OnepossibleexplanationforthedeclineoftheFTESduring2012-13isrelatedtotheintroductionofDr.Maz(commercialmusic)andDr.Mayfield(musictheory)asfaculty.Dr.Mazreportedthatmanystudentswhohadintendedtoenrollincommercialmusiccoursesdecidedtodroponcetheylearnedthatthepreviousprofessorwasnolongerteachingthecourses.Dr.Mayfieldalsoreportedthatheradvancedtheoryclasseshadextremelylowenrollmentandthatmanystudentsoptednottotaketheadvancedclassesafterdiscoveringthattheworkloadwouldbesignificantlymorethananticipated. However,aftertheinitial“shock”ofhavingnewfacultyrunthecourses,thedepartmenthasbeensteadilyclimbingupwards.Thegrowthofthecommercialmusicprogramhaspositivelyimpactedtheenrollmentinmusictheoryclassesoverthepastthreeyears.ThegrowthofmusictheoryhaspromptedthedepartmenttooffertwosectionsofMUS180(MusicTheoryI)andMUS181(MusicTheoryII)inordertoaccommodatethe55-60studentswishingtotakethecourses.ThedepartmentexpectsFTESdatatoimproveduring2016-17.
