Director’s Message

Since 2004, MCM has been here for the people of the Ethiopia. I deeply honor the many people, especially the missionaries and medical volunteers from Korea and other foreign countries, who have dedicated their lives to serve the people in this remote place. At first, MCM was a small clinic set up with the help of Ethiopians and Koreans, but with the sincere request of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, it was recreated into a hospital housing 300 patients.MCM offers quality hospital services to the sick, especially for the poor, and serves communities directly. Moreover, MCM has now become the most trusted hospital in Ethiopia, as well as a designated hospital for important persons who are visiting the country. MCM is in itself a miracle, a fruit of blessing given by God. Without God’s help and prayers from our friends all over the world, this would not have been possible. MCM will continue to grow in both medical and spiritual aspects. We sincerely wish for MCM to soon become a great cornerstone for missionary work in Ethiopia. May the blessings of God be with all those who have prayed for and supported MCM Hospital. Without a doubt, year 2011 has been a year of great achievement for our hospital. However, we also recognize that our goal to create MCM into a world-class health facility will require much effort to achieve. We are ready for the challenge.

Senior Pastor, Myungsung Church Kim, Sam-hwan

Hallelujah! Everything is grace from our healing God.Myungsung Christian Medical Center (MCM) is a general hospital with modern facilities that has been built to preach the gospel of God through medical care. We are devotedly working hard to treat physical sickness as well as heal spiritually. In 2011, we were honored to meet numerous precious people through various events at MCM. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, South Korean Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Sung-hwan Kim, South Korean President Myung-bak Lee, and many others have visited MCM in 2011. Also, we were able to set up a foothold for Ethiopia’s medical development through Health Expo 2011 and the 1st Ethiopian Korean Medical Conference. Moreover, we have successfully launched many annual medical projects including Facing Africa, Open Heart Surgery, and Mobile Clinics throughout the year of 2011. With Senior Pastor Kim Sam-hwan of Myungsung Church, we celebrated the completion of the Good News Church, the ground-breaking of a new hospital building, and the completion of Myungsung Medical College (MMC). Furthermore, we are planning to cultivate future medical professionals through Myungsung Medical College to lead Ethiopia’s medical development and innovation. Through MMC, we will do our best to nurture excellent professionals, implement Ethiopia’s medical infrastructure, and provide advanced education to Ethiopians. MCM’s mission is to show the love of Jesus Christ by providing advanced medical services to Ethiopians who are unable to get proper medical care, in cooperation with missionary organizations, churches, and non-governmental organizations all over the world. We sincerely request your prayers and interests for MCM and MMC, so that we can continuously be used as God’s tool to heal physically and spiritually in Ethiopia.

History of MCM

Relations between Korea and Ethiopia grew close during the Korean War between 1950 and 1953. It was during this time of intense conflict in Korean history that Ethiopia came to assist Korea by sending its troops under the U.N. Coalition Forces. This military support was of utmost importance to Korea; therefore, many Koreans feel obligated to support Ethiopia in its effort to become a developed country. When Reverend Kim Sam-hwan’s (senior pastor of the Myungsung Presbyterian Church) visited Ethiopia, a beautiful and open land of nine hectares was given to Myungsung International Development by the city of Addis Ababa in 1996 for the construction of a hospital. Located in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, MCM started its operations on November 25, 2004. It was outfitted with state-of-the-art modern facilities and has been treating a continuously increasing number of patients. From the beginning, the objective of the hospital had been to meet the healthcare needs of the Ethiopian people and further the development of medical professionals inthis developing country. It is by the grace of God that MCM could be a small token of appreciation from Korea to Ethiopia. It is the Korean way of giving back to the Ethiopian community, and we hope that it will be a vessel of relief for the sick. We believe that the MCM will be a tool for God’s healing hand in Ethiopia.

2011 ANNUAL REPORT 17

The Korean Government has always deeply appreciated Ethiopia’s military support during the Korean War. Even before the Korean Government reached out to Ethiopia in appreciation to its contribution to the Korean Independence, non-government organizations had come first to Ethiopia with the aid of churches and NGOs. Therefore, I want to show my gratitude and encouragement to MCM for showing such self-sacrifice and dedication in their works and services in helping Ethiopia. There is nothing more precious than life on earth, is there? By taking every single Ethiopian life valuable, treating people in need with all your hearts, and giving new lives to those who are dying, you are doing the works like those of angels in heaven. I have heard that MCM has greater plans for the future including hospital expansion and the establishment of medical school.I sincerely hope that all the plans will be accomplished with God’s help. Since I have seen how much you pray for MCM, I think there will be no problem in promoting these plans. There are medical volunteers from foreign countries. There are interns and volunteers from Korea as well. I want to thank everyone here for those different kinds of services taking place at MCM. I wish every one of you would always stay healthy and be loved by the people of Ethiopia. I pray that God’s richest blessings be upon you and MCM. Thank you.”

Facing Africa teams came to Ethiopia twice in 2011— in February and in October. 43 patients and 36 patients weretreated respectively, totaling 79 patients who were treated in 2011.

2. Free Mobile Clinic

From time to time, MCM sends a team of doctors and other personnel to very rural areas of the country where medical care is almost non-existent. This opens an incredible door for both MCM and any visiting missionaries to share God’s love with those who can neither access nor afford treatment and may have heard of our loving Savior, Jesus Christ. In 2011, MCM held Free Mobile Clinics four times and more than 5,000 people were treated through these services.

Department of General Surgery

The General Surgical Department has a 24 hour service run by three Ethiopian general surgeons and one Norwegian trauma surgeon. In the beginning of 2011, Dr. Chang, an experienced general and vascular surgeon with many years in clinical practice, joined the department from the USA. This year, we started breast clinic and vascular surgery services that were previously not available in Ethiopia. Major and minor surgeries performed at MCM have been a great contribution toward implementing new advanced technology in the field of medical surgery in Ethiopia. In addition, the number of laparoscopic cholecystectomy has been increasing significantly each year showing that the community has become more aware of new advanced medical technologies. The department performs a wide variety of surgical procedures that account for many different types of patients such as: goiter, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), hernia, hemorrhoids, and trauma. Some surgical procedures are performed more frequently than others. The common surgical procedures that are performed in the surgery department are listed below :

One special feature of MCM is the availability of laparoscopic surgery, which is an operation performed through small incisions with the aid of a camera. Because laparoscopy enables surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgeries, there have been less post surgical complications.

Department of Internal Medicine

The Department of Internal Medicine is an extremely vital part of the hospital, contributing to the highest patient turnover rate both in its outpatient and inpatient service. As a result, it ranks highest in terms of income generation for the hospital. Our GI (gastrointestinal) Unit is now second to none in the country.. Since 2004, the Department of Internal Medicine has been performing diagnostic endoscopies for patients. Specifically, upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopies are performed to examine the gastrointestinal tract and other procedures such as bronchoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy are used to examine other organs throughout the respiratory and digestive system. Through these examinations, tumors are often detected and biopsied to further analyze the characteristics and severity of the disease. Since this department is sought by many patients who have problems in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tract, most diagnosis are as follows :

Neurosurgery

The Neurosurgical Department at MCM is responsible for spine and brain surgeries for pediatric and adult patients. . This department is staffed by full-time consultant neurosurgeons and is covered by residents in collaboration with Black Lion Hospital. Due to intake of vitamins and nutrients, many Ethiopian babies suffer from hydrocephalus. With the presence of advanced medical equipment, our department conducts minimally invasive hydrocephalus surgeries to those unfortunate patients. In addition, transsphenoidal hypophysectomy, and craniotomy are common surgical procedures that are performed in this department to treat patients with pituitary tumors and brain aneurysms.

Department of Orthopedics

Orthopedic surgical service in Ethiopia is a relatively new specialty with limited number of professionals in service. Many of the patients are unaware of this service and tend to go to local bonesetters, often causing disastrous complications. Along with earlier accomplishments, an MCM program to enhance musculoskeletal service to the general public has been completed in 2011. Referrals come from throughout Ethiopia, and most of the patients are suffering from a delay in treatment or complications caused by infections. This results in a significant challenge in achieving satisfactory results. The Orthopedic department has added Dr. Wendaferaw to the staff of MCM, joining Dr. Hailu ShewaAmare and Dr. Donald Pearson. Dr. Wendaferaw completed his residency at Black Lion Hospital and has also completed a one year fellowship in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. The SIGN (Surgical Implant Generation Network) intramedullary nail implemented in 2010 has been used extensively throughout 2011 with increasing skill. The SIGN database has been updated regularly for scientific studies. Materials and supplies have increased and purchasing procedures have been put in place. Through the issuing of a grant, a Stryker Arthroscopy System was purchased and donated to MCM. Training of the ancillary personnel is in progress. Volunteer foreign specialists are a major part of the teaching in the long range enhancement of orthopedic service at MCM. During 2011, visiting pediatric orthopedists, hand surgeons, spine surgeons, and general orthopedists have generously shared their knowledge and skills with us and residents at Black Lion. In addition, we were joined by a resident from France and students from the U.S. participating in our summer program of 2011.

Pediatrics

The department of pediatrics at MCM has two major areas of pediatric care: the prevention program and the treatment program. The prevention program ensures the health of babies through growth monitoring, vaccinations for babies who are 10-20 weeks old, and vitamin A supplementation. For the treatment for pediatric patients, there are often collaborations with specialists from other departments such as Neurosurgery, Burn Unit, ICU, and OB-GYN in order to decide the most effective option that is available for the patients.

The Pediatric Department usually consults about 30-40 outpatients per day. Most of the patients who come to this department have conditions such as lung diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, and ordinary fever or cough. The department is also responsible for examining the health of all the newborns that are delivered. Newborns with complications or diseases are transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for specialized.

Department of Pharmacy

Since its establishment, the MCM Pharmacy has been serving customers to procure safe, effective, and affordable medicines. The MCM pharmacy always works hard to satisfy the need of patients, both inpatients and outpatients, by constantly ensuring the sustainable availability of medicines and medical supplies. It will continue playing its part to improve the health care system of the hospital.

By the end of 2011, the MCM Pharmacy had almost doubled its service. We purchased over 14 million birrs of medicines and medical supplies from different sources and also donated some medications to different health centers in the sub-city. MCM Pharmacy has increased the number of staff and established the Drug and Therapeutics Committee in 2011. In addition, there has been a significant improvement in the stock management by using computerized inventory system. Moreover, MCM Pharmacy added additional checking step for safe and accurate dispensing of medications.

Department of Nursing MCM Chapel

The nursing department is the backbone of the hospital as it manages the laundry along with the day to day activities of nurses, cleaners, and porters. The department is led by the Matron and two assistant supervising nurses. A senior Korean nurse also works in the department as an advisor. The nurses at MCM play a vital role in every section of the hospital, from the OPD to the operating room. Although there are many different types of nurses at MCM, they all have a common goal of assuring the best care for their patients.

MCM Chapel is a vital part of MCM hospital, since MCM is a Christian hospital built by Myungsung Church in Korea. Therefore, MCM hospital has two ultimate goals—introduce the gospel of God and give medical care to the Ethiopians. The goal of MCM chapel is to spread the Good News to the patients and to the people of Ethiopia. The MCM Chapel heals the spiritual activities of MCM hospital for the patients and the staff at MCM.

Evidently, this achievement is a cumulative outcome of committed cleaners, nursing department coordinators, and all staff members of the hospital.

4. Porters : Nursing Department also supervises the work of porters who transport patients for examinations and treatments.
