Mental Health First Aid

Training

Instructors

Atlanta Area

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the initial help given to a

person showing symptoms of mental illness or in a mental

health crisis until appropriate help can be engaged. It is an 8-

hour interactive course that teaches the risk factors and

warning signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety disorders,

trauma, psychotic disorders and substance use disorders.

MHFA builds an understanding of how these illnesses affect

people, provides an overview of common treatments, and

teaches basic skills for providing help to someone who may be

experiencing symptoms. Participant manuals cost $15.00 each

The training does not prepare someone to diagnose mental

illnesses or provide therapy. Much like traditional Red Cross

First Aid, MHFA is designed to help paraprofessional and

laypersons provide emergency support until an individual can

be linked to appropriate professional resources. Attendees of

the full 8-hour course will receive a three-year certification in

MHFA.

THE POWER OF THE "P"

POLICE INVOLVED SHOOTINGS: The Process

Instructor:

Larry Moses

There is arguably no single event that can traumatize a police agency more than a

police officer involved shooting incident. This course will provide those with the

knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to handle any deadly force incident. What

goes through police officers minds when they see, hear and feel? The study explored

the emotional, psychological and physical reactions of 80 officers and deputies during

and after 113 incidents in which they shot someone, using a combination of

questionnaires and personal interviews. Scene response, legal issues, administrative

investigation, officer well-being, the lawsuit, criminal investigation, and media issues

during officer involved shootings.

Do You Know Who I Am?

Instructors: CSOSA

Tyra McClelland

Jamie Henson

Charron Carter

This workshop will provide insight into two specialized Court Programs located in

Washington DC; Traffic and Alcohol and post-conviction Drug Court programs.

Participants will examine the model of the programs and see how the media displays

drugs and/or alcohol. Participants can take part in activities identifying trends and

behaviors that may affect the population we serve.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE Instructor: Larry Moses

Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical

conduct of sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment when submission to or

rejection of this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual’s employment,

unreasonably interferes with an individual’s work performance or creates an

intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment.

Women in Law Enforcement

Overcoming Challenges

Instructors:

Various - Women Only - Panel Discussion

Focusing on who they really are, their purpose, and the promotion of authenticity,

allows the Black woman in policing to be the best at what they do. Authenticity allows

for the creation of healthy work relationships, and thwarts the negative experiences

that are sometimes a part of the reality of Black women in law enforcement. In

focusing on leadership, relationship-building, and self-validation, Black women in law

enforcement can work at the level of their greatest potential without ‘losing’ themselves

in the process, and can also develop their greatest leadership abilities. The workshop

will include: A general discussion of the history of women officers in policing; The ability

to navigate potential hazards; Supervisory dynamics; Developing leadership; and a

discussion on living and working with vision, purpose, and respect.

L IFE WORKSHOPS by

LAW ENFORCEMENT'S ROLE IN DISMANTLING

the SCHOOL TO PRISON PIPELINE

Instructor:

Dwanna Nicole

Across the country, schools are using harsh disciplinary policies and practices that

are leading to negative educational outcomes for children, especially children of

color. Police can work with school leaders to ensure that extreme school disciplinary

practices including suspensions, expulsions, and school based arrests, do not push

students out of school and into the criminal justice system. This workshop will

examine the role of police in schools and provide examples of collaborative

agreements between school districts and law enforcement agencies and the positive

they are having on youth.

Urban Theory: Approaches of Theory Used in Law Enforcement

Instructors:

Jakisha Jones

This course focuses on Urban Riots reviewed through the socio-spatial and critical

theory approaches; home grown terrorists? The militarization of American Law

Enforcement; and Public Policy and Metropolitan Problems.

SURVIVING VERBAL CONFLICT

Instructor:

(Ret.) Chief Harry Dolan

This training provides public safety professionals with time tested communication

skills proven to help deescalate volatile situations, safeguard fellow offices emotional

and professional well being, and significantly enhance the agency's professional

image.

Police Departments and Youth Community Interventions Instructors:

Lt. Wayland Cubit

During this class participants will be introduced to a proactive form of Police

Community Relations. The Oklahoma City Police Departments FACT (Family

Awareness and Community Teamwork) Unit. This approach to law

enforcement goes beyond the traditional policing model of reacting to crime

by arresting and incarcerating criminals. Participant will learn how to identify

a need for community programing and partnerships and target areas for

positive youth related activity. The course will specifically detail program

development, goals and objectives, staff selection, budgeting, and other

essential components key for successful implementation.
