THE SHEPHERD’S VOICE MARCH 2018 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong — that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. (Romans 1:11-12) “Missions” or being a missionary is often some- thing we in the church associate with people go- ing to other countries and living there for long periods of time. But a part of “mission work” is what the Apostle Paul calls “mutual encourage- ment.” In January, I had the opportunity to visit some of our Lutheran brothers and sisters in Ethiopia to be mutually encouraged in our faith and our shared mission to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those who have not heard. The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Ye- sus (“place of Jesus), is now one of the largest Lutheran denominations in the world. Our con- nection with the EECMY is through the Au- gustana District, a group of roughly 70 congrega- tions from our denomination, the Lutheran Con- gregations in Mission for Christ. In 2012, delegates from the Augustana District participated in a mission conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and developed relationships with the leaders of the EECMY. Since that time, we have partnered with them to send out Evan- gelists to plant preaching points and grow churches in areas that have no other church or are heavily populated by Muslims. Here are a few of the things our partnership has accom- plished: 69 Evangelists have been sent out 25 Congregations have been established 7 different regions of Ethiopia have been reached To support this, the Augustana District regularly sends funds to the Tabor Congregation of the EECMY. These funds originally come from congregations like SOTH! Here is a glance at what has been sent so far from 2014-2017: $146,378 for Evangelist support $32,497 for new church construction $22,928 for purchase of church land $7,400 for farmer training/support $28,769 for purchase of ministry vehicle $6,250 for Evangelist and minister training Total = $244,222 Mutually Encouraged That is pretty amazing to know that we have helped make such a big impact in spreading the Gospel! But here is the really great part: the Tabor Congre- gation (EECMY) has put in $553,940 for all of these things! Our support from the Augustana District is roughly 31% of the total! They are the leaders of this, and we are merely partners helping them to make a greater impact. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. (2 Cor. 8:3) While it is difficult to really get into all of the people I met, the things I saw, and the mutual encouragement I received in a brief newsletter article, I hope this gives you a glimpse of how God is using us to par- ticipate in some truly amazing things all around the world. I hope that you will continue to give and prayerful- ly consider increasing your giving to SOTH so that we can continue to grow partnerships like this. As the Apostle Paul wrote: But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving. I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. MARCH 2018

I long to see you so that I may impart

to you some spiritual gift to make you

strong — that is, that you and I may be

mutually encouraged by each other’s

faith. (Romans 1:11-12)

“Missions” or being a missionary is often some-thing we in the church associate with people go-ing to other countries and living there for long periods of time. But a part of “mission work” is what the Apostle Paul calls “mutual encourage-ment.” In January, I had the opportunity to visit some of our Lutheran brothers and sisters in Ethiopia to be mutually encouraged in our faith and our shared mission to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those who have not heard.

The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Ye-sus (“place of Jesus), is now one of the largest Lutheran denominations in the world. Our con-nection with the EECMY is through the Au-gustana District, a group of roughly 70 congrega-tions from our denomination, the Lutheran Con-gregations in Mission for Christ.

In 2012, delegates from the Augustana District participated in a mission conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and developed relationships with the leaders of the EECMY. Since that time, we have partnered with them to send out Evan-gelists to plant preaching points and grow churches in areas that have no other church or are heavily populated by Muslims. Here are a few of the things our partnership has accom-plished:

• 69 Evangelists have been sent out • 25 Congregations have been established • 7 different regions of Ethiopia have been

reached

To support this, the Augustana District regularly sends funds to the Tabor Congregation of the EECMY. These funds originally come from congregations like SOTH! Here is a glance at what has been sent so far from 2014-2017:

• $146,378 for Evangelist support • $32,497 for new church construction • $22,928 for purchase of church land • $7,400 for farmer training/support • $28,769 for purchase of ministry vehicle • $6,250 for Evangelist and minister training • Total = $244,222

Mutually Encouraged

That is pretty amazing to know that we have helped make such a big impact in spreading the Gospel!

But here is the really great part: the Tabor Congre-gation (EECMY) has put in $553,940 for all of these things! Our support from the Augustana District is roughly 31% of the total! They are the leaders of this, and we are merely partners helping them to make a greater impact.

For I testify that they gave as much as they

were able, and even beyond their ability.

(2 Cor. 8:3)

While it is difficult to really get into all of the people I met, the things I saw, and the mutual encouragement I received in a brief newsletter article, I hope this gives you a glimpse of how God is using us to par-ticipate in some truly amazing things all around the world.

I hope that you will continue to give and prayerful-ly consider increasing your giving to SOTH so that we can continue to grow partnerships like this. As the Apostle Paul wrote:

But since you excel in everything—in faith, in

speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness

and in the love we have kindled in you—see

that you also excel in this grace of giving.

I am not commanding you, but I want to test

the sincerity of your love by comparing it with

the earnestness of others. For you know the

grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he

was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so

that you through his poverty might become

rich. (2 Cor. 8:7-9)

President’s Corner By Sandy Oliver He must increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30 During this season of Lent, I would like to welcome you to my very first President’s Corner! As I shared during the Annual Meeting, it is truly humbling to serve this congregation as their 2018 Council President. I would like to say thank you very much to our outgoing President, Don Kriefall. Don just completed two terms as your Council President. When he was elected in Janu-ary of 2016, no one was aware that not that long after his election, our church would learn the news that Pastor Jay was being called to a new opportunity with another church. Don’s commitment to his position and steady leadership has been a blessing. Don was elected as Vice President for 2018 and we are thankful for his continued service. A couple of updates on some special committee work that is continuing to move forward: The call committee is exploring resumes of candidates for our Associate Pas-tor position. The call process is a bit different than a sec-ular hiring process. While there are many aspects that are similar - like resumes and interviews - a Pastor is called by God to serve. Additional news will be shared as the pro-cess continues. Another committee is working on updat-ing our Emergency Action Plan. This plan was updated last in 2013 and includes information regarding how to handle a variety of emergencies - like a fire or a torna-do. The final details of the committee’s work will be communicated with the congregation in the coming months.

Blessing Our Sanctuary at Easter

It’s time to order Easter flowers to bless our Sanctuary! Each year at Easter, we invite members and friends of our Church Family to make a floral contribution to the Glory of God, In Memory of... (a loved one) or In Honor of... (a special person or event).

This is a fitting way to honor our loved ones and make it possible to decorate the Sanctuary in a festive man-ner for Easter. The flowers will be ordered for $11.00 each. Pick up an order form at church. Payment is due with your order.

Inquiries can be directed to Sue Faber in the church office at [email protected].

Nicole Corrie - My family and I have been blessed to be members at SOTH for over 6 years. By day, I am a Senior Personal Banker at First Bank Financial Centre. Outside of that, my husband Mike and I have 3 daugh-

ters that consume our time with Gymnastics, Soccer, Girl Scouts, Piano and many other fun activities. In our other free time, we love to play games and watch movies!

Jeff Drake - I have been attending Shepherd of the Hills since marrying my wife, Pam – a lifetime SOTH member, in 2004. Together we have two wonderful daughters and are the central drop off leaders for Operation

Christmas Child. Our family loves playing games, having family movie nights, the Brewers, and enjoying the out-doors. I work in public accounting, coach soccer, and am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to serve our church.

Don Kriefall - Sandy and I have been mem-bers at SOTH since we moved to Richfield in 1988. We have been here to witness SOTH grow, not only in congregation size with a new church built, but, more im-

portantly, in Spiritual growth in worship, mission out-reach and community.

Jim Leurquin – My wife Maureen and I, along with our children Jason and Sarah, have been members at Shepherd of the Hills for 5 years. I am a manager at Grainger In-dustrial Supply where I have worked for 32 years. I enjoy woodworking, fishing, and

volunteering at The Gathering where I help to lead the organization as a board member. I am humbled to serve on Council and look forward to supporting our Pastor and congregation as we continue to focus on be-ing a community that lives by and for the Gospel.

Sandy Oliver – My family has been a part of the Shepherd of the Hills family for over 15 years. During the day I work for a soft-ware development company as a Business Analyst but on the weekends I love to pedal my bike around southeastern Wisconsin and

enjoy all the amazing restaurants in the area.

Deb Pluger - I have been a member of Shep-herd of the Hills for about 4-5 years now. I am a semi-retired life insurance underwrit-er. By working only part time, I am blessed to be actively involved in my granddaughter's

life. On the weekends, my husband and I enjoy taking small day trips on our motorcycle.

Karol Schmidt - My family and I have been at Shepherd of the Hills for about five years. During the day I work for Froedtert Hospital as a Scheduling Coordinator and during my free time, I enjoy spending time with Todd and our girls. Dan Smith - I have been a member of the church for over 20 years and was personally Confirmed, Married and had my son baptized at Shepherd of The Hills. By day I operate a Financial Advising, Retirement Planning and Wealth Management business in Germantown

under the firm name of Waddell & Reed Financial Advi-sors, as well as own a Divorce Financial Analysis firm, Compound Solutions LLC, also in Germantown. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my wife Amanda and son Dylan, and can be found outdoors and up north as much as possible.

Ken Stigler - After retiring and moving back to Wisconsin from Illinois around 5 years ago, we immediately joined Shepherd of the Hills. I am currently involved with two Bible Stud-ies. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking and

playing golf.

By Mike Rodriguez A HUGE THANK you to the volunteers who helped us out for the Jan./Feb. dates that SOTH volunteered at the Falls Food Pantry in Menomonee Falls. This last time period represented the first time in years that we had to ask volunteers outside of SOTH to assist us in volunteer-ing. We are looking at posting all of our serving dates for the year, as we know them in advance to try and fill them up earlier. We are also planning on putting the signup sheets in the church lobby one week earlier. Please consider signing up as a family, as a couple or inviting a friend along.

Did You Know? by Barb Lesch

Barb and Marv Lesch and family, members of Shepherd of the Hills, own Pine Hill Or-chard, which has been in business for 40 years with approximately 400 fruit trees on their homestead.

If you have been to a food event at SOTH (Pie Social, Annual Pie and Soup dinner, Lenten Suppers), you’ve likely tasted the delicious apple cider they generously vol-unteer to donate for the enjoyment of folks at SOTH. Currently, they are pruning the trees for this year’s crop and heartily welcome volunteer hands to help prune or stop by to see the gorgeous blooms in May. The Farmer’s stand is located at 5682 Hwy 167, Hubertus. It is just down the hill from Holy Hill. Barb’s cousins get together and make apple sauce for the grandchildren who have never tasted store-bought ap-plesauce! The Lesch’s also harvest honey, and their bees are now vacationing in Florida and will be back to polli-nate the apples in May. God has blessed them with many years of bountiful crops to share with the community.

Here is a Quick Apple Cake Recipe Ingredients: Cooking spray, 8 tbsp. butter; divided, 1 ½ c. sugar; divided, 1 egg, 1 c. flour, 1 tsp. baking soda, ½ tsp. cinnamon, ¼ tsp. salt, 2 large tart apples; cored and chopped, 1 c. coarsely chopped walnuts, 2 tsp. cornstarch, ¼ c. evaporated milk, 1 tsp. lemon juice and 1 tsp. vanilla. Instructions: Preheat oven to 350. Coat a 9-inch square pan with cooking spray. Cream 5 tbsp. butter and 1 c. sugar. Add egg and beat well. Stir in flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, apples and walnuts. Batter will be stiff. Spoon into prepared pan; smooth top. Bake about 35 min. Combine remaining 3 tbsp. butter, 1/2 c. sugar, cornstarch and evaporated milk in a saucepan; bring to a boil and boil for 2 min, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, stir in lem-on juice and vanilla. Pour over hot cake. Serve warm.

Servant’s Heart: Soles for Jesus By Cheryl Bousley When my cousin, Sandy Gunderson, first told me about her daughter Jennifer's mission trip to Africa 7 years ago, I was excited for Jen. God certainly had a wonderful plan for Diane, Jennifer and the other gals on that trip!! It has been thrilling to see God at work in the lives of these Christian women, and what an impact they are all making in the lives of those they now serve in Africa through the Soles for Jesus ministry. It is about serving and spreading the gospel. Through the generosity of many, the gift of shoes helps to bring "souls" to Jesus! I am privileged to be able to contribute to their mission! As the Holy Spirit guides them in the future, I thank them for their obedience. My prayers are with them. May our Lord & Savior continue to bless them, and keep them strong in adversity.

Serenity Inn: Time for a personality review?

During the dinner discussion in February, the residents were challenged with the question: How does your per-sonality change during addiction? Before I share their responses, you need to know how they perceived them-selves prior to addiction. In simple one word critiques they said joyful, happy, optimistic, lively, sociable, caring and compassionate, good characteristics which I believe most of us would be quick to see in ourselves. But, as you read this are you thinking there is much more to me? I have many good characteristics, but I also have a few I am not proud of and even worse I have some I am ashamed of. Be assured you are not alone; we all have faults we need to deal with! The question is how do we deal with them – accept, ignore or overcome? The residents, through the Serenity Inn program, do not have the option to ignore or accept they must overcome their negative personal characteristics if they are going to be successful in recov-ery and in life. So how did they see themselves in addic-tion? Again, the powerful and as expected negative re-sponses included: manipulator, savage, loner, self-destructive, depressed, ruthless, guilty, paranoid and hopeless. Do you relate to any of these? So now what? There is hope not only for the residents of Serenity, but for you as well if you are willing to face your shortcom-ings and put your trust and hope in Jesus Christ. Does your personality need a little work? It’s time to: pray – seek, knock, ask; and trust in your God.

Thank you to our cooks: Sue Dix, Sherry Levitsch, Bill Martin, Debi Mueller, Deb Taulman and Lorraine Bahr for a great meal. Thank you to the dinner fellowship guests: Dan Berg, Sherry Levitsch, Bill and Kathy Martin (first time guests) and Lorraine and Jim Bahr for making the trip.

Upcoming Serenity Inn dates (food and/or fellowship): Apr 4th, May 2nd, Jun 6th and July 4th.
