Tuesday, December 1, 2009Objectives: Students will examine the issue of power, identity, and space by

evaluating the genocide of Rwanda. Opener: Today is World Aids Day. What do you know about HIV/AIDS(write down

actual information – not that you know a lot about it)? How is it transmitted? What is the largest population contracting AIDS/HIV today? What kinds of problems is it creating?

Activities: 1) Complete opener. Copy Homework. 2) Complete African and Colonialism handouts. 3) Begin the “Understanding Rwanda” handout and reading. Homework: Interview 3 people (1 adult and two kids) and ask them the questions

from the opener. 1) What do you know about HIV/AIDS? 2) How is it transmitted? 3) What is the largest population contracting AIDS/HIV today? 4) What kids of problems is it creating? THEN: reflect on their answers – what are the similarities and differences between them?

Africa and Colonialism

• Imperialism: When a larger country takes over a smaller country – they can take over the government (political imperialism) the economy (economic imperialism) or the culture (cultural imperialism).

Answer the questions on the handout using the color maps in your groups.

identity and space by examining the conflict in Rwanda. Opener: What are the differences between Hutus and Tutsis? (hint: look

at your HW from Wednesday, Nov. 25)Activities: 1. Complete Opener. Copy Homework. 2. Review opener. 3. Read handout on Rwanda and answer questions. 4. Watch first 30 minutes Hotel Rwanda and answer questions (if time). Homework: Describe the relationship between power, identity and space

in the Rwandan genocide. Think about the causes, the conflict itself and what happened afterward.

space in the conflict in Rwanda. Opener: Should the United States have tried to stop the massacres in Rwanda? Why

or why not? Explain your answer. Activities: 1. Complete opener. Copy homework. 2. Watch Hotel Rwanda. 3. Examine the “impact” of the Rwandan genocide on surrounding countries. 4. Summary Assessment (test grade): What is the relationship between power

and identity and space? Write at least a one-page response, using examples from each of the topics we discussed. Make generalizations and then support those generalizations with specific information from the three examples we studied: public housing segregation in Baltimore, colonialism in Africa, and the Rwandan genocide.

Homework: Complete Summary Assessment – due on Tuesday.
