March 6th - 12th is National Spring Cleaning Week…

My idea of superwoman is someone who scrubs her own floors. - Bette Midler I hate housework. You make the beds, you wash the dishes and six months later you have to start all over again. - Joan Rivers Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing. - Phyllis Diller I always clean before the cleaning lady comes. If not, when I come home, I can't find anything. Cleaning ladies are always hiding things you leave out. - Celia Cruz Dust is a protective coating for fine furniture. - Mario Buatta One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries. - A.A. Milne Housework is what a woman does that nobody notices unless she hasn't done it. - Evan Esar There was no need to do any housework at all. After the first four years the dirt doesn't get any worse. - Quentin Crisp

Patrick Keilthy

We are sorry to record that our fellow Wrawby News editor passed away

on Friday 10th February. Patrick was part of the editorial team that

took over managing the magazine in April 2002. We will miss his

contribution, his soft-spoken way, and the friendship and rapport that

developed between us over nearly 15 years of working together. Patrick

gave generously of his time and experience to the Wrawby community;

he was Treasurer of St. Mary’s Church, a member of the Parish Council

and latterly organiser of the Village Hall lunches. Our thoughts and

prayers are with Janice and Poppy.

Excitement at Brigg Tennis Club

Members of Brigg Tennis Club are getting very excited about their forthcoming move to the new facilities at Brigg Recreation Ground. The official opening of the whole site took place in mid February. Players will have had a taste of the new courts and club house facilities but plan a grand opening and a fun and taster day on Saturday 22nd April. It is hoped to host an exhibition match, followed by an invitation to members of the public to have a go. Some coaching and fun activities are planned too

Club nights will continue on Tuesdays for seniors with junior coaching on Wednesdays. Thursday will be a club night unless a home league match is scheduled. Saturday morning junior coaching will be started as a new activity and the Sunday morning group may make a comeback.

Of course we hope the courts will be used for casual and self organised play as well. The club coach will also be available to coach individuals and small groups of any age.

Watch out for more details both on the notice board at the Recreation Ground and our website www.briggtennis.co.uk

Please dispose of Dog Mess responsibly

Whilst the majority of dog owners are responsible and clear up after their dogs some do not. Others pick up the mess but, for unknown reasons, think it is acceptable to hang the bag from the nearest tree or leave it at the side of the footpath. There are red bins throughout the village solely for dog waste, provided by the Parish Council. Please make use of them.

Parish Council

Annual Public Meeting

Wrawby's Annual Public Meeting will be held on 7th March 2017 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.

Any residents may raise Parish matters at this meeting which will also be attended by the Ward Councillors of North Lincolnshire Council.

The regular Parish Council meeting will follow and the public will be welcome to stay on as observers.

A huge well done to Mrs Potterton, the staff and the children for such a wonderful Church School Report - The Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) Report. Examples of highlights are 'School leaders and staff bring passion and creativity to their work with a commitment that aims to help every child.' and 'The school values of love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control are used to shape

purpose, work and learning for both children and adults. The result is a calm and powerful ambiance for learning combined with remarkably high standard of behaviour and self-discipline.'

You can see the full report on the school website under the 'About Us' tab. Lots to feel proud about!

A team of 19 Year 5/6 children represented our school at the Brigg Cluster Sportshall Athletics event on

Friday 10th February. They all performed brilliantly and were thrilled to win the event! They now go onto the

area final at The Pods in Scunthorpe in March. Well done Team Wrawby! Many thanks to the parents who

offered transport and support/encouragement on the day.

As we find ourselves in the season of Lent once again, I wonder if you are planning on giving something up. Chocolate? Cheese? Crisps? Over the years I have more often than not given up chocolate for Lent, and felt quite pleased with myself for doing so. But it strikes me that this allows me to focus on how good I am being, (and how lovely it will be to eat that first chocolate on Easter Sunday) and doesn’t necessarily direct my thoughts to Jesus. I spend much of my chocolate-free Lent thinking about chocolate and looking for a suitable substitute to take my mind off my longing for some. Surely this isn’t what I should be doing?

Over the more recent years people have begun talking of taking something up for Lent, and so I have decided to take up an extra 5 minutes each day of sitting and listening to God - well I’m going to try! I am not very good and sitting and allowing myself to listen for God. I say my prayers, telling God about the people and situations I am concerned about, praying for events happening in my day, trying to remember to say thank you for the blessings of yesterday, before adding a hasty “Amen” as I go to get on with whatever is next on my agenda. I have this image in my mind of God trying to get a word in edgeways then throwing his arms in the air in mild dismay as I say my Amen. I am trying to learn to sit and listen, but its not easy, although like most things it gets easier with practise.

One of my favourite hymns is “Dear Lord and Father of mankind” and the last 2 lines in it say “Speak through the earthquake, wind and fire, O still small voice of calm”. Sometimes our busy lives can make us feel as if we are living in the midst of a hurricane, and the noise of the world around us seems to drown out that still small voice of calm.

I recently read an article about mindfulness . I am sure many of you have heard this term and no doubt many of you are reaping the benefits of practising it. Put simply, it is stopping what you're doing, and sitting quietly, and just being. Somewhere in there is focusing on your breathing and trying to empty your mind, but I think the stopping and sitting quietly are the first essential steps. Why not give it a go dear Reader, and this Lent set aside 5 minutes each day to sit and be peaceful - and listen for God telling just how much you are loved!

God Bless! Kate Marr
