To let rainwater collect-ed from storm water drain (SWD) to flow into temple tank or other water storage areas, Chennai Corporation is planning to develop an efficient SWD system.

On a trial basis, a part of this SWD network has been built on Mosque Street near Chitrakulam zone.

The civic body has used German technology for this project.

Chennai Corporation develops trial model for drains to let rain water flow into Chitrakulam

grass bed, and two layers of pebbles (big and small), to filter the flowing water.

Says Vivekanandan, AE of ward 124, “Beneath the pebbles, a pipe has been laid connecting this SWD facility at Mosque Street to the Chitrakulam tank. Many local streets including Kesavaperumal West Street, Mandaveli Lane, Nallappan Street, Chitrakulam West Street and Kesava Perumal South Street are connected to the network.”

So whenever it rains, he says, the ex-cess run-off water from these streets will be led to Chitrakulam tank. Based on the success of this model, Chennai Corporation is set to replicate the same in other parts of the city.

Corona virus: local churches issue guidelinesBy Our Staff Reporter

Churches under the Madras-Mylapore Catholic diocese have been given some guidelines to follow in the wake of the spread of the corona virus.

This follows similar guidelines issued elsewhere in India’s churches like in Mumbai.

At Sunday Mass, at San Thome Cathedral the priest asked people not to hold each others’ hands when the prayer and sign of peace was said but to merely acknowledge it with folded hands.

Elsewhere, priests are requesting the faithful to receive Holy Communion on their tongues and not accept it in their hands and then consume it and for holy water fonts in churches to be kept dry instead of filling it daily because its use by church-goers can lead to infection if used by virus-affected people.

Corona virus: surgical masks are in demandBy Our Staff Reporter

Following the outbreak of Corona virus in India, local medical shop owners in Mylapore say surgical face masks are in demand.

Said Jayanthi, a medical shop owner at Mandaveli, “People started buying the two-ply face masks (green coloured surgi-cal masks) soon after the virus began spreading in China. The demand increased after it broke out in India.”

She said demand is mostly from people visiting foreign countries.

“We are out of stock now. Even the supply is scarce,” she said. Three medical shop owners in South Mada Street, Mylapore said the surgical masks were out of stock at their shops last week. They confirmed that the demand has been high.

The Apollo Pharmacy here sells the N-95 masks, used for protection against the virus.

A staff here said that all N95 masks they had stocked had sold out.

India reported its first Corona virus case at Kerala in February, this year. Currently, it has been reported at many places, including Kerala, Delhi, Agra, Telangana and Jaipur.

The Muslim community, mostly women have been stag-ing a sit-in protest near Jumma Masjid on Kutchery Road, protesting against the CAA and NRC. It began last Friday.

Calling it ‘Chennai Mylai Shaheen Bagh’, the protest-ers shout slogans, hold up placards and listen to leaders address them. Said a woman who was protesting here, “This is an indefinite protest. We will stop only when the Tamil Nadu Government passes a resolution against the CAA, NRC and NPR and takes a stand for us.”

Mylapore police have been deployed at the protest site.

Uma Narayanan was overjoyed at receiving some guests at the silver jubilee of a play school she runs in CIT Colony, which was celebrated on February 29.

There were men and women in that gathering who had studied here when they were toddlers, moved up in life, married, had children and admitted their children in the very play school they had been to.

These memories are what made the jubilee of The Nest Playschool so special and warm. And made this a special day for Uma, the founder.

Uma’s family came to live in this colony in the late 1960s.

She loves children, she loved teaching and so Uma went on to teach at Bambino, one of the best such schools in this part of the city. “I found my calling there,” she recalls.

Uma worked at Bambino for some 17 years and then charted her own destiny. Nest Playschool was born in the outer yard of the CIT Colony residence in 1995.

There were seven admis-sions and these grew to 50. Uma stuck to what she had experienced as a teacher -

A PLAYSCHOOL CELEBRATES ITS SILVER JUBILEE

The Nest has been Uma Narayanan’s dream

expose the tod-dlers to the play and learn method.

“We don’t ask our children to start reading and writing from day one,” she says. And so, some mod-day young parents who are keen to get

their wards on the education highway do raise their eye-brows at Uma’s philosophy. “But when we explain the goals, these parents under-stand and appreciate,” she says.

She also encourages the children to play with clay models, beads and stuff. “That is for better eye-hand co-ordination,” she says. “All this prepares them for Kindergarten and junior school.” Uma hopes admis-

sions could get better. But she is aware that Nest competes with many oth-ers around her. With her are three staffers and three assistants.

At the jubi-lee event, there were three special guests - Shoba Raman, principal,

Vidya Mandir, educa-tionist Meena Muthiah and Devila J. Patel, founder of Bambino School.

Uma also released a CD of songs in English and Thamizh for tod-dlers; written by her and arranged by M. S. Martin.

The Nest is at No.3, 2nd Main Road, CIT Colony, Mylapore. Phone: 24660466.

“I would have been dead 8 years ago but my doctor saved me.”

Ezhumalai was taking me home one recent even-ing. I waved him down in Alwarpet, he was on his way home in Mylapore. But he was willing to take me.

“I got jaundice. I was really sick. I used to drink, drink hard. After that I stopped.”

Ezhumalai was born in one of Mylapore’s very congested colonies of some 7 blocks of tiny apart-ments built by the Slum Clearance Board some 30-odd years ago.

“Appa told me I was just 15 days old when a fire ravaged our colony of thatched huts. All was gone but families hung around till the blocks were built.”

The area is called Lala Thottam, located opposite the once-famous Kamadhenu Theatre and spread over lands that abut today’s Thiru Maiyilai MRTS rail station.

Some 1000 families reside in these blocks, an area where once petty criminals grew up to become goons who knifed people and robbed passersby.

“Those dark days are long past,” Ezhumalai tells me. “Almost half the original residents sold off and moved to the suburbs.”

But one huge problem stalks this community.Alcoholism.Not long ago, the men here could access four

TASMAC state-run liquor shops that dot the border of the colony. Lawlessness and steady deaths due to alcoholism brought the womenfolk to the streets - to protest.

The local MLA, R. Nataraj, a former Dir-General of Police and AIADMK member has been sympathetic to their cries. His sustained petitions and protests by some local political units led to the closure of two liquor shops.

“They must shut down the other two too,” Ezhumalai tells me.

“In my lifetime I must have seen at least one hundred men die of jaundice. They drink and drink, fall ill, rest and go back to drinking again. There are so many widows in our colony.”

The state’s revenues from sale of liquor is over Rs.25,000 crores. Much of this is made from sale at TASMAC shops.

You need to stand outside the counter of one to observe the brands and types of liquor that is bought. And if you examine each sample closely you aren’t sure that all this is indeed the kind of liquor that must be offered on sale. It amazes me that hardly any scientific lab study has been done on the ‘cheap’ liquors on sale and these results put out in the public domain. Why isn’t even a private body which is in the citizens activism space undertaking this?

Ask somebody who works closely in slums and colonies of the poor on the histories of widows. Widows who are 35 and 40. Many of them will tell you they lost their men to alcohol. Cold truths that come up when these women apply for state-given monetary handout.

With the summer season just starting, there are so many concerns and challenges we face and are going to tackle on a daily basis. Be it water avail-ability, or the scorching heat waves.

But one thing that makes my mouth go watery always is the vadu maangai that is usu-ally savoured with curd rice or even sometimes with sambhar rice. The hawkers in the mada streets in Mylapore have already began selling these in a variety of sizes. It sure is a treat to the eyes, nose and mouth. Wishing you all a happy maavadu season.

Automobiles dumped in C. I. T. Colony

A damaged van is seen lying in 2nd Link Street, C.I.T. Colony, Mylapore, since the last 6 months. Someone we do not know parked this van and vanished. Used liquor bottles and garbage is seen lying under this van.

Also, an old ambulance is seen abandoned at the entrance of 2nd Link Street for quite some time. Some people are seen consuming liquor behind the van.

We request civic officials of our area to arrange to remove these automobiles.

Dress code in templesI just got back from a tour of Trincomalee in Sri

Lanka. There, to enter the lord Shiva temple inside the fort, men must wear a veshti and women of certain age are not allowed to enter.

Veshti is provided for visitors who come without it. All people follow the dress code without any murmur.

Hope visitors to temples in Tamil Nadu follow dress code without questioning it.

ful service but we hope young people do not sit here, download movies and watch them in groups for hours on end.

Film shoots at playgrounds

Refer the report on film shoot-ing at midnight at a Corporation ground on St. Mary’s Road. I think the civic body charges crews for renting a playground for shooting. One must check if permission was given. Also, was the power supply got from their own generator set and not from the junction box of TANGEDCO.

First Aid team on Marina did not respond

The nurses/ attendants at the First Aid kiosk located off the Marina service road refused to step outside and help a man who had had an epileptic attack last Sunday morning. They said that the af-fected person should be brought to the kiosk and they could not come out to help. This is a shame.

Luz social historyRefer the Jottings column in

last week’s issue of Mylapore Times. It will be of interest to know how Kennedy Street/s got this name.

I have seen a visual of the area around Our Lady of Light Church showing a pool of water outside the church, a giant cross mounted on a base near the gate and many trees all around the church. There must have been many water bodies of varying sizes in Luz decades ago.

A unit of NGO Sevalaya, SevaMart, recently opened at East Mada Street, Mylapore. Now this store is different. Here is the back story.

Gujarat’s popular doklas, fafdas and khakras are now available at a store on C. P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet.

Ajnabi Mithaai, known for its authentic Gujarati sweets and snacks has recently shifted its shop from T.T.K Road to C. P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet.

It is located in the building that houses Eating Circles restaurant.

Hailing from Gujarat, Jayanthilal Narayanji first opened the shop at Chennai’s Sowcarpet in the year 1961.

His son Promise Ku-mar Vasrani now manages the shop along with his family.

Says Kruthik P. Vasrani, the grand-son of Jayanthilal, “Our savouries like the mixture varieties are very popular.

We have over 100 varieties of snacks – ghatias (butter, masala, bhavanagiri), mixtures (sweet and spicy), khakras (pudina, punjabi, cheese, and whole wheat.)”

The store also has a live cooking counter for stuffed parathas (aloo, gobi) and chaats. Another specialty of Ajnabi Mittai is the special chutney they provide for chaats.

While Kruthik wants to keep the chutney’s recipe a secret, he says they follow the recipe of his grandmother Mrudula.” All three chutneys – sweet, garlic and spicy – are made under her supervision.”

Says V. Muralidharan, founder and managing trustee of Sevalaya, “We provide vocational training to under-privileged youth in tailoring, baking and organic farming, so they can produce these items.”

The proceeds from the sale at the store will be used for the NGO’s charitable activities. Sevalaya has also collaborated with traditional artisans from Pondicherry and Kanchipuram to sell handi-crafts. Says R. Ganesh, associ-ate vice-president of Sevalaya, “We procure the handi craft’s

base products from traditional artisans. Later the youth at our community college paint and design them. These are sold at the Mylapore store. This way, we are also able to provide an employ ment opportunity for these artisans.” You cannot miss the innovative mud

pots decorated-with intricate mehendi pat-terns on the display stands here. The store also sells rosewood paint-ings, kolu dolls, Tiruppur cotton T-shirts. Price of shirts start from Rs.250. Organic veggies and greens will be

The gods and goddesses of dozens of temples in this part of the city including those in Mylapore were brought in a procession to the Marina seashore to mark Masi Magam on March 9 morning. The rituals included a symbolic dip of the palaquins that carried the gods in the sea. Hundreds of people who were here for this occasion also had a dip in the sea, a symbolic act to wash away one’s sins.
