Music 10 Weekly CENTS Volume 1, No. 16 BOWLING GREEN AND EVROS NUMBER ONE IN TORONTO Toronto: Are the Everly Brothers still on top of the pop scene? Can they push themselves back up to the million seller record bracket? Will the new generation accept the Kings of the 1957 pop era? It doesn't really matter if the present generation of record buyer accepts the sound of the Everly Brothers or not, but they will. Their current Warner Bros single "Bowling Green" took off in Canada before the major outlets in the U.S. realized the potential of this great disc. The disc, which is number one at both Toronto radio stations, and number 39 on the RPM 100 (national standing) has brought out Toronto's young sophis- ticates and created a whole new breed of singles buyer. George Offer, Gen- eral Manager of Apex Records, who distributes the Everlys disc was almost overwhelmed at the fantastic response that the release created. It has been difficult to keep the re- cord in stock. When Monday June 5th came around it was evident to Embassy manager Claude Gilbert that he had bargained well at $6500 for the week engagement and perhaps the Everlys felt they accepted to readily. The reason was the capacity house, which must be close to 500, and with booze and cover, the take must have been pretty cool and besides there must have been another 1000 lined up out- side waiting for the second show. When The Everlys hit the stage, it was like a madhouse. The gals who were teenagers back in 1957, had been off the screaming bit for a long time, and it took a little practice and a little nerve (booze) to gargle out a welcome to the some- what surprised Southern, now,Gentle- men. The Everlys have,a very soft and subtle southern manner about them and were in command of the situation from the beginning. They didn't offend their grown-up audience (the oldest must have been 30) with the Beatles, Beach Boys, Byrds or any of the preferred sounds of the teenyboppers. They concentrated on hits, mostly their own and many of the hits made famous by the giants of ten years ago. But The Everlys create those hits with the "in" sounds of today. They have three sidemen travelling with them. An electric guitar man, a bass man and a drummer. Are the Everly Brothers still on top of the pop scene? Can they push themselves back up to the million seller record bracket? Will the new generation accept the Kings of the 1957 pop era? The answers all have to be YES, at least here in Toronto, and they've got six days of solidly packed and screaming Embassy crowds to prove it as well as the hottest selling record in many a moon. MAMAS & PAPAS TO LEAD THE PARADE OF STARS INTO TORONTO'S MAPLE LEAF GARDENS Toronto: The Maple Leaf Gardens are set for a summer -full of frantic pop activity. Well, do we get letters, or do we getletters? After my remark about that otherToronto station not playing any Red Leafrecords, I almost felt as important as Ellie. But listen, they don't care. chart (which is indicative of the nationalpicture) they dug up a Spencer Davis Groupversion of "Somebody Help Me" and put it ontheir "Battle". You know what? Somehow,The Spencer Davis Group won. I wonder ifthis Canadian radio station would considerpitting the Canadian disc against the Britishone? Seems kinda fair, doesn't it?

There's been some Canadian actionover at the Phonodisc camp. That great groupfrom Ottawa, The Townsmen, have anotherdisc out on Regency. It's called "He's InTown". Jimmy Paris has a single going forhim on Star Shot entitled "Toronto". DannyCoughlin gathered himself 35 Stratford kidsand cut one of his own tunes "This Is MyCountry" and "I Love My Country".

Winnipeg's Fifth came into Torontothe first part of the year and cut a session. Then they seemed to drop out of sight untiljust this week when they showed up with

what could be a big one for them. It's onLondon, and the title is "Yesterdays Today",and the flip is "Something You've got".

Hey, you know who called me longdistance, the other day? No, silly, on thetelephone, Jesse Young of that fabulous

a smash gig at the Coliseumin Ottawa with 7 local bands and Jesse saysthese Ottawa cats are great, great, great. Soafter the Coliseum they moved into Le Hibou, where all the great talent play when they go toOttawa. Andy Nagy, he's a groovy cat wholooks after the big stars for Rca Victor, sug-gests that Jesse give Canada a call, and thattakes us back to the front of the story. Jesseused to be a single -o, you know. He was afolk singer, and he's played the Riverboatand Purple Onion, in Toronto and The Esta-blishment in Winnipeg and even had an albumout, on Capitol and one on Mercury. So, yousee when The Youngbloods got together, they

had experience. There's Jesse, on lead, JerryCorbitt does his bit on harmonica and guitar,Joe Bauer is the drummer and Banana, that'shis name, he happens with the electric pianoand also plays guitar. Their first big break-through came with "Grizzly Bear" and thencame their album, which I'm not crazy abouttheir album cover, but in this case you can'tjudge the music by its cover. Well, anyway, they've got another one ready but they'redoing the album cover themselves. They'rephotographers as well, you know. Well, backto Ottawa, but not for long. After their en-gagement at Le Hibou, they charteredaplanefor Cleveland where they were taping a bitfor the "Up Beat" TVer, which is seen at1 PM over Channel 2, WGR, for Upper Canadaviewers. Don't know when they'll be shown, but I'll pass it on as soon as I get the word."Up Beat" is produced by our old buddy, DonWebster, who started the CHCH "Dance Party",you know.

WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?Twenty-nine acts will make up the

largest gathering of recording artists everheld. The event will take place June 16 thruJune 18 in Monterey, California. People per-forming include The Mamas and Papas, TheBeach Boys, The Paupers, The Association,Johnny Rivers, The Byrds, Simon and Garfun-kel, The Buffalo Springfield, Dionne Warwick,The Who (from England) and many, many otherfine acts.

I hope The Beach Boy's suit againstCapitol Records is settled soon. The groupapparently charges that the company has notpaid all the royalties from their past records.Until the courts decide, new releases by TheBeach Boys are being held back.

LOVE, a Hollywood group that made alot of noise a year ago with "My Little RedBook" and "7 And 7 Is" is now made up ofseven talented musicians. I wonder how they

make money? The knack, Capitol recording artists

are the United States' answer to Toronto'sCounts. In their act they imitate and reproducethe sounds of many big stars in the musicworld.

Psychedelic posters are the "in" wayof advertising dances. You have to look twiceto be able to make out the lettering on theseeye-catching signs./There is no official re-

cord chart in California. Each music storehas their own listings as well as most radiostations./Stereo tape cartridges for cars arevery big here. Many new tracks are releasedon tapes at the same time as the albums. Also, more and more of the golden albumsare being issued as tape cartridges./45 RPMdiscs will soon be released in stereo. A&MRecords (as reported in RPM) will start offthe experiment./Single records cost $1.00 butyou get a good deal on albums. Each week alarge department store chain puts five newlyreleased albums on sale. These cost $1.99 formono and $2.79 for stereo. Eaton's or Simp-

son's should try to match this offer./Canadianbands - consider yourselves lucky. Bands per-forming here get the undesired assistance ofthe audience who bring along their tambourinesto try to help out. You can hardly hear thesong when this happens./Canadian laws re-garding teenagers are not that strict. In LosAngeles, teens under 18 aren't allowed todance in a club and the 10 PM curfew makesit illegal for them to "Hang around" afterthat time.

San Francisco is becoming a boomingbase of the recording industry. New soundsexploding come from groups such as CountryJoe and The Fish, Moby Grape, Big Brotherand The Holding Company and Quick MessengerService. How can you forget those names?Page 4 RPM Music Weekly

Don't you just hate when someguy pretending to know all aboutthe record business tells youhow great a record is and youbuy it and hate every groove onthe dam thing? Well don't go andhang out the crepe dearies, justbecause the Grateful Dead arehere. I dig their sound, but ifyou don't like the weird psyche-delic sounds, then just look atthe cover and eat your heart out.Just for that I'm not even gonnatell you what's on the album, butthere's a cut that's almost sixminutes long and one just overten minutes. Interested?? Oh,what you're missing.WARNER BROS. - 1689

Well, I thought I had a scoop, butnow I find that everybody and hisdisc jockey is picking this album. You got your first taste of Jerrywith the release of the single,"My Girl Josephine" and boy yougot a whole lotta talent going onwith this package. Besides, youget twelve cuts. If you dig FatsDomino, you'll eat up everygroove on this album. Remember"When My Dreamboat ComesHome"? "Let The Four WindsBlow" and Marty Robbins bighit "Singing The Blues". Re-member a guy name of ElvisPresley? Got married didn't he?He did "Don't Be Cruel" and sodoes Jerry.HI - 12038

Now whoever heard of a namelike Engelbert Humperdinck? Well, try a couple of million on forsize. That's just about how manysingles Hump sold of "ReleaseMe", and whatta ya know here itis on this album. That's the titleof this album so that's why "Re-lease Me" is on the album. Whatdo you expect, eleven other hits?Come to listen to it, that's whatyou got. I guess the British aren't"hip" to the cut -back in sidesper album yet. Imagine, twelvecuts, and they're all great, great, great, and I can't think of any-thing more to say. Besides it'slate.PARROT - 61012

Remember the fat wonderful world ofJoey Reynolds? Well forget it, he ain't fat nomore. Joey was one of Canada's favouriteradio personalities, even though he wasn'twith a Canadian radio station. He was withWKBW, in Buffalo, which had a fifty thousandwatt ((clear chant e) signal. They picked himup in Ottawa, Montreal, throughout the Mari-times and Upper Canada as well as 14 Statesof his own country. He used to play Canadianrecords, as a matter of fact, more than anytwo Canadian stations put together. He called

RPM Music Weekly is to undergo acomplete revamping over the nextfour weeks. This week, the finnGroovyart, started on a project toredesign and modernize the entire"look" of RPM Music Weekly. Fromthe heading and logo design to thetype and column design, RPM willhave a facelifting.

For the past three years,Groovyart, have been behind theappearance of RPM and the RPM 100.This week you will see new featuresand a new concept in RPM. The

change will be gradual, but is beingdone with a look toward the futureand the possible expansion to a 16page weekly. Included in the plans isa feature that would list all new re-leases by record companies, eachweek, and a full page of LP reproduc-tions. The current radio page wouldbe enlarged to two pages and wouldfeature more photographs of radioactivities. Additional features wouldcover the Canadian TV music sceneand ad agency production news.

An increased interest in RPMby Canadian film and theatre peoplehas caused us to look into the inclu-sion of news in these areas as well.

In the three years that RPMhas been published, the interest inthe magazine has grown to such anextent that today RPM is not only theoldest consistent music weekly inCanada but also the most widely cir-culated national hornblower for theCanadian music industry throughoutthe world.

Mathes' ReturnToronto: Johnny Mathis will open atThe O'Keefe Centre June 19 for a oneweek engagement. He will be bring-ing with him a brand new show, fea-turing a vocal group known as OurYoung Generation. This talentedyoung group of performers accompanyJohnny throughout his entire show andsupply him with superb backing onhis popular numbers in cludin g "M aria"and "The Sweetheart Tree". Theyalso take 20 to spotlight themselvesand to give a breather to the star, who is known to work himself intonear exhaustion with every performance

Preachers, in action at The SharkeBarre, in The Dardanella Resort Inn.

Mr. Petty also found time todrop into the RPM offices to meetthe staff. Plans have also been setfor Mr. Petty to sit in on a sessionat RCA Victor studios. The session,a commercial, will be produced byCanada's top record producer, StanKlees, along with the country's lead-ing arranger, Ben McPeek and willfeature one of Toronto's top groups,The Yeomen.

Stu Mitchell, one of ThePreachers, has just had his latestNorman Petty Production "CastingMy Spell" and "Acid", released inthe U.S. on Kapp. No release datehas been setFrench Canadians, frogs, and they loved him. When he left WKBW he apparently nailed apair of his size 14 shoes to the door of thestation manager's office with a note that read,"fill these baby". Joey's down in Hartfordand he's coming up this weekend to visitCanada at the Fun Farm, in Whitby. Maybe Ican get a couple of pix of the new Joey. Ifanyone could have a successful movin' andgroovin' television show, it would have to beJoey Reynolds. He would be like another"Sunday" for theCBC.

I guess I should start by telling youabout Ellie Greenwich. She's getting so muchattention lately. Her latest (or is it first)single was produced by genius producer BobCrewe and the record company is promotingand publicizing the record to such an extentthat Ellie will surely crop up with a hit.Ellie herself is already well established as asongwriter and has put her hand to such tunesas "Leader Of The Pack", "Hanky Panky",and "Chapel Of Love".

Engelbert Humperdinck was around fora long time in England before "Release Me"shot to the top of the charts. A name changeis what did it. The new name made Engelberta talking point, and his great record began tobe noticed. His LP of "Release Me" has justbeen released.

The new single by the Buckinghams is"Mercy Mercy Mercy" and should be gettingairplay just as you read this.

A new group called the Moby Grape isgetting the star treatment and could be thebig group out of the San Francisco Hippyscene. They're releasing an album and fivesingles, all at the same time.

The Hollies new single is "Carrie

II A New Contest

Anne" and will be released in Canada byCapitol.

Whatever happened to the Left Banke?Well, they have a new single out that looksgood called "She May Call You Up Tonight".

Remember when Elvis did "Love MeTender" in his first movie? Percy Sledge hasjust released this number on a single andyou'll hear it done R&B. Stations dig Sledgeso it could get a lotta airplay.

The songwriting team of Boyce andHart have come out with what could be awinner on the A&M label. Deck is called "OutAnd About" (which Canadians will pronounce,"Oot And Aboot").

Jefferson Airplane have a number onehit and I thought you might like to know some-thing about them. There are six of them. MartyBalin is the lead singer; Paul Kantner is onlead guitar; Jorma Ludwick Kaukonen playssolo guitar; Jack Casaday is on bass; GraceSlick is second lead singer; Spencer Drydenis on drums. When they were appearing at theMatrix, in San Francisco, they became sopopular that it lead to an RCA Victor record-ing contract. The rest is history. Now theyhave a number one single and their album of"Surrealistic Pillow" is number six on thisweeks RPM album chart. A new single is onthe way.

Just as you were all breathing a sighof relief, here I am again with my usual gos-sipy column and a fantastic backlog of gossipthat will probably cause a few people toseriously consider leaving the country.fi/My.spies in Montreal tell me about a disc jockeywho seems to want to control all the musicthat is played in Canada. Unfortunately thatposition isalreadytaken by a group in Toronto,so he'll have to be happy with second rate. With his NON-UNION (and union agency)which looks like the next big thing for Mon-treal, unless they have a biti Gurney inthe local to keep things clean, he may bestarting something new, but his percentagegrab (40% and more) isn't new. The Torontoparasites are old hands at that game./ Have

MONTREALyou noticed that the groups who have REALLYmade it with their record releases haven'ttied in with disc jockeys or radio stations?Frankly, I can't see how a group or artist canmake it, tied to the apron strings of one radiostation, because the other stations won't giveit a listen let alone a play. It's been tried inToronto, Edmonton, Montreal and Vancouver, and it just doesn't work.///Rumour has it thatthe union is moving to clear up some of themesses their musicians have gotten themselvesinto with personal managers and bookers. They don't have to look too far from home forONE of the problems, and I'll bet they'repretending to be "the last to know"././/It'sa pity that CKFH doesn't have a chart. Toron-to's Canadian chart action really counts asNIL in the national scene because the otherstation doesn't submit their chart for myscrutiny. This unfortunately puts Toronto atthe bottom of the barrel.'//I'm collecting GOmagazines and so far I have a copy front

WMEX, WK6W, WFUN and a Toronto station. All the editions are the same except the mid-dle spread. Keeping that station newsy andthose pix coming will be quite a chore forradio stations that are anxious to sell space....on the air to stay in business.
