What’s New (Discover) (In this portion, the new lesson will be introduced to you in various ways such as a story, a song, a poem, a problem opener, an activity or a situation.)

THE  MUSIC  OF  THE  20TH  CENTURY

The  start  of  the  20th  century  saw  the  rise  of  distinct  musical  styles  that  reflected  a  move  away  from  the  convention  of  earlier  Western  classical  music.  These  new  styles  were;  impressionism,  expressionism,  neo-‐classicism,  avant-‐  garde  music,  and  modern  nationalism.

The  distinct  musical  styles  of  the  20th  century  would  not  have  developed  if  not  for  the  musical  genius  of  individual  composers  such  as  Claude  Debussy,  Maurice  Ravel,  Arnold  Schoenberg,  Bela  Bartok,  Igor  Stravinsky,  Sergie  Prokofieff  and  George  Sherwin.  They  stand  out  as  the  moving  forces  behind  the  innovative  and  experimental  styles  mentioned  above.

What is It (Discussion) (This section provides a brief discussion of the lesson. This aims to let you discover and understand new concept and skills.)

IMPRESSIONISM

One  of  the  earlier  forms  clearly  declaring  the  entry  of  the  20th  century  music  was  known  as  impressionism.  This  was  based  on  an  art  movement  started  by  19th  century  Paris-‐based  visual  artist,  specifically  Claude  Monet  through  his  painting”  Impression  Sunrise.”    The  term  found  its  way  to  music  in  the  late  19th  century  and  early  20th  century  among  French  composers  with  their  composition  Claire  De  Lune  (moonlight)Claude  Debussy  (1862-‐1918)  and  Bolero  by  Maurice  Ravel  (1875-‐1937).

The  sentimental  melodies  and  dramatic  emotionalism  of  the  preceding  Romantic  period  had  themes  and  melodies  that  were  easy  to  recognize  and

Page 9: MUSIC10 q1MOD.1 Musicofthe20thcentury v3

enjoy.  In  impressionism,  they  were  being  replaced  in  favor  of  moods  and  impression.  There  was  an  extensive  used  of  different  timbres  (tone  color  or  tone  quality)  and  effects,  vague  melodies,  and  innovative  chords  and  progressions  leading  to  mild  dissonances  through  orchestration,  texture,  or  harmonic  usage.

EXPRESSIONISM

Arnold  Schoenberg  (1874-‐1951)  (Three  Piano  Pieces  op.11,no.1)  revealed  the  composers  mind,  instead  of  presenting  an  impression  of  the  environment.  It  used  atonality  and  the  twelve-‐  tone  scale,  lacking  stable  and  conventional  harmonies.  It  served  as  a  medium  expressing  strong  emotions  such  as  anxiety,  rage,  and  alienation

PRIMITIVISM

Music style of Bela Bartok (1881-1945) (Duet for Pipes) is tonal through the stressing of one note as more important than the others. New sounds are synthesized from old ones by juxtaposing to simple events to create anew more complex event. In its purest form, primitivism combines two familiar or simple ideas together create new sounds.

Primitivism has link to Exoticism through the use of materials from other culture, To Nationalism through the use of materials indigenous to specific countries, and to ethnicism through the use materials from European ethnic group. Two well- known proponents of this style were Igor Stravinsky and Bela Bartok. It eventually evolved into Neo-Classicism.

NEO-CLASSICISM

Was a moderating factor between the emotional excesses of the Romantic period and the violent impulses of the soul in expressionism. It was, in essence. A partial return to an earlier style of writing, particularly the tightly- knit form of the Classical period, while combining tonal harmonies

with slight dissonances. It is also adopted a modern, freer use of the seven-note diatonic scale. Example of Neo-Classicism is Bela Bartok’s Song of the bagpipe and piano sonata. In this latter piece, the

Page 10: MUSIC10 q1MOD.1 Musicofthe20thcentury v3

Classical three movement format is combined ever shifting time signature, complex but exciting rhythmic pattern, as well as dissonances that produce harsh chords. The Neo-Classicist style was also used by composers such as Francis Poulenc with Perpetual Motion, no.1(1899-1963), Igor Stravinsky (Russian dance composition) (1882-1971), Sergei Prokofieff (Concerto in C Major OP.26 N0.3(1891-1953).

AVANT-GARDE MUSIC

Closely associated with electronic music, the Avant-garde movement dealt with the parameters or the dimensions of sound in space. The avant-garde styles exhibit a new attitude toward musical mobility, whereby the order of the note groups could be varied so that musical continuity could be altered. Improvisation is a necessity in this style, for the musical scores were not necessarily followed as written. For example, one could expect a piece to be read by a performer from left to right or vice versa. Or the performer might turn the score over, and go on dabbling indefinitely in whatever order before running to the starting point. George Gershwin Summertime composition(1898-1937) Leonard Bernstein (Tonight) (1918-1990)Philip Glass (Music in Fifths(1937).

MODERN NATIONALISM

A looser form of 20th century music development focused on nationalist composers and musical innovators who sought to combine modern Techniques with folk materials. Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov (Visions Fugitives op.22 no. 1), and ethnicism.

ELECTRONIC MUSIC

The new musical styles created by 20th century classical composers were truly unique and innovative. They experimented with elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo ad timbre in daring ways never attempted before. Some even made used of electronic devices such s synthesizers, tape recorders, amplifiers, and the like to introduce and enhance sounds beyond those available traditional instruments.

Among the resulting new styles were electronic music and chance music.
