EHS Attendance Procedures
EHS takes attendance seriously due to the fact that decades of research from across the country demonstrate that daily school attendance correlates positively to student academic and social learning, academic achievement, and high school graduation – which all ultimately maximize post-secondary options beyond high school.
To clear an absence, please call the 24-Hour Attendance
Office Line. Leave a message that includes your student’s name, I.D. number, grade, date of absence, and reason for absence. Please speak clearly and leave a contact phone number so that the attendance clerk may contact you during the day.
If you are calling during normal business hours and reach voicemail, it is because we are on another line or helping a
parent / student at the window. PLEASE LEAVE A
MESSAGE. We check and retrieve our voicemail every few minutes throughout the day.
Parent requests for early release or late arrival due to medical appointments and family emergencies will be permitted.
The student must obtain an OFF CAMPUS PASS (OCP) from the Attendance Office prior to leaving campus. A student can pick up their OCP at the Attendance Office during their Nutrition Break or Lunch, so please call in at least one hour prior to those times.
State law requires pupils to attend their assigned classes every day school is in session. Any student missing more than 30 days for any one class in a semester will not receive credit for that class. All absences not cleared by a parent / guardian phone call to the attendance office within 72 hours, will be considered truant. The absence must be cleared for the truancy to be removed.
Excused Absence / Tardy (make up work allowed): Personal Illness or Quarantine / Illness or death in the immediate family / Medical and dental appointments

Best Practices for 9th & 10th Grades:
The key to teenagers’ success in high school is parent involvement. Opening the lines of communication between home and EHS shows your teenager that you care and are involved in their education.
Setting up and attending a parent-teacher
conference, or simply regularly communicating with your teenager’s teachers, is essential to building a relationship with the adults to whom you entrust the academic development of your
teenager. Communicating with your teenager’s teachers sends a message to your teenager that his education is important. Building a partnership with teachers is a great way for both of you to support your teenager and each other.
When setting up a parent-teacher conference, be on
time. Your time with a teacher is limited and you should try to make the most of it.
Be prepared for your meeting. Part of being prepared is knowing your child’s grades in advance of your meeting. Some teachers will have a website where you can check grades, assignments and tests. Ask your child beforehand how he thinks he’s doing in class and if he has any concerns.
Bring questions. It helps to write your thoughts down so you make sure you get to everything you’d like to cover. Because time is so limited, before you go into the meeting, prioritize what is on top of your list to address with the teacher. Also, you should take notes during the meeting.
Let the teacher know you value her time and treat her with respect. Listen first, then talk. Thank the teacher for bringing up a problem and discuss ways in which you can solve it together. A good parent-teacher relationship can help everyone better support your teenager’s learning.
Arrange a way to communicate going forward. Ask whether the teacher’s preferred method of communication is phone calls, emails or continued meetings. You should let it be known that you plan to be an active participant in your teenager’s academic achievement and you are available for further discussions.
Your partnership with teachers is most beneficial if it continues throughout the year, so you should maintain a relationship beyond the initial conference. This will help identify potential issues in your teenager’s learning or behavior and will make both you and the teacher feel comfortable bringing up ways to support your teenager’s education all year.
Parent-Teacher Conference Guide High school is the time when parents often feel
their presence at school isn’t needed or valued,
but high school is when grades start to count for
college, career, and beyond. It’s important for you
to continue to stay involved. As the school work gets
more challenging, parent-teacher conferences can be
intimidating and overwhelming for parents. Try to
remember that building a relationship with school
creates the opportunity for both you and the teacher
to partner to understand and support your teenager
and his academic and social development. You
should also encourage your teenager to join and
participate in the discussion.
Know what your most important question is
going into the conference. This has never been more crucial than in high school. The teachers may have as many as 36 or 50 other students in the class and time is even more limited at these conferences than in the past. You want to make sure you get the main question answered.
How is he doing? Is there anything I can do? Or anything I need to know?
Listen as much as you can. Take notes. These conferences are likely to be short and to the point and you want to try to absorb as much as possible.
Ask the teacher how much time your teenager should be spending on his class per night. In high school, parents are often less aware than in middle or elementary school of what is needed for homework.
Ask how long it should be taking your child to complete homework at night, and compare that with how long it is actually taking him. If the time is significantly longer, it may signal a problem with the class or understanding. If the time is shorter, and your child’s grades are good, it may be a sign that your child is ready for more advanced work.
Ask about work completion. Be sure to ask the teacher if your student is turning work in on time and completing the assignments. This is especially important in the first two years of high school. Developing time-management skills is crucial in high school and beyond.
It is important to ask the teacher if your teenager appears to have enough time to devote to school time. Is he racing to complete assignments the morning after a big game or school play?
Partnering with your counselor
Counselors are trained to take a complete look at your child, from academic achievement to college and career planning to emotional and social development.
EHS counselors 100% believe that no one knows your teenager better than you do. Parents’ insights for the counselor and teachers are just as important as what the counselor and teacher can offer you.
You should contact and stay in touch with your teenager’s school counselor, in addition to your
student’s teachers, as EHS counselors are assigned to students for all four years of high school.
Counselors monitor overall academic progress and make sure your teenager is taking the right types of classes to graduate on time and be prepared for career and college.
Your student’s counselor will know graduation requirements for your child. You should be aware of classes your child should take. Starting this conversation with your counselor early on will lay the foundation for planning for your child’s academic future over the course of high school.
If your teenager is struggling in school, the first person you may hear from is the teacher and then the counselor, once the teacher has passed their concern on.
If there’s anything emotionally concerning that may be interfering with your student’s ability to focus on schoolwork counselors can offer referrals to mental health professionals.
All EHS 9th graders completed a Career Interest Survey on the website: CaliforniaColleges.edu – please have them log-in to their personal account to show you their results!
Additionally, all EHS 9th graders completed a work in progress four year plan, on the same website, for them to use as a tool to think about how passing classes/not passing classes will affect how they meet the EUHSD graduation requirements and UC/CSU A-G requirements.

Founded in 1894, Escondido High School is rich in
history, traditions, and spirit. We invite you to
explore our history and learn more by going to our
school’s website!
Here are some interesting
historical facts about our school:
EHS Campus: 1894 – 1929 – the beginning The above building that would eventually become the first Escondido High School was built in 1882 by the University of Southern California. Located at what is now the intersection of Ivy Street and Second Avenue in Downtown Escondido, the University used the building as a Methodist seminary for ten years. However, the operation ultimately proved to be too costly, and the seminary was forced to close its doors. In 1894, USC was forced to will the building to a man named Henry Putnam. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Putnam
donated the building to the newly-formed Escondido Union High School District. With that donation, Escondido High School (EHS) was born. When classes first began at EHS, total enrollment at the school was less than 100 students.
Classes continued at the original EHS campus until the evening of May 23, 1929. It was on this day that the historic campus was engulfed in flames. By the time the fire was extinguished, the beautiful red brick building was nothing but a memory.
Fun Facts
The original EHS nickname was the “Grapepickers” — a reference to Escondido’s status at the time as a major producer of grapes and wine.
Originally, the EHS campus didn’t have a bell. Instead, a Gong was used to signal the end of classes. The EHS yearbook has always been named, ”The Gong”, in honor of this piece of EHS History.
In the 1920’s, EUHSD began to offer a post-graduate program to those EHS graduates who couldn’t afford to move away and attend a major university. This program marked the beginnings of what is now EUHSD’s Adult Education program.

escuela secundaria.
Estudiantes deben de desarrollar las
habilidades para la administración del
tiempo que serán cruciales en la escuela
secundaria y en sus estudios superiores.
GUÍA para el 9no grado – continuacion:
Pregunte sobre las tareas y las
actividades extracurriculares. En la
escuela secundaria, a menudo, los
alumnos tienen más actividades
extracurriculares, y es importante
preguntarle al maestro si su hijo parece
tener suficiente tiempo para dedicarle a
la escuela. ¿La calidad de sus tareas se ve
afectada cuando dedica tiempo adicional a
realizar servicio comunitario/ deportes/
musica/etc.? Si bien las actividades
extracurriculares son importantes para la
formación de un adulto joven completo, estas
no deben realizarse a expensas de sus
calificaciones.
