MEDIA STUDIES MAGAZINE RESEARCH In my AS media course work I was given

the task to design and create my own Music Magazine. In preparation to doing this, I had to create a survey in order to find out who my target audience was. I created a survey on Questionpro.com, which would help me see what age range the genre Rock n’ Roll was most popular. Not only would the survey I created, help me find out who my audience are, but it would also help me find out how I could attract my audience and find out what they want within my magazine.

One of the questions I put in my survey was ‘what is your favourite music magazine’. I did this because I wanted to find out which magazine people preferred and why it is popular. I wanted to see if the most popular magazine follows all conventions or if they follow none or is there were in line with the male gaze or if they weren’t. I wanted to know these things so I could also use these techniques in the creation of my music magazine. But before I could study this magazine I needed to put this question on my survey to find out which magazine is most popular. After 68 people had answered my survey I now know that The Rolling Stones Magazine is one of the most popular magazines.

When deciding what sort of magazine I should create, I decided that the genre of my magazine would be rock, as I believe it would be easiest for me to create a rock magazine, as rock is my favourite genre of music. I knew that rock is not as popular as it was in the 60’s/80’s, so I added this question to my survey to find out how unpopular rock is to people aged 14-21, as I wanted to find out if a rock magazine would attract a large audience. Out of 68 people that filled out my survey 61 of them were people aged 14-21. As expected R&B was the most popular genre, the second most popular was rock. 26.% of the 68 people who filled out my survey chose rock as their favourite music genre, this has told me that if I were to create a rock magazine not only would I aim to attract people aged 30-40 I would also have to attract a younger audience of people aged 14-21. Ways in which I could do this is maybe have my magazine in line with the male gaze to attract young men aged 14-21, and also have feature stories of old rock and roll legends to attract a more elderly audience of men aged 30-40.

When planning the creation of magazine, I researched that many successful music magazines such as; Kerrang, NME and the Rolling Stones, all have websites for advertisement and other purposes. I then added this question in my survey to find out if the majority of people are on social media websites. The chart above shows you that only two of the 68 people who filled out my survey do not have a social media website, this tells me that the majority of the audience of my magazine, will most likely have an account on either Facebook or Twitter, which shows that I can easily advertise my magazine on Facebook or twitter and also update news on my magazine such as ; new issue releases and articles featured in new issues.

When planning the creation of my magazine, I had to think of a price in which I would give to my magazine. As I decided this I wondered if my audience would be able to afford my article, so I put this question in my survey. This has told me that more than 80% can not only afford my magazine weekly but also be able to afford some deals I plan to advertise within my magazine.

When planning the creation of my magazine I had decided that the genre of the magazine would be rock, with this being decided I knew that my magazine would attract a main audience of male aged 30-40 years of aged. But I wanted to find if rock had a fan base of males aged 16-21 so I added multiple questions within my survey to find out if rock was still a popular genre and if it had a fan base of a young age. I added the question “How old are you” as I needed to see what the age range of people who answered my survey was. As you can see over 75% of the people who answered my survey were at the aged range of 16-21. This show due that rock is still a popular genre towards the ages of 16-21; this is due to some other questions I asked in my survey such as “What genre of music do you like best”, which rock turned out to be the second most popular genre.

When deciding the main decisions of my survey, I decided that I would attract a male audience, as I believed that rock and roll did not appeal to the female audience. I added this question originally expecting that the majority of the people answering would be male, but in contrary the opposite occurred and the majority of the people who answered were female, this gave me the idea that rock and roll does have a female fan base to, even if it is a small one. This information showed me that maybe it would benefit my magazine, if I attracted an audience of both male and female.
