THINGS I KNOW ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA North Carolina borders the Atlantic Ocean. The States first Art Museum was in the city of Raleigh. The Lost Colony was also in North Carolina. The Wright Brothers made first flight. The first Pepsi served and created was in North Carolina.

Wingspread: 17–19 in.Tail: 5 1/2–7 in.

Food Seeds of grass, waste grain buckwheat, peanuts,

cowpeas, seeds of pine, dove weed, pokeberry, some insects and snails. 98 percent of diet is seeds.

Mourning doves nest from southeast Alaska and southern Canada south to Baja, California through Mexico to Panama. They also range from California to the East Coast. Adult mourning doves live about two years in the wild. Some cases, however, have noted a life span of five, seven, and 10 years.

Food Small seeds, fruit, tender leaves and

insects. Breeding 1-3 clutches per year with 12-14 eggs per

clutch. Predators destroy about ½ of the nests.

Food Fish Breeding Monogamous. Breeding season early March to May.

Young Called chick or eyas. Remain in nest until 8 weeks of

age when they fledge

SNOWY EGRET Length: 22 to 26 in.

Wingspan: 38 to 45 in. Food Small fish, crustaceans, aquatic insects and amphibians.   Breeding In North Carolina breeding activity begins in the early

spring. Upon arrival at the breeding grounds, the birds defend a small breeding territory against other individuals and soon begin nest construction. Three to five blue-green eggs are laid in a crude stick nest, often only a few feet away from another nest. Approximately 3 weeks of incubation is required for hatching.

AMERICAN SHAD Length: 14 to 16 in.

Weight: 2.2 to 6.6 lbs. Food Juveniles eat worms, crustaceans and insects. Adults eat

large zooplankton, fish eggs and small fish.

Breeding Spawning occurs in mid-river at night and can occur as

early as November or as late as July. Juvenile shad remain in the river during summer and return downriver in the fall.

Young Hatch in about 8 to 12 days at water temperature of 11

degrees to 15 degrees.
