurosonic Noorderslag. The presentations will be followed by a short panel discussion and Q&A featuring both guests, who will also be available for individual, 15-minute meetings with delegates. “Edinburgh has the highest concentration of Spotify users in the UK, so it is particularly fitting to be speaking at Wide Days,” says Williamson, who heads the company’s Artist Services division in Europe. Wide Days co-organiser, Olaf Furniss, adds: “This is a fantastic addition to our programme and offers the music industry in Scotland the first real opportunity to explore an increasingly important area of the business.” The session will draw on figures relating to global sales of recorded music, due to be published on Monday [April 8].

WIDE DAYS 2013 SHOWCASE ACTS Wide Days has completed its showcase line up for the event which takes place in Edinburgh on 10-11 April. Masked techno trio Roman Nose, Highland grunge band Garden Of Elks and brass-infused Saint Max and The Fanatics, complete the line up, which also includes Fatherson, Siobhan Wilson, Washington Irving and Fat Goth. All three acts were chosen in consultation with an industry panel. “We discovered some amazing acts by inviting submissions and it was a hard task to narrow it down to the final selection,” says Wide Days director, Olaf Furniss. “I would like to thank everyone who applied.” Wide Days deliberately focuses on a small number of acts, working closely with the artists to ensure the showcases are a success. Previous participants include PAWS, Rachel Sermanni, Stanley Odd, Meursault, Withered Hand and FOUND, who have all gone on to sign deals, tour internationally and pick up significant festival bookings. Admission to the gigs is included in the delegate pass, but a limited number of free tickets are available via the Wide Days website. Registration for the daytime conference – which includes seminars on music publishing, promoters and music photography – range from £25 to £125. Be part of the Festival’s charity fundraising Minstrel Walk and help break a musical record! As over 120 international artists converge on Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange for the three-day Edinburgh Guitar & Music Festival (25-27 May), the organisers are also looking to attract local talent as part of a record-breaking performance. A Minstrel Walk is being held at the Festival’s Guitar on the Green location on each of the three days to raise funds for Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland, one of the Festival partners. The Minstrel Walk starts at 10.00am every day. Participants are encouraged to dress up in costume while walking, playing guitar and performing the Proclaimers’ hit “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”. Prizes will be given for the most original costumes. Walk Co-ordinator Gary Clinton has created a special video, viewable on the event’s Facebook page, that teaches participants how to perform the song. The Minstrel Walk also aims to beat the current record of the most people performing the same song.

“To make this a record-breaking event, we need huge numbers of people taking part” says Ged Brockie from Guitar & Music Festivals Ltd. “Anyone can participate, regardless of musical ability and experience. The main thing is to have fun, raise money and if we can break any records as well, it will be fantastic”.

Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland employs music therapists from a range of training backgrounds. Glasgow Alt.Blues troubadour Dave Arcari plays a special show with Texan blues’n’roots singer/songwriter Scott H Biram and London one-man-skronk-blues experience Honkeyfinger at Broadcast, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow on Saturday 13 April. The show marks the recent release of Arcari’s fifth studio album Whisky in my Blood on Finnish label Blue North Records. As well as CD, Whisky in my Blood is available on limited edition heavyweight coloured vinyl (with a free digital download) and via iTunes and other download services. Arcari – who has a six-week US tour scheduled for July and August – has shared the stage with major artists including country/Americana legend Steve

Earle, the mighty Alabama 3, Seasick Steve, Toby Keith and veteran blues-rocker Robin Trower. A regular at UK and European festivals, Arcari cites recent highlights as Glastonbury; Moulin Blues Festival in Holland; Belgium’s Peer Festival (alongside Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa and Steve Winwood); BluesAlive in the Czech Republic and Poland. Headline shows in Finland, Estonia, Germany and Ireland as well as across the UK continue to take Arcari and his music to a wider audience beyond the confines of any specific genre. Showcased over eight CD releases to date, Dave Arcari’s National guitar-driven alt.blues owes as much to trash country, punk and rockabilly as it does pre-war Delta blues.

JOHN GOLDIE and The Acoustic Unit : album - 'Chocolate Maze' release date - 11 April : www.johngoldie.co.uk

The latest live studio CD from one of Scotland’s most gifted acoustic guitarists. His fifth studio album for the Highlands-based Watercolour Music and the second with his band “The Acoustic Unit”. Thirteen new studio tracks from the band whose previous release was described as “confident, assertively performed and startlingly different”. To launch the CD, they will be performing a few choice cuts at the Scottish Music Information Centre, City Halls, Glasgow on Thursday 11th April at 6pm. Free Entry. Recorded and produced at Watercolour Music’s with John Goldie’s regular producer, Nick Turner, the CD continues the eclectic Highland label’s passion for ‘live’ studio recording. John is now recognised as one of the most revered players on the acoustic circuit undertaking worldwide

tours, taking in USA, Asia and Europe as well as collaborating with some of the world’s greatest players, including Tommy Emmanuel, Ike Isaacs and George Benson. In fact George asked John to play a private concert for him and his band after one of their concerts in Scotland. John was also asked recently to play with The Faces at the Royal Albert Hall which he described as ‘a surreal but amazing experience!’ As well as performing solo, with Martin Taylor and with Spirit of Django, John also tours with his own quartet. The band comprises of some of Scotland’s finest musician from the world of jazz, Celtic and folk. The band is driven by the drum and percussion skills of Jim Drummond. Jim is best known as a rock drummer but has a touch that few can match. Giving Jim a run for his money is Duncan Lyle on double bass. A star of the jazz world, Duncan is a versatile player who adds an extra dimension to the band. The line up is completed by accordionist Angus Lyon who has the spirit of Fredo Gardoni within him. His flare adds touches that make the music come alive. With a band of this quality behind him, John is allowed to experiment and improvise giving their performances an edge that is hard to replicate on record. Make no mistake… this is one of the best live bands around.
