The Papandrea family, from left to right: Mary Carbone, Joseph, Vincent, Joseph S., andAnna Papandrea. Participated, but not pictured: Rocco Pepe and Bella Pepe.

Originally from a town near Calabria, Italy, and later Brooklyn, New York, thePapandrea family has created elaborate prescepi for four generations. As aboy, Joseph Papandrea recalls moving out of his bedroom each Christmas sea-son so that the family could create an elaborate presepe that took up most ofthe room. When the Papandrea family moved to Utica in 1958, they brought the precepetradition with them. Villagers, animals, angels, and the Holy Family populate alandscape that is made from scratch each year. The Papandreas have gener-ously recreated a smaller version of their family presepe to share with ourcommunity this year.Enjoy this local presepe when you visit the exhibition The Italian Presepe: Cul-ture Landscapes of the Soul, on view through January 10, 2016.

Thank you to our exhibition sponsorsNBT Bank and Charles A. Gaetano Construction Corp.

The exhibition originated at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery, College of the HolyCross, Worcester, Mass., where it was generously supported by: the Dean’s Office;

the Committee on Scholarship at the College of the Holy Cross; The McFarland Centerfor Religion, Ethics and Culture; and the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery.

MWPAI relies on and appreciates the generous and committed supportof members, donors and corporate sponsors. As the year draws to aclose, we offer heartfelt thanks to you for your role in ensuring that

we fulfill our mission to advance the appreciation, understanding and enjoy-ment of the arts. This kind of generosity, which began with our founding fami-lies and has continued through generations of community donors, enablesMWPAI to offer exhibitions, concerts, educational programs, art classes, andso much more.

The year has been filled with extraordinary highlights. We have been sopleased to share Monet to Matisse: The Age of French Impressionism, one ofthe most successful exhibitions in our history, with art lovers who have visitedus from across the United States. Keyboard Conversations with Jeffrey Siegelcontinue to delight new and returning audiences while the Concerts in theCourt provided an intimate setting for such outstanding performances as theMarcus Roberts Trio and the Hot Club of San Francisco. The School of Art hasadded many new courses to the Community Arts Education program and ThePrattMWP College of Art and Design welcomed its largest freshman class infive years!

December is the ideal time to make a tax-deductible gift to MWPAI that is, inturn, a gift to your community. There are many ways to join the circle of sup-port that improves the quality of life that MWPAI endeavors to provide.

• A gift to the Annual Fund provides ongoing support of all of our endeavors.

• An annual gift of $1,000 or more entitles you to membership in the Fountain Elms Society, where you can enjoy many exclusive benefits.

• Gifts of appreciated securities enables donors to take a tax deduction for the full market value of the stock on the day it is transferred to the Institute, therefore avoiding any capital gains tax on the appreciation of that stock – gifts that are beneficial to both the donors and MWPAI.

• Exhibitions, concerts and other special programs offer sponsorship opportunities for individuals or businesses at different levels.

• Charitable Gift Annuities provide immediate tax benefits to donors accompanied by fixed annuity payments for life at an attractive interest rate.

• A gift that will satisfy your IRA Required Minimum Distribution for the end of the year without generating taxable income.

The coming year promises to build on our recent achievements. SelectedShorts will return for another popular evening of live storytelling. The RootSculpture Court will be transformed by the installation of Terry Slade’s medita-tive and colorful suspended glass creation, Earth Mantra. Our special summerexhibition will feature the vibrant, worldly images of acclaimed National Geo-graphic photographer Steve McCurry. The School of Art will welcome evenmore students in both Community Arts Education and to PrattMWP College ofArt and Design.

We truly appreciate your consideration of a gift at this time and offer sincerethanks for your role in making MWPAI a community asset, a community gem.
