Dear Concert Guests,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this series of concerts. Sharing God’s gift of music with you is truly a privilege. You will hear a variety of choral and instrumental music; the repertoire ranges from psalms, hymn settings, and sacred classics to spirituals and beyond. I am condent you will nd the music to be uplifting and inspirational.

I am delighted to collaborate with renowned organist and conductor, Mr. Martin Mans. It is wonderful indeed that he, with his team of musicians and the wonderful Martin Mans Formation, has returned to Canada to share several concert stages with us here in South Western Ontario. On behalf of Musica Sacra Chorus, I welcome Martin and his musical entourage most warmly.

I am reminded of Martin Luther’s words: “Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world”. May you hear some of music’s riches uncovered tonight. Soli Deo Gloria.

With the chorus’ pianist, Stephanie MacDonald, and organist, James van den Brink, it works to make magnicent music to God’s glory. Most singers live in the County of Oxford, Ontario, or its surrounding town and villages; some live as far away as Brantford, Strathroy, Port Dover, and Beamsville. MSC performs a wide variety of repertoire, ranging from psalm settings, sacred anthems and oratorios, and spirituals. The chorus practices weekly from September through May at Norwich United Church and performs in its neigbouring communities and beyond. The chorus is excited about their upcoming spring tour to the Netherlands!

THE MARTIN MANS FORMATIONThe Martin Mans Formation (TMMF) is an ensemble of men which puts much effort and time into its members’ favourite hobby—singing! The ensemble was originally established to be a semi-chorus of a Dutch male choir: De Gouwestem. In 2006, they were asked to collaborate with Duo Gavotte in a series of concerts to make a Christmas CD. This was incredibly

well-received and the ensemble decided to become an independent group of singers: The Martin Mans Formation.

TMMF has become a recognized and renowned ensemble that performs in over 60 concerts per year in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Canada. It performs repertoire consisting of spiritual,

classical and contemporary music.

TMMF has recorded two CDs and also participates in the television program: “Nederland Zingt”. Recently, it has performed in multiple locations in Ontario as part of the One Day Foundation concert series. TMMF is thrilled to be back in Canada for a series of 4 concerts!

JANTINE KALKMAN Trumpet Soloist

By the age of 5 she showed a keen interest in playing the trumpet. At 9 she had her rst lessons and by 10 years she owned her own instrument. She studied at the Muziekschool with Karin Snel.

As of 2003, she has been playing in the orchestras of the local music society Concordia. Besides playing in the orchestra, she accompanies various choirs and takes part in various concert tours in England, Canada, Germany, and France.

Jantine has participated in the various recordings in the Netherlands and abroad. Her rst solo recording, Sound the Trumpet, was released in 2010.

MARK BRANDWIJK Organist / PianistMark Brandwijk (1994) was born in Rotterdam and grew up in Krimpen aan den IJssel. At the age of 6, he took his rst organ lessons at Muziekschool.

In 2006, while continuing his organ studies with Everhard Zwart, he also started accompanying choirs as

an organist and pianist. For three consecutive years, Mark won the trophy at the Feike Asma-concours.

Mark accompanies 3 choirs that are directed by Ria Kalkman: Hadassah, Young Ladies Choir, and Blijde Klanken. He also accompanies the Groot Nederlands Jongerenkoor,

conducted by Harm Hoeve. Mark joined this group of singers on a concert tour to Canada in 2010.

Mark recently began piano studies at the Pianoacademie Krimpen with Mirjam IJsseldijk. Since mid-2011, he has been a member of the Martin Mans Band.

Audience Hymn

All people that on earth do dwell,Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice.Him serve with fear, His praise forth tell;Come ye before Him and rejoice.

The Lord, ye know, is God indeed;Without our aid He did us make;We are His folk, He doth us feed,And for His sheep He doth us take.

O enter then His gates with praise;Approach with joy His courts unto;Praise, laud, and bless His Name always,For it is seemly so to do.

For why? the Lord our God is good; His mercy is for ever sure; His truth at all times rmly stood,And shall from age to age endure.

To Father, Son and Holy Ghost,The God Whom Heaven and earth adore,From men and from the angel hostBe praise and glory evermore.

By the Waters Catherine DeLanoy

By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept when we remember thee, O Zion. There we hang our harps on the willows.

Cantique de Jean Racine Gabriel Faure O Lord of Hosts, how lovely are Thy dwellings,My soul longs for Thy courts, O Lord.My heart and esh cry out; O Lord, for Thee.

O blest are they whose hope is forever in Thee;Who praise Thy name, who sing their songs within Thy Holy house.O Lord, incline Thine ear; Look down, my spirit long for Thee.A Sun and Shield is the Lord of Hosts.

O Lord of Hosts, how lovely are Thy dwellings,My soul longs for the courts of the LordMy soul, it longs for Thee. O Lord of Hosts, for Thee my heart and esh cry out.

In Thee I trust; Look down and hear my prayer.O hear my prayer.

Daar ruist langs de wolken arr. M. Mans

Goin’ Home Anton Dvorak

Goin’ home, goin’ home, I’m a goin’ home.Quiet-like, some still day,I’m jes’ goin’ home. It’s not far, jes’ close by,Through an open door.Work all done, care laid by,Gwine to fear no more.Mother’s there, spectin’ me,Father’s waitin’ too.Lots o’ folk gathered there,All the friends I knew.Home, I’m goin’ home!

Nothin lost, all’s gain,No more fret nor pain,No more stumblin’ by the way,No more longin’ for the day,Gwine to roam no more!Mornin’ star lights the way,Res’less dreams all done.Shadows gone, break o’ day,Real life jes’ begun.Dere’s no break, aint no end,Jes’ a livin’ on.Wide awake with a smile,Goin’ on and on.

Goin’ home, goin’ home,I’m jes’ goin’ home. It’s not far, jes’ close by,Through an open door.I’m a-goin’ home,I’m jes’ goin’ home!

Look on Him and Live Sally DeFord

He came to earth to live as man, that man might learn to live,Look upon the Son of God, nd light and life in Him,He taught the sightless eyes to see, the lifeless limbs to stand,We learn compassion’s miracle at Jesus’ gentle hands.

ChorusLook upon the Son of God, for he has marked our path,Look upon his perfect life, and follow Him in faith,In every word, in every deed, in every joy, in every need,Look upon the Son of God, look on Him and live!

He walked in perfect holiness amid temptation’s power,He bids us walk in righteousness, unwavering and pure, The sinner found forgiveness in His words of welcome peaceThus we learn to come with hope before the throne of grace.

He freely drank the bitter cup of agony and pain, Thus we yearn for strength to say, “Thy will, not mine, be done,”He bore the unrelenting load to Calvary for us,So may we learn to bear with patience every lesser cross.

Nader mijn God bij U arr. Martin Mans

Not for Tongues Roy Hopp

Not for tongues of heaven’s angels, not for wisdom to discern, not for faith that masters mountains, for this better gift we yearn:may love be ours, O Lord.

Love is humble, love is gentle, love is tender, true, and kind;love is gracious, ever patient, generous of heart and mind:may love be ours, O Lord.

Never jealous, never selsh, love will not rejoice in wrong;never boastful nor resentful, love believes and suffers long:may love be ours, O Lord.

In the day this world is fading, faith and hope will play their part;but when Christ is seen in glory, love shall reign in every heart:may love be ours, O Lord.

O Heer Die Onze Vader Zijt arr. J.v.d.Waart

Oh when the Saints Spiritual

O when the saints go marching in,O when the saints go marching in,I want to be there in their number,When the saints go marching in.

I want to join that Heav’nly band,I want to join that Heav’nly band,I want to hear the trumpets blowin’When the saints go marching in.

I want to see that big white gate,I want to see that big white gate,I want to see those doors swing open,When the saints go marching in.

O when the band begins to play,O when the band begins to play,I want to be there in their number, when the band begins to play, Hallelujah,When the saints go marching in,When the saints go marching in,I want to be there in their number,When the saints go marching in,When the saints go marching in, marching in,When the saints go marching in.

Out of the Depths of Sadness Johan Bredewou

Out of the depths of sadness,O Lord, I cried to Thee;Thou who canst ll with gladness,Lend now Thine ear to me,O Fount of consolation, Attend unto my cry;Hear Thou my supplicationAnd to my help draw nigh.

I wait for God to hide me;My soul, with longing stirred,Shall hope, whatever betide me,In His unfailing word.My soul waits for JehovahWith more intense desireThan watchers for the morningTo dawn of day aspire.

Hope in the Lord, O nation! For with Him there is grace

Rejoice in the Lord Alway George Rathbone

Rejoice in the Lord alway; and again I say, rejoice!

Be careful for nothing but in everything in prayer by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be known unto God.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rejoice in the Lord alway; and again I say, Rejoice! Amen.

Speeltuin (Song for Warchild) J. Ewbank

Zo in alle moeiten, zorgen zonder tal, wees toch nooit ontmoedigd, God is overal.Tel uw zegeningen, eng’len luis’tren toe.

The Rose A. McBoom

Some say love, it is a river that drowns the tender reed,Some say love, it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed.

Some say love, it is a hunger an endless aching need,I say love, it is a ower and you its only seed.

It’s the heart, afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance,It’s the dream, afraid of waking, that never takes the chance.

It’s the one, that won’t be taken, who can-not seem to give,And the soul, afraid of dying, that never learns to live.

When the night, has been too lonely and the road has been too long,And you think, that love is only for the lucky and the strong.

Just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snow,Lies the seed that with the sun’s love, In the spring becomes the rose.

The Rhythm of Life C. Coleman

When I started down the street last Sunday, feel-in’ mighty low and kind a mean,Suddenly a voice said, “Go forth, neighbor! Spread the picture on a wider screen!”And the voice said “Neighbor, there’s a million reason, why should be glad in all four seasons!Hit the road, neighbor, leave your worries and strife! “Spread the religion of the rhythm of life”For the rhythm of life is a powerful beat, Puts a tingle in your ngers and a tingle in your feet!Rhythm on the inside, rhythm on the street,And the rhythm of life is a powerful beat!

To feel the rhythm of life, To feel the powerful beat,To feel the tingle in your ngers, To feel the tingle in your feet!To feel the rhythm of fe, To feel the powerful beat,To feel the tingle in your ngers, To feel the tingle in your feet!

AllGo and spread the gospel in Milwaukee; Take a walk-ie talk-ie to Rock-y Ridge! All the way to Canton, then to Scranton, Even tell it under the Manhattan Bridge. You will make a new sensation,Have a growing congregation, Build a glowing operation here below!Like a Pied Piper blowing, Lead and keep the music owing, Keep the rhythm go, go, going; go, go, go!

Unto Us a Child is Born G. F. Händel

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder and His Name shall be called:Wonderfull! Counselor! The mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

You’ll Never Walk Alone R. Rodgers

When you walk through a storm hold your head up high,And don’t be afraid of the dark.Al the end of the storm is a golden sky,And the sweet silver song of a lark.Walk on through the wind, walk on through the rain.

Have your dreams, be tossed and blown.Walk on, walk on with God in your heart, and you’ll never walk alone.

You Raise Me Up R. Lovland

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary; When troubles come and my heart burdened be;Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,Until You come and sit a while with me...

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;I am strong, when I am on Your shoulders; You raise me up... to more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;I am strong, when I am on Your shoulders; You raise me up... to more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas; And I am strong, when I am on Your shoulders; You raise me up...to more than I can be.You raise me up... to more than I can be.

Zadok the Priest G. F. Händel

Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anointed Solomon King. And all the people rejoiced, and said God save the King; long live the King! Amen! Alleluia! May the King live forever!
