My Shadow by Robert Louis Stevenson
I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can
see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to my head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my
bed.
The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to
grow—
Not at all like proper children, which is always very
slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller like an India-
rubber ball,
And he sometimes gets so little that there’s none of
him at all.
He hasn’t got a notion of how children ought to play,
And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way.
He stays so close beside me, he’s a coward you can see;
I’d think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow
sticks to me!
One morning, very early, before the sun was up,
I rose and found the shining dew on every butter cup;
But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepyhead,
Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in
bed.

The Moon by Robert Louis Stevenson
The moon has a face like the clock in the hall;
She shines on thieves on the garden wall,
On streets and field and harbor quays,
And birdies asleep in forks of the trees.
The squalling cat and the squeaking mouse,
The howling dog by the door of the house,
The bat that lies in bed at noon,
All love to be out by the light of the moon.
But all of the things that belong to the day
Cuddle to sleep to be out of her way;
And flowers and children close their eyes
Till up in the morning the sun shall arise.

Whole Duty of Children by Robert Louis Stevenson
A child should always say what’s true
And speak when he is spoken to,
And behave mannerly at table:
At least as far as he is able.

Apples by Helen H. Moore
Apples, apples, what a treat,
Sweet and tart and good to eat.
Apples green and apples red,
Hang from branches overhead,
And when they ripen, down they drop.
So we can taste our apple crop.

The Secret Author Unknown
We have a secret, just we three,
The robin, and I, and the sweet cherry-tree.
The bird told the tree, and the tree told me,
And nobody knows it but just us three.
But of course the robin knows it best,
Because she built the—I shan’t tell the rest;
And laid the four little—something in it—
I’m afraid I shall tell it every minute.
But if the tree and the robin don’t peep,
I’ll try my best the secret to keep.
Though I know when the little birds fly about
Then the whole secret will be out.

The Little Turtle by Vachel Lindsay
There was a little turle.
He lived in a box.
He swam in a puddle.
He climbed on the rocks.
He snapped at a mosquito.
He snapped at a flea.
He snapped at a minnow.
And he snapped at me.
He caught the mosquito.
He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow.
But he didn’t catch me.

All sandwiched in between.

At the Seaside by Robert Louis Stevenson
When I was down beside the sea
A wooden spade they gave to me
To dig the sandy shore.
My holes were empty like a cup.
In every hole the sea came up,
Till it could come no more.

Rain by Robert Louis Stevenson
The rain is raining all around,
It falls on field and tree,
It rains on the umbrellas here,
And on the ships at sea.

The Ant by Mary Ann Hoberman
The busy ant works hard all day
And never stops to rest or play.
He carries things ten times his size,
And never grumbles, whines or cries.
And even climbing flower stalks,
He always runs, he never walks.
He loves his work, he never tires,
And never puffs, pants or perspires.
You though I praise is boundless vim
I am not really fond of him.

The Answers by Robert Clairmont
"When did the world begin and how?"
I asked a lamb, a goat, a cow:
"What’s it all about and why?"
I asked a hog as he went by:
"Where will the whole thing end, and when?"
I asked a duck, a goose and a hen:
And I copied all the answers too,
A quack, a honk, an oink, a moo.

The Purple Cow by Gelett Burgess
I never saw a purple cow,
I never hope to see one,
But I can tell you anyhow,
I’d rather see than be one!

At the Zoo by A. A. Milne
There are lions and roaring tigers, and enormous cam-
els and things,
There are buffalo-buffalo-bisons, and a great big bear
with wings,
There’s a sort of tiny potamus, and a tiny nosserus
too—
But I gave buns to the elephant when I went down to
the Zoo!
There are badgers and bidgers and bodgers, and a Su-
perintendent’s House,
There are masses of goats, and a Polar, and different
kinds of mouse,
And I think there’s a sort of something which is call a
wallaboo-0
But I gave buns to the elephant when I went down to
the Zoo!
If you try to talk to the bison, he never quite under-
stands;
You can’t shake hands with a mingo—he doesn’t like
shaking hands.
And lions and roaring tigers hate saying, How do you
do?”—
But I give buns to the elephant when I go down to the
Zoo!

Penguins Author Unknown
Their suits are black and their vests are white.
They waddle to the left and they waddle to the right.
They stand on the ice and they look very neat,
As they waddle along on their little flat feet.

Kangaroos by Kenn Nesbitt
If a person has four babies
you would call them all quadruplets.
If a kangaroo does likewise
should you call them kangaruplets?
And there's something else I wonder,
that could use illuminating,
When a kangaroo is thinking
is it kangaruminating?
If you baked a kangaroo a pie
and shaped it like a boomerang
would it be best with whipping cream
or maybe kangaroo meringue?
I've got so many questions,
I just don't know what to do.
I guess perhaps I'll have to go
and ask a kangaroo.

Morning Prayer by Ogden Nash
Now another day is breaking,
Sleep was sweet and so is waking.
Dear Lord, I promised you last night
Never again to sulk or fight.
Such vows are easier to keep
When a child is sound asleep.
Today, O Lord, for your dear sake,
I'll try to keep them when awake.

Obedience Author Unknown
If you're told to do a thing,
And mean to do it really,
Never let it be by halves,
But do it fully freely.
Do not make a poor excuse,
Waiting, weak, unsteady;
All obedience worth the name
Must be prompt and ready.

Flint by Christina Rossetti
An emerald is as green as grass,
A ruby red as blood;
A sapphire shines as blue as heaven;
A flint lies in the mud.
A diamond is a brilliant stone,
To catch the world’s desire;
An opel holds a fiery spark;
But a flint holds fire.

Caterpillar by Christina Rossetti
Brown and furry
Caterpillar in a hurry, Take your walk
To the shady leaf, or stalk,
Or what not,
Which may be the chosen spot.

Spin and die,
To live again a butterfly.

The first one said, “Let’s swim some more.”
The second one said, “Let’s rest awhile.”
The third one said, “Swimming makes me smile.”
The fourth one said, “My legs are growing long.”
The fifth one said, “I’m getting very strong.”
Five little tadpoles will soon be frogs.
They’ll jump from the water and sit on logs.

All Things Bright and Beautiful By Cecil Francis Alexander
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings.
The purple-headed mountain,
The river running by,
The sunset in the morning,
That brightens up the sky;
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
He made them every one:
The tall trees in the greenwood,
The meadows where we play,
The rushes by the water,
We gather every day;
He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell,
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.

By the fountain’s brink.

In its barley bed.

Where the clouds float through.
What is white? A swan is white
Sailing in the light.
What is yellow? Pears are yellow,
Rich and ripe and mellow.
What is green? The grass is green,
With small flowers between.
What is violet? Clouds are violet
In the summer twilight.
What is orange? Why, an orange,
Just an orange!
