Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

Are we diverging or converging? That is the question. At least, that was the question participants at last

week's NAB European Conference in Berlin were asking. With the digital era radically transforming the radio

landscape, one school of thought -the "divergence" propo-nents -claims that digital developments are creating aset of different competing businesses. On the other handthe "converging" enthusiasts, view all these new digitalgoodies as one expanding jigsaw where all the pieces fitwith one another.

At this stage, it's probably as important as defining thesex of angels. No matter how you look at it -convergenceor divergence -radio is in the thick of it, and those who arenot acting now will have a painful wake-up call tomorrow.

This was particularly apparent in all the Internet -related sessions and in the presentations regarding digi-tal radio -yes, the beast is still alive!

The general consensus is that the radio industry ismoving from a single model of development -over theair -to several new models -on cable, via satellite, through the 'Net, via digital transmission and on mobileapplications -all of which both compete with and comple-ment each other.

That said, there were some voices -most notably thatof Chrysalis Radio chief executive Phil Riley -who intro-duced some notes of caution. Yes, he said, the world ofradio as we know it is changing, but the introduction ofnew technologies always take time before making animpression on the mass market.

After all, he claimed, it took30 years for the Internet tobecome mainstream, so the newtechnologies will certainly havean impact, but not as quickly assome would think.

In the meantime, broadcast-ers will have to continue toinvest fortunes in the Internetor in digital radio simply to keepup with the pack.

GWR expands with Marcherby Jon Heasman

LONDON - The GWR Group has fur-ther extended its UK radio empire bypaying £12.1 million (euro 20.5 m) totake over the loss -making MarcherRadio Group.

Marcher, which was one of the fewremaining independently -ownedgroups in UK radio, operates one AMand four FM licences covering aroundone million adults in Cheshire andNorth Wales. Its stations areMFM/Wrexham, Marcher Gold/Wrex-ham, Champion FM/Bangor, CoastFM/Colwyn Bay and The Buzz97.1/Birkenhead.

GWR already owned 20% ofMarcher, which recorded pre-tax loss-es of £475,000 on a turnover of £1.7 m

in the financial year ending Septem-ber 2000. The take-over means thatGWR stations will now account for23% of commercial radio's total audi-ence in the UK.

Godfrey Williams will remain withMarcher as its non -executive 'chair-man, but is replaced as managingdirector of the Marcher Group by JoshEasby, who first worked for GWR inNew Zealand when it acquired thatcountry's Prospect radio group.Easby's subsequent projects for GWRhave included a spell as managingdirector at Chiltern FM in Luton and, most recently, as executive chairmanof the York -based Minster SoundGroup and Stray FM/Harrogate.

Leading the new programmingteam at Marcher will be industry vet-

eran Graham Ledger, who joins fromDarlington's Alpha 103.2, where hewas programme director. Ledgerreplaces Terry Underhill, who recent-ly left Marcher to become programmedirector at Cardiff AC/talk stationReal Radio.

Meanwhile, GWR's pre-tax profitshave increased by 9.2% for the sixmonths ending September 30.Turnover was up by 23.7% from £47.5million to £58.7m. The eight radiostations which GWR acquired fromDMG Radio earlier this year havebeen integrated into the group duringthe past three months, although acompany statement reports that thefinancial performance of those sta-tions "has been slightly below our ini-tial expectations."

WORLD MUSIC SPOTLIGHT

WOMEX applauds enterprising IndiesThis year's world music trade fair and conferenceWOMEX might have been the largest to date-signallingcontinuing optimism and growth in the sector-but it'senterprising independent labels that are leading theway, not the majors, as Nigel Williamson reports.

More than 1,000 delegatesand 100 exhibitorsattended this year'sWOMEX, the annualworld music trade fair

and conference, at the House of WorldCultures in Berlin.

Now in its eighth year, it was thelargest WOMEX to date, attractinglabel executives, promoters, agents, managers, distributors, broadcastersand other professionals from everyarea of this burgeoning sector of themusic industry and drawn from allover Europe, America, Africa andAsia. In addition a series of showcas-es presented artists from more than30 territories.

Although there have been big -sell-ing world music albums on major

labels this year, (notably Barclay/Universal with Khaled's Kenza andSony with Youssou N'Dour's Joko),WOMEX is essentially a celebrationof the enterprise and adventure of thesmaller independents. GeraldSeligman, one of the seven strongWOMEX jury who this summer lefthis post running EMI's Hemisphereworld music imprint to become anindependent consultant, summed upthe mood of optimism.

Keynote address"It seems that majors are just too big,too stressed, too commercial, toodamn busy to give world music thetime to develop these artists," he saidin a keynote address. Pointing to the

phenomenal success ofBuena Vista Social Club,he observed that only anindependent such as

World Circuit couldpossibly have had"the time and know-how" to develop theproject. It was exact-ly the sort of recordthat would or couldnever have been

made by a majorlabel.

In an upbeat mes-sage, Seligman added:"The opportunities forindependents in genresand niches like this canonly multiply over thecoming years. Just asthe majors are failingat world music, theindependent net-

works who meet at WOMEX are com-ing into their own."

Last year WOMEX inaugurated anannual award for outstanding contri-bution to world music and the firstrecipients were World Circuit directorNick Gold and the Cuban band leaderJuan d'Marcos Gonzalez for theirwork on Buena Vista. This year'saward went to South African town-ship mbananga veterans theMahotella Queens, for their "finelyhoned art of passionate singing, lat-ticework of funky rhythms and spec-tacular live performance." The three -strong group poignantly dedicated theaward to Mahlathini (SimonNkabinde), the gruff -voiced signerwho died last year and who accompa-nied the group on many of their great-est recordings over a 35 year career.

Joint ventureThe group also launched a new albumSebai Bai, a joint venture betweenFrance's Label Bleu and SouthAfrican label Gallo, which was alsoexhibiting and announcing plans forits 75th anniversary next year. "Ialways wanted to record the Queens

Official bodies boost showcase eventsOne of the most noticeable trends at this year'sWOMEX showcases was the increasing valuethat government -funded official bodies are now

placing on promoting ethnic musical talent in overseasmarkets.

One of the largest contingent among the showcasingacts was sponsored by the Canadian Council for Arts. Apacked main auditorium heard five aboriginal acts-thepow -wow drums of Whitefish Jnr,singer -songwriter Willie Dunn, fid-dler Calvin Volrath, Innuit rocksinger Lucie Idlout and the all -female Kanenhi:io. Sandra Bender, the CCA's marketing developmentofficer, said: "We came to WOMEXlast year as observers and foundthat European audiences regardedaboriginal music as important, sowe decided to go for it this year. It'snot a political agenda. We simply want to help theartists get exposure." A compilation CD Native ToCanada was circulated free to all delegates.

Also present in force was L'Agence Intergouvern-mentale de la Francophonie (AIEF), an official govern-

ment -level agency which represents 49 French-speakingstates around the world. The agency sponsored five con-ference sessions and seven showcasing artists, includingthe Malian kora virtuoso Ballake Sissoko and theFrench/Moroccan ensemble Sawt el Atlas who bothmade a considerable impact.

"We aim to give an idea of the scope of the multi -cul-tural French-speaking world that brings together all the

input from the various people thatare part of it," said AIEF directorRoger Dehaybe.

Although the British Council, funded by the UK Foreign Office, didnot sponsor a showcase, it hosted astand which acted as an umbrella fora large number of independentBritish operators. The Council alsolaunched 'New Routes: A World ofMusic From Britain', a publication

promoting the UK's increasingly multi -cultural range oftalent, from Talvin Singh and Nitin Sawhney to KateRushy and Eliza Carthy. The UK -based Nation Recordsshowcased three British -Asian acts in Charged,Hardkaur and Recycler.

on their own and I think this is theirstrongest recording since 1988's ParisSoweto," says manager/producerChristian Mousset, who doubles asartistic director of Label Bleu. "It cap-tures them in a natural setting with-out drum machines or computers."The album was released in France onOctober 30, and will be followed byGermany next month and the UK inthe new year.

Seligman's words about the inabil-ity of major labels to work worldmusic appeared to be endorsed by theabsence of Wicklow, the world musiclabel set up two years ago by BMGand Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains. The parent company unceremonious-ly closed the label earlier this yearbut three of the acts whose futureswere jeopardised as a result were rep-resented and pledging to continue inthe independent sector.

Ian Anderson, manager of theMalagasy roots band Tarika reportedthat after lengthy negotiations SoulMakkasar, the album shelved whenWicklow folded, will now be releasedin January on the group's own SakayRecords in both Europe andMadagascar. The Finnish bandVarttina, another former Wicklow act, played an impressive showcase whichwon many new friends while LuEdmonds, manager of Tuvan groupYat-Kha, announced a forthcomingEuropean tour for the former Wicklowsigning.

Success storyOne of the most satisfying successstories belonged to Tartit, from theSaharan desert in Mali. Last year theall -female group were just anotherhopeful unsigned world music act pre-senting their first WOMEX showcase. This year the German label Networkwas heavily promoting their debutalbum Ichichila, for Novemberrelease. "We saw them last year anddecided within ten minutes to signthem," said MD Christian Scholze."We did the deal there and then."

Next year's WOMEX will takeplace in Rotterdam from October 25-28, 2001. Applications for showcasepresentations must be submitted byJune 15.

ARTISTS & MUSIC

Dancegroovesby Gary Smith

SPECIAL PROJECTProject 2000's manic, junglist single Proceed is trulythe hybrid to beat all hybrids. A ragga intro rapidlygives way to a catchy, semi -spoken chorus followed bya sonorous, sub -operatic drop. Where the group havereally hit paydirt is by taking a leaf out of TheSpecials lexicon. This may be fast and furious musicbut it is shot through from beginning to end with popreferences and singalong moments.

AS GOOD AS IT GETSFeaturing two of the trance scene's biggest namesEternity (United/Netherlands) by Armin van Buurenand DJ Tiesto will sell by the bucketload on their

names alone. It is also, happily, aboutas good as trance gets. A rich, lush pro-duction, melody heaped upon melodyand the obligatory diva wailing some-where way back in the mix shouldensure some measure of airplay action.Whether it will make the journey from

dancefloor to chart is uncertain but Armin vanBuuren's Rising Star Edit is the version with the bestchance.

ORGANIC COMPOSTAmong all of Compost Records' releases this year theMinus 8 album Elysian Fields has been the one tocause the biggest international reaction. Attemptingto capitalise on this, Compost has released an EP ofremixes which includes a neat four -minute version ofthe act's most commercial track, Badman & Throbin'.A modern, soul number with multitudinous Stax/Voltreferences the song fair rocks along in a Respect style, helped by an inspired vocal performance from Billie-not THE Billie you understand-and a refreshinglyorganic production. Mathew "Dr. Rockit" Herbert'sversion of Cold Fusion provides yet more evidencethat Herbert is in a league all his own.

AMSTERDAM'S MIAMI VICEWith Kluster's My Love (Filtered Records/USA) prov-ing to be among the most sought - after records of theAmsterdam Dance Event, Miami -based SFP Recordsand its sub -imprints Filtered, Deep Touch,SoulGroove, Asphalt and Manga Beat are on anotherroll. Ain't Gonna by Brent Laurence featuringMaureen Parker on SoulGroove Records is also cur-rently shaping up to be a hit. The combination ofParker's melodramatic, Bassey-esque voice, a strongchorus and a warm, deep production is rightly causingmuch excitement with the European labels.

A new remix of a classic from last year could also bea surprise hit early in the new year. The Chicco Seccivs Black Legend mix of Wicked Phunker's JungleBoogie (Asphalt Records) retains the fast and furiouscharacter of the original but adds extra chorus vocalemphasis which should give the tune some crossoverlegs. Finally, from Manga Beat comes No Greater Loveby Noel W Sanger presents The Westbrook Project fea-turing Nicole Henry. NGA is a sizzling, deep soul num-ber with layer upon layer of bubbling synths thatcould be said to have a certain similarity to the trancesound. Henry's vocals add the soul element and alsogive the tune enough of a mainstream pop feel to makeit yet another crossover contender.

All new releases, biographies and photographs for con-sideration for inclusion in the Dance Grooves columnshould be sent direct to: Gary Smith, c/o. Roger de Lluria45 -3° -2, 08009 Barcelona, Spain. 1

That ain't no lady that's Modjo!by Gary Smith

While they may be "the band with no iden-tity," Modjo are also now a genuine cross -border sales and airplay phenomenon.

European sales of Lady (Hear MeTonight) (Barclay) havereached over 1.4 million, putting the song at num-ber one on M&M'sEurochart Hot 100. Therecord is now poised totake a crack at the USmarket this monththrough MCA in the formof a 12 -inch remix byHarry "Choo Choo"Romera.'

"The reaction fromradio was immediate anduniform," says Sound OfBarclay's Paris -basedproduct managerPhilippe Laugier. "The speed with which itentered the top 10 here was phenomenal."Indeed, not even France's notoriously slow -building singles chart could hold back theblanket enthusiasm for a song that hadalready caused a dancefloor buzz followingthe appearance of the first white labels inlate February.

Encouraged by that reaction, Barclayreleased the track to radio around the endof May and by early July Lady was in theupper reaches of the chart. "There's no bigsecret here," says French CHR network

NRJ's director of programming MichaelMagnin, "it's simply the quality of themusic."

The Modjo record has, undeniably, atouch of the ABBA-syndrome: "Not only isLady an exceptional song, it's also very effi-

cient," says Magnin. Bythat I mean that you lis-ten to it once and onceonly and it's stuck in yourhead."

The fact that the songwent straight onto highrotation at powerful sta-tions like NRJ is a reflec-tion of its cross -genre andcros sborder appeal."We're still playing thetrack four to five timesper day in primetime,"states Magnin. "It hasbeen on high rotation allsummer and, although it

meshed nicely with the summer atmos-phere, I believe it would have been a hitwhichever time of year it was released."

With the finishing touches being put tofollow-up single Chillin', Barclay'sLaugier is cautiously optimistic. "Chillin'is more dancefloor than Lady so it mighthave less crossover appeal," he admits."But the album-as yet untitled-has aworldwide release in late February, which,dt least in some territories, will coincidewith the third single-[also] untitledwhich is very pop."

Sisters doing it for themselvesby Sally Stratton

"Awesome", "s0000 cool" and "rocking" werehow young Australian duo Sister 2 Sisterdescribed their first impressions of goingon the road with Britney Spears.

It's the stuff that teenage dreams andrecord company campaigns are made of-atour that started in August taking in 11 USdates before crossing the Atlantic for a sixweek European tour. "We had to choosebetween doing our own tour in Australia ortouring the world with Britney," admitselder sister Christine Muscat, "and it's def-initely about gettinginternational andtouring the world. Wecan always go back toAustralia and see howthings go but we reallywant to get this shot inEurope."

"They have the per-fect opportunity toreach their targetaudience on theBritney' Spears tour,"says Mirelle Davis, head of international at the duo's UKrecord company Mushroom. "The band area priority for both Mushroom and Edel andwe are convinced that this tour will resultin media exposure across the board for thegirls and a repeat of their Australian suc-cess story"

Back home in Australia the act's debutalbum One, which was released in Europeon October 23, has already been certifiedgold with sales of over 50,000 and theyhave been nominated for two Aria awards.Their debut single Sister went double plat-

inum in Australia while their currentEuropean single What's A Girl To Doachieved gold status on the continent afterjust one day in the shops, thanks to hugesupport from radio.

In Portugal a performance on the top -rating lottery show-rather than a datewith Britney-was the focus of the duo'spromotional diary. "The [lottery] show isvery important for us at the radio station, because tomorrow everybody will ask forthe music that they've seen today on theTV," explains Miguel Oliveira, playlist co-ordinator at Informedia in Oporto and its

sister station Mundial. They A -listed Sister

(the Portugese single)in early October andinterviewed Sister 2Sister just before theirTV appearance forbroadcast the follow-ing day. By then thegirls were well on theirway to Italy for thenext night of the tour.

"When we came tothe UK for the first

time in February we did something likefive oresix regional radios a day," recalls 16year -old Sharon. "And if that's what ittakes to get this single going in Europe I'llgo to every radio station in Germany,France, Italy, Portugal. I'll go everywherebecause we really want to get people tohear our music. It's not a case of someonesaying 'here's a song, here's some clothesgirls, go out and shake your butts.' We'reyoung, we're singers and we're songwritersand we want our music to just come acrossas it is, very natural."

The pick of the week's new singlesby Miriam Hubner & Siri Stavenes Dove

DAFT PUNKONE MORE TIME(Virgin)Release date: November 13French act Daft Punk'sbreakthrough came with the 1997album Homework. The classic dancetrack Around The World off the

album contributed to placing French electronica inthe spotlight. Since then, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-

Manuel De Homen Christo, who make up the Paris-

based duo, have done remixes for acts such asChemical Brothers and Gabrielle, as well as workingon their own material.

One More Time is a taster from the group'sforthcoming album. With the track, the French actseem to have made themselves a little more accessibleto the mainstream audience comparted with earlierreleases. The tone is light and upbeat, utilising Cher -

like vocoder technology on the voice of New York DJand producer Romanthony. Consequently, the trackhas been picked up by radio stations of variousformats across Europe, taking it to number 20 in theEuropean Radio Top 50. "It seems to be a single thatpeople either love or hate, especially in the danceworld," says Simon Sadler, head of music at London -

based dance station Kiss 100. "It's a feel -good houserecord [and] a good radio record." MH

STAN

(Aftermath/Interscope)Release Date: November 27Angry young man MarshallMathers aka Eminem akaSlim Shady has risen tofame against all traditional

marketing rules. An expert at making enemies,Eminem is just as famous for having been sued byhis own mother as he is for getting arrested forviolent behaviour and being accused of spreadinganti -gay and sexist messages with his music. InStan, the controversial white rappper urges hisfans not to take him too seriously. The track sitson a soundtrack of rain and thunder and featuresthe vocals of Dido. Her melodic contributionsoftens the monotomy of Eminem's voice readingout letters from the artist's "biggest fan" who istalking about killing his girlfriend. The trackends with a reply from Eminem, saying thatStan should stop being so angry and seekcounselling before he hurts himself or someoneelse. Julian Wharan, head of music atBirmingham CHR-station 96.4 FM-BRMB inthe UK, restricts Stan to evening play. "He is acontroversial but talented artist," he says ofEminem. "You either love him or hate him, there's no middle ground. So it's a bit difficult togive him mainstream airtime. We've played mostof his singles, but mainly on evening shows andthe chart show." SSD

Dance BeatThe weekly dance chart comment by Harald Roth

No surprises at the top of the Dance Trgtxx chartagain this week, as Modjo's Lady (Hear MeTonight) (Sound Of Barclay) holds out for its sev-enth week and hence becomes the longest -stayingFrench record at number one. It is followedclosely by Spiller's Groovejet (Fruit Of TheMoon/Dreambeat), which has been stalled at

number two for two weeks now. This week sees only one mover into

the chart's top 10, with Paul van Dyk'sWe Are Alive (Vandit) jumping from 11to six. The track is getting a lot of at-tention in Britain and Germany, and italso debuts in Hungary this week.

Azzido Da Bass' Dooms Night (ClubTools) may be over a year old, but it's

been remixed and is again a big mover on thechart, sprinting from 47 to 11 this week. Britain,Germany, Belgium, Norway and Hungary are thetrack's best markets.

Daft Punk are hoping to do it One More Time(Virgin). The act's Around The World held thenumber one spot for four weeks in mid -1997, andnow the new single One More Time is lookinglikely to follow suit. New at number 13 this week, the track has received support from DJs inFrance, the UK, Germany and Denmark. Andonce the Benelux territories and the rest of Scan-dinavia catch the vibe, the track should make adent in the top three.

German -signed dance outfit Ultra's Free (TimeUnlimited, a label of German indie UCMG)climbs from 44 to 26, while fellow German actATC's My Heart Beats Like A Drum (Kingsize)jumps 43-32. Meanwhile, two Belgian tracks aremaking significant progress up the chart; Road-runner Arcade's Shere imprint enjoys a big hitwith Minimalistix's Struggle For Pleasure, whichgoes up from 36 to 27, and The Moon's Blow TheSpeakers (BYTE Progressive) climbs 49-36. Sand-wiched between them is another Belgian track,Antler Subway signing Milk Inc. with Land OfThe Living, up 39-33.

Finally, US soul vocalist Jill Scott's Getting' InThe Way (Epic) is enjoying a lot of support in Eu-rope at the moment, and looks likely to enter theDance Traxx chart in the weeks to come.

BMG shake-up means return of GassnerBMG Entertainment in July 1998, beatingGassner who was another contender for the job.Gassner, who was Dornemann's heir apparent, resigned at the end of 1999, 18 months after Zel-nick was made his boss, following a series of con-flicts with Zelnick.

Sources claim that the changes at the top of thecompany were the result of a strategic disagreementbetween the two executives and Thomas Middel-hoff, chairman/CEO of parent com-pany Bertelsmann, on the controlover BMG's online strategy, espe-cially with regards to e -commerce.

The alliance with Napster-towhich Zelnick and Domemannwere reportedly opposed initially-seems to have precipitated the out-come of the crisis. Sources say bothmen were arguing about the grow-ing importance Bertelsmann's e -commerce division BeCG, and itschief executive Andreas Schmidt,in the distribution of music.

One well -placed senior compa-ny source says it's only half-true tosay that Middelhoff and Zelnick fell out over Nap-ster. "They fell out because Strauss and some ofhis key people wanted to keep Napster as part ofBMG. They wanted digital distribution to formpart of BMG's operation, not other Bertelsmannoperations. That's what caused the rift-not thatDomemann was going. Everybody knew that. Thatwas only a question of timing."

A senior BMG source also suggests that Mid-delhoff was less than impressed with the handlingof various recent crises, especially the departureof Arista president Clive Davis-which ended upwith BMG bankrolling Davis' new label JRecords-and the relationship with Jive, which isdistributed in the US by BMG.

"Dornemann wanted to leave," says the source,"but there were a couple of issues dealt with byZelnick which precipitated the outcome. Middel-hoff spoke to a lot of people, concluded that it wasa bad choice and corrected it."

The source adds that the planned changes, which will see BeCG take over control of the mailorder club and several other assets currentlyunder BMG's wing, were not popular with Dome-mann and Zelnick, who saw them as a reductionof their power. For a newcomer like Gassner, this

situation could prove easier to accept.Speaking to M&M, Gassner declined to com-

ment on the sequence of events leading to hisappointment, but says he plans "to focus onmusic." "My goal is to improve the performancesof the company in all areas," he says, "especiallyin A&R, artist development, marketing and prof-itability."

Sources close to Gassner confirm that he hassigned a five-year contract startingon January 1. Gassner, who is 57,will be hit by Bertelsmann's retire-ment regulations forcing people toretire at 60. However, according tosources, Gassner will step downfrom Bertelsmann's board at theage of 60 but will continue to runthe music division until the end ofhis contract.

Gassner also confirmed that hewould step down immediately aschairman of the advisory board ofGerman independent company edel.He was also board member of Ham-burg -based music video producer

Me Myself & Eye (MME), and of Internet start-upcompany Ecapella.

Gassner says he will take time to sit down withpeople in the company and discuss the issues atstake before making any changes. He confirmsthat he is not going to appoint a new head of inter-national and will be heading the US company aswell.

Gassner says he has been overwhelmed withmessages from BMG staffers and from people inthe industry. "It made me feel very good for awhile, and then I started to think about all thethings that needed to be done," he jokes.

The MD of a BMG affiliate company tells M&Mthat "it is great to have at the top of the company areal music man. Strauss had great skills, and gavethe company a clear Internet strategy, but we werenot sure that he was that interested in music."

The executive adds: "A change at the top of abig company such as BMG is always a difficultperiod. But this time, there is someone who knowsthe company's ins and outs, and who has probablyappointed 80% of all the executives working there. This is a sign of stability. It also sends the messagethat the Internet is for Bertelsmann, and BMG'srole is to produce, promote and market music."

Capital seeks partners continued from page 3

O'Driscoll says that these potential partners couldrange from a European company looking to get intoradio for the first time to an established groupingsimilar in size to Capital. He adds that Capital couldwork with one partner across the whole of Europe, oralternatively seek different partners in differentcountries. However, he says that they will only con-sider getting involved in overseas projects of a cer-tain size. "There's no point in a company like Capitalowning something like the third station in Warsawor the fourth station in Prague because the [manage-ment] time in terms of the prospective return is justtoo small."

O'Driscoll admits that, in the past, Capital hasn'tbeen particularly proactive in pursuing Europeanopportunities. "We're pretty proud of what we'veachieved and where we've got to in the UK market, but we think it's time now that we started knockingon some doors and seeing other like-minded peopleout there ."

One potential partner for Capital in Europe couldbe the Paris -based NRJ Group. Jean -Paul Baude-croux, chairman of NRJ Group, reveals that therewere discussions between the two broadcasters acouple of years ago, but without follow-up.

Baudecroux says a merger between Capital andNRJ could be "interesting" but he believes thatNRJ's stock is undervalued compared to Capital's."NRJ is valued at Ffr 22 billion on the French stockmarket and Capital is valued at something morethan Ffr 10 billion. I don't think that reflects the realstrength of each group," he says.

Baudecroux also believes that Capital lacks aclear strategy. "Capital, as with all UK radio groups,is protected by regulation which is good to them-their stations can prosper without direct competitionfrom stations with similar formats. At the risk ofsounding arrogant, if we were allowed into the UKmarket, they would have some reasons to worry."

Mansfield's speech to the NAB came three daysahead of Capital's results for the year ending Sep-tember 30, which, excluding new media ventures, showed pre-tax profits up 11.2% to £44.1 million( 73.5m). Revenues were up by 17.8% to £123.9 mil-lion, although this figure includes Capital's recentacquisitions of Border Radio and Beat 106. Capitalsays that its associated companies, principally recordlabel Wildstar and commercial radio news providerIRN, contributed £2.3 million to group profitabilitythis year, well ahead of expectations.

Elton pulls out all the stops for live albumSquare Garden, John's favouritevenue, is rush -released on November13 by Mercury. The label has pulledout all the production stops for whatit's claiming is the fastest live releaseof all time-with an initial shipmentof 1.2 million copies.

The 17 -track set features a dozenperformances by John and his bandas well as appearances by Kiki Dee,Ronan Keating, Bryan Adams,Anastacia and Mary J Blige-all ofwhom were handpicked by the Eng-lish superstar to help reinterpretsome of his classics.

"I wanted to make this event full offriends," says John. His reunion withDee for Don't Go Breaking My Heartwas so well -received that it was movedto an encore slot 24 hours later, andthe track has just been promo'd tointernational radio by Mercury.

The pair have also joined forces fora promotional tour in Europe whichstarted at the Premios Ondas Awardsin Barcelona last Monday (November6), where they performed the song andwhere John was also presented with alifetime achievement award. Later in

the week they appeared at ZDF's DasGoldner Lenkrad show in Germany, recorded a series of national TV newsinterviews in France, and John wasdue to play a Paris gig at the Olympiaon Friday (November 10), followed byan appearance on Italian TV Rai 2show Quelli Che Il Calcio two days lat-er, before beginning a European tourproper. His schedule is all the moreremarkable since he is due to make anappearance at London's High Court inhis action against city accountantsPricewaterhouseCoopers.

On Sunday (November 12), the eveof the album's release, BBC1 TV in theUK was set to air an interview specialwith chat show host Michael Parkin-son, followed by highlights of the NewYork concerts with additional behind -the -scenes documentary footage. Thatshow is also being placed internation-ally, and Mercury director of interna-tional marketing Sian Thomas addsthat a further 30 -minute documen-tary about the concert and the mak-ing of the record is also available.

John is recording a new studioalbum with his longtime lyricist

Bernie Taupin for release in 2001,when he also plans to tour again withBilly Joel. Meanwhile, he makes nosecret that most of the album consistsof performances from the secondshow. "The pressure of doing a livealbum is such that you have twonights to record it, and the first nightI had lots of technical problems. Thesecond night was our last chance toget it right and I told everybody inthe band just go out and have fun."

On Sunday October 22, the dayafter the second concert, veteran pro-ducer Phil Ramone started work withengineer Frank Filipetti on thealbum, knowing that they had onlyuntil the following Thursday, October26, to complete the mix. There wasfurther symmetry in Ramone'sinvolvement, as he had produced the11-17-70 live album that helpedlaunch John into the Americanstratosphere 30 years ago.

"It's sort of an anniversary for mewith him," says Ramone. "When Iwas an engineer struggling in NewYork in the early '70s, I did this livealbum. We spent $120 for the

continued from page 3

crowd-on cheap bottled wine-and Ithink we paid the band whateverscale was...but it was one of the greatnights. He's so highly touted betweenus, the people who work with him."

Trevor James, programme con-troller at CHR Chiltern FM in Bed-ford, England, reiterates the widely -held programming view that livematerial is not a natural fit for day-time radio. "It's still a bit of a no-goarea," he says. "Mind you, there havebeen times in the past when it'sworked, such as when GeorgeMichael played with Queen [on thechart -topping Five Live EP in 1993]."James adds that since the album con-tains wall-to-wall Elton John hits, there may be an avenue for it onGWR's Classic Gold network.

Mercury's Sian Thomas refutes theidea that live albums are traditionallypoor sellers, citing two other recentsuccesses in the Universal family. "Itfollows in the tradition of the BeeGees' multi -million -selling One NightOnly and Metallica's S&M, which soldincredibly well," she says. "If thematerial is there, they will do well."

Rumours of a take-over of EMI by Bertelsmannhave surfaced again this week in the wake of thechanges at the top of BMG (see story, front page).Although both sides claim that talks have notbeen initiated, sources believe Bertelsmann'schief executive Thomas Middelhoff is lookingat this option. There were indications that one ofthe first tasks of incoming BMG president/CEORudi Gassner would be to broker a deal withEMI, but sources close to Gassner tell Hotlinethat he'll focus on the day to day operations of therecord company, leaving Middelhoff to investigateEMI. "Middelhoff will deal with it-he's a greatnegotiator," says the source.

The French radio industry is awaiting theresults of the latest Mediametrie ratings sweepon November 14 with even greater anticipationthan usual. Rumours at last week's NAB Europeconference in Berlin suggest that the country'smarket -leader, full -service station RTL, is set tolose some audience. If confirmed, the drop inratings would be a blow for the new chiefexecutive Stephan Duhamel, who implementedsome radical programming changes in September.

Nigel Elderton, the European vice presidentof Peermusic, has been elected deputy chairman(publisher) of the UK's performing rights societyPR$, effective January 1, 2001. He will becomeone of the two elected deputies to PRS chairman,Andrew Potter.

Virgin Media -owned rock station OiiiFM/Paris is launching a rock community portal,Ouirock.com, on November 17. The site willinclude three Internet -only side -channels,OuiClassic, Ouilndie and OuiMetal.

Richard Ogden (pictured), who left SonyMusic in September to set up his ownmanagement company, was last weekendspotted in Berlin interviewing people tomanage its affiliate in Germany. Aftersecuring Bomfunk MC's, Ogden is alsobelieved to be close to signing his secondact, understood to originate from Italy.

EMI Norway managing directorMichael Manasse is to move from Osloto Stockholm to fill the newly created managingdirector's position at Edel Records Sweden. Thelabel is currently run by general manager JonasThulin. Manasse, a former product manager, marketing manager and marketing director forEMI in Sweden, will report to Edel's London -based VP of Northern Europe Helge Trilck.

Independent radio group LV&Co suffered ablow last week when it was denied the acquisitionof local station Alpes 1 by French broadcastingauthority the CSA. Although LV&Co guaranteedthat they would not change the station's formator its amount of local content, the CSA ruledagainst the acquisition of a local station by anational operator.

Finally_ more than a few delegates present atthe NAB Europe conference in Berlin last weekinterpreted Capital Radio chief executiveDavid Mansfield's speech (see story, front page)as an invitation to "come and get us." ButCapital's group head of internationaldevelopment Donnach O'Driscoll assuresHotline that the speech "wasn't in any waysaying that we are for sale. Absolutely not."
