Page 2: My management philosophy

My management philosophy comes from my values, things I have learned in classes, my experiences from work, and most importantly my experience with people. Being in the PRT field we are first and foremost people people.

Theory's and models are great guidelines but sometimes situations arise that don’t quite fit into models and theory's.

Page 7: My management philosophy

That’s why it is important to look at each situation with a fresh perspective and handle accordingly.

But don’t you worry!

There’s a model for that!

Situational LeadershipFacilitating/counseling

High R & Low TShared decision making through two way communication. Leader only facilitates the process because followers have the ability and knowledge to do the task.

Selling/coachingHigh T & High R

Most of the direction provided by the leader but direction is provided through two way communication and emotional support. Followers psychologically buy into decisions that have to be made.

DelegatingLow R & Low T

Let followers run their own show. The leader delegates because the followers are highly competent, willing, and motivated to direct their own behavior and outcomes.

Telling/directingHigh T & Low R

One-way communication where the leader defines the roles of followers and tells them what, how, when, and where various tasks should be performed.

It is important to not only be a manager but be a leader and inspire those around you.

“Managers do things right, leaders do the right thing. In other words, Bennis and Nanus were saying that as a manager you could do everything correctly according to procedure and still be missing the boat.”

-Eric K. Shinseki

The values I base my leadership after are. . .

Page 14: My management philosophy

Flexibility

• Being able to make adjustments when needed, and not let it throw you off your game.

Page 15: My management philosophy

Integrity

Do what you say, and say what you do. Then you are able to lead by example. I believe this is the most influential way to be a leader to those around you.

Page 16: My management philosophy

Team Work

• Not many organizations operate with just one employee. You must be able to work together to reach your organization’s goals. Even when that means putting others before yourself.

Page 17: My management philosophy

Honesty

• It is important to have an honest and open relationship with those you work with. I believe by doing this you are able to have a more productive relationship.

Page 18: My management philosophy

An Attitude of Play

• It is important to be able to laugh, most importantly at yourself. When situations get a little to serious than needed it can create unnecessary tension. It is a glass half full attitude that is needed.

Page 19: My management philosophy

Passion

• It is important to me that other employees and myself truly care for what we are doing. You can only motivate someone extrinsically for so long. Part of it must be intrinsic. Not just for others but for myself as well.

Page 20: My management philosophy

As a manager it is important to understand how to motivate not only your employees but understand how you yourself are motivated.

Page 22: My management philosophy

What motivates me is intrinsic and extrinsic. I need a little bit of both. I can’t be motivated by extrinsic alone, I need to be motivated intrinsically as well to perform my best.

Page 23: My management philosophy

I think this is true for many people who work in PRT. Money and rewards can only motivate us so much. At the end of the day we need to feel good about what we’ve done that day. We need to feel that we have had a positive impact on someone's life.
