2. In this presentation I will be looking at thefront cover, contents page and the doublepage spread that I created for my musicbased magazine. I will be analysing all the pages and howthese pages use, develop and challengeoriginal conventions of magazines and inparticular rap magazines as this is thegenre of the magazine that I created. 3. I will be going through each page and highlighting each feature and stating why I included that particular feature, what inspired me to include that particular feature and while doing this I will be going back to the conventions of rap magazines and comparing. 4. Here is the front cover I have created. As you can see it is eye catching, as the colours are bright and I have done this to make it stand out against other magazines within the shop. 5. This is the title, as youcan see it stands outagainst the rest of themagazine, and this hasbeen done to make thetitle stand out make themagazine look unique. As you can see the textis large compared to therest of the text on thepage and the colourstands out against theimages. 6. Alsoas you can see the title is tilted to the side and this challenges the main conventions or rap based magazines in particular, because they usually have the title horizontal at the top, and mostly from left to right (where the barcode is) 7. Asyou can see the barcode is located at the top of the page, and I chose to put it up here, as it is out of the way from the main bulk of content on the page which means it doesnt distract the viewer from looking at everything. 8. And the barcodeplacement challenges theconventions of rapmagazines becauseusually it is located at thebottom of the page eitheron the left or the right, butas I said earlier I placed ittheir as it was out of theway but still the barcodeneeds to be present on themagazine to make it lookprofessional. 9. As you can see the datethe magazine wasreleased and the issuenumber is located underthe barcode. Now in mostmagazines the date andissue number are usuallylocated on the contentspages; but on othermagazines (not just musicbased magazines) thesedetails are present on thefront page underneath thebarcode., 10. Which I feel is a good addition as it lets the reader know how old this particular issue is without them having to open up the magazine, plus it gives them a sense of what issue number this particular magazine is. 11. The main article title is statedhere, and as you can see it hasbeen placed so that the faces ofthe artists in the image are stillvisible. The text ranges in fontsizes and colour, and I did this tohighlight the main part of thearticle (in yellow) with some of theless important text in black andconsiderably smaller than themain title; and the artists name isin large text, but is still black. Thismeans that all the audiencesattention will be focused on theyellow text and the image on thepage before they even startreading into what the main articleis about. 12. Usually the main article withina magazine is highlighted inthe front page in eye catchingtext which is about the samesize as the magazine titlestext; I have avoided thisparticular convention becauseI feel that the magazine title isimportant and should stand outdue to it being like a brandinglabel on the magazine, plus Iwant the viewer to first look atthe title of the magazine beforethen looking at the imagefollowed by the main articletitle, and it has been placed insuch a position to make thispossible. 13. Here is the panel section thatwas one of my own ideas, as Ifelt when magazines hadother articles named all overthe page and there was noorder to the front covers whichmade them seem messy andun professional to me. I decided to introduce a panelat the bottom of the page, which would contain all theother features of themagazine including otherimportant articles within themagazine as well ascompletion information. 14. The inclusion of this bar alsomeans that this section is almostseparate to the rest of the pageand all the text is not spreadaround meaning that the majorityof the audiences attention will beon the image rather than the textspread around the page. This bar is something that is notseen in other magazines of thisgenre and I obtained the idea ofthis bar from a newspaper as I feltthat I gave order to the paper andallowed for the focus of the mainimage on the paper as well askeeping the content on the pageneat and tidy meaning that thefront cover will maintain aprofessional look and feel. 15. The main image located on thepage is supporting the mainarticle and is a image of RizzleKicks. As you can see it is theonly image on the page andhas been made large andcentred on the page meaningthat it will be one of the firstfeatures of the page which willcatch the audiences attention.I have also added a artisticeffect to this image to give it acartoony look and feel makingthe image look like it is part ofthe graffiti wall in thebackground. 16. As fat as the conventionsof images on magazinefront covers go I feel thatmine ticks all the boxes, asit is a large image on thepage which is a mid bodyshot of the artist (or in thecase of my magazineartists) and is the centre ofattention on the front coveras well as being a suitablesupporting image for themain article within themagazine 17. I feel that my front cover is professional and looks good,it has all the main conventions of magazines as well asbeing able to maintain some of the main conventions ofmagazines within the same genre as itself. I feel that themagazine front cover will appeal to the target audiencebecause it is eye catching and bright, but not so muchthat it looks childish. I also feel that the colours used inthe main text on the front cover as well as the image areeye catching and represents the magazine as well as thesocial groups within. I feel that the front cover has a certain order to it, aseverything isnt scattered around the page andeverything has been sectioned in a sense which givesthe magazine front cover a professional look withoutspoiling the overall look and still maintaining its appeal tothe target audience. 18. Here is the contents page Ihave created for myproduct, as you can see itcontains all the article titleson one side of the page, aswell as social features, andsimilarly to the front coverthere is an image of anartist which supportsanother main article in themagazine which is in largerfont compared to the restand which isnt in the tableof contents. 19. This is the main bulk of text onthe page, and this is whatmakes the contents page, inthis text there is information onall the articles in this particularissue of the magazine. I haveused the same type of font thathas been used on the rest ofthe magazine and I havehighlighted the page numbersin yellow for two reasons: one,to match the colour scheme ofthe overall magazine and two,to make the page numbersstand out so someone who isreading will be able to seewhich articles are on aparticular page. 20. The placement of the mainbulk of text has beenplaced on the upper leftside of the page as afterlooking into theconventions of musicbased magazine I foundthat most rap basedmagazines have theircontents section here, andthis was constantly seen ina variety of differentmagazines so I felt thiswas a convention I had touse in my product. 21. Here is the transparent panel, which was also seen on the frontcover; on this page it containssocial features which expand theaudiences experience as they willbe able to go online and connectto my magazine in many differentways and keep up dated withwhat is happening with themagazine as well as informationon what may be upcoming in thefuture. I have decided to includethese features on my contentspage for reasons explained as Ifeel this is a great addition andthe audience will feel moreconnectivity with the magazineand they will be able to stayconnected. 22. Once again I have includedwebsite information on the page, and this has been done so thatthe audience can go on thewebsite to look at more articlesand other things such as order thenext issue. I have placed the webaddress in a out of the wayplace, as I feel if I had put itanywhere else it would havemade the page look messy. Ihave made the font look yellowhere as this stands out againstthe background and also makesthe text eye catching; I have alsomade the text the same size asthe contents text at the top of thepage so this shows that thisinformation is as important as thecontents section. 23. This image matches theconventions of music basedmagazines because it is a midbody shot, and the image is themain focus of the page, as well asbeing supported by a title; and allthese points are covered by mostrap magazines as you will findthat in most rap magazines youwill see an image of a artist on thefront cover. On the next slide youwill see the contents page thatmine took its inspiration from as Ifelt that the image and the layoutof this particular contents page isof good quality and I wanted toreplicate it in my own style in mymagazine, and as you will see mycontents page has taken note ofmost of the conventions of thisparticular magazine. 24. I have followed the conventions of rap based magazines here, as there is always a web address either on the contents page or the front cover, and I have included it on both pages, while being able to keep the information out of the way. 25. The main image on the page isa mid body shot of the modelwith his hand on his chin andin this particular image themodel is pondering at thecamera. This image issupported by the Guess whosback? title which is anothermain article within themagazine which I felt hadgreat importance but not asmuch as the main article, so itis displayed on the contentspage, which is usually thesecond page viewed by thereader. 26. Here is the page number sectionof the page, as you can see thecolours used on the page numberare completely different to thosecolours used in the magazine, and this has been done to make itmore clearer to the reader aboutwhat page number this particularpage is. Also this challenges toconventions of magazinesbecause in most magazines (aswell as other products such asbooks etc) the page number islocated at the bottom left or rightof the page, I decided to put ithere, as this is different and givesmy magazine its own futuristiclook and feel that is different toothers. 27. I think that my contents page is professional and is suitable forthe target audience; it includes all the main conventions youwould expect from a rap based magazine contents page aswell as the main conventions of magazine contents pages ingeneral. The image used is of good quality and is the type ofimage you would expect from a magazine such as mine.I feel that I have got all the right information on my contentspage, such as contents, connectivity features, website, secondary article and a image; as well as including my owndesign features. I have taken inspiration from a contents page that reallycaught my eye and I aimed to follow the conventions that thisparticular contents page set and reproduce them while addingmy own style to the finished product. I feel that my contents page is of high quality, and since thedraft stage of this project the target audience who have gotteninvolved have liked my ideas for the contents page. 28. This is the double page spread I have created for my product. As this article isbased on the hip-hop duo Rizzle kicks I have gone with the same theme whichwas present on the front cover, and I have once again used bright but not childlike colours as this is what this particular group is about. As you can see there areall the normal features you would come to expect from a double page spreadwithin a rap magazine which follow the conventions of magazines; and in othercases I have challenged these conventions and made my double page spreadlook different and exciting, which is what the target audience want. 29. This is the title section of the double page spread, as you can see theartists name is at the top of the page in the largest writing on the page, then underneath the image of Rizzle Kicks is the article title as well as anintroduction to what the article is about. I did this because when someonelooks at the page I want them to first look at the title which wouldannounce that it is Rizzle kicks, then go onto focus on the image beforereading the article title followed by the introduction section and then thearticle. 30. I have also done this because it moves away from the more traditionalconvention which would be the title at the top of the page, followed by aintroduction underneath the title, then the article over both pages. Alsowith the re arrangement of the title section of the double page spread itgives my double page spread that futuristic and innovative look that myfront cover/contents page deliver. I have also made sure that the main titleand the artist title are in yellow, meaning that they stand out to you morewhen you view the page. 31. Above the main bulk of text there is a quote which indicates one of the best bitsof the article, and gives the reader a good idea of what the article is about; I haveadded this in to the double page spread because it is a regular convention foundin a lot of magazines, not just rap based magazines and quotes are usually usedfor something memorable within a article and I felt that this part was emotionalaccomplishment and I felt that this quote should be stated. The quote is in yellowfont so it stands out against all the normal font, but I have kept the text size smallso that it doesnt take anything away from the title or the main image located onthe double page spread. 32. This is the main bulk of text, and as you can see I have kept it all on one page, and this was done so that the image of the artists would stand out and be givenmore attention and I also wanted to keep all the text on one page and not overtwo pages as this can sometimes end up being messy and will give the finalproduct a un professional look. I have also done this to support the title layout withthe artists name at the top and the article title near the bottom of the first page. The text has been split into two columns and is in a size which is easy to read. Alot of magazines follow the same idea that I have used where the main image willbe on one page and the main article would be on the other, as this means that youcan get all the text onto the article without taking anything from the image 33. Here is the main image which is used in this article, as you can see it dominatesmost of the first page, with the article title taking up the rest of the page. Theimage is a mid body shot of the duo Rizzle Kicks and it is a suitable image foe thisparticular article. A lot of magazines follow a convention where the main image ona article is dominating most of a page and text is present on the other, and this isthe convention that I mainly followed, but I added my own look and feel to thepage with the placement of the title under the image and if you look it gives aposter like impression as the image is dominating and then the text supporting theimage is below. The background is also suitable as this is the same theme thatwas used on the front cover and so I wanted to carry this on to maintain aprofessional look and feel to the magazine and this article. 34. I feel that my double page spread has been made to a professionalstandard and will appeal to the target audience; I implemented all themain conventions for rap based magazines into my double pagespread and I have also challenged some, as well as adding my ownstyle into the pages. I feel that the presentation of this particular page is great and I feelthat the organization is good as everything seems to have beenplaced in the right spot. The title placement is interesting as it is notsomething seen often in magazines and goes completely against thestandard conventions of double page spread, but it is factors such asthis which give my product that unique look and feel which otherproducts dont have. I feel the article has been presented well and the text is easy to readas it is not to small and it is against a slightly transparent panel tomake sure that the background dose not out shade the text making itimpossible to read. The image has been placed well, where it is in a position to be thecentre of attention of the page without being anything to extravagantand this image follows the main conventions such as mid body shot, dominate most of a particular page and be related to the article.
