OUR 25 YEARS of service would not have been possible without the generous support of our donors and volunteers. Major Muhammad Abbas Ali and Sarwar Jahan Begum, his wife, started the Muslim Welfare Centre in 1993 to be a centre of charity and service to the needy, and we are incredibly overjoyed to see it continue to thrive as an embodiment of these values. We thank you for continuing to support the Muslim Welfare Centre, as we continue to touch the lives of all. We believe in serving the needy irrespective of religion, nationality or ethnicity.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Assalamu Alaikum, may the peace and blessings of Allah (God) be with you all.

As we are immersed in the blessed month of Ramadan, we would like to express our profound gratitude to God for allowing us to continue our mission of serving humanity as a means of serving Him for the last 25 years. Our sincere thanks also to our thousands of supporters for placing their trust in our humble mission: Service to humanity is service to Allah (God). Yes, we are 25 years old this year!

We have designated this year as FEED CANADA in our continuing effort to raise awareness about the growing food insecurity across Canada. We also took this message to Parliament Hill in Ottawa where our young Project Ramadan team had been invited this April to build food baskets for the less fortunate alongside members of parliament and senators from across Canada. I would like to thank our dear friends, MP Omar Alghabra for sponsoring us and Senator Salma Ataullahjan for her strong support.

The increased demand that our food banks witnessed last year, has continued to grow which has seen our capabilities straining to cope to provide for the poor. Our food banks in Mississauga and Toronto have seen a significant increase in numbers due to over 9000 Syrian and other refugees requiring assistance. With challenges there have also been achievements, al-hamdu lillah (all praise be to god). A number of our projects, including Project Ramadan, Free Medical Clinics and School Nutrition Program are all marking their tenth year of successful operation.

Muslim Welfare Centre has continued to see the growth in the scope and size of our popular initiatives such as Project Ramadan, Regent Meals and Water Exploration. Following our core value of serving our fellow Canadians first, we are working on a number of initiatives to attend to the needs of our first Nations communities across Canada – we are planning to establish the second branch of our Arctic Food Bank in Iqaluit, Nunavut this fall, God willing. We are also continuing our efforts for sharing our story with you through social media platforms such Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

For the second year, Muslim Welfare Centre is continuing its effort to learn more about our donors and supporters. We want you to rate our performance, tell us which programs are important to you and how we can keep you informed about our latest efforts and accomplishments. If you haven’t filled out our survey online, please do share your thoughts with us as your feedback is very important. Your ideas will inspire us to do better and to continue the legacy of service without prejudice espoused by our founders 25 years ago!

We pray that Allah bless all of our donors, volunteers, supporters and well-wishers with the best of both worlds. Aameen.

President Naushaba AliMuslim Welfare Centre

LOOKING BACK ON OUR JOURNEY

Over the past 25 years, the Muslim Welfare Centre of Toronto (MWC) has been serving the broader community, providing for the marginalized and vulnerable amongst us in Canada and overseas. Through programs like Project Ramadan, Free Medical Clinics, and the Arctic Food Bank, we have graciously been able to touch the lives of those in need.

WelcomeHome RefugeesOur values of inclusiveness, respect, and caring for our neighbours are at the the forefront of everything we do. We have been welcoming Syrian refugees through our programs, such as our Food Banks and Welcome Kits, which provide over 30 essential starter items for newcomer families and their homes. Since 2015, we have delivered over 560 kits to the homes of refugees. (see page 16 for more information)

Our First Nations FriendsSince 2015, we have been working to provide the Indigenous communities with programming such as school nutrition in two Indigenous schools and food baskets delivered to first nations communities. A food bank was established, dedicated to our Indigenous neighbours in the town of Inuvik, Northwest Territories, where we welcomed over 2,500 family visits in 2017. Our next Arctic Food Bank will open in Iqaluit, Nunavut this fall, God willing. (see page 10 for more information)

This year, MWC was honoured and privileged to launch the Feed Canada campaign on Parlia-ment Hill, to signify 25 years since our inception and 25 years of service to address the issues of food insecurity in Canada. We encouraged parliamentarians from across Canada to build food basket for the needy, thus building bridges across communities in support of the fight against hunger.

At the MWC, combating food insecurity has been a core mission behind many of our programs. In the 25 years since we began our service to humanity, we have expanded to serve meals to people across the Greater Toronto Area, Missis-sauga, Whitby, Hamilton, Ottawa, Montreal, and Inuvik in the Northwest Territories. Our next stop is Iqaluit - Nunavut, where we are planning to start a food bank this fall.

Our founders opened the first MWC food bank in 1993, where their work began in a small 100 square foot room in Toronto. It was a milestone for the community and provided much needed relief for locals in need. Over the last 25 years, we have served many clients, expanded our services and facilities, and opened food banks in two additional cities, Mississauga and Inuvik.

Each food bank supplies beneficiaries with perishable and non-perishable halal food, as well as household items, clothing, footwear and winter gear free of cost. Last year alone we had 25,000 visits to our food banks, including 9,000 newly arrived refugees.

Food insecurity is pervasive across Canada affecting millions of people of all ages but especially for those living in Northern Canada. According to Statistics Canada, the territories have considerably higher rates of food insecurity than people living in the provinces.

In 2015, MWC launched the first Arctic Food Bank in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. In collaboration with the Midnight Sun Mosque, we set out to provide necessary non-perishable food and meat for Indigenous community members in need.

Our second Arctic Food Bank is planned to open this summer in Iqaluit. Nunavut. We welcome all those that are interested in joining us in our effort to help serve our friends in the North. To learn more please visit www.arcticfoodbank.com or contact us [email protected]

Nunavut has the highest rate of food insecurity at 36.7%, which is over four times the Canadian average (8.3%).

The Northwest Territories has the second highest rate at 13.7%, followed by Yukon at 12.4%.

• Over $1 Million raised

• Gift a food basket for $50

Our founders always encouraged youth to engage in uplifting their communities, and Project Ramadan is a great example of our youth taking initiative. We celebrate the tenth year of successful operations of Project Ramadan this year!

Our dedicated volunteers, made up of hundreds of young people from across the GTA and Ottawa, have prepared thousands of food baskets that contain nutritional food for those in need, at a cost of just $50 a basket.

Through this program, the MWC has cared for over 15,000 families in need since 2009.

With initiatives like Project Ramadan, our food banks and meals on wheels, we will continue to try our best to tackle the pressing issue of food insecurity in Canada.

Thanks to our growing success with Project Ramadan, we have been able to share food donations with various charities, such as Salvation Army and church groups that work alongside us to fight hunger. We are always looking for contributors to our Project Ramadan team, whether it be as a volunteer, supplier, or sponsor of a basket. Join us as we continue to grow and spread our love through our grassroot initiatives!

We at the CRC | Regent Park Community Food Centre are so proud of our collaborative partnership with Muslim Welfare Centre and the many ways we impact the community together. MWC has built great connections in Regent Park and is playing an important role serving those in need in Toronto’s downtown east.

- Claire Barcik, Executive Director, Christian Resource Centre

The Muslim Welfare Centre is an incredibly progressive agency – a valuable partner and a friend of communities across the province and beyond. The Muslim Welfare Centre and TAIBU are key partners in Malvern Eats. This is but one of many impactful partnerships the MWC has forged in what is now a quarter century of service to humanity.

- Liben Gebremikael, Executive Director at Taibu CHC

REGENT MEALSRegent Park is one of Toronto’s liveliest, diverse neighbourhoods. It also faces many challenges like poverty, food insecurity, hunger and a growing reliance on food banks. When we started Regent Meals in 2014 our focus was to serve hot and nutritious meals to members of our community who struggle to eat well. Now our Regent Meals program serves approximately 400 meals every Sunday in collaboration with the Christian Resource Centre. Since its launch we have served over 60,000 meals to the Regent Park community.

We welcome sponsors interested in sponsoring individual meals for $6 or an entire lunch program for $2,400.

MALVERN EATSMalvern Eats is a unique example of different organizations working together to better serve their community. In 2016, the MWC teamed up with local organizations like the TAIBU Community Health Centre, 1LoveMalvern, 42 Division Toronto Police Service, Malvern Presbyterian Church, and Malvern Food Bank/Seventh Day Adventists to lead a free meal program for those in need. Once a week we come together to provide residents with freshly prepared lunches served in a restaurant style setting.

We welcome interested volunteers or sponsors to join us in helping improve our communities. You can be a donor by sponsoring meals at just $4. To learn more, please send us an email at [email protected].

MEALS ON WHEELSPoverty and lack of accessibility go hand in hand with food insecurity. As part of our fight against food insecurity, we started the Halal Meals on Wheels program in order to make our support more accessible for people who face these barriers.

Every weekend, without fail, our dedicated and hardworking volunteers set out to deliver over 500 bagged lunches to those in need all across Toronto and Hamilton. With the help of our generous donors who have supported this initiative since 2001, we have distributed over 260,000 meals to date!

DID YOU KNOW?

• 75,000+ meals hand-delivered

• Each meal costs $5

• Over 5 years in operation

MEALS ON WHEELS FOR SENIORSFor over 5 years, our Halal Meals on Wheels for Seniors program has provided nutritious meals, regular check-ins, and comfort with a smile to elderly members of our community.

We provide low-income seniors with healthy meals delivered right to their doorsteps! We are currently able to prepare and deliver over 300 meals, twice a week, in Regent Park and Toronto’s east end. We have hand-delivered over 75,000 meals and are humbled by the remarkable seniors that we have had the privilege to serve.

We welcome sponsors to join us in helping provide seniors with meals through this program at a cost of just $5.

PUBLIC SCHOOL NUTRITIONWith almost a third of children in Toronto living below the poverty line, supporting children’s nutrition in school is integral to our fight against food insecurity.

The MWC started sponsoring school-based nutrition programs in 2009 at 3 schools and has since been working in collaboration with the Toronto District School Board and Toronto Foundation for Student Success. Our efforts have allowed us to expand our breakfast, morning meals, and snack programs to include 22 schools across the less affluent areas of the Greater Toronto Area.

FREE MEDICAL CLINICSWhat once started in a warehouse to serve the uninsured around us, is now located in professional clinics in Scarborough and Mississauga. Our twice-weekly free medical clinics are comprised of a team of over 40 experienced medical professionals that provide services with the majority of our patients being refugees, new immigrants, international students, and visitors to our country.

We offer a highly personalized health care for patients and have served over 7,000 patients since 2009. We are truly grateful for the time volunteered by our team of practising doctors, nurses, nursing assistants and our network of specialists, pharmacies and pathological laboratories that contribute their services to this vital program.

Al Abbas Mussallah is a space dedicated to educational and spiritual growth for the community in our Mississauga facility that houses our food bank as well.

This educational facility has been in service since 2009, and offers special programs for men, women, and children. Services provided at this facility include: Congregational prayers, Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan and Eid prayers, Islamic education classes and Quranic recitation for children and adults, and other informative youth programs creating a space for education and community.

2018 marks the 5th backpack build we have organized, which adds up to over 5,000 backpacks. These backpacks are filled with essential age-specific school supplies, and distributed to shelters and church groups across the GTA. Last year, we even packed and distributed backpacks in the Arctic circle – Inuvik!

This year our target is 1,500 backpacks, including special deliveries to Indigenous schools in Inuvik. With the help of our volunteers and donors, we can make sure children are equipped with the tools for success!

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS

Share the joy of Eid festivities with the needy this year, by providing Qurbani meat to the needy in many parts of the world, including Pakistan, Guyana, Syria, India, Bangladesh, the Rohingya refugee camps and Azad Kashmir. For the last 20 years, the MWC has been honouring the traditions of Qurbani and Zabiha through arranging the sacrifice of cattle and sharing the meat with the less fortunate. In 2017 alone, over $200,000 worth of meat was distributed in several countries.

Please consider donating to this initiative so that we can bring happiness to the homes of the needy. MWC can arrange for sacrificing an animal and distributing the meat to the needy on your behalf.

QURBANI & ZABIHA

In 2015, the Muslim Welfare Centre embarked on a mission to address the grave nutritional needs and health concerns for pregnant women, young mothers and their children in the drought stricken Tharparkar desert region of Pakistan. There is a critical need for help to improve the food situation for the vulnerable in the population who are suffering due to the shortage of basic food items like flour, rice, milk & meat, etc.

Our team of medical doctors and field workers do outreach work in the Tharparkar region to identify vulnerable women and their children, educating them about health related issues, monitoring them throughout their pregnancy, providing them essential medicines and nutritional food, and arranging safe delivery of their child.

MOTHER AND CHILDHEALTHCARE PROJECT

• The MWC has helped more than 1,000 vulnerable women & children by providing them with food supplies, medicines and access to free medical camps.

• Since 2015, the Muslim Welfare Centre has spent over $50,000 on this Project.

SUPPORT A CHILD + SUPPORTA DEAF CHILDThere is an estimated 1.5 million homeless children in Pakistan. These children have inadequate access to healthcare, education, nutrition, and housing while being vulnerable to addiction, abuse, and gang violence.

MWC operates two schools and two free medical clinics in Pakistan to assist children and their families. Our services have now expanded to provide specialized care for hearing impaired children. We provide children access to quality education, health care, groceries, school uniforms and supplies.

For the past 18 years, we have been able to support 700+ needy students annually in the two schools. Additionally, we have expanded the program to include free, quality education and vocational training to 20 Deaf children at the Deaf Reach School - thanks to our hard working partners, the Family Educational Services Foundation.

DISASTER RELIEFThe MWC encourages service and care for all of humanity. In partnership with the Red Cross, International Development & Relief Foundation, Islamic Relief and other relief organizations, we have coordinated and delivered humanitarian aid and funding during large scale natural and man-made disasters.

We have engaged in aid and disaster relief funding for Bangladesh, Philippines, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, regions of the Caribbean, and Pakistan, as well as providing humanitarian aid in Syria and Myanmar. We are presently engaged in the construction of villages in Pakistan, and improved prenatal and infant care facilities in the Tharparkar desert.

The cost ofsponsoring a handpump is $800, andconstructing a wellis $2,500.

In developing countries, people are burdened by a lack of access to clean water. MWC’s Water Explora-tion Project aspires to lift that burden by digging water wells and installing hand pumps. These efforts are lifesaving for those who have to walk many kilometers for a can of clean water. Over 1,000 wells and hand pumps have been installed in desert regions across Pakistan since we started this project about 15 years ago.

We have received support from hundreds of our donors to carry out this project, and each water well or hand pump is commemorated with a plaque bearing the name of the donor.

We welcome sponsors interested in this initiative to join us in helping children and families living in remote villages with access to clean drinking water.

We owe our success to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, they are the catalysts for the positive growth and the change we have experienced over the last 25 years. Our volunteers are reflective of our programs and the communities that we serve - diverse in age, ethnicity, gender, and faith, but also diverse in skills and experiences. We are eternally grateful for the energy they contribute to the MWC.

Programs such as Malvern Eats, Regent Park, Project Ramadan, our Medical Clinics, Meals on Wheels and Food Banks require multiple hands for several hours at a time. And during events and the holy month of Ramadan, these numbers double and triple in hours. Through the joint efforts of our dedicated volunteers, devoted donors and hard working, committed staff, we have been able to successfully build a sense of community and belonging through providing dignified service to our communities.

We are always welcoming new volunteers - please contact us if you are interested in contributing in any capacity!

OUR FOUNDERSAs the Muslim Welfare Centre celebrates 25 years of service, we reflect on the hard work and selfless generosity of our founders Major Muhammad Abbas Ali (1921 - 2009) and his wife, Sarwar Jahan Begum (1928 - 2013).

During a visit to Canada and seeing the plight of their neighbors first hand, our founders set out to build a small food bank for struggling community members. With borrowed money and a small unit in Scarborough, Major Abbas and his wife opened the first halal food bank on March 1st, 1993. They named it the Muslim Welfare Centre of Toronto.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our founders and support from donors, the MWC was able to develop new initiatives to meet the needs of many communities across Canada. Today the work of MWC spreads from Toronto to Mississauga, Whitby, Montreal, Hamilton, and Inuvik in the Northern Territories. And soon we will be in Iqaluit too! The Muslim Welfare Centre has also expanded its services internationally by supporting programs for disaster relief and water exploration in many developing countries.

Their life and legacy still inspires us today as we strive to serve humanity and fulfil the mission that they began over two decades ago. As we continue to help our neighbours in need, the one constant in our 25 year history has been the guiding principle of our founders: Service to humanity is service to Allah!
