Use focal length

Same place, different imageNot every lens is suitable for every situation – without zoom or the ability to change lenses, a photographer is limited. Zooming gives flexibility which is especially important on holiday – in our example, the photographer in Southwest Australia was able to react quickly and switch between a wide-angled beach shot and a close-up of the kangaroo.

With the right camera and the right lens, you can capture your best memories in all their glory

Taking pictures at night

Ambient lightFor most photographers, postcard depicting motifs in the sun and cloudless skies aren’t a big challenge. Unique lighting makes a picture really stand out. Tip: Take some time to take photos in the evening, when the lights are on everywhere. The sky should be deep blue instead of black. The best results are achieved in low light. Cameras with a large sensor and image stabilisation make photos in low light easily achievable.

Focus manually

Play with the sharpnessJust point and shoot. This might work for many subjects, but for others, it is worth thinking about where the focus should lie – and what may also be deliberately out of focus. The eye of the beholder will be directed to the essentials, creating a more striking, professional looking image. Tip: Focus on your subject manually – with a little practice and patience, it’s a great way of pinpointing your focus.

High point of viewTaking photos from a picturesque vantage point is especially worthwhile. An overview of the city gives a welcome change of perspective in any photo book. It’s best to find out in advance if tripods are allowed (usually not) and if you’ll be outdoors, so you don’t have to take photos through a window.

The secret to great photos

We show you how an ordinary image becomes an outstanding photo.

DiffuserThe tent wall scatters the incoming light and

illuminates the tent interior without hard shadows. In addition, the cosy red colour from the tent walls

gives the whole picture a pleasant touch.

FrameThe tent exit works as a frame and

encloses the actual subject – the

silhouette of a man. The outline directs

the viewer's gaze to the subject.

SilhouetteWhen objects or people are between

a light source and the camera, silhouettes appear. It also gives the

scene a mystical feel.

Foreground For more depth we recommend

you always have an object in the foreground. Stones,

blades of grass or even – as here – a sleeping bag on the

tent floor at a low perspective are perfect.

3 To use a backgroundHave you found a background that

fits the theme of your CEWE PHOTOBOOK? Simply click and drag it into the working area with the mouse button held down. Your chosen background will then be added to the page.Tip: If you want to use the same background colour throughout your book, there is a button just below the background templates in the left column which will fill every page with your chosen background.

1 To design a bookOpen the design software and select

your desired product. The window in the middle shows a blank layout with white pages and placeholders for photos. Each individual page of your book can have a different background colour. In addition, you can design an individual background for your cover as well. You can use the bar below to select your pages.

5 Use your own photos as a background

You can also use your own photos as a background. First, you need to click on the “Photos & Videos” tab on the left, then select your chosen photo. Directly below the photo selector, there are four different functions that allow you to integrate your own photos as backgrounds in your CEWE PHOTOBOOK. You can choose if you’d like to put your photo either on the left or right pages, across a double page spread or on every page in your book.

2 Background selection

In the bar on the left, you can click on the “Background” button. The window displays all the backgrounds stored on your computer. Pastel-coloured templates are very popular because they give a softer contrast. Some photographers prefer black backgrounds to help bring out the colour and depth of their photographs.Tip: If you want to narrow down the choices, you can select a specific category by clicking on the drop-down menu.

Make a good first impression with a creative cover design

Creating a stunning cover is easy with the CEWE Design Software. Follow our handy tips and advice, and you can design a cover

that’s as beautiful as your best photographs.

They say ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’, but when it comes to CEWE PHOTOBOOKS, we’ll make an exception. Your favourite memories deserve to be presented in a book that does them justice, and the first impression your photo book makes is with the cover.

With our CEWE Design Software, every cover is unique. You can enjoy complete control over your use of pictures, text, colours, fonts and design details. Every facet of the design is down to you, with limitless creative options at your fingertips. We’ve put together a few pointers to help you get started.

Clipart Our CEWE Design Software comes with

a wide array of clipart already installed. Choose from fun novelty designs, or more abstract shapes and lines. In our example, we’ve used rows of wavy lines for a relaxed, modern effect. Notice how the placing of the Clipart draws the eye to the book’s title, and makes creative use of the blank space.

Colour is crucial Colour is one of the first things we

notice when we look at a book, so don’t underestimate the importance of your colour choices. If you choose to use more than one photograph, be sure to choose pictures that compliment each other, and bring the same colour palette through in your design elements. As you can see in our example, the mild purple-pink tone from the photographs is reflected in the rectangle around the title. This helps to keep the overall look harmonious.

Highlights Add an extra special finishing touch to

your cover with our luxurious Highlights. These additions have an irresistibly tactile raised effect, similar to embossing. They’re available in gold, silver or clear gloss. In our example, we’ve used gold embossing on the title. This makes the title stand out, and the golden colour compliments the sunny style of the photographs.

Repetition Repetition is one of the simplest but

most effective design techniques. In our cover example, the same piece of clipart is used multiple times. We also repeat the same colours, with the pink and the gold that are prevalent in the photographs. This helps the whole cover feel cohesive and well put together.

In a serendipitous turn of events, Nic planned a

stop at the Kentish seaside location while route planning a road trip. Her interest was piqued by the town’s famously good oysters, but from the moment she drove through the winding main street, she felt an instant affinity with the place. 

“I had no idea at the time that Whitstable would be such a big holiday love. But when the day came, and we snaked our way through the small main street, I began to feel full of excitement and anticipation. I couldn’t wait to discover everything there!”

It’s easy to see why Nic loves this gem of a town so much. Whitstable has escaped being heavily commercialised, and with its working harbour and winding streets, has hung on to a traditional seaside feel.

The town is known for its seafood, especially

shellfish - great for foodies! It also boasts colourful rows of seafront houses and glorious sunsets, providing lots of opportunities for keen photographers.

“The little coastal town has an irresistible radiance of creativity, joie de vivre, and relaxation. It turned out to be an El Dorado for foodies like me! People who love to enjoy local delicacies.”

Nic understands the value of sharing your passions, and she loved the small Kentish town so much that she decided to commemorate the experience by creating her own CEWE PHOTOBOOK. As we all know, enthusiasm is infectious! Many of Nic’s friends had expressed an interest in visiting the Kentish town on their own travels. So she created a food-lover’s guide to share with them, with tributes to all of her favourite cafes and bars in the area.

Whitsable LoveSometimes falling in love with a place feels almost

as exciting as falling in love with a person. Nic Hildebrandt of LuziaPimpinella.com tells us all about

how the seaside town of Whitstable captured her heart, and the CEWE PHOTOBOOK she created to

share it with her friends.

Carefully consider your font

choice. “I use a maximum

of two fonts throughout the

whole book, and I love it if the

fonts fit in with the visual style

of the photographs.”

Include useful information

such as opening times,

addresses and menu

recommendations. So your

travel guide is practical as well

as beautiful!

Share your unique love story with a

Getting engaged is an exciting life event for anyone. What better way to share your big news than by getting your story into your hands, ready to show to your loved ones?

Louis and Sarah are the snap happy couple behind SaltandCoconuts.co.uk, one of our favourite travel blogs. When Louis recently popped the big question on a trip to Nepal,

they couldn’t wait to share their exciting news with friends and family.

As a pair of globetrotting explorers, Louis wanted to incorporate this shared passion for travel into his proposal.

“I knew when I proposed, that it needed to be whilst on an adventure,” Louis tells us, and when the couple were considering Nepal as a destination for their next big holiday, he immediately knew this would be the perfect location to make the moment extra special. “Before we even started booking the flights I began organising the proposal! The trip was unbelievable, and the day turned out perfectly.”

“This was one of our favourite trips so far, notably because we got engaged but also because of the beautiful landscapes of the country, the great food and lovely people.”

With plenty of beautiful photographs to choose from, and so many stories to share, they took the opportunity to commemorate the occasion with a beautiful CEWE PHOTOBOOK.

“It’s great that we get to share the book with others and allow them to relive some of that excitement with us.”

We had a chat with Louis about the creation of his extra special photo book. Every CEWE PHOTOBOOK is as unique as the experience it encapsulates, and Louis wanted to tell his story with text as well as pictures.

“There were so many words that could be used to describe our Nepal adventure, and I really wanted to include as many of these as possible. I think using the text feature helps to bring meaning to the photos and, certainly in our instance, add another dimension to the photo book.”

Louis also made use of our video feature, which cleverly allows you to add video footage to your photo book by use of a QR code.

“One of my favourite features was definitely having the opportunity to incorporate videos into the photo book. It’s great that not only can you see pictures and read text, but you can also bring it all to life with a video! I was so happy that I managed to get some drone footage into the book.”

We loved how Louis and Sarah’s CEWE PHOTOBOOK is so full of personality and character. From the beautiful photographs, through to the creative design choices and the words they shared, it tells their own unique story.

Q&A with Chris HudsonArt director, National Geographic Traveller

Can you tell us a bit about National Geographic Traveller’s

photography competition? We’ve been running our competition for seven years now and we’re really looking forward to next year’s competition in partnership with CEWE. We have great plans for the competition and are excited to see what our readers submit — every year the standard gets higher and we’re amazed with the levels of creativity and endeavour on show.

Why did you choose Rashid’s landscape shot as the winner of the 2017 competition? Rashid’s image stood out the first time we saw it. The judges were all in awe of the patience he must have needed to wait for the moment when the composition and light came together exactly as he wanted it. The perfect weather and light help frame this spectacular scene perfectly — Rashid’s photograph is a deserving winner.

What’s it like working with top travel photographers?It’s an honour to work with such talented photographers every day and it’s my job to do their hard work justice by helping to document the fantastic stories they capture.

Over the space of nine months, lovers of photography from all over the world had the chance to submit their photos to CEWE, to take part in the Our World is Beautiful contest. With 183,862 incredible photographs to choose from, our jury had quite a big task in choosing a winner, as Our World Is Beautiful 2017 became the largest open-submission photography competition in the world. Professional or amateur, with decades of photography experience or holding their very first DSLR, everyone was invited to take part. A diverse variety of photographs were entered across the six categories: Sport, People, Landscapes, Architecture, Traffic and Infrastructure, and Nature. We couldn’t be more proud of the results.“We expected a strong response, but that we would end up hosting the largest photo contest in the world? That was a positive surprise!” says Dr. Rolf Hollander, sponsor of the CEWE Our World Is Beautiful photography contest. “The international scope of the participants from 94 countries shows that the love of photography knows no bounds.” Overall Winner, Landscape Category WinnerThe overall winner of the CEWE Our World Is Beautiful 2017 competition and landscape category winner is Janne Kahila from Finland. Janne entered this breath-taking photograph of one of his favourite places, the peak of Kalso Island in the Faroe Islands. Land and sea, light and shadows, and the contrast of a small chapel on a dramatic hilltop all came together to create this stunning, visually dynamic photograph. Our jury were particularly impressed by Janne’s ability to portray such a vast towering landscape in just one picture. Through his lens, we’re allowed to experience the beauty and majesty of the scene as though we’re there in person. It’s an impressive feat of both technical and artistic ability.

1: Winner of the People category: The winning photo in the People category was taken by Florian Bernhardt from Germany. Our panel of judges were charmed by the sense of candid joy captured in the child’s eyes.

2: Winner of the Nature category: Taken by Terezie Fojtovà from the Czech Republic, the winning photo of our Nature category shows a serene landscape interrupted by an almost comical addition of running sheep.

3: Winner of the Sport category: For the winning photo in the sport category, Christoph Grubich combines perfect timing with beautiful visual elements . This image of his daughter diving into the pool is a testament to his technical skill and creative eye.

If last year’s winners have left you feeling

inspired, you’ll be excited to hear that

our popular photography competition

is returning. So dust off your lenses and

charge your batteries, because this year the

competition is bigger and better than ever!

We’ve simplified the name to CEWE Photo

Awards, but rest assured it’s still the same

incredible contest. After the success of

last year’s competition, we wanted to give

you even more opportunities to express

your creativity. That’s why we’ve added

four new categories to the competition,

giving us a total of ten. So whether your

best photography is inspired by sport,

architecture, food or humour, there’s a

category to suit your muse.

We’ve stepped up our prizes too, with

a 1st place prize of a one-of-a-kind trip

of your choice valued at 15,000 Euros,

photo equipment worth 7,500 Euros, and

CEWE photo products worth 2,500 Euros.

There’s also hundreds of runner up prizes,

comprising of photography equipment

(for those that place 2nd to 30th) and

CEWE products (for those that place 31st

to 1000th). Plus we’ll be choosing monthly

winners from our UK entries and handing

out extra prizes in between.

The competition will be running until May

2019 and you can enter multiple photos, so

there’s plenty of opportunity to share the

TIPA: CEWE is voted the best photo print service worldwide

The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) award is recognised as the most prestigious award for photo and imaging products worldwide. Award decisions are based on regular product tests, carried out by an independent panel and serve to inform readers about innovations in the industry. CEWE was granted the TIPA World Award in the “Best Photo Print Service” category. It was the option to further enhance CEWE PHOTOBOOK covers with special effects that convinced the international jury. Gold, silver and gloss embossed elements can be added to enhance the individually designed Hardcovers to provide a luxurious and unique finish.
