PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS During Education Week at Balranald Central School, we celebrated the achievements of our students and staff within the public education context. Thursday’s Open Day had new and existing families touring the school and engaging in various activities such as a Virtual Reality in Stage 3, Food Technology in Stage 4, Agriculture across the secondary curriculum and a Metals & Engineering display and workshop. My thanks to Mr Riedy, Mr White, Mrs Sendy, Mr Gaston and the Admin staff for their contributions during the day and in preparation. A “PPP”event (Pizza, Parents & Police) was held that evening with Mr & Mrs White along with Mrs Helgeland firing up the wood-fired oven and catering for the crowd of interested parents.
Senior Constables Alex Davies and Steve Dohnt held a parent session on “Think U Know” Cyber-Safety at home, which was very informative and well received by parents and community. This session was a warm up for the “Get your Techno Power Back” community session, which will be held in Balranald in late October. Rachel Downie’s approach is a mixture of values, research and experience in order to identify potential addiction, set boundaries and explore ways that families can find cyber wellness. This session in Term 4 is not to be missed! Grandfriends day was held on Friday morning with open primary classrooms during first period followed by a student concert and morning tea for attending families. My thanks to Mr Riedy and our dedicated Primary staff for their preparation for the day and my gratitude to the P&C for their great catering and the many parents who donated a plate to share. A reminder that the ICAS academic competitions have gone online this year. Parents wishing to nominate their children for any of these competitions are to type unsw.global/parentpay into their browser and enter the access code 58ef40bf77. The deadline for payments is this Wednesday 14th August. “The BCS Plank Challenge” is on this week at lunchtime under the Hangar. Participants from both primary and secondary will need to plank on their toes and forearms for as long as they can in order to earn house points. The challenge has also been issued to the community to see if anyone can topple Richard “six pack” White, Will “eight pack” Godber or Gus ”the keg” Comi in this event. The Local v Schoolies trophy goes on the line once again! We welcome visitors to our school and especially like it when parents, carers, grandparents etc. come to visit. However, it is vital that all visitors report to the Admin office prior to entering classrooms or engaging with students in the playground. This is a safety measure for not only our students but also for the visitors as well. The BCS beanies have arrived and not only look great, but also provide excellent warmth for all our students. Parents are reminded that these beanies have been adopted as school uniform, which means that other headwear apart from BCS bucket hats for Primary and BCS caps for Secondary are permitted. These items are available for sale from the Admin office or the uniform shop at a very reasonable cost of $20.

Year 5/6 Year 5 and 6 are doing an art project based on the kids picture book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?" Students are painting a full silhouette of themselves doing an action. The silhouettes will then be decorated using coloured circles that move from warm colours at the feet to cool colours at the head. The silhouettes will be displayed with text where each person refers to the next. For example: 'Liam, Liam, What do you see? I see Kayla drawing next to me' Kayla, Kayla, What do you see? I see Darryl dabbing next to me.' We are planning to create a display for somewhere in the school that will create a visually appealing space and provide additional reading practice for younger students. It is also helping my students to identify verbs and to use correct punctuation in their writing.

On Wednesday the 14th of August, Balranald Central School will be participating in the Rural and Remote Paper Plane State Championship. Students from across the school will compete in an attempt to make their paper aeroplane fly the furthest distance and/or remain in the air for the longest time. Students will receive one A4 piece of paper that they will FOLD into their chosen design for the competition. Students will not be allowed to cut, tear or add weight to their planes. Students will have to be extremely careful with their paper, as they will not be issued with a new piece under any circumstances. The competition will begin at 9.30am at the Balranald Football Sheds. Anyone wanting to come along on the day and have a look at the student’s achievements is more than welcome to attend. The table below outlines the qualifying distances and/or times students must meet if they are to move onto the following round in Sydney.
