Introduction

Lockerbie Academy prides itself on the number of excursions

on offer to all pupils at all stages.

The aim of this booklet is to allow you to see what is on offer

across the different year groups and across the different subject

areas, on a regular basis. Other trips will pop up on an ad-hoc

basis but contained within are those of a regular occurrence.

Included for each trip is a brief description, its educational aims

and curricular links, as well as costs involved. It is hoped that

you will find this useful in budgeting for your child should you

wish them to take advantage of any of these opportunities.

It is our firm belief that no child should be denied the chance of

a school excursion due to financial constraints and the school’s

new Finance Committee will endeavour to keep all trips open to

all pupils.

Each trip adheres to the regional policies relevant to Health and

Safety and trip leaders are experienced teachers, well versed

with procedures.

The benefits for children taking part in a school trip are obvious.

It allows them to develop into confident individuals, successful

learners, responsible citizens and effective contributors – the

key principles of Curriculum for Excellence. A trip can be a

memorable, life changing event for a young person developing

them personally, socially and emotionally.

I hope you find this booklet useful.

Lockerbie Academy Excursions

Battlefields Trip

Cost: £440 (approx)

Year Group: S3 and above

Aim: The Battlefields trip is

an annual trip that travels to

the WW1 Battlefield sites in

France and Belgium. We

study WW1 in S3 and S4 and

the trip usually has a real

impact on students who study

History in these years.

Recently, especially as we

come up to and enter into the

centenary years the trip has

been taking students outside of History. We target

students from S4 - S6. We always try to visit the graves of

student relatives and we get these added into the itinerary.

The aims of the trip are to reinforce learning in the classroom

and a more general aim of fostering an awareness of this

particular time in British history and the impact it had on the

people of Britain. We encourage a respect for the efforts of the

men and women who fought in the war, we recognise that these

were our soldiers from our communities. We allow students to

form their own views on the morality of going to war and on the

demands made of those who fought in the war by their country

and superiors.

sampling, a whole day on Drigg beach for belt transect

sampling session and a freshwater stream study. The students

have the opportunity to experience a high level of field study

which will assist them with their personal investigations for the

course as well as the first-hand experience of putting the theory

they have been learning into practice. They will have use

contemporary high quality equipment used in ecological

surveys. The centre is also equipped to teach about renewable

energy and the students can see the working and advantages

of a biomass boiler.

are managed in and around the town by carrying out various

fieldwork techniques such as environmental quality surveys,

traffic counts, footpath erosion surveys and an interview with

the Lake District National Park Authority. Pupils also go on a

short cruise on Lake Windermere. This data is collated and then

used to help complete the Higher assignment which is

externally assessed.

Comenius Cost: Year Group: Seniors Aim: Since 1995 Lockerbie Academy students have participated in an International Student Conference with pupils from: Mattlidens Gymnasium in Esbo, Finland; Kopernicus High School in Warsaw, Poland; St Olav Videregaende, Stavanger Norway and Istituto Magistrale Statale ‘E de Amicis’ Cuneo, Italy.

The Conference usually takes place each September with each school taking turns to host. In 2015 Lockerbie Academy hosted and this year, 2016 it is the turn of Mattlidens Gymnasium in Esbo, Finland. The cycle continues to Norway, Italy and then Poland before the rota begins again with Lockerbie.

All young people who participate in the hosting programme enjoy developing their knowledge and understanding by experiencing new cultures and by viewing issues from a European perspective. It is an excellent opportunity to enhance employability and life skills through travelling to a new destination, staying with a host family and sharing with other teenagers their aims and ambitions. Many friendships have been made and hopefully more will be formed in the future.

Junior RE London Trip

Cost: This trip is approximately £280-£300. This includes everything needed for the trip.

Year Group: S1/2

Aim: This trip has been running for over 6 years now and has proven to be extremely popular and successful.

Accommodation is in central London for handiness to our sites, and it is on a full board basis while we are there.

The trip is an experience of Multi-cultural Britain. The aim is to look at the different places of worship for 4 of the main world religious faiths; Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and Christianity.

We visit a Hindu Mandir and take part in their arti ceremony. This temple is an amazing highlight as the pupils will never have seen anywhere like this or taken part in a Hindu service before.

We visit a Sikh Gurdwara in Nottinghill, after our visit the Sikh community prepare a langar meal just for us.

We also have a guided tour around London Central Mosque, one of the Oldest Mosques in Britain, hearing and witnessing the call to prayer in Central London is quite an experience!

We also visit St Pauls Cathedral getting a guided tour continuing our theme of Worship. This visit takes in everything from the Queen’s seat to Wellington & Nelsons tomb to the Whispering gallery and the highlight the climbing of the dome, to get an amazing daytime panoramic view of London.

These are the Religious sites that we visit that cover RMPS BGE outcomes, and help promote citizenship and tolerance in Lockerbie Academy pupils having their eyes opened to the World at large.

Page 14: My S3 - Lockerbie Academy · economic times. Pupils learn about examples of ‘green technology’. Pupils also invent and make their own ice cream and packaging, learn about fair

- 13 -

We also visit Parliament, as a Humanities subject we study the different reasons & motivations people have in their lives especially as to how they decide right and wrong. Having looked at the religious motivations that some people have, we then look at how/why people turn to Politics for answers and this is the theme of our Parliament visit.

The trip also visits the Natural History Museum. This is where we look at where things come from. This is a question that we look at frequently in RMPS and we study religious truth versus scientific truth. This is part of RMPS in later years, so again this is relevant to our trip and the pupils’ education.

We also take in a London show which is linked to our courses. Over the years we have seen War Horse as we study the morality behind War in RMPS. We have also been to The Lion King as in S2 we study the Environment and this year the extremely successful Wicked, as part of our courses are looking at where does evil come from, and how does society tackle this, the show also has themes of prejudice that we look at in S2.

The 2 obviously tourist parts of the trip are our night flight on the London Eye, and our walking tour of Central London to take in the sights and sounds of this busy Capital City.

last year’s trip the ML Faculty

would like to run a second trip

to Paris. We intend to take a

group of up to 40 S2 into S3

Year Group: S1-S2

Aim: The school offers all S1 and S2 pupils the opportunity to

go to Italy on a biennial ski trip during February or March.

This is an excellent social and cultural experience allowing for

pupils to be more responsible as well as learning about a

different country. The main purpose of the trip is to give pupils

the chance to either learn to ski or to improve their skiing during

6 days of ski lessons with a fully qualified instructor.

We travel to the

Aosta Valley in

Northern Italy and

the ski resort of

Pila. Travel is by

bus, 23 hours there

hire and ski lessons. Due to the nature of the trip, clothing is

very specific. Each pupil requires a ski helmet, ski jacket and

trousers. You have the option to hire these at an additional cost

of approx. £45.

All pupils gain a lot from this experience with most returning

home wanting to ski again. The memories of the trip will be

In past years we have seen excellent performances of ‘A Christmas Carol’, ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’, ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘James and the Giant Peach’ to name but a few. more about their own strength’s and abilities. The experience is

of great benefit to all the pupils and will help them to bond

together as a group, as well as develop their self-confidence,

increase awareness of others and develop communication skills

while developing respect & responsibility for themselves, others

and the natural environment. It will also give them an

opportunity to build positive relationships with the staff who will

guide and support them throughout their journey at Lockerbie
