Musical Instrument Museum

In early 2009, Amy Meadows joined the MIM team as a design consultant for several “Level 4” exhibits.

Working from initial concepts created by Gallagher and Associates, Amy and her team sought to further the theatricality of the presentation while maintaining the curatorial and academic rigor.

Each exhibit presented a unique, specific aspect of the instrument-- production, performance and instruction influenced the design decisions for the individual displays.

For maximum authenticity, distressed corrugated tin and faux fire and water pits were used. Platform was notched for enhanced viewing of a largely floor-based installation.

Rockin’!

Simultaneously onstage and off-stage, guitars, amps and gear cases took their positions on a “worn” stage floor. An overhead truss was added to accommodate theatrical lighting.

Shakuhachi –Research Photos

From rock n’ roll arenas to a traditional Japanese home . . .the exhibit for the Shakuhachi flute needed to represent both the domestic interior (for instruction) and the exterior (for performance). Using rice paper, shoji screens and tatami flooring, this split-screen view was successfullyexecuted on the smallest of all the Level 4 platforms.

Steinway Piano Workshop

Each of the preceding Level 4 workshops required extensive attention to detail in the selection of materials and the authentic recreation of a specific environment. However, we wished to create a unique point of view for the Steinway exhibit—much of what makes the Steinway piano unique is inside. So,we turned it inside out!
