    V I N C E N T D ’ S O U Z A

There is a little project that we at Mylapore Times rolled out every December. The Santa Claus Tour.

We would ask parents who wanted to surprise their kids with gifts presented by Santa to drop off the goodies at our office on the quiet and our team would go on the Santa rounds of the neighbourhood.

We often turned to the boarders at St. Bede’s to spare us three or four musicians who would accompany Santa, hire a bright red car from the alleys of Kodambakkam’s cine world and get one of our friends to get into the Santa costume.

The tour would start at 6 p.m. and close by 10 p.m. The requests were so many that the Santa bandwagon had to work smart to complete its schedule. It was not an easy task - mores when so many of us now reside in tall apartment blocks and taking the lift now and then tired Santa; so we chose to alert the family and get them to come down to the parking lot or be near the gate.

I must say that Santa’s actions triggered many an emotion-al moment. I still remember two mothers who broke into tears as their kids went ga-ga after posing with Santa and getting their gifts. The keepsake photos they took must be amusing the kids who must be teens by now!

In this modern, digitally managed life, many of us may want to snigger at the Santa Claus idea. Perhaps the age of innocence and fairy tales is long gone.

It is not about Santa Claus this. It is about the warmth of giving, of sharing and of becoming simple and innocent.

Look at what happens in our apartment blocks at festival time. It is now not common to see one family greet another and offer a plate of sweets or a box of cakes and pudding. At best, you may wish the family when you see your neighbour in the corridor, bump into him or her in the lift or pass by during your morning walk in the campus park.

I wonder if you would want to play Santa for your kids this season. Start with writing a letter, a hand-written letter and post it, addressed to each kid. And see how this works on the young ones.

Placing a gift on the bedside table on 24th night will be wow too.

You don’t have to shop for a fancy gift. Choose something meaningful, something unique, something local.

And if you have the time now, you may want to sit with the kids and make your own Christmas star and hang it out.

May the spirit of the season be with us all.

The season for kolams: Mylapore streets sport them every morning

If you want to take in the visual de-light of kolams, then this is the best time of the year to do it. Stroll down any inner street of Mylapore and you are bound to enjoy the best kolams.

On the first morning of the margazhi season, the inner streets of Mylapore

sported small, large and some coloured kolams – in Nadu Street, Nattu Sub-baraya Street, Arisikaran Street, Arundale Road . . .

It must be said though that there were seemingly less kolams than one expected. But it was too early on a misty

Wednesday morn-ing to ask why this was so. Mylapore Times intends to post on its Mylapore TV channel on YouTube slideshows of these kolams from time to time in December and in January.

If you or your family designs kolams shoot a photo and share it with the newspaper –[email protected]. We will include them in the slideshows.

San Thomite sells eco-friendly decorations for X’mas: Anitha involves women in local kuppams in this handworkBy Dheepthi O. J.

Anitha Philip Sarathy, a resident of Leith Castle Street in San Thome has been in the decorations business since 1993.

She started it as a retail business. And then went on to offer festival decorations for banks, five star hotels and clubs under the brand name ‘Daffodils’

However, a few years ago, she had to take a break from her business to look after her family.

In May, she restarted the business. And as she knew that five-star hotels may not want to have big decorations in a pandemic year she developed a new business model.

Her idea now was to offer eco-friendly festival decorations to residents, at afford-able prices.

Soon she named her venture ‘Deck Your Halls’, after a famous Christmas carol and began production work.

Around the same time, women who Anitha knew from Srinivasapuram and Dooming Kuppam, were suffering as their husbands who used to work as drivers and painters lost their jobs, after lockdown. And hence, Anitha wanted to help them in some way.

That is when she came up with a novel idea of employing these women to make the decorations. She then roped-in five of them and the team started making decorations for

Christmas. Initially, as the lockdown was intense, Anitha would have these women collect raw materials from her. And then go to their houses and make wreaths, fancy bells, wall hangings and Christmas stock ings, at their own pace.

But later, when the lockdown norms were relaxed the women started making decorations at Anitha’s production unit

in Mandavelipakkam, following the pandemic time regula-tions.

The deco-rations, she says would be made out of locally sourced materials like paper, and ribbons.

Says Anitha, “As most of the

women know to stitch, it was easy for me to train them.”

She adds that her husband too sup-ports her in the business. “While I source raw materials and handle production, my husband Philip also provides design ideas and supports in marketing.” Anitha is now offering these decorations for Christmas. A Christmas stocking is priced at Rs. 150

Their products are available for sale at the Mount Road, Porur, Anna Nagar, Kolathur and Madipakkam branches of McRenett Bakery.

They are also available at Rahaman Decoration Center at Parrys Corner. One can also place order of their decorations via Amazon. For more details contact Anitha at 9150855667/ 98410 07676.

COMMUNITY GARDENINGThe residents of an apartments complex in Mandaveli have got their children involved. And watering and trimming plants has kept them engaged this pandemic season.

    By Dheepthi O. J.

Can community gardening take place in your campus of apartment blocks?

Here is an example of a community in Mandaveli that is encouraging its children to get involved in watering plants and caring for them.

And the parents of these kids are employing dif-ferent ways to generate the interest.

After learning that a tomato plant at his terrace garden was not bearing fruit, 8-year-old Arjun, a resident of Dwaraka Apartments, at Raja Street,

Mandaveli was coaxed by his elders to sing a classi-cal song that he had learnt at his Carnatic music classes. He did and to his surprise within two days, the plant bore some 20 tomatoes.

Now, the music may not be able to create magic but it was one way to get a child to get involved.

Arjun’s mother Ganga Sridhar though was excited that the plant bore abundant fruit.

    Children of this

apartment complex, she says, have always been fascinated by the garden.

The lockdown has just facilitated them to spend more time with the plants, Ganga says and adds, “Almost all kids of our apartment, right from the youngest 3-year-old spend at least few minutes at the garden, every day. They also help us in watering the plants.”

Ganga, along with some of her neighbours start-ed a terrace garden at her complex four years ago.

Three months ago, she developed her garden by setting up a trellis for her creepers.

She also began growing a variety of plants, with support from R. A. Puram resident Sumitra Srikanth’s Aapti Gardening Solutions.

Her terrace garden now has a wide range of vegetables (tomato, brinjal, lady’s finger, Malabar cucumber), fruit (papaya, musk melon) and flower-ing plants. The residents also grow herbal plants like mint basils and koththamalli.

“All vegetables, especially the mint basils and mallis come handy for use in the kitchen.”

The green thumbs have also been composting veggie and fruit waste and are using it as manure for their terrace garden plants.
