were able to settle upon a new meeting location for next year which both provides us with a
very nice meal, welcoming room and staff, and price which fits our budgetary goal. We will be
meeting at the Club at Longshore Lake during 2014-15 and plan to make that our new home.

2015 DUES NOTICE
Our Myles Standish Colony dues for the 2015 calendar year
are due and payable before the end of October 2014. If we wait
until the fall, our collection time is severely reduced since dues
collection should be completed prior to the State Meeting held
the third week in November. We know many of you travel north
over the summer and we thought you might be kind enough to
send us your dues now for 2015, so none of us have to worry
about it next fall. We would really appreciate it!
Dues are $30 per year, of which $20 goes to the state and
national organizations. Checks should be made out to: Myles
Standish Colony and returned by 1 June 2014 to:

NELLIE HEDSTROM Nellie Gushee Hedstrom is proud to be a native of the Pine
Tree State, Maine. She was born in Appleton, Maine and at-
tended schools in Appleton and Camden, Maine. Her interest in
nutritional science led her to the University of Maine where she
attained bachelors and masters degrees. She was a member of
the faculty of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension for
39 years and retired as Extension Professor of Nutrition Emerita
in 2005.
Nell and her husband Warren E. Hedstrom reside in Orono,
Maine during the summer months in the home that they built in
the early 80's. After retirement, Nell became more interested in
genealogy and established membership in The General Society
of Mayflower Descendants. She followed the footsteps of her
great-aunt Jeanette Johnson Sherman, who attained membership
and published the genealogy line to Francis Cooke's daughter
Jane. Jane was married to Experience Mitchell. When the line-
age was presented to the Society for her membership, the line-
age was denied. The reason for denial was that although Experi-
ence Mitchell was married to Jane Cooke, the line of her descen-
dents was through another wife, name unknown, of Experience
Mitchell. So Nell's membership is traced to Isaac Allerton. Nell
can also trace lineage to the Mayflower on her paternal side. In
the future she plans to document her lineage to Captain Myles
Standish and others who sailed on the Mayflower, as her cousins
have done.
Nell is the mother of Warren E. Hedstrom Jr., an attorney,
and Lisa K. Hedstrom, an architect, both residing in California.
Both retain membership in the Captain Myles Standish Colony.
2020 Logo Contest All GSMD members and Juniors are invited to join a com-
petition organized by the GSMD 2020 Committee to create a
national logo for the GSMD celebration of the 400th Anniver-
sary of the sailing of the Mayflower, the landing in Plymouth
and the establishment of the Pilgrim colony. State Societies
are asked to promote this contest in any manner they see fit.
Incorporate your ideas for both the celebration of this
event and perhaps a future marketing image of GSMD into a
design that you believe would be an appropriate symbol.
Your entry should be submitted directly to Harry P. Folger
3rd, Chairman, 2020 Committee, 346 Marshallville Road,
Woodbine, NJ 08270-9723 or by email to
SCHEDULE April 15, 2014 – logo submission deadline
June 2014 – five logo finalists published in the Mayflower
Quarterly
August 1, 2014 – deadline for final logo selection
September 2014 – logo winner announced at the Triennial
General Congress
NOTE TO SPONSORS OF JUNIOR MEMBERS
We would like to reach out to the young members of our
colony to make sure they become adult members in the future.
In an effort to do so, we would like to make contact through e-
mail to gain some feedback as to their interests. Please e-mail
their name & e-mail address to Nancy Fodi at
[email protected]. Thank you for your help. This
is very important for the continuity of our colony!
After Nell and her husband retired from the faculty of the
University of Maine, they bought a home in Naples to spend
winter months enjoying the sunshine and all the things that Flor-
ida has to offer.
PATRICIA MALLEY Patricia Ann Mogensen Malley was born in New Haven,
Connecticut on 19 December 1943. She is a daughter of Arthur
Tyler Mogensen (of Utica, New York) and Sara Frances Paine
(of New Haven). She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in
New Haven, received a bachelor degree in Art Education from
Southern Connecticut State University and masters degree in Art
Education from Central Connecticut State University. She had a
career as an Art teacher in the Connecticut public school system
at schools in Avon and Middletown. In 1968, she married
Ernest Matthew Malley, who was also an Art teacher in the
Connecticut public school system. They are the parents of two
children: Timothy James Malley and Patricia (Malley)
Shanahan; and grandparents of Jacob Matthew Shanahan and
Brooke Lainey Shanahan. After retiring, Patricia and Ernest
moved to Naples, Florida in 2001.
Patricia is proud to share with us that, through her father’s
side of the family, she is a descendant of Civil War veteran La-
fayette Tyler of Henderson, New York; Revolutionary War vet-
eran Abraham Tyler of Haddam, Connecticut; and Pilgrim
Stephen Hopkins who first came to this country in 1610, joining
the Jamestown colony, and after returning to England came back
to this county along with his family on the Mayflower in 1620.
The map to the left is
from the presentation by
Ronald Benson at the
January 2014 meeting.
This map identifies
the known ships which
came to New England
between 1620 and 1626.
Those who came on
the Sparrow, Swan, and
Charity in 1622 were af-
filiated with Thomas
Weston and although they
first lived at Plymouth
went on to found Wessa-
gussett prior to abandon-
ing that colony in early
1623.
Those who came on
the Katherine and Prophet
Daniel in 1623 were af-
filiated with Sir Robert
Gorges, Governor General
of New England, who also
settled at Wessagussett
before returning to Eng-
land in 1624.
Those who came on the Fellowship, Pilgrime, and Amytie
between 1623 and 1625 were sent by the Dorchester Company
and settled Cape Ann and Salem, which became the base from
which the Massachusetts Bay Colony would grow.
