I think the target audience for this song is late teens – young adults because I think in the song’s lyrics he goes on about the problems with being a late teen / young adult nowadays. I also think that the video is aimed at the same audience because it’s just him with his guitar and them type of videos seem to be popular.

Lyrics (Meaning Implied?)

The lyrics to the chorus are:

“You and I nursing on a poison that never stungOur teeth and lungs are lined with the scum of it

Free and young and we can feel none of it”

I think in the chorus he is speaking about what it’s like to be young and the problems with the world nowadays the lyric “You and I nursing on a poison that never stung”. This lyric is saying that people are being brought up and have grown up in a world where there is so much hate for a certain group of people or religion just on the chance that something might happen or has happened but many years ago. He’s saying that we are trying to comeback from a problem that has either never happened or happened so long ago that the last generation won’t even remember.

“Free and young and we can feel none of it”. I think this lyric is saying that we are supposed to be free to live our lives how we want to but we can’t because we’ve either been brought up to care too much about what other people think of us or being in fear of how the things we do in our lives or how were born will upset somebody we’ve never met and being in fear of never being treated equally just because of who we are. We are being brought up in a world where they are pretending to be so big on trying to make everyone equal when really no one can seem to fathom the idea that people are different and people do have different views and if everybody was the same and thought the same the world will be a lot more boring.

Tempo The tempo of the song is slow but on the chorus it’s faster than the verses.

Genre I think the genre of the music video is sort of an indie mixed with an easy listening type of video. I think it is an easy listening type of music video because it’s just somebody stood in the middle of a dark room singing with a guitar with nothing else around him

I think the video is very similar to other music videos of this genre because of these reasons, another reason I think he video is similar to other easy listening ones is because like many other easy listening videos it is performance based. This means where the singe is singing the song to the camera all the way through the video.

Camera Technique The video uses mid-shots. It only uses them to show Hozier and the drummer the video uses close ups for the other people performing.

Another camera technique used in the video is a long shot. This is used to show the person playing the drums. The video doesn’t really show anyone else in the long shot shots.

In the video it only uses one two shot. This shot is used right near the end and it shows the singer and the person playing the piano behind him.

Music Video Analysis

The video also uses some high angle shots of the people playing the instruments. Some of the high angle shots being used are also used whilst tracking. Whenever the camera shows a high angle shot it moves downwards slowly.

Editing The video uses fade in and fade out. This is only used in some parts of the video.

Use of Digital Effects The digital effect used in this video is colour correction. They have used this to make things either abit more clearer or abit darker
