Several months ago, Mr. HenryPlummer, of Clements, Cal.,' whois subject to cramps, was taken witha severe attack. He had been ac-

BERETANIA STREET.

The contemplated improvement of

Beretania street seems doomed to be

indefinitely delayed of thorough ac-

complishment ou two accounts. One

obstacle is the neglect or refusal of

some of the proprietors to set back

their fences to the new line. Theother is the keeping of the quarryrailroad track on the street by theGovernment. At the town end of

the widened street is now to be seena stretch of macadamized roadway, making a respectable thoroughfaresuch as the whole street should be.

The first break in this stretch is at apoint near the Armory, where themacadamizing operations are goingon without waiting for several pro-

prietors to conform to the widenedplan. The result is an unsightlyprotrusion of a somewhat raggedfrontage into the street. TowardPunahou several proprietors are de-

linquent in pulling their premisesinto line with the improved plan. This is strange in view of the en-

hanced value that is bound to accrueto their properties by the completionof this important main thoroughfare. They are standing in the way of one

of the largest city improvements everdevised in Honolulu, and obstruct-

ing an inevitable accomplishmentthat might as well happen now as

years later.Perhaps those who persist in the

obstruction are wailing for the re-

moval of the railroad track before-mentione- d

by the Government. Ifso, it is to lie hoped that the removalof the track will not be delayed. The thing is an eyesore and a sourceof danger to vehicles and those usingthem, as well as an embargo againstthe free access to their propertywhich is the right of owners on thatside of the street.' The track shouldbe taken up as fast as the macadam-

izing operations proceed towardPunahou, and theGovernment shouldat the same time take possession ofall the ground required for the com-

pletion of the improvement. It istime that this now ancient publicwork should be speedily brought to

the desired consumn.ation.

THE ROYAL TOUR.

Her Majesty and party returnedto town by the 5 o'clock train yester-day afternoon, from the state tour toseveral points on Ihis island.

The royal party reached Wahilmat 1 :30 o'clock Monday aftcrnuon. On the way thither Her Ma'jeslyformally opened the new bridge atWainiea. A riding party of 50 or 60native women dressed in red pa-u- s

from Waialua 'met the Queen at thebridge, after the ceremony escortingthe royal party to Waialua. Rev. E.S. Timoteo was marshal of the pro-cession. At the opening of thebiidge a native clergyman offeredprayer. Her Majesty broke a bottleof champagne on the bridge and pro-claimed it open for public traffic. The Royal Hawaiian Band played" Hawaii Ponoi."

The Queen rested during the after-noon and evening at Waialua, withthe exception of receiving a numberof foreign ladies. A public receptionwas held from 11 to 12:45 Tuesdayat the church. Addresses were de-

livered by Her Majesly, PremierParker, Hon. John A. Cummins,Capt. E. K. Lilikalani, Hon. D. W.Pua, Rev. E. S. Timoteo, Mr. MalioeMr. Asa Kaulia. The band wasin attendance, playing Hawaii Ponoion the arrival and departure of theQuern, also a hymn tune in the ex-

ercises. Prayer was offered by thepastor of the church, and there wassiiiiiing by the church choir.

At two o'clock a luau was given atthe Queen's residence, at which alarge number of guests were madewelcome and happy.

Tuesday evening a reception wastendered to Iler Majesty by Mr.Robert Ilalstead at his residence.Arrangements were brilliant andeverything passed off happily. TheQueen was attended by Princes

IMPROVED CANE SUCERS.

The Union Iron Works have com-

pleted a eutie sliccr, and have an-

other iieunng completion, for use in

connection with tbe diffusion processin tbe Ewa plantation mill.the completed machine was runningal the works, and went as smoothlyand almost as noiselessly as a sewingmachine. It is of the same kind us

that used at Haniakuapoko, where ithas proved much superior to theslicers imported with tin fi t d ffu-sio- n

plant introduced in !leTiiis slicer is an invention of Mr. J.N. S. Williams, president and mana-ger of tlie Union Iron Works Co.

The knives are set laterally some-

thinglike plane irons in the periph-ery of a large open barred cylinder, which is bisected with a solid diskso as to make a chamber ineach end. Travelers carry tbe caneto the cylinder, dumping the sticksend on against the knives.

The cyliuder performs 125 revolulions to the minute, and the tine-slic-

chips of cane fall inside of it.There the chips would be held bycentrifugal force till the. chamberswould be jammed full, but tor a de-

vice called a thrower attached to thedisk which tosses them out in asteady stream at each end.

Tlie slicers for the Ewu mill haveindependent engines uM ached tothem, instead of relying on powertransmitted by belts from the mainengine of the mill. This is cak-- atedto be a great advantage, us whensteam g ts low, :is often happens ina sugar mill, is the very lime thatthe grinding or the diffusion iswanted to be pushed, so as to gel anample supply of the trash for fuel. These slicers for Kwa are each guar-anteed for a capacily of 10 tons ofcane au hour, but they are fully ex-

pected to gel away wiifi 12 Ions anhour. The completed machine isabout to be shipped to the mill, butbefore the second is sent away it willbe tried at the Union Iron Workswith a ton of cane.

Parts of the Ewa diffusion plant incourse of construction at the Worksare two pans one of feet diam-eter for No. 1 sugar, the other of 9feet diameter for lower grades. There is also approaching completiona four-roll- er maceration mill, for ex-

pressing all the moisture from theexuausUd chips, to fit them for fuelIt is equal in every way lo a icgulargrinding mill apart from the diffusionprocess. The contract lo furnish theentire plant for the Ewa PlantationCo.'s mill is well advanced towardfulfilment. The batteries, boilersand main engine are in the building, allowing tbe roof to be put on, whichhas been done. It is expected thatsteam will be got up in October.

THE GREAT SARAH.

Sarah Bernhardt, over whom theAustralian play-goe- rs have gonewild, will appear in "Cwnille" althe Hawaiian Opera House on thearrival of the Mariposa the 26lli inst.,provided the required number ofseats be sold in the meantime. Manyheld their tickets over from the timethey were disappointed, when thegreat actress was on her way to theColonies, and seats have been sellingfairly well since the latest announce-ment. The date is approaching, however, and a certain revenue must beobtained in advance to assure a per-formance. It is very seldom that aworld celebrity appears in Honolulu, and there is no actress in tlie worldranking higher than Sarah Bern-hardt. The opportunity should betaken advantage of iu good season, for the circumstances are such thatif there is to be a performance therewill be few if any seats left in thehouse at the date.

There is no curve at an ai, meforefoot. In explaining these bows, which are an entirely new departurein yacht-buildin- Mr. Herreshoffsaid, long before his yacht hadtouched water, when surorise was

expressed at the hard curves of theload-wat- er line: "lliat manes verylittle difference. The water does notgo that way." His theory was thatmost of the water displaced goes un-

derneath the boat, not around thesides, and hence he made the curvesbelow the water line as easy aspossible. The live trials which theGloriana has had, in all kinds ofweather, have demonstrated the wis-

dom of his view. The yacht sailed staway from all competitors so com

markable achievements will not beoverlooked by English yachtsmen.
