In the UK today, there are many diff erent kinds of food in the supermarket. People buy tomatoes in December and strawberries in January. In the UK, this kind of food only grows in the summer, so in autumn, winter and spring, it comes from other countries. Supermarkets also have fruit and vegetables that never grow in the UK, like oranges and bananas.
Let’s look at a typical example. In the photos on page 23, the lamb comes from New Zealand, the tomatoes come from Italy, the beans from Kenya, the grapes from Egypt, the pears from Argentina and the bananas from India. All this food travels thousands of miles to your dinner plate. Only the potatoes come from the UK. is dinner has a total of 80,000 food miles.
Lorries, ships and planes use a lot of fuel to carry food around the world. at’s a problem for the planet.
Here’s what some of our readers say:
My dad’s growing potatoes, beans and tomatoes in our garden this year. If you can, it’s a good idea to grow your own vegetables. Tom, Bristol
Mum goes shopping at our local farm shop every week – it’s important to think about food miles – and it’s really cheap! Gemma, Brighton
We live in a fl at in London. We haven’t got a garden so our food probably comes from diff erent countries. Sometimes it isn’t possible to think about the planet!Jon, London
