ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: The Pelicans won Game One of the Southern Division Championship Series 4-1 over the Kinston Indians at BB&T Coastal Field Wednesday night.JustinGrimm tossed six innings of one-run, four-hit ball and his catcher, Vinny DiFazio cracked a two-run homer in the second inning that made the difference. Grimm worked out of abases-loaded, one-out jam in the rst and a second-and-third, one-out jam in the sixth. Clinging to a 2-1 lead for most of the night, the Pelicans nally broke through in the eighth with twoinsurance runs. Chris McGuiness , who struck out in his rst three at bats, led off with a booming double to center eld and moved up a base on Santiago Chirinos sacri cebunt. Ryan Strausborger looped a single over the drawn-in in eld and into center to bring home McGuiness and make it a 3-1 game. Two batters later Jared Prince camethrough with an opposite- eld double to right eld that plated Strausborger and gave the Pelicans a three-run advantage. Chirino and Prince both knocked three hits in the win. NewcomerMatt West capped the bullpens great night with a dominant 1-2-3 ninth to record the save and lock down an enormous win for Myrtle Beach.

REGULAR SEASON VS. THE INDIANS: The nal year of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans-Kinston Indians rivalry has seen many tight games between the two clubs. They split the20-game season set 10-10 with the home team winning six of ten at both BB&T Coastal Field and Grainger Stadium. 13 games were decided by one or two runs, including 11 straightmeetings from May 12-August 4. The Birds and K-Tribe made history on June 12 in Kinston when they played the longest game in the history of the Carolina League, a 23-inning 3-2 Indi-ans victory. In the record-breaking affair, 15 players logged eight or more at bats and both catchers, Zach Zaneski of Myrtle Beach and Kinstons Roberto Perez, caught every inning.15 pitchers, seven for the Pelicans and eight for the K-Tribe, combined to throw 654 pitches, 339 of them by Myrtle Beach. It was the second 23-inning game in Minor League Baseball thisseason, Jupiter won 2-1 at home against Clearwater in a Florida State League game on May 23. The Indians and Pelicans have met twice before in the CL postseason, with the second-halfchamp beating the rst-half winner both times. Myrtle Beach took out Kinston 2-1 in the 1999 SDCS on their way to a split-championship and the K-Tribe swept the Birds 2-0 in the 2002SDCS before falling to Lynchburg 3-1 in the Mills Cup Championship Series.Vinny DiFazio has crushed Kinston pitching in 12 games, batting .342 with four of his eight 2011 homeruns. In 18 games against the K-Tribe, Jared Prince has hit .329 with 13 RBIs and 13 runs scored while Leury Garcia has hit an even .300 in 15 games in the season series.Myrtle Beachs Game Two starter Chad Bell has a 0.89 ERA in ve games, two starts, against the Indians.

- TODAYS PITCHING PROBABLES -BELL: As a full- edged member of the rotation, lefty Chad Bell has found his groove in 2011. Over his last eight starts, the lefty has posted a 2.66 ERA to go along with his 2-2record while allowing only 40 hits in 44 innings. After changing his arm slot, Bells season seemed to turn a corner during his admirable ve-inning day at Kinston on June 12 in which heheld the line with ve shutout, one-hit innings and eight strikeouts as the Pelicans fought to break through in their eventual Carolina League-record 23-inning loss to the Indians. Enteringthat day, Bell had posted a 5.74 ERA through 14 appearances. Starting with that fateful afternoon, the southpaw dropped his ERA to 2.98 by allowing 17 earned runs over his last 66innings. His 2.32 ERA and 1.03 WHIP over that span are the best marks in the Carolina League. The 2009 14th-round pick looked good in a one-inning tune-up start on Monday, when hethrew nine pitches, seven strikes, as he set down the Red Sox 1-2-3 with a strikeout. In ve games against Kinston in 2011, Bell has allowed two runs in 20.1 innings (0.89 ERA).

JIMENEZ: Fellow southpaw Francisco Jimenez opposes Bell in Game Two tonight. The La Vega, Dominican Republic native has excelled both in the rotation and out ofthe bullpen this year for Kinston. He dominated the Pelicans in three relief outings, tossing eight and one-third shutout innings, including ve scoreless frames to get the K-Tribe from the12th through the 16th inning in the Indians historic 23-inning win over Myrtle Beach on June 12. In six starts since moving into the rotation on August 7, Jimenez has allowed six earnedruns in 30.2 innings, good for an ERA of 1.76. Signed by the Indians in 2007, the lefty went 8-1 with a 3.59 ERA for low-A Lake County. He also posted a 2-0 record and 1.74 ERA in vepostseason games as he helped lead the Captains to the Midwest League title.

NOT SO GRIMM: Pelicans right-hander Justin Grimm got the Game One start last night and he pitched like an ace. He found himself in a bases-loaded one-out jam in the rstinning, but he escaped trouble with strikeouts of Jesus Aguilar and Tyler Cannon. That began a string of four consecutive strikeouts. He gave up his only run in the third when Tyler Holtwalked, stole second and scored on Adam Abrahams RBI single. After going 1-2-3 in the fourth and fth, he ran into trouble in the sixth clinging to a 2-1 lead. A double and a walk startedthe inning and cleanup hitter Jeremie Tice bunted the runners to second and third. Grimm buckled down to induce a groundout from Aguilar before striking out Cannon to preserve the leadand end his night. Grimm picked up the win in six innings of work, allowing one run on four hits, walking four and striking out six.

WHAT A RELIEF!: Following in Grimms footsteps were three Myrtle Beach relievers who each threw a scoreless inning to lock down the one-run victory. Lefty Joe Ortiz wasrst out of the bullpen in the seventh and after allowing a pair of two-out singles he struck out Bo Greenwell to end the frame. Right-hander Ryan Rodebaugh worked a 1-2-3 eighthinning through the heart of the Kinston order, capping it with strikeouts of Jeremie Tice and Jesus A guilar. Matt West , making his second appearance in the Carolina League after beingpromoted from Short Season-A Spokane on Monday, was given the task of closing the game. The righty was consistently in the mid-90s with his fastball as he struck out Tyler Cannon andgot Casey Frawley on a yout before Roberto Perez hit a tapper back to the mound that ended the game and gave West the save.

WHOA, DIFAZIO: Catcher Vinny DiFazio has feasted on Kinston pitching this season and he kept it up in his rst at bat of the playoffs. With one on and one out in the secondinning, he crushed a two-run home run to left eld off starter Clayton Cook that made the difference in the Birds 4-1 win. The Hampton, NJ native batted .342 (13-38) with ten RBIs in12 regular season games against Kinston and ve of his nine homers overall this year have come off K-Tribe pitching. Behind the plate, DiFazio also helped guide Justin Grimm and threerelievers through the Game One victory. Since the start of the second half of the season and including last nights win, Pelicans hurlers had a 3.02 ERA with DiFazio behind the plate.

ONE BIG STEP: The Pelicans hope to continue a trend after their victory in last nights playoff opener. In 18 Carolina League postseason series since 2005, the Game One winner hasgone on to win the series 14 times. That includes a 9-3 mark in best-of- ve sets. With the wins by Myrtle Beach and Frederick last night, the home team has now gone 11-3 in best-of- veseries openers since 2005. The Pelicans hold an all-time postseason-series record of 3-2-1 and all three victories began with a home win in the rst game.

LOOKING BACK: The SDCS pits the rst-half champion Pelicans against the second-half champion Indians. In the last ten years of the Carolina League playoffs there have been 12rst-round meetings between rst- and second-half winners, with the rst-half champ going 7-5. Surprisingly, in eight matchups between a double-half winner and a wild card team, thewild card has gone 5-3 in the rst round. That trend will be tested in the NDCS when the double-half champ Frederick Keys take on the wild-card Potomac Nationals.

TEXAS IS TOPS: The Texas Rangers are regarded as having one of baseballs best farm systems. On the eld in 2011, they showed theyre far and away the club with the best minorleague af liates. The cumulative record of the Rangers minor league teams in 2011 was 431-332 (.565), an astounding 17 1/2 games better than the second-best organizational record,the Dodgers 412-348 mark (.542). Six out of seven Rangers af liates nished over .500 and amazingly, Myrtle Beachs record of 72-67 was the second-worst mark in the system. Triple-A Round Rock went 87-57 and won the PCL Northern division, while Double-A Frisco went 79-61 and is postseason bound in the Texas League. Low-A Hickory (79-58) won the SouthAtlantic League rst-half title and tied for the second-half crown as well. In Short Season ball, the AZL Rangers went 38-18 before falling in the semi nals, the DSL Rangers went 41-30and Spokane was the only club to nish with a losing record at 35-41. The combined win total is the highest in Texas Rangers franchise history.

FIRST-TO-WORST-TO-FIRST?: The Pelicans followed up their 40-29 rst-half record and Southern Division title with a 32-38 mark and last-place nish in the second half. Itsthe third straight season, but only the eighth time in the last 30 years that a CL rst-half champ came in last place in the second half. Only three of the previous seven teams won the rst-round playoff series against the second-half champ, but two of the three teams that did get through the rst round won the Mills Cup. Last year, Frederick won the Northern Division in therst half, but nished last to Potomac in the second before falling 3-1 in the playoffs to the P-Nats. The Pelicans aim to be more like the 2009 Lynchburg Hillcats, who went rst-to-worst inthe regular season, but beat Wilmington 3-2 in the NDCS en route to a sweep of Salem in the Mills Cup Championship Series to win the Carolina League title.

LEAGUE LEADERS: Jared Prince tied the Carolina League single-season record for hit by pitches with 30 and also led the loop in on base percentage (.376). He nished inthe top ten in batting average (.282, 7th), hits (135, 6th), RBIs (72, 5th) and doubles (30, T-7th). He was the second-toughest hitter to strike out as he only whiffed in 8.3 percent of his atbats. He wasnt the only Bird on the year-end leaderboards. Ryan Strausborger legged out nine triples to tie Winston-Salems Tyler Saladino for the league lead and nished tied forfourth in the loop in steals with 31. Strausborger also ranked in the top ten in hits (132, 8th) and runs (71, T-7th). With 11 out eld assists, the All-Star tied for the fourth-most in the league.Despite missing over two months with a broken collarbone and only playing in 69 games, Mike Olt knocked 14 home runs to tie for eighth in the circuit. Leury Garcia tied for sixthin the loop with 30 steals and his double-play partner Santiago Chirino proved to be the fourth-hardest batter to K as he only struck out 10.6 percent of the time. Zach Zaneski ran up the leagues longest hitting streak when he hit safely in 18 consecutive games from June 12 to July 22.

MEANWHILE UP NORTH: There is one other series going on in the Carolina League postseason. The Northern Division Championship Series got started last night when the Fred-erick Keys beat the Potomac Nationals 5-1 in a rain-shortened opener that was called in the bottom of the sixth due to rain. Jake Pettit threw all six innings for the Keys, holding the P-Natsto one run on three hits. Frederick scored four runs in the third inning on back-to-back homers by Miguel Abreu and Brian Ward, then they added one more run in the sixth and loaded thebases when the game was called.
