Lyrics of the songI’m turning myself in

I've been a jealous friendFeels like I'm always

sinkingOh woah

Just like you used to sayIt all might be okayBut now I'm lost and

thinkingOh woah

Maybe you got to my head!

Maybe you got to my head!

Maybe you got to my head!

Yeah oh!Yeah oh!Yeah oh!

I miss those late night drives

With you stuck on my mind

But now the ground is sinking

Oh woahLike rain on sun-soaked

daysI never thought you'd

strayAnd now I can't stop

thinking

Maybe you got to my headMaybe you got to my headMaybe you got to my head

Yeah! Oh!Yeah! Oh!Yeah! Oh!Yeah! Oh!

Maybe you got to my head!

(Yeah! Oh! Yeah oh!)Maybe you got to my

head!(Yeah! Oh! Yeah oh!)Maybe you got to my

head!(Yeah! Oh!)

Yeah ohh!

Maybe you got to my headMaybe you got to my headMaybe you got to my head

Maybe you got to my head

Meaning of the song and relation to videoThe video’s visual imagery is a disjuncture from the lyrics ,

however the music video relates to the nutty, and silly lyrics and music of this song.• The video completely ignores the main lyrics of this song,

the song is about the singer confessing that he is upset about his girlfriend leaving their relationship • The first line of the lyrics is “I’m tuning my self in” – the

singer is about to confess• “I never thought you'd stray” suggest he didn’t expect for

them to break up• At the chorus “Maybe you got to my head” is amplified by

the weird video of him jumping on his bed suggesting he’s become crazy/ bored.

The band are currently in California, United States however they formed in 2011 in Oslo, Norway and they are within the Rock genre. The band consists of Van Pierszalowski (vocalist and guitarist), Brian DaMert (guitarist), Greg Sellin (bass), Andrew Wales (drums), and Sara DaMert (Keys).

The band is currently in the Vagrant Records and TBD Records and have been featured in NYLON Magazine Band Crush, however they are not yet well known.

How does this relate to there genre?

The band is within the rock genre however this song does not have the usual codes and conventions of rock music instead it follows the conventions of pop music videos.

• Usually rock music videos have fast paced editing, which this has.• The band is seen wearing black clothing from time to time. • You’ll also notice that they are holding electric guitars illustrating

there rock genre• However the video is quite bright in terms of costume, lightings, and

props which is not typical in rock music videos.• The video is performance base which pop and rock music video tend

to be• The lyrics of the song is about a relationship/ breakup which is

common in pop music videos than in rock• The video is also fun which is typical for pop but not in rock videos

however it does show them destroying the bed which could suggest there recklessness.

Camerawork

Throughout the video the camera stay still in stedicam so thereofore mise en scene and editing had to be the key component of interest. The whole video is in mid-long shot

Page 8: Music video inspiration – ‘got to my head

Editing

There is frequent use of overlays and dissolves, this is usually used in the slower verses and jump cuts on the faster parts of the song

Page 9: Music video inspiration – ‘got to my head

EditingThe editing is in beat with the music, usually in the chorus there would be a quick flashes of different colour filters which could suggest the fun and happy tone of this song

Page 10: Music video inspiration – ‘got to my head

EditingVarious other editing has been used to make this video look more appealing

Split screen has been used here to cast the shadow

Upside down screen to make the video seem crazier and weirder

Mise En Scene

Although the video is limited in mise en scene it makes good use of it and also the mise en scene and editing is main draw of interest for this music video.

• The set mimics a bedroom hosting a slumber party• Costume of a panda and a devil, the devil could refer to the

line “maybe you got to my head” and the panda may have been used for a random purpose to cast humour to the video.

• Use of drums, electric guitars, key boards, etc to convey the rock genre

• The facial expression of the characters are quite mute however they are jumping around partying making there actions eccentric.

• The lighting is bright which constant throughout the however the coloured filters also contribute the brightness of the video.

Why this video interested me?

The reason I like this music video is because of the editing and use of mise en scene, it also quite humorous. The camera remains the same throughout the video but due to the fun concept and quick editing in time with the beat of the music it makes the video seem exciting. The disjuncture of this music video is also quite interesting as the video itself relates to the song title ‘got to my head’ but completely ignores the whole lyrics.

For this video I want to take the use of editing, mise en scene and also the abstract theme and apply it on my own video. I plan on editing my music video in a way that will make it look stuttery, and will also want involve several jump cuts similar to this music video
