NMHU News:

LAS VEGAS, NM — The historic Rodgers Hall renovation at New Mexico Highlands University received a top architectural award.

The project architects, Baker Architecture + Design, won a Distinguished Architecture Merit Award from the American Association of Architectsof New Mexico in August 2020. The firm is based in Albuquerque.

The AIA NM jury for the awards wrote, ”The jury felt that the architects have masterfully given timeless sensibilities and a subsequent new life tothis building for decades to come.”

“Our 2019 renovation of Rodgers Hall aimed to incorporate modern systems and materials while harmoniously showcasing the building’shistoric qualities,” said Mark Baker, principal architect of Baker Architecture + Design. “Modern interiors highlight architect John Gaw Meem’soriginal building details and Lloyd Moylan’s historic murals as key elements of place and identity in Rodgers Hall.”

Sylvia Baca, the facilities and planning director at Highlands, said Rodgers Hall was built in 1936 and is on the National Historic Register.

“It was important to bring this beautiful building in the Spanish Colonial architectural style back to its original splendor and brilliance whilemodernizing it to meet the needs of today,” Baca said. “Some of the design highlights for the building renovation on the first floor include theheritage room, a spacious and modern classroom, and a state-of-the-art governance board room. Rodgers Hall again houses the Office of thePresident, Office of Academic Affairs, and Office of Finance and Budget, which are on the second floor.”

Baca said Highlands worked with the New Mexico State Historic Preservation Office to preserve historic elements of Rodgers Hall such as theDepression-era murals by Lloyd Moylan.

That boom in online transactions has allowed Chipotle topost an overall sales decline for the second quarter ofonly 9.8%, significantly smaller than the 11.5% decreaseanticipated by industry observers.

During that quarter the company closed 30 of its 2,670restaurants, many of which were located in shoppingmalls.

At the same time, Chipotle built 37 new restaurants, andof that total, 21 included structural drive-up features.

Altogether, around 100 of the company’s locations havenow embraced the drive-through format, officially calleda Chipotlane.  But Chipotle has also announced thatbecause the feature has been so well received, it plans tobuild at least 1,000 similar stores between now and2025.

In a statement issued upon the release of the company’ssecond quarter figures, Brian Nicol, Chipotle chiefexecutive officer, said stores with drive-up features,“continue to perform very well and are helping enhanceguest access and convenience, as well as increase newrestaurant sales, margins, and returns.”

Founded in the summer of 1993 in Denver, Chipotle, with an average store size between 2,200 and 2,500square feet, has a strong presence primarily on the Eastand West coasts.

It currently has just over 170 outlets combined inArizona, Colorado, and New Mexico.

The latest annual report looking at the fiscal conditionand challenges of metropolitan areas across the countryunderline the negative impact of the Covid-19 outbreakand subsequent economic shutdown.

According to the  City Fiscal Conditions 2020  reportpublished by the Washington-based National League ofCities, nearly 90 % of all cities will prove less able in fiscalyear 2021 to meet the fiscal needs of their communitiesthan they were in the previous fiscal year.

On average, the nation’s cities are anticipating a 13%decline in 2021 fiscal year revenues over fiscal year2020, with sales tax revenue seeing an 11% drop, andincome tax receipts off by 3.4%.

The picture, according to the report, looks even morechallenging in the face of likely declines in both federaland state support: “In this environment, cities’ balanced-budget requirements and revenue-raising restrictions”are resulting in service cuts, hiring freezes, and rollbacksin capital projects.

The report notes that the revenue decline caused by thepandemic is more severe than most U.S. citiesexperienced during the Great Recession.

Because of a lag time of up to 18 months and morebetween changed economic conditions and the impacton revenue, the report suggests that further city servicecuts and capital project cancellations may be in theoffing.

In a press release accompanying the report, it was notedthat the revenue decline that took 6 years to fully playout in the Great Recession is “already happening in justthe few short months of this pandemic downtown,”adding: “And it won’t go away easily.”

For the third month in a row, consumer spending hasincreased, according to just-released CommerceDepartment statistics.

The report showed that spending nationally was up by1.2 percent in July, prompting some analysts to believethat the trend line is suggestive of a long-range andslowly-developing economic recovery.

In actual dollars, the July numbers stood at $536 billion, compared with June’s $529 billion.

The report also indicated that sales were up by an evenhigher 1.7 percent over where they stood in the weeks ofFebruary, just as the Covid-19 outbreak made itspresence known and the country entered an economiclockdown.

Notes the report: “Retail trade sales were up 0.8 percentfrom June 2020, and 5.8 percent above last year. Non-store retailers were up 24.7 percent from July 2019,while food and beverage stores were up 11.1 percent.”

The stronger spending numbers come at the same timethat the Federal Reserve has issued a new reportshowing that the country’s industrial production was upby 3 percent, although that increase was smaller thanJune’s numbers which showed a 5.7 percent gain.

The Fed report additionally showed factory capacityoutput at 70.7 percent last month, up from 68.5 percentin June.

The most notable gains were in motor vehicles and partsproduction, which posted a 28.3 percent increase; whileoil and gas well drilling was off 8 percent.

Gains in the construction market group for July showed a1.4 percent gain over June; followed by a significantlylarger 2.9 percent increase in May. The constructionsector was hit with a 12 percent decline in April as theinitial effects of the economic lockdown were being felt.

Continued the Fed report: “The indexes for all of themajor market groups advanced in July, though by lessthan in June,” adding that “consumer energy products, business supplies, and defense and space equipment alsoposted gains of more than 2 percent.”

On a picturesque summer day in July, I stood alongsidePresident Trump as he signed the White House HispanicProsperity Initiative. The Executive Order is particularlyimportant to me. I have had the good fortune of living theAmerican Dream and now, thanks to President Trump’sleadership, future generations will have an opportunityto accomplish whatever they set their minds to.

Prosperity has been the bedrock of the TrumpAdministration and the results were clear at the start ofthe year and as we approach the next phase of the GreatAmerican Comeback. In June alone, NewMexico added 26,300 new jobs. Before the CoronavirusPandemic, New Mexico saw an addition of  40,000 newjobs, 9,600 construction jobs, and 3,000 manufacturingjobs as a result of the Trump administration.

Now, compare this with the track record of the Obama-Biden Administration and the campaign promises of aBiden-Harris ticket. Under the economic direction of theObama-Biden Administration, New Mexico lost  8,500construction jobs  and  5,700 manufacturing jobs. Theaverage unemployment rate in the state during theObama-Biden Administration was  7.1 percent. Despiteour legislative efforts and accomplishments, we foundourselves beholden and subject to the big governmentmodel preferred by Democrats in Washington.

New Mexico is now a top 10 energy producer in Americathanks to President Trump’s deregulatory agenda. Fossilfuels support over 90,000 jobs in our state, contributingabout $13 billion to our economy over the past fouryears. Our oil and natural gas boom have revived ourstate’s budget, too. Schools benefited from therecord $2.2 billion in oil and natural gas tax revenues.

Even with an abhorrent track record in Washington, JoeBiden is trying to pitch New Mexicans again thisNovember. What’s worse is that he’s adopted policiesthat are popular among social circles in San Franciscoand New York City but have no place in the actuallivelihoods of New Mexicans. Biden and Harris wantto  repeal  President Trump’s tax cuts; making NewMexicans return the  $1,391  they were able to pocketthanks to tax reform. Joe Biden has locked arms with anunfeasible energy agenda.

Apple's famed supply chain largely relies on productiontaking place in and around China, with the carefullycultivated group of suppliers working in close proximityto assembly partners for efficient construction of Appleproducts. With continuing threats against its businessoperations in China, Apple is allegedly seeking to bringmore of the work to other areas, mitigating the risk ofevents such as a redo of the  US-China trade war  oranother global pandemic like COVID-19.

According to sources of Reuters, Apple partners Foxconnand Pegatron are looking into building new factoriesbased in Mexico. Sources with "direct knowledge of thematter" claim it is directly due to major global eventscausing issues that could have been avoided with supplychain diversification.

While details about local partners remains unknown, twosources claim Foxconn's plans involve the production ofiPhones on behalf of Apple from the factory. However, another source said Apple isn't directly involved inproceedings, but that may change down the line.

Foxconn is expected to give a decision on the factory inlate 2020, with work on the facility anticipated to startshortly after the choice is made. Foxconn already has fivefactories in operation in Mexico, producing televisionsand servers.

Pegatron is thought to be in discussions with lenders fora new facility in Mexico, that would be used to assemblechips and other components. It is unknown if it is relatedto Apple products at this time.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation iscontinuing its efforts to repave and revitalize Paseo delPueblo and will be working into 2021 to finish theproject.

Repaving Paseo del Pueblo has been an ongoing effortfrom the 2019 southern phase - paving north from StateRoad 518 - to the current phase, which will seerenovations to Taos' downtown highway. Planning hasbeen ongoing for several years for the construction andnumerous public meetings have been held to informcommunity members.

"As of now, they are looking to begin working on phase1C by the end this week and to have phase 1 completedaround Labor Day," said Jim Murray, NMDOT publicinformation officer.

Phase 1C refers to the current status of the nearly $22million project near Albright Street.

Phase 1 of the project will add new sidewalks, pavementand bike lanes in the Albright Street area withsubsequent phases moving north into the downtown.Phase 2 will focus the construction north up to QuesnelLane and phase 3 will consist of the downtown plaza areaof the road.

Portions of the road will be widened to accommodate fora continuation of the four-lane highway north up to theLos Pandos intersection. As part of the project, the Silerand Los Pandos Road intersection will be realigned tobetter accommodate for traffic flow.

Street lights will be installed at the Albright intersectionas well as the Montecito Road intersection near TaosPueblo.

During construction, crews will be closing routes andcreating detours to direct traffic around closedintersections.

Currently Paseo is closed to left-hand turns from LaPosta Road and the median between La Posta andAlbright Street has been blocked off.

The project will mark the largest road constructionproject in Taos history and will be worked onthroughout the pandemic.

According to Murray, workers are supposed to wearmasks at all times and practice social distancingmeasures whenever possible in a construction zone.

The department will be adhering to the governor'semergency order and will continue work unless toldotherwise.

"The threat of another lockdown is always looming inthe back of everyone's minds, and it adds a specialurgency to getting the work done as quickly aspossible," Murray said.

Murray said the workers are under no specialcircumstances when it comes to the state public healthorder and must be adhering to it just like any memberof the public.

"Keep in mind that wearing a mask while workingoutside in 90 degree weather is difficult, but it is stillrequired," Murray said in an email.

Senior housing developer Link Senior Development islaunching its own in-house brand, with a developmentpipeline that includes seven sites in four states. And thePortland, Oregon-based firm tapped a company thatspecializes in managing new senior housingdevelopments to operate the brand.

Ativo Senior Living will be operated by Insight SeniorLiving, Link President, CEO and founder Ron Ziebart toldSenior Housing News. Construction is already underwayon the brand’s first community in Yuma, Arizona and firstmove-ins are expected in early 2021. The plannedcommunity consists of 55 assisted living units and 24memory care units. Further Ativo communities areplanned for Prescott Valley, Arizona; Buckeye, Arizona;and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Link is also working onentitling three sites in southern California.

Based in West Linn, Oregon, Insight Senior Livingprovides management and consulting services fordevelopers building new communities includingmarketing plans, coordinating vendor relationships, training and hiring protocols, and hiring initial on-siteteams. The firm also advises owners on stabilizingunderperforming properties and transitioning operatorsin communities. Among its  other projects  is aMontessori-based memory care community.

Insight President and CEO LisaAnn Shelton has a long-standing professional relationship with Ziebart. A fewyears ago, Shelton proposed working together with himin the near future, she told SHN.

But Ziebart was focused on establishing and stabilizingLink Senior Development, which provides developmentand investment services for its internal group as well aspartnering with other Seniors Housing owner/ operators.

About a year ago, Link disposed of six communities anddecided to redeploy the proceeds toward expanding itsworkforce and to launch Ativo, Ziebart told SHN. So hereached out to Insight.

“He said, ‘I’m ready. Let’s do something together,’”Shelton said.

Ativo Senior Living will initially focus on thesouthwestern United States and include a mix ofindependent living, assisted living and memory care. TheYuma development is the smallest of the projects underdevelopment. Ativo’s sweet spot is between 150 to 200units, primarily private pay with a mix of wellness andupscale amenities, at reasonable rates.

“It’s being driven by the fluency of the markets we’reembedded in.  If we were to put things on a scale of 1-10(10 being the high end). In the past, we  have avoidedbuilding the 10’s and we also have also avoided buildingthe fives,” Ziebart said. “We’ve done very well in the pastin tertiary markets. And we built sevens and eights allday long.”

Shelton believes that Insight’s consulting experience willposition Ativo for quick growth and innovation.

“One of the things that we’ve always done is, we go intocommunities and learn as much as we can about thatlocal community — why are they there, what intereststhem, what’s significant about the local area — so that wecan reflect those interests and desires in theprogramming,” she said.

The impact felt when an employee leaves is exacerbatedwhen labor markets are tight. Leaders at all levels in theorganization need to be cognizant of the message theiractions send to employees when someone leaves.

“Leaders are always being watched. How the leadershipreacts when someone leaves is going to impact howeveryone else reacts,” says Marissa Levin, co-founder ofSuccessful Culture International, and a culture andleadership expert.

“If they are transparent, honest, and don’t act like the skyis falling, they acknowledge the loss, but pivot quicklyinto fill that gap, employees will take that cue, and thingswill go on without a glitch.” she says.

If you feel that workers today don’t have the sameloyalty to employers that previous generations did, youare correct. “Younger generations definitely have lesstolerance for being unhappy,” says Levin. “They are justnot going to stay in a job if it’s not fulfilling a purpose thatthey believe in.”

So, what can employers in construction do to attract andkeep employees on the job in this market? Levin offersfive key strategies.

Career Development – No opportunity to grow in apreferred job and career.

Work-Life Balance – Better work-life balance, whichincludes more favorable schedules, shorter commutetimes and scheduling flexibility.

Manager Behavior – Unprofessional or unsupportivemanagers.  Exit interviews can be a useful tool inidentifying the reasons why employees are leaving, provided they ask the right questions.

1. PAY ATTENTION TO EXIT INTERVIEWS

When people leave an organization, it’s critical to findout why.  According to the 2018 Retention Report fromthe Work Institute the top three reasons employeesleave are:

“The goal of the exit interview should be to find outwhere the company did well or fell short oncommunication or meeting expectations,” saysLevin.    While exit interviews can be a useful tool, it’sabout more than just collecting data. Companies need toanalyze and share the information and then follow upwith action.

Levin cautions that exiting employees might not becomfortable providing answers. “If you haven’t alreadydeveloped a culture of trust, when an employee leavesthey are not all of sudden going to divulge everything toyou,” she says.

2. EXAMINE YOUR MISSION, VALUES AND VISION

“Problems such as high attrition, low trust, low morale, and  low engagement  are all a result of a compromisedculture,” says Levin.    Companies that start to deviatefrom their mission, vision, and values struggle.    Sherecommends that businesses re-engineer their hiringprocesses to ensure that new hires have the technicalcompetence and are culturally aligned with thecompany’s core values before they begin. “Interviewingis the key piece to ensure that you have strong retentionof great people,” says Levin.

PCL Construction, ranked #98 on FORTUNE magazine’sBest Places to Work, and #7 on  Engineering News-Record’s  Top 400 list of general contractors,  usesbehavioral aptitude tests such as the Predictive Index tohelp gain a clear understanding of the motivating needsand behaviors of potential team members. “We use atwo-pronged approach to seek out interest and if thepotential candidate seems like a good fit, the next stepswould include an in-person interview,” says  DiannaHemphill-O’Byrne, communications specialist for PCL.

80 percent felt stressed  because of inefficientcommunication within their company.

36 percent don’t know where to find theinformation they need to complete their work.

63 percent are prepared to quit  because they arefrustrated with the way their companycommunicates.

Communication is an essential skill in every industry. Inconstruction, it is especially important since the stakeson a worksite can be higher than they are in a boardroomor behind a desk. In fact,  one in every 10 constructionworkers are injured every year.

If communication on a construction site fails, not onlycan it potentially cause problems and delays for theproject, but it can also result in damage to equipment orproperty or, in the worst case, injury or death tomembers of your crew.

Before we dive into our top tips for effectivecommunication in construction, we’ll first break downthe consequences of miscommunication.

Consequences of Miscommunication in Construction

Communication failures happen in construction all thetime despite being essential to completing any task.Dynamic Signal’s  2019 State of EmployeeCommunication and Engagement Study  found that 36percent of employees were in an unsafe situationbecause of poor communication.

The  study  also went on to report the following aboutemployees:

Miscommunication errors aren’t just inconvenient —they’re also expensive. A 2018 study by the consultancygroup FMI Corp found that miscommunication cost theconstruction industry $177 billion each year. The highcosts are a result of the time spent on tasks like findingproject information and resolving conflicts.

The good news is that communication is a skill that canbe taught, practiced, and improved to decrease thenumber of communication issues within your team. Hereare 10 steps any manager or crew can follow to improvecommunication in construction sites.

Writing clearlyDrawing clearlyAvoiding jargonTaking accurate measurementsActive listening

10 Steps to Better Communication in Construction

1. Avoid JargonJargon refers to industry-specific words or terms thatare difficult for those outside of that industry tounderstand. The  construction industry is no stranger tojargon, so reducing your use of industry-specific termscan greatly improve communication and keep everyoneon the same page.

For instance, a roofer may know exactly how to handle ahousetop that’s ponding, and a flooring professional canpickle a pine finish without breaking a sweat. But to anelectrician, drywall installer, or plumber, “ponding” and“pickling” may as well be a different language.

It’s simple enough to say “water collecting on the roof”instead of “ponding” or “whitewashed floors” instead of“pickled floors.” It might take some getting used to, butthe effort will be worth it when your whole team spendsless time deciphering and more time working.

2. Encourage General Communication SkillsMost office-type careers require professionals to have“soft” or interpersonal skills, meaning most companies inthese industries host a form of regular communicationstraining in their workplace. Though this is less common inindustries like construction, implementing structuredcommunication training can be a smart move forconstruction managers looking to help their crewsdevelop those skills.

Some of the most important  communication skills inconstruction include:

The latest  construction industry statistics  show abooming and sustainable sector. Yet, rising constructioncosts and labor challenges in addition to new regulationsare reducing the margin for error and waste.

For an industry that remains slower to innovation andadopting trends, the same construction trends persistyear after year with slightly different nuances. Newtechnology is continuing to change the construction site, improve the ability to win projects, and increase profitmargins. Trends and movements are changing the rolesof industry professionals and frontline workers.

As the industry becomes more competitive and themarket shifts, harnessing these construction industrytrends will prove valuable for any construction firm.Read on for the must-watch construction trends of 2020to help you can stay competitive and gain an edge in theindustry.

1. Efficiency-Improving Technology

The biggest differentiator for builders and developersthis year is likely to be technology in construction —specifically, the innovations that can enhance efficiency.

Smart Contracts

Forbes Council member Amir Baluch MD points out thecoming impact of blockchain technology on construction.Experts see it as being a powerful component inproviding a more secure and fast-moving workflow thatgives all parties involved more confidence andproductivity.

Smart contracts offer all organizations in a project ashared system to do business, allowing them to buy, track, and pay for services. Rather than getting contractsand tracking deliverables from all separate parties, firmscan use smart contacts as an all-in-one tracking systemwhere rules and deadlines are set and the blockchainenforces them. This system will carry make for fastercloseouts, increased security, better project tracking, and an automated supply chain.

Drones in Construction

Drone use in the construction industry  continues to beone of the fastest growing trends, with usage rising by239 percent year over year. The technology offers farmore uses than just aerial photography for real estateand commercial efforts.

Today’s drones are used for rapidly mapping large areasover long distances, producing valuable aerial heat mapsand thermal images. The advancing drone softwareprovides real-time, actionable, data that can be used forrapid decision making, streamlining the entireconstruction process.

Personal safety and equipment loss continues to be thebiggest areas of liability in construction. Drones can beincreasingly used to reach heights and do jobs in place ofhuman workers to prevent injury. Between $300 millionand $1 billion  in construction equipment is stolen eachyear. As on-site security tools, drones can be leveragedto reduce labor costs and minimize the risk of theft. Thatkeeps projects on schedule and moving faster too.

More advanced future uses include monitoringequipment use and incorporating AI to organizemoving construction equipment.

Elephants, ramps, pulleys, and lots of manual labor. Longbefore the arrival of modern engineering, ancient structureswere brought to life in impressive and mysterious ways. While it’s hard to imagine constructing buildings todaywithout modern machinery, human beings challengedphysical limitations to create some of the world’s mostenduring, visionary wonders.

Since those ancient times, construction has changedsignificantly – from the way we transport materials to howwe assemble them. These advances make us wonder howmuch it would cost to recreate famous ancient structures inthe modern age.

To find out, we looked at the materials, dimensions, andbuilding processes used and estimated the cost of nine iconicwonders.

Stonehenge is said to originally contain around 160massive megaliths—80 sarsen stones and 80 bluestones. To estimate the material costs, we multiplied the costsper ton of both  sarsen stone  and  bluestone  with theestimated weights of the stones used in the originalstructure. A  Stonehenge replica  in Australiarequired  140-ton cranes  and labor to construct over atwo year period. A similar plan for our Stonehenge wouldcost an additional $2,300,000.

While there are no remnants of the ancient Hanging Gardens ofBabylon that exist, Greek historian Diodorus once stated thatthe Garden was 100 long by 100 feet wide. In our research, theGarden is often depicted with five stories, which would make itsoverall floor plan approximately 50,000 square feet. A largermodern-day equivalent, the  Parkroyal Hotel  in Singapore, costabout $430 per square feet to build, putting our total cost tobuild today at $31.5 million.

The Parthenon was constructed withapproximately  100,000 tons  of cut marble. With theaverage per ton cost of  marble  valued at $304 fromthe  U.S. Geological Survey, we estimate the totalmaterials to be around $30 million in costs. In additionto a marble structure, the Parthenon is known for its34-foot high Doric columns—which we calculated byscaling up the costs of smaller columns—along with 50impressive marble figures sculpted into the frieze.

To set a base for Angkor Wat, we factored in the planned costfor  Viraat Ramayan Mandir, a future Hindu temple estimated tocost $78 million to construct. Given that it is half of the size ofIndia’s temple, a modern-day Angkor Wat would cost aboutaround $39 million to build. A shelved  replica in India  alsoprojected construction costs to be split between the building andprominent sculptures, which we used to estimate our costbreakdowns.

Machu Picchu spans an impressive 125.8 square miles, with an estimated  built area  of about 530 meters longby 200 meters wide with 172 campuses. Convertingthose numbers into 1,140,917 square feet, wemultiplied that floor size with the average costof granite per square feet of $50 to get our $57 millionmaterial costs.

Using reported  dimensions, we calculated the TajMahal’s main mausoleum building to encompass around237,000 square feet. We then multiplied the size withthe average marble and brick costs per square foot. Wealso calculated the size of the structure’s gardens usingdesigner  landscaping costs, as well as factored in thecost of the smaller replica in Bangladesh to arrive at ourtotal cost to build.

A similar structure to the Roman Colosseum isits counterpart in Las Vegas, with construction costs of$142 million in today’s dollars. Using the ellipticalstructure’s 197,000 square feet size as a base, wecalculated the cost to a similar structure at $824 persquare feet. A 261,36- square feet Colosseumrecreation, then, would require around $215 million instructural costs. The Colosseum also required about  1million tons  of  travertine, which would add anadditional $198,000,000 to the plan. An estimatefrom  HomeAdvisor  puts labor costs at around $22million.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is said to havebeen constructed with 2,300,000 blocks. Wemultiplied the  cost per ton of limestone  bythe average weight of the Giza blocks (about2.5 tons) to get our material costs of $1.14billion. With labor estimates ofapproximately $102 millionfrom HomeAdvisor, we estimate the costs tobuild the Great Pyramid today to be awhopping $1.2 billion.

A scaled replica of the Great Wall currently lies in Nanchang, China. With estimated construction costs of around $600,000 for2.5 miles of wall, we can assume that it requires about $303,000 per mile to construct a full-scale wall. Since the Great Wall isover 13,170 miles, we multiplied the amounts to arrive at $21 billion in construction costs. Labor costs in China are roughly halfthe total amount—a construction estimation of $21 billion means labor costs would also be approximately $21 billion, making thetotal cost to build $42 billion.

In science fiction, there’s usually a gadget to satisfy anyneed, from food to an entire house. If only things werereally that easy.

Building things for space is a uniquely complicatedchallenge. All of the tools and supplies required need tobe small enough to fit on a rocket and strong enough thatthey won’t break. Likewise, the heavy machinery wewould typically use for construction projects, like  carrydeck cranes  and  scissor lifts, aren’t outfitted to workanywhere other than Earth.

However, advancements in technology and constructionmethods are making it possible to accomplish more spacedevelopment than ever before. At the rate we’readvancing, it’s quite possible that the  future of theconstruction industry will be largely in space.

Let’s take a look at the specifics of space constructionand what it entails, or jump to the infographic below.

What is Space Construction?

Space construction is the idea of building in outer spaceinstead of building them on Earth. It can also refer to in-space manufacturing  or  off-Earth manufacturing  which, which is the design of objects in space.

Constructing items in space can be necessary for anumber of reasons. When the structure in question is toobig to be transported via spacecraft, or whencomponents are too fragile to survive a launch, spaceconstruction can be a logical solution.

While space construction has its advantages, it alsocomes with a whole host of unique complications as well.Standard design techniques and rules of architecture nolonger apply without gravity in the picture. And thoughspace construction eliminates the challenge of carryingstructures via spacecraft, the supplies and machinerynecessary for a build still need to be transported fromEarth.

Although obstacles to space construction still abound, engineers and scientists have already learned plentyabout the best ways to build in space.

How to Build in Space

Building in outer space is a lot different than building onEarth. For one, the absence of gravity makes the normalconventions of physics and design that govern Earth’sconstruction completely obsolete. However, justbecause the architectural design may be  expanded inspace, that doesn’t mean building in space doesn’t comewith its own problems.

One building challenge unique to outer space is makingsomething that can withstand the extreme environmentsof space. One such issue is the need for material that canwithstand the bombardment of radiation. Other issues, like being strong enough to exit the Earth’s atmosphere, but light enough so that it doesn’t hinder takeoff mustalso be addressed.

Although it seems like these materials are just theprospect of wishful thinking, new building materials mayhave solved those problems. These new materials areeconomically sound, able to resist radiation, can berecycled and are longer lasting. Specialized tools havealso been made to deal with the effects of microgravityand move large structures around.

Seven other types of investment in single- or multifamily construction, repair andmaintenance, or architectural and engineering services. Any dollar amountAny starting yearAny duration for the investment

AGC would like to share an exciting tool to demonstrate the economic impact of infrastructureinvestment in New Mexico - ‘AGC Construction Impact Model’.

AGC of America partnered with Brian R. Lewandowski, University of Colorado Boulder toproduce a flexible but simple economic model that calculates the impact on employment andoutput in each state from various sizes of investment in different types of construction.

The below link provides an explanation and instructions for using the model.

The table below shows an example of the results obtainable from the model, in this case, thetotal instate jobs (construction, supplier and induced jobs throughout the state's economy) andtotal instate output from a $1 billion investment over one year in three types of construction:highways, nonresidential buildings, or other nonresidential structures (infrastructure).

Users can choose from:

In addition to total instate jobs and output, the model shows separately the impact onconstruction, supplier and induced jobs, output, and value added (or state gross domesticproduct, the amount of labor income and profits added by the investment), and the 10 sectorsthat receive the most additional spending.

To access AGC’s ConstructionImpact Tool click here.

Stagnancy in home building has not kept up with demand and population growth. This has contributed to a growinghousing crisis. Traditional home building methods are inefficient and wasteful. These critical problems have driven costsup past the point of affordability for the average person. High costs also mean providing adequate shelter in developingcountries can be nearly impossible.

HOMEBUILDING HASN'TCHANGED SINCE THEMIDDLE AGES.

WE BUILT THE FIRSTPERMITTED 3D PRINTEDHOME IN AMERICA.In 2018, ICON was the first company in America tosecure a building permit for and build a 3D printedhome. The house in Austin, TX was a proof ofconcept that brought our team, investors, andcustomers together to drive towards the future.

We’ve used that support to develop robotics, software, and materials as our core  technology  forour partners and home buyers. The strength ofthese products has been proven further through anumber of projects since that first house, with moreto come soon.

NATIONALSTATISTICS GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT

VALUE ADDED BY THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY AS ASHARE OF GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT IN THE U.S.FROM 2007 TO 2019

STATISTICS

CONSTRUCTIONREPORTER

50

2020 Construction Reporter, LLC, All Rights Reserved. Reproduction & Forwarding is Prohibited.

In 2019, the value added of the construction industry contributed 4.1 percent the gross domestic product in the UnitedStates. Value added is based on the enhancement an industry gives its products or services before offering them totheir customers. It occurs when a product that could be considered homogeneous is given a feature that presents itwith greater value. The construction market in the United States is one of the largest in the world, with privatespending reaching 977 billion U.S. dollars in 2019 and with about 11.2 million people employed in the industry. It isexpected that new construction put in place will total 1,449 billion U.S. dollars by 2023.

Construction industry challengesTo maintain its competitive standing, the construction industry must overcome various barriers, including thosewithin the industry and external complications like the state of the U.S. economy. Currently, a shortage in skilledlabor has slowed the speed of on-site projects and making it even more difficult for encouraging new talent to begin. The construction industry is also notoriously sluggish in their integration of new advancements and technology, suchas project management software, drones, and building information modeling. NATIONALSTATISTICS FUTURE FORECAST

FORECAST FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION PUT IN PLACE INTHE U.S. FROM 2011 TO 2023 (IN BILLION U.S. DOLLARS)*

STATISTICS

CONSTRUCTIONREPORTER

51

2020 Construction Reporter, LLC, All Rights Reserved. Reproduction & Forwarding is Prohibited.

This statistic gives a forecast for total construction put in place in the United States between 2011 and 2023.Construction spending is projected to exceed 1.45 trillion U.S. dollars in 2023.

New construction put in place in the U.S.In 2018, new construction put in place in the United States was valued at around 1.29 trillion U.S. dollars, up fromaround 788 billion U.S. dollars in 2011, when construction spending reached the lowest level in a decade. Apparently, the industry is on track to continue its positive growth trend, and is expected to generate some 1.45 trillion U.S.dollars in revenue by 2023. The last time construction spending levels exceeded the one trillion U.S. dollar mark wasbetween 2004 and 2008, before the sub-prime mortgage crisis shocked the construction sector. Residential sectorconstruction spending will likely account for the lion’s share of the industry total: Residential construction put inplace is forecast to be valued at about 586 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, while non-residential construction spending isprojected to amount to around 590 billion U.S. dollars. The value of new non-building construction is predicted tocome to about 290 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. The positive trend is further underpinned by S&P/Case Shiller’sNational Home Price Index, which stood at 205 in February 2019. Publsihed by T. Wang

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to thisvirus. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

Between people who are in close contact with one another(within about 6 feet).Through respiratory droplets produced when an infectedperson coughs, sneezes or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of peoplewho are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Some recent studies have suggested that COVID-19 maybe spread by people who are not showing symptoms.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or afterblowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. It’s especially important to wash:

Before eating or preparing foodBefore touching your faceAfter using the restroomAfter leaving a public placeAfter blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezingAfter handling your cloth face coveringAfter changing a diaperAfter caring for someone sickAfter touching animals or pets

If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer thatcontains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands andrub them together until they feel dry.Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Inside your home: Avoid close contact with people who are sick.If possible, maintain 6 feet between the person who is sickand other household members.

Outside your home: Put 6 feet of distance between yourself andpeople who don’t live in your household.

Remember that some people without symptoms may beable to spread virus.Stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arms’ length) from otherpeople.Keeping distance from others is especially importantfor people who are at higher risk of getting very sick.

There’s often a delicate tension in northern New Mexicoover tourism. While the hospitality industry is adominant economic force in places such as Santa Fe andTaos, bringing in gobs of money, creating jobs andfunding local governments via taxes generated by visitorspending, locals decry its inarguable impact on historiclocal culture. Some are just generally annoyed by out-of-staters wandering around, looking like tourists andasking for directions or trying to figure out the localtraffic grid.

The latter attitude is off-base. Welcoming visitors isbasic human courtesy and, as we’ve said before, what weNew Mexicans hope for when we cross state lines for avacation, to see family or on a business trip.

We have a whole state department dedicated to gettingpeople to come to New Mexico. We can argue amongourselves about how much tourism is too much. And itcan be entertaining to recount humorous encounterswith confused visitors or just how outrageous some ofthem look in their new cowboy outfits. But don’t blamepeople if they heed that “New Mexico True” call andshow up here, looking for fun, relaxation or retail therapyin what we, after all, call the Land of Enchantment.

Now, the COVID-19 pandemic has added a new twist tohow we react to tourism in New Mexico.

In Taos, as detailed in a recent news story by the JournalNorth’s Kyle Land, there’s resentment that tourists fromCOVID hotbed states may be endangering the localpopulace.

As of earlier this month, many were clearly violating Gov.Michelle Lujan Grisham’s virtually impossible-to-enforceorder that they quarantine for 14 days before going outto enjoy New Mexico’s blue skies. Many also weren’twearing face masks, despite signs about mandated masksposted all over town.

On social media, locals say the visitors are putting thetown at risk. Residents and tourists reported that carswith out-of-state plates were getting keyed and peoplewere throwing rocks at visitors or yelling at them toleave. And the message “Go home” has been graffitied onwalls around town.

EDITORIAL: WELCOME TONEW MEXICO – OR NOT?By JOURNAL NORTH EDITORIAL BOARD8/23/2020

That all sounds pretty ugly. But it’s a fact that things aredifferent these days – there’s a pandemic. You shouldand, in fact, are required to wear a mask to help protecteveryone. Health officials urge us to restrict travel. Asofficial talking heads say over and over, the coronavirusdoesn’t care about state lines.

Taos merchants hit hard by the virus’ effects on the localand national economies, of course, welcome the summerrush of outside shoppers. But should Taoseños in generalbe happy that Texans or Arizonans fled their pandemicoutbreaks to come to the shelter of New Mexico’srelatively low COVID-19 infection rates?

It’s tough to say how locals in such tourist towns as Taosand Santa Fe should react. Shops and restaurants withoutside dining remain open and, despite gentle officialefforts to encourage out-of-staters to stay home andcome here at some other time, New Mexico hasn’t put upbarricades at its borders. So, we’re open business.

On the other hand, many of us are ourselves eschewingtravel and other activities as anti-virus protections, andwish others would do the same, for the common good.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New state data showsNew Mexico is meeting all of the gating criteria neededto move toward the next steps of reopening. However, top state officials don’t expect to take those stepsimmediately.

Presenting updated  COVID-19  information in a webconference Thursday, Human Services Secretary Dr.David Scrase said New Mexico has a spread rate of lessthan 1.05 and a seven-day rolling average of fewer than168 new cases per day. The state is also meeting allcriteria for testing capacity, contract tracing, andmetrics associated with statewide health care systemcapacity.

“Green bars, all around, all eight measures, you haveabsolutely no idea how gratifying this is to Dr. Smelserand I,” Dr. Scrase said. “You have no idea how gratefulwe are to the people of New Mexico because there’snot a single one of these measures that isn’t heavilyinfluenced by the behavior of folks in New Mexico.”

Despite that gating criteria victory, the state is stillweighing factors like schools restarting, an upcomingflu season and lessons learned from the state’s Junereopening that was followed with a case spike. Withthat, state health officials remain cautious about whatNew Mexico could reopen next. “There’s a lot ofactivity, a lot of planning, trying to understand what wecan do have a little bit more freedom without increasedrisk we experienced so profoundly last time,” Dr. Scrasesaid.

New Mexico’s current public health order expires onAugust 28. Thursday, Dr. Scrase said he doesn’t expectany changes to the current health order before then.

An estimated 330,000 school-aged children and teensare expected to return to New Mexico schoolssometime after Labor Day under hybrid learningmodels. A bi-weekly hybrid school plan would splitstudents time between distance learning and in-personteaching. On Wednesday, Aug. 19, the AlbuquerquePublic Schools school board voted to extend distancelearning through the end of the semester. This meansAPS students will not return to the classroom afterLabor Day.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – As New Mexico’s dailynumber of new coronavirus cases appears to continue adownward trend over the last few weeks, GovernorMichelle Lujan Grisham says she believes the stateseems on track to reopen schools next month. However, there are a few factors that could make or break astatewide reopening.

In an interview with KRQE News 13 Tuesday, thegovernor said she’s worried about a spike of new COVIDcases coming with Labor Day Weekend festivities andtravel that is normally associated with the holiday. Shealso says she’s worried about higher case numbers in thesouthern part of the state.

“I’m better than cautiously optimistic, but we have tohold these numbers,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham. “I can’thave a spike, and I can’t have some counties with theirinfection rate, right, southeastern New Mexico is still toohigh, they need to still come down in order for (schoolreopening) to be a statewide effort.”

Gov. Lujan Grisham is slated to deliver a primetimeaddress in front of the Democratic National ConventionWednesday. The speech will mark the third consecutiveNew Mexico governor to address a national partyconvention. The governor said Wednesday she hopes tohighlight how “proud” she is of the state’s COVIDresponse.

Data posted to the Department of Health’s coronaviruswebsite shows according to the state’s seven-day rollingaverage of new COVID-19 cases by day, as of August 13,New Mexico averaged an addition of 137 new COVIDcases per day. That number is below the state’s gatingcriteria of 167 new cases per day.

While that data point is a key metric, the governor saysNew Mexicans should not expect expanded reopeningcriteria next week, despite the state now meeting gatingcriteria now. “I need a couple more weeks, we all do, themore that you diminish the virus, the more that I canrespond to where people are moving between states, soin the southeastern part of the state, and southwesternNew Mexico, now we’ve got real opportunities to dealwith those outbreaks,” Gov. Lujan Grisham said.

USEFUL INFORMATION AND TIPS

5 Ways to Secure Against Construction Site TheftDAN TAYLOR - CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

Theft is a big problem for construction managers. It’s hard to secure a construction site—you can’t lock up all your valuable equipment and materials inside a structure that hasn’tbeen built yet.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau’s  2014 heavy equipment theft report  — the mostrecent one available — found that a total of 11,625 heavy equipment thefts were reported tolaw enforcement that year, an increase of 1.2% from the year before. Just 23% of theequipment was recovered, making it a very costly problem indeed for the constructionindustry.

So what can you, a construction manager, do to secure all that valuable equipment andprotect your bottom line? We’ve compiled a list of straightforward options that willimmediately work wonders in protecting your construction site.

1. Use good lighting

Nothing is more of a deterrent for a thief than trying to steal from a site that is lit up likeCarnegie Hall.

You can find lots of lighting options on sites such as Amazon, ranging from a few bucks toseveral hundred dollars, depending on your needs. If you have a small site to protect, youmay only need a few lamps that will probably cost you less than $100 total.

If you’ve got a bigger site, you may have to pony up for dual-head LED lights mounted ontripods that could run your bill into the thousands.

But compared to how much you could lose from theft, it’s probably worth it.

2. Put tracking devices in your equipment

Modern technology makes securing expensive equipment easier than ever before.

It’s simple to install tracking devices on a front-loader or a backhoe, and you could alsoattach them to a large pallet of lumber or other shipments of expensive materials. If anythief is unwise enough to make off with your stuff, you can provide their location to thepolice and get it back right away.

GPS Trackit, for example, offers cloud-based software that enables you to monitor all theequipment you’ve tracked. Another company called  CloudHawk  offers software that alsouses GPS location to track equipment in real time, in addition to optimizing maintenance bytracking usage hours.

These devices are helpful in other ways. Imagine a scenario where a worker misplacesequipment and is unable to find it, causing headaches for the site manager and even delays. With a tracking device, the problem is resolved quickly. You could also use them to monitorusage hours.

You should also engrave company identification numbers on your property so it can easilybe identified later and will serve as proof that it belongs to you.
