Cerro Negro, Ice Cascade. The 250-m eter-high ice cascade hanging on the south side of Cerro Negro, a peak northwest of Santiago, has long been a challenge to local climbers. C. Buracchio and I first climbed the mountain (4975 m eters, 16,324 feet) by its north side to examine the ground. A few days later we placed a camp on the south side by the G laciar Olivares Beta at 4600 meters. From there we descended to the foot of the cascade and climbed it on January 28. It varied in steepness from 60° to 90°.
