Welcome Webmaster Joe Kotzan

I am from Clarkston, MI

I took up watercolor painting as a hobby a number of

years ago thinking that upon retiring I would be able to

spend lots of time painting but as most plans go (Man

plans and God laughs), it has yet to work out that way. I

have four young grandchildren and an elderly mother

that seem to take up most of my time. But I still manage

periods of painting time and learning time. I love landscape painting (and

throw in an occasional painting of the grandchildren). I thoroughly enjoy being

a member of the MWCS and appreciate experiencing and learning from the

art from all of the extremely talented members. I hope someday to be able to

paint to the level of this gifted group.

I want to become more involved with this group, participating however I can. I

am very excited about the opportunity to assist in the Web page and will work

hard to learn the tools and keep our site up to the high standards set by Den-

ise Willing-Booher in creating this site.

Geoff McCormack

Aqueous Media Workshop “The rest of us show up and get to work; everything grows out of the work.”

Be prepared for a different approach to water media in Geoffrey McCormack’s latest three-day workshop at the MWCS. Geoff is an emerging master of aqueous media, best known for his Rock series and Cardboard Box series: images with startling realistic textures, colors, perspective, lighting and shadows. His compositions form an intri-guing interplay of shapes and contrasting values, often with objects appearing to float on multiple planes. 2016 saw Geoff shift his focus to an abstract series using all of the features of his preceding series. He will share studio practices and techniques he developed or learned over fifty years as a professional artist. He will demonstrate an array of new materials, tools and techniques, revealing just how and why he creates such distinctive paintings. Geoff will focus on designing paintings with an engaging point of view, using rich color triads, unique textural effects, and dramatic lighting. You will combine these techniques and tools with your favorite aqua-media in a series of exercises and paintings. You will get several demos daily, personal instruction and critiques, plus plenty of painting time. Advanced beginners to masters will benefit from applying these new techniques and materials. Suitable for abstract and representational painters. Special masking materials and films will be supplied by the instructor.

Thank you to everyone who submitted to the Michigan Water Color Socie-

ty's 71st Annual Exhibition. We had a great turnout with 109 artists enter-

ing 199 entries. This year we started our online submission option and

were thrilled to see how many people took advantage of the easy to use

online submission process. The talent that was entered this year was

phenomenal. Our juror, Geoff McCormack, had a very hard task deciding

on the final 63 pieces that will be in the Annual Exhibition. Thank you for

another year of commitment to Michigan Water Color Society and your passion for watercolor. -
