My Special Taonga

My special taonga is a koru because it was

my Great Grandma’s and my uncle carved

it for her birthday when he was 10. Now

he’s passed away.

My Great Grandma gave it to my Grandma

and then my Dad and then me.

It is very special because I didn’t get to

see my Great Grandma before she died.

My Special Taonga

My special taonga is my Grandad’s watch.

My Grandad has passed away.

It is silver and it is cold like ice when you

touch it. It is made out of metal. The

watch is a circle.

I have it because it reminds me of him

when I wear it. I keep it in my drawer. I

got my treasure at my Grandad’s funeral.

My Special Treasure

A treasure is something that someone

gives you and it’s special to your family.

The thing that’s special to me is my Nan’s

blanket, from my Nan’s Mum. My Nan’s

Mum made it when my Nan was a kid. It’s

been in my family for lots of years. When

my Nan had kids she gave a blanket to

them.

When my Grandad puts the blanket on me

it reminds me of my Great Nan. The blan-

ket is big as my bed and it has colours all

over it.

My Special Taonga

My taonga is my treasure. It is a koru. It

is made out of shells. My Dad carved it.

It is special to me because it is a special

shell and I like it. It stays on my desk in

a drawer. It makes me feel like my Dad is

next to me.

Porirua East School Pride Excellence Success

Learning and achieving though respecting and valuing who we are now, where we have come from and who we can become

Tena Koutou Parents, Caregivers and Friends of Porirua East School Attendance Our school target is 95%+ as is our individual student target. This allows for 10 days absent over the year. Our Ministry advises us that this is a reasonable number of days to have away within a year. Kathy and I are concerned about the number of times we are not notified of a child’s absence. When this happens we have to record a ‘?’ in our system.

Please notify us by 10am if your child is going to be away from school. The school cell phone number is 0211406576.

Our 2016 school target 95%+ Poetry Competition We had a wonderful performance on Friday afternoon, with many parents attending to support the children. It was great to see, and hear, the progression of complexity from our New Entrants to our Year 6 students. The winners will receive their awards at karakia tomorrow. The winners are: Room 12 Pandora Room 11 Kaylani Room 10 Avril Room 9 Raiden Year 3 Charlotte Year 4 Devon Year 5 Millar Year 6 Michaela Astro Turf Our Astro-Turf is now fully installed and the children are able to play on it. We have net-ball poles and hoops now. In the summer we will install tennis nets. Room 12 won the ‘draw’ to be the first class to play on it. You will notice we have had some seating built at the front of the hall. This has always been a ‘messy’ part of the school. Stuart, our caretaker, says not even weeds will grow in that garden. I think the wooden seating is a great improvement. Reporting to Parents The teachers enjoyed their meetings with you last week. Many thanks to those parents who attended. I hope you found the meetings helpful. We do value these opportunities to talk to parents about the children’s school learning and achievements. Poroporoaki for Ms Macfarlane On Friday at 1pm we will be having a poroporoaki to farewell Ms MacFarlane. Ms MacFarlane has been teaching at Porirua East School for 5 years. Many of our senior children would have had her for a teacher when they were in the junior school. Parents and whanau are very welcome to join us as we wish her all the best for her new position. Because of the poroporoaki on Friday lunchtime will be 12.30-1pm.

MAORI LANGUAGE WEEK We have our special Maori Language Week Assembly on Wednesday. All the classes have been practising their Te Reo and their item. Whanau are invited to join us on Wednesday at 2.15pm to celebrate Te Reo Maori and our school’s commitment to ensur-ing Porirua East School children value and respect our bi-cultural heritage. Students’ Writing Room 2 I hope you enjoy reading Jayden’s, Savannah’s, Dakota’s and Phoenix’s writing about their personal taonga.
