NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

ICAP Leopard at the start of the 2009 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race

In the denouement of the 34th America’s Cup, one thing is certain - technology is the future of the sport.

Technology is nothing to be afraid of - Musto has been spearheading technical sailing clothing for over 40 years, aided by a select group of elite sailors – from the early ocean racers to our more recent partnerships with Skandia Team GBR, Audi Sailing Team Germany and the SWE Sailing Team, who have been providing an invaluable test bed for our new dinghy kit.

Records are there to be broken, and technology plays a huge part. It is what drives the new VESTAS Sailrocket and ‘pilot’ Paul Larsen to break the world speed sailing record.

Super-maxi Leopard is another boat always seeking to hunt down new and exciting records - with their sights set on the Transatlantic Race 2011 amongst others.

2010 saw a superb result for Sidney Gavinet aboard Oman Air Majan - smashing both the existing fully-crewed and single-handed Round Britain and Ireland records. The Route De Rhum saw him lined up against some serious (brave?) competition.

Charlie Pitcher was a shade slower, but just as successful when he won the Woodvale Challenge Atlantic Rowing Race in 54 days - 400 miles ahead of his nearest challenger. He was quite rightly voted Seahorse Sailor of the Month and the proud

recipient of an Evolution Soft Shell Jacket as his prize!

Never one to deny a challenge myself, I too overcame a few obstacles this year and completed the London Triathlon in aid of the RNLI - a charity which Musto has worked closely with for over 20 years.

The big event in 2011 is the Volvo Ocean Race with its punishing ocean legs and high intensity inshore sprints. Just like last time, we will be with all the major players – though we are especially excited to be working with the Camper project.

The demands on clothing are extreme, with boat speeds of 40 knots creating a deluge of water funnelling over the boat up to

two metres deep, hitting the crew with stunning force. Add to this the demands of keeping warm and dry and you can see that the right sort of clothing is as important to a Volvo Open 70 as the right sails or electronics.

Fabrics - including the vital GORE-TEX® membranes, the design of neck and wrist seals, boots, gloves, base and middle layers, even socks, hats and balaclavas - are coming under the scrutiny of the world’s top sailors on the world’s toughest ocean race. The challenge we set ourselves is to take their feedback and ensure it plays its part in the development of the products that everyday sailors wear too.

In good time for the next edition of the race, Keith Musto developed the fi rst viable two-piece drysuit - a breakthrough which enabled bowmen to stay dry even up to their waists in water. Whitbread race developments also led to the Ocean Hood and Collar system which won Musto the Macmillan and Silk Cut Design Award and forms the basis of the head protection seen on Musto jackets today. In the 1985-86 race more than 50% of crews wore the Musto Three Layer system.

In the 1989-90 race, two crew members were swept overboard from Creightons Naturally - one, Tony Phillips, tragically died. As a result, the race organisers asked for a solution to the problem of hypothermia if a crew member falls into the cold waters of the Southern Ocean. The search for a viable product was led by renowned ocean skipper Skip Novak and Musto’s Drysuit was developed to comply with the requirements of the ORC and Whitbread Race management. It extended survival in four degree water from about 15 minutes to nearly two hours, thanks to its built-in watertight socks, latex neck and wrist seals and the unique facility of an oral infl ator which allowed the wearer to add buoyancy and insulation by puffi ng air into the suit.

As the racing became more professional and teams pushed their boats harder and harder, the need for the best clothing became paramount. When the new Whitbread 60 came into existence, the walls of water that swept these fast, planing boats demanded

the very best foul weather. The 1993-94 race coincided with the fi rst generation of breathable offshore GORE-TEX® fabrics. Ross Field’s Yamaha, took advantage of the new clothing which helped the crew maintain performance and blast into the top spot to win the race.

Development has continued apace in new breathable membranes and new bonded fabrics in conjunction with Gore™ with the race providing a development laboratory which cannot be replicated ashore. For the 2005-6 race, Musto teamed with the two-boat ABN AMRO team, asking the sailors to get involved in developing clothing to suit their specifi c needs - authentic R&D - which surely contributed to ABN AMRO One’s convincing win. The latest version of HPX has been developed to combat some of the problems encountered by the sheer speed and performance of the new Volvo Open 70s. These canting keel boats achieve speeds of over 40 knots and maintain high speeds through mountainous seas. You won’t win by backing off, so crews have to live with the constant fi re-hosing of cold water. HPX is specially designed to resist the fl attening effect of the water, maintaining air spaces created by the Middle and Base layers for insulation. It is highly resistant to abrasion and chafe caused by harnesses and aggressive non-slip deck coatings, even the lining is abrasion-resistant to protect the GORE-TEX® membrane against damage from inner layers.

In 1973, less than a decade after Keith Musto fi rst started making sailing clothing, the inaugural ‘Whitbread’ Round the

World Race left Portsmouth, kites fl ying, on a 3-stop circumnavigation concocted over a few beers in a pub. Seventeen yachts started the race and unlike today’s crew in their hi-tech GORE-TEX® clothing and specialist layering systems, most of the competitors were relying on woollen jumpers and PVC “oilskins” to keep them protected from the elements.

Mexican sailor Ramon Carlin won the race in Sayula II, a Swan 65, which was a standard big cruising yacht of its day. Sayula II had a freezer aboard to store steaks, burgers and chicken for each day’s menu, and there were copious amounts of wine in her stores. The crew even took along their pyjamas. Their big adventure succeeded. From then on the race became more important than the achievement. Bigger and faster boats were entered and the organisation became more professional.

The second race in 1977-78 attracted some of the top racers of the day, but as it was a race on handicap, it was not always the biggest and fi rst into port that took the trophy. Conny van Rietschoten’s Flyer, a 65ft S&S design, won on handicap and his success

spurred Conny to go one better for the next race - looking for both line honours and the handicap win. Van Rietschoten had a new aluminium yacht built, designed by German Frers and put huge effort into fi nding the best and most effi cient way to pursue his goal.

Early in 1979, Conny approached Keith Musto with a view to creating the ultimate sailing clothing for his crew. Keith, who up until then had mainly concentrated on inshore sailing, was fascinated by the challenge of keeping ocean sailors warm and dry, but still able to perform as they would on an inshore race. Keith realised that just providing an outer layer was not suffi cient - the clothing system had to be engineered from the inside out. The three layer system was born; special underwear designed to keep sweat away the skin, a middle layer for warmth and an outer layer to repel all that was thrown at it. There wasn’t the technical fabrics that are available today, but the concept was created and still uses the same philosophy more than two decades later. Keep the skin dry as possible, retain heat and pass moisture to the protective outer skin which transfers the moisture to the air outside thanks to its breathability.

Flyer II went on to win the 1981-82 race in style, on handicap and as fi rst boat home, despite Conny suffering a heart attack deep into the second leg to Auckland - something he kept quiet from the rest of the competitors in order to prevent them taking advantage. One of the Flyer II crew was a young, rough and tough Kiwi: Grant Dalton. His baptism of water – if not fi re – aboard Flyer was to start a long-term relationship with the race that endures to this day.

For this new edition of the Volvo Ocean Race setting off in November 2011, Musto has once again teamed with Grant Dalton and the Camper project, managed by Emirates Team New Zealand. ‘Dalts’ demands the best and Musto has a long history with this hard-driving skipper throughout his ocean racing campaigns. He will drive hard to create the best clothing possible for his team.

Trying to stop onrushing waves at 4ºC going down your neck while thrashing the grinder handles as the boat screams through the Southern Ocean at 40 knots needs more than a standard collar or even a latex drysuit seal. Input from our supported sailors combined with the experience and innovation of our design and development team will result in an all round improvement which will not just make life easier for the race crews, but also for the everyday sailor. We will be trialling new boots, new gloves and new designs of smocks, jackets and trousers. Feedback we get goes straight into developing even better kit to keep you dry, warm and capable of working at optimum effi ciency. As in no other sport, the lessons learned from the very top echelons always fi lters down to the clothing bought by the everyday sailor.

Having learnt a lot from the first Sailrocket (see above images) The recently launched VESTAS Sailrocket and ‘pilot’ Paul Larssen will be out to break the outright world speed record (currently set at 54.10 knots over a 500m course). Basing

themselves on a beach in Namibia, they will wait for the ideal conditions to set to the water and smash the record. Watch out for further news on www.sailrocket.com

HOW FAST?

RECORD BREAKERWith the ‘Record de La Méditerranée’ under their belt in 2010, Pascal Bidégorry and his team on the the maxi-trimaran Banque Populaire V will are focusing their efforts on the quest for the Jules Vernes Trophy for the fastest circumnavigation around the globe (21,760 miles). Hopefully the D35 was a good training ground having won the prestigious Challenge Julius Baer against some stiff competition including Loïck Peyron and Team Alinghi. Jeanne Grégoire also saw great success in the ‘Solitaire du Figaro’, the 1717 mile, 4-stage single-handed race (Le Havre-Gijón-Brest-Kinsale-Cherbourg) finishing in 5th place.

See www.voile.banquepopulaire.fr for more news and information.

VINCENT RIOU, PRBWith a brand new boat launched in Autumn 2010, Vincent gave the boat a full work-out during the Route de Rhum building towards his long term goal - the 2012 Vendée Globe. He has a good feeling for this new boat yet recognises he’s a long way from achieving his goal.

“with regard to the level of ergonomic thinking gone into the deck and interior plan, the visibility from the cubby and the general workings of the boat, everything is spot on.”“que ce soit au niveau de l’ergonomie du plan de pont et de l’intérieur, de la visibilité depuis la cabine ou de la marche générale du bateau, tout est nickel.”

REBUILDING YOUNG PEOPLE’S CONFIDENCE

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust worked with every young persons primary cancer treatment centre in the UK last year. They also added a new trip for 18-24 year olds and a more challenging cruising week for those returning to sail. Their growth and success has meant more trips to make a positive impact on more young people’s lives. 2011 sees a new name, new logo and new mission statement. “rebuilding young people’s confidence.”

CAMPER JOINS FORCES WITH ETNZ

The Camper VOR project, run by Emirates Team New Zealand has been ramping up their challenge for the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race with a new Botin Carkeek designed VO70 due to be launched in the spring. Musto was pleased to be asked to supply their kit for this arduous race which starts from Alicante in October.

Our old friend Pete couldn’t resist another challenge so he set off again in October on the Route de Rhum, in ‘DMS’, a Class 40. He reported “it has been a few years since I have sailed such a fast and high-tech boat and the systems have come on leaps and bounds.” Pete has always played an active role in testing Musto products and this transatlantic trip was no different - his feedback goes straight into improving the products that you buy.

When Keith Musto created the first three layer clothing system for the 1981-82 Whitbread

Round the World race, one vital element of the puzzle was missing. Keith realised sailors needed special base layers to wick sweat away from the body in order to keep warm instead of having sweat cool against the skin creating a chill. He added a middle layer which offered insulation for heat retention, but driven by the heat of the body, passed water vapour outwards, ensuring it couldn’t get back to the skin. What was missing was a truly breathable outer layer which would allow water vapour to escape from the middle layer to the atmosphere.

Enter W. L. Gore & Associates, a company which based its whole existence on finding uses for a polymer known as polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE for short. Gore discovered that rapidly stretching sheets of the polymer made it porous enough to pass water vapour, but not so porous it would let the larger molecules of water pass in the other direction. This opened the way to create a truly breathable fabric that would provide the final piece in the triumvirate.

Musto GORE-TEX® fabric ocean sailing clothing was first trialled in 1993 aboard the Whitbread 60 Yamaha. It was the toughest test imaginable and thoroughly tested its properties of breathability, waterproofing and resistance to abrasion. After passing

with flying colours, Musto swiftly introduced the fully breathable three layer system to the sailing world and HPX was born.

HPX was always planned to be for the ocean sailor, the trans-ocean racer and those who wanted the ultimate in protection - like Bear Grylls who traversed the ice strewn Northwest Passage in an open RIB last year. Apart from its fabrics - substantial weight for abrasion resistance and longevity, and recently to help counter the fire-hose effects of today’s high speed multihulls and canting keel monohulls - HPX has always featured the ultimate in hood technology and durable neck, wrist and ankle closures - essential for keeping water out.

The HPX roll call reads like a who’s who of ocean sailing: Ellen MacArthur during every record-breaking circumnavigation in monohulls and multihulls; Pete Goss when he heroically rescued Raphael Dinelli in the Southern Ocean; Mike Golding and his hundreds of thousands of ocean racing miles; Pascal Bidégorry and the crew of the maxi-trimaran Banque Populaire; Sidney Gavignet when he recently set the new solo and crewed Round Britain and Ireland record aboard Oman Air Majan; Francis Joyon on the trimaran IDEC with the single-handed round the world record; Mike Sanderson and the crew of ABM AMRO, winners of the 2005/6 Volvo Ocean Race. HPX evidently is the foul weather gear of choice for ocean sailors.

But it was soon clear that the ultimate breathability of GORE-TEX® fabric and the way it was integrated into Musto’s offshore garments was just as relevant to racing closer to land as it was to zooming off round the planet. Increased suppleness of fabric, ergonomic styling and hood and collar arrangements to suit less extreme usage were the main requirements for MPX. MPX Offshore for instance, is the choice of many for substantial coastal navigation and for transatlantic passages. The collar and hood are very similar to the HPX, as are the wrist and ankle closures, the difference is mainly in the lighter weight of the outer fabric.

MPX Race has been designed for the sailor who will be working hard on a short race and who will be expected to input bursts of physical effort, probably generating plenty of sweat, then sitting on the rail until it is time to work again. The problem here is the chilling effect of drying sweat when inactive. You need to be protected from spray, but unless your clothing is exceptionally breathable, you will be chilled by the time it comes to go again and muscles will be cold and easily strained. MPX, when teamed with appropriate layers underneath, is so effective in disposing of sweat that there is no chilling effect and you can perform to top efficiency on demand.

The roll call for MPX is just as glittering as that of HPX: Mike Slade’s 100ft ICAP Leopard has MPX Race for inshore and MPX Offshore for her record attempts and for races like the Rolex Fastnet, Middle Sea and Sydney Hobart; The Luna Rossa TP52 team; Rán, Nikolas Zenstrom’s highly successful mini maxi also used MPX inshore and offshore, and numerous Extreme 40 teams wear MPX to ward off the high speed soaking their very fast catamarans constantly provided.

However, more recently it was clear that even MPX Race was a little heavy for Caribbean, Far Eastern and Mediterranean summer racing. Air and water temperatures rise and body temperatures go with them. What was needed was a highly breathable, but very light outer to be worn over just a wicking T-Shirt and shorts. LPX came to the rescue. All the breathability you expect from a GORE-TEX® membrane combined with an incredibly lightweight outer fabric. A simple jacket and either shorts or trousers make up the waterproof layer, leaving the base layer choice to anything suitable in the quick dry, high wicking synthetic fabrics we have available.

In the big racing events of the Mediterranean like the Voiles de St Tropez, the Rolex Maxi Cup in Sardinia, the Giraglia Cup and yachts such as Andreas Soriano’s Alegre have been winning with LPX. Rán uses LPX for the hotter events; in the TP52 racing, Cristabella and Pace and Mike Golding’s ECOVER Extreme 40 have seen the performance advantage of LPX.

LPX has found itself another niche in sailing, as a streamlined and flexible outer layer for the fast sports boats that are so popular. The Laser SB3, Melges 20, Etchells and many other sports boats need great crew athleticism, but need to protect from plenty of flying water. LPX does the job.

Top competitors understand the advantages that HPX, MPX and LPX give them in their racing, but those advantages aren’t limited to the Grand Prix circuit. Extremely hard wearing, very comfortable, the most breathable clothing on the market and ideally adapted to just about every sailing genre - the ’PX series does it all. Just chose your weapon of choice.

BENEFITS:• Durably waterproof & windproof • 20,000mm waterhead pressure resistant after 5 washes• Breathable• Ergonomic design

CONSTRUCTION:• 2-layer microporous coated fabric (190g m2)• Inner mesh lining• Taped seams - 100% waterproof

INNOVATION:DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coatings are applied to all of our technical waterproof garments to encourage water to bead and run-off. This reduces the chance of a garment becoming saturated with water (wetting out) and also affecting the garment’s breathability.

Having led the medal table in Beijing, there is a lot of pressure on Skandia Team GBR to do well in home waters, but with a deluge of experience and new talent coming through meaning the challenge for selection will be tight- the Finn class seeing both Ed Wright & Giles Scott aiming to crack Ben Ainslie’s domination.

Skandia Team GBR saw some impressive results in 2010, including in all three Paralympic classes and Lucy Macgregor also topped the ISAF Women’s Match Racing rankings for the fi rst time- the Brits will have to be careful not to peak too early.

Maintaining their training in the build up to the games, Audi Sailing Team Germany are working hard to show that they have what it takes to be a top nation in 2012. The Laser class is highly competitive and Franziska Goltz is looking good in the Radial. Silke Hahlbrock and her Match Racing team have also been showing consistency against the competition. There’s high hopes for Kröger (2.4mR) who was on the podium in the 2010 Worlds and could it be another Gold for Kroker/Prem/Mainka in the Sonar?

The Swedish SWE Sailing Team, are very determined to do well in Weymouth - no stone is left unturned with wind and current conditions being analysed in preparation for the games. 2010 saw Dahlberg/Östling (men’s 470) get podium position in the ISAF World Cup and Beijing medallists Loof/Tillander (Star class) showing their potential for another medal in 2012.

Brazilian sailor and Musto fan Fernanda Olivera has been seeing steady results in the Women’s 470 class, relying on the MPX Race Dry Smock to keep the spray off.

The Kirkland Brothers are having their taste of fame in their native Bermuda and their 49er campaign is gaining momentum - see the awesome cover shot from the Bermudian Magazine on their blog www.bermudabrothers49ersailing.blogspot.com

The host venue for the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic sailing Events is ever-growing in popularity with many

classes choosing to hold their events at this world class facility with access to a great variety of sailing waters. 2010 saw a plethora of successful events including Farr 45 nationals and over 500 children sailing Oppies. In an amazing feat of coordination inside the harbour, A record was set with 300 optimist sailors succeeding in tacking 8 times simultaneously to celebrate 2 years to the games at the Volvo Musto Optimist British Nationals!

The Sail for Gold regatta will takeplace at the earlier time of 4-11June, 2011 to allow for the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOGOC) to manage the offi cial test games even for the fi rst two weeks of August.

See www.wpnsa.org.uk for any information if you are going to Weymouth.

To be able to withstand the extreme environments for which these garments are designed, HPX uses GORE-TEX® Pro Shell with Ocean Technology® and GORE™ Micro Grid Backer, a 3-layer fabric offering superior durable, breathable and waterproof properties. Stretch GORE-TEX® fabric panels are also used to allow a greater range of movement.

MPX, constructed with a 3-layer GORE-TEX® Pro Shell is designed to perform over extended periods of sailing activity to meet the needs of serious enthusiasts who need durable waterproof and breathable protection. MPX Race specifically uses Stretch GORE-TEX® fabric panels to offer greater freedom of movement when required.

LPX uses GORE-TEX® Paclite® Shell, the lightest GORE-TEX® fabric in order to provide the extreme breathability and waterproof coverage required in warmer climates. This 3-layer fabric has a durable backer to enhance longevity in these lightweight garments.

BR2 waterproof fabric is a 2-layer microporous coated fabric with a polyester mesh lining. The fabric breathes by allowing moisture from the warm high humidity zone around the body to escape through microscopic holes which are too small for water to penetrate. The fabric is also treated with a DWR finish (durable water repellency) forcing water to bead and run off.

BR1 waterproof fabrics have a durable hydrophilic coating which ‘breathes’ by absorbing moisture from the warm high humidity zone and passing it through the fabric and away from the body. Garments have a DWR finish forcing water to bead and run off. BR1 is ideal for sailors who enjoy coastal and inshore sailing and are unlikely to be subject to severe conditions for a prolonged time.

GORE-TEX® Pro ShellGORE-TEX® Paclite® ShellGORE-TEX® Performance ShellThe GORE-TEX® membrane is the heart of all GORE-TEX® products. It is completely wind and waterproof, but permeable for water vapor. The result: Water from the outside will never penetrate, cold winds cannot pass through and perspiration can escape easily. This is why your body always stays dry and comfortable with GORE-TEX® products.

WINDSTOPPER®

The WINDSTOPPER™ membrane is an ultra thin protective layer which is laminated to a lightweight textile layer, making it totally windproof. It is made of the versatile polymer PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) which is expanded to create a microporous structure. These micropores are 900 times larger than water vapor molecules, allowing perspiration to pass through unhindered. This means that the WINDSTOPPER™ membrane adds total windproofness to any textile without perceivably restricting its initial breathability or weight.

GORE-TEX®, GORE®, Paclite®, WINDSTOPPER® and designs are trademarks of W. L. Gore & Associates.

Schoeller® -keprotec®

Hard wearing fabric using Kevlar®, an aramide fibre which is, gram for gram, five times stronger than steel.

NILIT® BODYFRESHSmooth, comfortable, high performance antibacterial yarn which provides increased, freshness through effective antibacterial action using silver ion technology.

POLARTEC®

POLARTEC® CLASSIC™POLARTEC® MICROFLEECEPOLARTEC® ECO-ENGINEERINGA family of soft, easy care & pill resistant breathable fabrics which provide excellent warmth to weight ratios through the use of low absorbency, high loft, polyester fibres. These light yet durable fibres ensure that warm insulating air is held next to the body. All the fabrics dry quickly and the POLARTEC® CLASSIC™ has the addition of a DWR finish.

POLARTEC® is a registered trademark for fabrics made only by Malden Mills.

d3o®

d3o containing intelligent molecules is flexible and moves with the wearer yet locks together on impact- absorbing energy & providing superior protection. d3o outperforms conventional soft foams of the same thickness on impact by up to six times.

ev02®

EV02 fabric is a second generation lightweight technical fabric offering high wicking and fast dry properties for thermo regulation during intense sports activity. Further benefits include SPF40 and an anti bacterial finish further enhance the technical benefits.

OutDry®

An innovative technology to waterproof garments where the standard manufacturing techniques based on seam-sealed waterproof fabrics cannot be utilised. The OutDry® patented lamination process is such that the waterproof/breathable membrane is directly bonded to the external layer of the garment, perfectly sealing any possible water entry point.
